    Good project. Have experience with these in turbo marine form. They are very responsive to timing. Run a few degrees extra advance. Make yourself a high pressure hose with injector coupling nuts. These engines can crack the injector lines. Once one cracks you go nowhere. Put the hose on and it'll drive home on 7 cylinders. The hose will flex and you won't get injection on that cylinder, but you will get home.
    High idle is how you set governed RPM. Raise it a few 100 rpm and then figure your boost. Anything above about 25 psi boost and the head gaskets will weep. The 300+ HP marine engines use oil cooled pistons. Since you don't have oil cooled pistons, instead of lots of fuel and high piston temps at lower speeds, wind it a bit more and get the HP with RPM. These engines are tough. The lower end will take the RPM 😊

    Take my advice as someone who has a eaton 10 speed in a truck, take the top cover off and put a new seal kit in range piston. Mine will leak air sometimes bad when it gets any cold temps and eventually will fail so much easier to do outside than in the truck. The seal kit is very cheap on the bad end you may need to replace the top cover if it has pitted the cover. This is assuming your eaton is the same as mine or similar. You can also buy a clutch housing that is made for a hudraulic slave cylinder and makes doing the linkages etc much easier because you can have a hydraulic shop make you a hose to run from your slave cyl and the master cyl.

      @@STROKER-GARAGE if you do go the hydraulic route and don't use the original mechanical linkage be sure and buy a heavy duty clutch master because these semi clutch kits are quite stout and I highly doubt the OEM Ford can handle them.

    At your transmission output shaft just make a flat flange so you can bolt your SD drive shaft to. Look into SD Cummins swaps you can use an aftermarket hydraulic pump for your power steering (I have one on mine and it works awesome) Go with a 03-07 truck I feel the front axle setup is a little better vs the 7.3s. I'll be following this build ... good luck

      That’s what I’ve been thinking about the output too. Then I can always ad a divorced T-case if I want one. I’m going to mount the engine then decide accesories and placement by what clearance I have. I plan to build it with Air ride suspension too.

  • @FordGTmaniac

    For the twin turbos, try looking into using dual volute turbos rather than normal ones. They give better throttle response and can make more power than an equivalent normal turbo of the same size, for the cost of a slightly more complex exhaust setup. I'm not too sure if anyone makes them big enough for an engine like this, though, a pair of custom one-off dual volute turbos sounds really cool but probably expensive.

      @@STROKER-GARAGE, install stronger axles ASAP. 2.5 ton Rockwells with modern internals and 8 lug disk brake conversion would be good. Also, you can get a sleeve kit for the 3208, ignore the "disposable" nonsense, they can indeed be resleeved. Also, if you put the money into it, these engines can make great power numbers.

    Im in the process of putting an eaton behind a cummins. My solution for the transfer case was to find a 205 from a ford, center mount it in the truck, make up 2 equal length output shafts for sake of possibly blowing them up and needing a spare. And since its a divorced case, just make an input shaft that converts to the output of the eaton.

    A tow monster 2wd f550 would be sick. With that motor the truck won’t be useful for much else. 2wd would take weight off the nose, allow for more space, and make it easy to run air suspension which would be cool and help a ton with the engine weight

    For the clutch release, F650/750 trucks with eaton synchro shifts have the hydraulic linkage pushing a mechanical release lever. You would just need to adapt the bracket a bit to fit the RT transmission.

    The easy way to do your driveshaft is get a shaft yoke and machine it down to the diameter of your driveshaft, might even be able to use a slip yoke that fits that series of u-joint if the od of the yoke is close to the tube id.
    I remember back in the 80's when the diesels were just coming out in pickups seeing a magazine article featuring a Chev one ton dually where someone replaced the 6.2 with a 3208. can't remember what transmission they ran though. You can definately make some horses with them as I've seen a few guys running them in pulling tractors running twin turbos.

    I like the idea but it's going to eliminate a lot of things you might eventually decide you want. I was thinking of an F550 with a larger engine bay, different frame and suspension that can survive the torque without becoming a pretzel. You could tow much more than an F350 chassis would allow, too. I'll be watching your progress!

    13:20 I put one of those 3208's in a car, used a parking brake cable and made a bolt in clutch bracket out of rebar for it. just make sure their is two points of linkage adjustment... the W300 dodge couldn't lift the 3000lb all of it to get in the old dent side F100 but it rolls as is, creating a base line.

    You can make a new driveshaft with the original yoke from your truck driveshaft and after the carrier bearing. Convert the input to a truck style input yoke or a converted rear driveshaft section. You have a great idea and you might wanna just use a 2 ton rear axle so you don't strip out the rear axle, and you can put a driveshaft in much easier.

    I would go with a divorced t case. An np205 would hold up fine. I've seen them hold up to done serious abuse. I have a Ford box truck that has the 3208 turbo in it. I can email pics if you need any info. The divorced case means more shafts but it'll be a much easier 4x4 conversion. Glad to help any way I can! There may be a bigger more suitable t case that's just what comes to mind. I know those 4x4 line trucks have big cases in them but you'll be running out of space pretty quickly.

    clutch capacity is a function of disc area, coefficient of friction, and PRESSURE. So if you a blowing through your clutches you can go with a pressure plate with more clamp force. I run 3000+ clamp force ram pressure plates with cheap clutch discs to save on cost. You will need a healthy leg though.

    Twin turbos seem a little overkill. A single turbo would probably be more ideal for towing and reliability less things to go wrong. And a truck you might be able to get one with a blow motor and transmission. The body style I would chose a super duty. A 2011 would be nice with the newer features probably harder tho. Aside from that this is sounding like an awesome build. The ultimate truck.

    3208 was a “ throwaway engine “. The natural aspirated engines were gutless !!
    Those engines and the Detroit 8.2 L were turds.
    I worked on mixer & dump trucks back in the day that had 3208’s.
    I’ve seen a couple of Detroit 4-53 swaps that were pretty cool.

    • @STROKER-GARAGE
      @STROKER-GARAGE  2 місяці тому +2

      “Throwaway” just like the engine that’s already in most pickup trucks…? The idea is an oversized engine never has to work too hard and will last longer.

    • @redmesa2975
      @redmesa2975 2 місяці тому

      @ throw away as in it doesn’t have cylinder liners. So it can’t be in framed.
      If you have to pull the engine to rebuild it, then may as well throw it away. Then install a new one. That’s where the term came from.

    • @STROKER-GARAGE
      @STROKER-GARAGE  2 місяці тому +3

  • @jn1ty
    @jn1ty 2 місяці тому

    I would look around for a larger truck like a F600 and convert it down with smaller tires to make it more pickup like. If you wanted to use your 3208 and 10 speed it would be a lot simpler. Maybe use a RT 610 trans. They are a little smaller and it would be easier to install.

      Glad you enjoyed it, and thank you for your response! It’s definitely going to be an incredible setup. Here in Europe, such big trucks are a rarity-let alone a setup like the one you have in mind 😂. I’m honestly jealous of the freedom to create something like that.
      On a related note, I recently saw a post about a guy in Italy who installed an agricultural Iveco Vector V12 engine with four turbochargers, pushing 1,500 hp, into an old Iveco semi-truck chassis. Unfortunately, he got busted on the motorway, fined €4,300, had his license suspended, and the truck confiscated 🫡. No appreciation for such a masterpiece 🥲.
