Something that is easy to miss in the credits is that Cumberbatch pulled double duty in this film: he also provides the voice for Dormamu. Also, I can never see Mordo without thinking of the actor's role as the bounty hunter in "Serenity."

And a new dimension, mind the pun, of the MCU is revealed magic and mysticism. Strange in a lot of ways is just like Tony a wealthy successful man with a sharp tongue and an ego the size of a continent. Until a tragic accident ruined him forced him to become humble and be more than he thought he was. Except while Tony is a man of technology Stephen found his purpose in ancient primordial energies. What I really love about this movie is how Strange defeated the main villain not with strength or smarts but by annoying the hell out of Dormammu until he gave into his demands which is admirable all the times Stephen had to die and suffer for the world until Dormammu surrendered.

I'm sorry you had to cancel your trip to Nepal because of the pandemic. My brother and his wife were halfway through their trip in March of 2020 when everything started suddenly shutting down. They had to quickly make their way back to Kathmandu and wait in an empty hotel (all the help lived across the border and had gone home) for a week while the American Consulate arranged for a flight to bring them back to the US. It wasn't their first trip to Nepal, but it was quite an adventure on its own. As for Doctor Strange, it was one of my favorite comics when that same brother allowed me to read through his Marvel collection in the 1970s, and I was extremely pleased with how the movie turned out. All the character/place/item names that are difficult to remember are from the comics and, in many cases they pre-date the names with which they are so easily confused. I am so glad you enjoyed this movie. As I said, it is one of my favorites and people who watch it tend to love it or not care for it at all.

Of all the MCU movies, which I’ve thoroughly enjoyed since the start, this one, and Doctor Strange, resonate the most with me personally. 2 decades of constant pain, 12 years of major surgeries, 5 of them, after many screws, plates, titanium cages and donor bone I’m 80% pain free. It’s hard to describe what years worth of recovery is like to others, but let’s just say it can take a toll on you, for many it gets REALLY dark and the only way to deal with it is to lash out in anger. It’s not anger at anyone in particular, it’s just general and raw, but it feels like you’re the target if you’re on the other side. Strange isn’t acting that way to her in particular, she’s just the closest one to him, he’s angry, bitter and frustrated with what happened to him. What I love about this one is that the solution for him was more spiritual than surgical as is often the case. The mind can work magic if you just let it.

It's interesting, because, with the addition of Benedict Cumberbatch, there's now two Sherlock Holmeses in the MCU. And Benedict is with Robert Downey Jr.'s Irene Adler. And they are essentially the same archetype, being that Dr. Strange is a doctor/sorceror and Tony Stark is a bit of a mad scientist.
EDIT: They also both start off as arrogant jerks and become humbled by their experiences.

Marvel really listened to their fanbase when they cast him and then announced it at the 2016 Comic Con. There were a lot of people that didn't think magic could work in the MCU. It was really cool to see how that all worked out.

They don't say it in the movie, but Dr. Strange basically *power-leveled* himself against Dormamu, amirite? I mean, when you're playing a game with protection beyond your level in order to fight baddies way above your level... and you gain lots of experience from it... that's power leveling. He got to try a bunch of different spells against a resisting opponent (vs imagining one with McDojo katas in the mirror dimension), so he could really get a feel for whether he can survive certain attacks or not, and which kind of defenses work best against those attacks... while practicing his defenses under duress in rapid succession (the old "Think fast!" school yard flinch check).
So yeah, that's my head canon. He upped himself over and over, using his superior memory to maximize the extremely unique training opportunity.

Some surgeons do listen to music when they operate and there are some that don’t like to have music played. I know when my wife had her c-section they played some 80s music which is a big favorite of my wife and myself. It helped to keep us both relaxed. 8:43 I deal with chronic pain everyday and it’s hard to manage at times especially with stress added to the mix. I always have to remind myself to not take the frustration of the pain out on my family. Especially when we are having an argument about something small. Benedict Cumberbatch does a great job portraying Dr Strange. His portrayal mimics most of the animated versions I’ve seen. I love how Dr Strange deals with Doramomu. Mordo is a very dangerous man cause he’s the kind that only sees in black and white and doesn’t allow for any gray/color areas. The world isn’t black and white. You have to color outside the lines sometime within reason.

I also completely loved the fact they didn't have him defeat Dormammu through magical strength/force. He outmaneuvered him instead. The movie captures the style and look I feel in love with in the comic panels all those years ago. Story wise, this may not be the strongest MCU flick, but it's my favorite.

This is my favorite Marvel movie. I liked how it was different by embracing magic and mind bending visuals.
At the beginning of the movie, Stephen is self-centered, arrogant, unsympathetic, dismissive and emotionally dysfunctional. The only real value he places on himself is his ability to be an excellent surgeon. He measures everyone against (and therefore, below) his himself. He's borderline sociopathic at the beginning, but I think it has more to do with him being an extreme narcissists than being bad. He simply doesn't place value on other people unless they can do something for him. It's fun to watch him grow and change as the movie progresses.

Late to the reply, but I subscribe to the theory that the pilot in question was the guy in Hammer's suit in Iron Man 2. It would take some time for Strange to train in the montages and get caught up to the main timeline where Rhodes was just injured.

    [This is not a spoiler]…
I know you don’t like watching trailers before watching movies (which is bonkers to me 😁), but something in this movie reminded me of a special trailer leading up to Avengers Endgame. If you won’t watch it before Endgame then right after you should watch the “To The End” trailer to that movie. It is an awesome piece of art.

Great reaction! I did want to mention that I have been to Kathmandu, Nepal. Even though I was there volunteering as a nurse for a 4 weeks, however, I was really there do some soul searching. I didn't go to Everest or the base of it, but I met some wonderful people, some delicious food (try the falafel wraps), and a spiritual renewal. I also pushed my limits like bungee jumping, white water rafting, and karaoke lol. I definitely recommend visiting such a beautiful place, but of course, please be safe and take needed precautions. Looking forward to your reactions for the rest of the MCU. What were the sorcerers up to during the invasion of New York hmmm ;) lol

I do wish you had seen in 3D IMAX. It was breathtakingly mind blowing stunning. This is the reason why I own all of the Marvel films done in 3D. So the watch drawer is actually based on a real thing, an automatic winder. Automatic watches, work on motion throughout the day. An automatic winder constantly turns them to keep them wound. Sadly, the thing that makes it look cool is completely superfluous because the watches are facing straight up. To work, they would have to be on their sides.
