I think my favorite part is when Strange reveals to Mordo that the Ancient One draws power from the dark dimension. Powerful acting from all three actors
It's so ridiculously evocative of everything his character represents in the comics. Power doesn't come without a price, and he will find a way to pay it (or Double Irish it across dimensions so he can pay the next ones too). It's also so interesting because it's still an extreme expression of arrogance. To believe you can chain a god with your will and outlast him because you spent a couple years in physio, to have a natural understanding of time and people's experience of the world and natural laws to know that experience is something that would be an effective weapon against him, and then to distract his mind and wear him down by practicing his mystic arts to the extent he's one of the best when he comes out the other side. Like Captain America he was born for this - as a gifted soul who's arrogance, intellect, and talent have allowed him to solve every problem in front of him, he must learn to use those talents to confront forces far beyond human reckoning. Cap has the experience to give morality to his strength, Strange has the arrogance and intellect to give ambition to his talent, it must be suborned by a will to serve others and wisdom of endless painful experience. The ability to break the rules in only just the right ways is a perfect core personality trait for the best wizard too.
One of my favorite tiny details of this movie is you can see the date of Stephen’s accident on his watch. It’s February 2nd, Groundhog Day, a reference to a time loop, which is how he eventually saves the world from Dormammu.
This is honestly one of my favorite endings of an MCU movie. The hero doesn't beat the villain in a fist fight or in some overwhelming display of strength. Dr. Strange wins with intelligence and the selfless act of trapping himself in an endless loop of death if it means preventing Dormammu from taking over the universe.
“You cannot win..” “No, but I can lose. Again, again, and again… and that makes you my prisoner.” Yes that line is huge! Steven had never lost and now he was willing to lose his life over and over forever just to save billions of people....his sacrifice is one of the highlights of his character and I think people really don't touch on a lot as shows how far he grew since being so self serving to becoming selfless and being a true doctor and hero. I loved Benedict in this role..he took it seriously and his blew this out of the park. Thank you Benedict.
28:04 Her reaction in the broom closet was genuine, since the mop handle fell completely by accident, and scared Rachel McAdams almost out of her skin. Scott Derrickson, the director, decided to keep the reaction in the film, since she never broke character.
I love that scene with Tilda Swinton as she died. Excellent dialogue. Ancient One: "You have such a capacity for goodness. You've always excelled, not because you crave success but rather your fear of failure." Strange: "It's what made me a great doctor." Ancient One: "It is precisely what has kept you from greatness. Arrogance and fear still keep you from learning the most simplest and significant lesson of all." Strange: "Which is?" Ancient One: "It's not about you."
@@Rhodair She delivered it very well. Part of me still thinks that the Ancient One role should have gone to an asian person. It just makes more sense, but that might have led to someone without the necessary acting skills.
Benedict Cumberbatch was amazing in this. And the music at the end when he goes up those stairs to the end credits was beautiful; feels like it symbolized his journey to hero.
Inception, as stated per Christopher Nolan ( so many ppl said Dr. Strange stole from Inception, which was false) he read those Dr. Strange comics and took these concepts from a comic book
lol it's like when people get it flipped who made the original song, or for example, I've heard people think Captain America's a more recent thing when he's from the 1940s
“we never lose our demons, Mordo. we only learn to live above them.” one of the best quotes in MCU, and Tilda Swinton killed it as Ancient One (even though everyone rioted when she was first cast)
Maple, you have officially entered the mind of M.C. Esher and his Tesselation artwork. He's KNown for physics bending and breaking ideas such as The Penrose Step Monks and the endless waterfall. (ala INception) Along with interlocking, machine-like, and organic structures in repeated looping patterns. To Esher, 'Order is a repetition of symmetrical units and Chaos is a multiplicity without rhythm.'
This is my favorite solo MCU movie as well, and yes, Cumberbatch was perfectly cast, but he's far from my favorite MCU hero. He's like a mystical more serious version of Tony Stark, incredibly intelligent, incredibly skilled, incredibly arrogant, with a smart mouth added to it, and a tendency to think the rules are for everyone else.
One of my favorite Marvel characters when I was a kid in the 70s, because so much about him is so surreal, even though he lives in the real(ish) world of normal people and superheroes. Such a well done movie giving nods to the Ditko art as well as the sorcerer mythos. And such a great reaction from you, though I admit that I was hoping you'd cry partly just because you told us that you'd had your lashes done. 😲 I'm kind of a jackwagon at times. 😛
I cringed away from the accident *just like that* when I first watched it. It's such a visceral moment. They did a good job of making the audience actually feel it.
When the speculation began about which characters the MCU was going to explore beyond the core team of Avengers, the two I most wanted to see were Black Panther and Dr. Strange. Thankfully, they gave us both of them and in each case did a great job. This is one of the only movies where I thought 3D actually improved the experience. Seeing this on the big screen in 3D was like watching Inception designed by MC Escher as viewed through a kaleidoscope and I loved every second of it :)
Benedict Cumberbatch's acting in Doc strange is what made me fall with the character. I absolutely adore his other projects also but he absolutely killed it in Marvel movies. Loved the reaction btw . Dr strange by far the best Avenger for me other than OG Iron man or capt America
Great to see you enjoying Dr Strange's entry into the MCU. He's always been one of my favourite Marvel characters. This was a class reaction, well done Maple 👍👍👍😊
All these years and all her roles later, and I still cannot shake seeing Tilda Swinton as Jadis the White Witch, Snow Queen of Narnia. If only they'd had her offer Strange some Turkish delight with that first cup of tea, that would have been hilarious (and a nod to the later revelation about her breaking a few rules to draw energy from the dark dimension, given what this 'sweetie' represented -- temptation).
Omg when strange came back through the portal from the snowy mountain and you just smiled and said “Hey 😀” that was so cute 😂😊 love all your reactions! So much fun to see someone watch all the mcu movies in order for the first time 😄
Hey Maple, the ideas and concepts for the movie come from the comic book artwork and The influence of artist Steve Ditko. As well as VFX in "INception, which gave them the spark to say VFX has come far enough to have M.C. Esher's ideas capitalized on. Ditko’s spacey, brain-blasted approach to otherworldly art is part of the film’s visual DNA. So thank you Steve Ditko for taking our minds to infinity and beyond.
As others have said, Tilda Swinton was absolutely gold in her role as the Ancient One. It's a shame that some saw it as a slight that she was cast in the role and also a shame that she was made to feel as if she had to apologize. Great actors are just that. And she definitely is a great actor.
When the mop falls in the scene after Christine aka the Night Nurse saves Dr Strange and the mop falls. Her reaction is genuine becasue the mop fall wasn't supposed to happen. It was a serendipitous moment that the director left in the film.
Lots of parallels between Strange and Tony Stark. Both geniuses, nearly destroyed by their own arrogance. Learning humility, and finding an unexpected path to adapt to their new reality.
Rich, arrogant, self-centered genius hits rock bottom, endures trials and tribulations, humbles himself and becomes a hero. TOTALLY different from Tony Stark, right?
For those who watch Dr Strange 2 , at 10:37 , the meaning of what she said make sense now. Yes need to see all the marvel even the tv show because Dr Strange 2 have some link with some.
When you're watching different characters especially Dr Strange there individuals with there own space to be heroes, in there own way. Part of group as well as One.
I wonder how many people picked up on the fact that the colonel that needed spinal surgery that Strange was looking at in the car when he had his terrible car accident was actually James Rhodes aka: War Machine from Civil War when he was ....well no more spoilers ...just curious as to how many noticed that.

No, upside down cities are not intentional nods to Inception because stuff like that was done in other media including comics long before the Inception. So Nolan wasn't that original, maybe only in mainstream movies. Most famous example are Escher paintings, they inspired many people, that includes cities upside down, later when computers became powerful, there appeared many fractal patterns including deconstructed buildings
Best joke in this is so meta. Strange - "people used to find me funny..." Wong - "did they work for you ?" Then at the final act Strange makes a joke and Wong cracks up. Why ? Because now Wong works for Strange.
Am I alone in thinking Wong was looking to Mordo a tin bit too intense as Mordo was saying he will follow this path no more? I thought he looked too intense but funny.
Love this girl. Her facial expressions are fantastic when she's surprised about a scene. It's even funnier when she actively tries to censor what she really wants to say because..... ummm.... UA-cam is just fucking stupid! Makes my to see these reactions!
This is when the Marvel Universe goes cosmic starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Stephen Strange as a neurosurgeon who gets into a massive car accident thus making his hands useless. Traveling to Kamantaj he is met by the Sorceress Supreme played by Tilda Swinton who teaches him about the mystic arts
The kaleidoscopic effect is a nod to the art of the late Steve Ditko, the incredible comic book artist who created Dr. Strange. It has nothing to do with "Inception".
