Moving Your Feet For Drummers 101!

  • A classic bit of basics today, but something often overlooked by drummers in my experience. This is a classic Grade 1 foot and hand pattern that seems so simple, but if internalised can be the foundation for SO much great stuff on the drums. Drilling this one simple pattern until it's automatic can prevent so much of the “struggling" reported by drummers on more complicated patterns further down the road.

    Love the basics! Not enough people cover them. Seems to be all about chops chops chops lol

      This is one of those videos that will definitely get lower views than many others, but IMO contains a bit of basic coordination skill so central and important to developing so much great stuff on the drums. One of THE core things to get your head around on the drums in my opinion.

      It’s actually a great exercise to work on tempo when transitioning from eighth to sixteenth to sixteenth note triplets to 32nd notes and back down while maintaining the feet going. Just counting the “1 +” in your head helps as you mention once you line up your hands (with the 16th note triplet your “and” would end up with your left hand) Thanks Mike!

      @@stujos82 Excellent Stuart, yes did something similar using singles, doubles and paradiddles a while back: ua-cam.com/video/aLXMeHlKZCE/v-deo.html
      Would make a good new practice-along video too, will do that soon! Cheers.

    Another awesome demo from Mike. What I find (older learner - 57) is that the mechanics are fine. I can achieve this accurately with a decent speed. What I find hard is adding the accents and moving around like you demonstrate. So the advice about the accents really hit the nail on the head for me. Marks you out as an excellent tutor, you always seem to be right in my head!!!

      Cheers Graham - I'd recommend starting with this and spending plenty of time on it, playing it along to music etc. Then moving it around the drums without accents for a while. When you go to start adding in accents, just drill one at a time at first, like this - ua-cam.com/video/6_nnG9bs6xI/v-deo.html
      And, I have to say it, following a level-by-level course designed to build up your skills over time, like Trinity's Grade courses would always be my recommendation too.
      Cheers!

      @@MikeBarnesDrums Thanks Mike. Advice taken! Will subscribe to the buy-me-a-coffee too. I need all the help I can get! I absolutely respect the nature of practice/practice/practice and typically I put in a minimum of an hour and often two every day (probably that’s not enough but busy lives). I’m pretty coordinated (required for job) and have reasonable independence. But I’m old, and I feel that if I’m to be any good at this thing time in running out! So anything that helps me to move forward is properly appreciated and respected …

    Yeah, like this one, Mike. It might be even doable, lol!
    I don't have much co-ordination, so this type of drill is going to be helpful. I suppose 4/4 music suits the purpose best?

    • @MikeBarnesDrums
      @MikeBarnesDrums  Рік тому

      Cheers Paul! You should be familiar with this exercise - it's on page 1 of Grade 1 Trinity! Yes 4/4 music for playing along in the first case.

    Great lesson. It looks so simple and then is tricked than it looks. It’s not in rock school grade 1. So an example where trinity grade has an extra part in it.

    • @MikeBarnesDrums
      @MikeBarnesDrums  Рік тому +1

      Cheers Tony! Yes Trinity College London Drum Kit, Grade 1, page 1! - In that case it's quarter notes with the feet and eighths with the hands, but same principle. It's actually in the "initial" grade level too. Doesn't feature in the same way in Rockschool or Trinity Rock and Pop, and in my experience drummers who've only done those courses then sometimes find it very tricky when the feet get more involved, especially the hi-hat foot, later on. Have always loved the TCL course, the best possible foundation in drumming skills IMO.
