The 1999 and 2005 intros were my childhood. Never really followed the storylines, was not interested in the slightest in the franchise, but I remembered them and Christ do I feel nostalgic. I remember watching these with my parents, and bloody hell do I feel mopey af.
1972 bring tears to my eyes. So beautiful. Happy, warm, sad, and longing all at once -- genius how the composition mirrors the emotional rollercoaster of the soap. My favourite of all time. Makes me miss Nan. The writing is top notch.
@@DeltaJazzUK i too watched this serie with my parents , but they did not understand english so they only watched it cuz of the animals and tried to go along with episodes as good as they could.

The 1975 theme is what I remember from when I was a kid. I loved it then. Actually, I was too young to enjoy the actual program.. just wanted to listen to the theme..
This soap, was very popular in Sweden, and my nan and parents loved it. We get subtitles, in Sweden. Back then, we started learning English at 10 years old and I love this soap so much
It was a pretty good Year for Emmerdale. Probably best British soap that year, Enders was in the doldrums, Corrie went a bit silly and Hollyoaks was Taylor-Burton Heavy.
It's the 1975 theme that I first knew. Those beautiful pictures. That final beautiful sun setting behind the house at the end. That makes me feel so nostalgic, thinking about those carefree years when my family were all still alive
Brilliant theme tunes I love the classic Emmerdale Episodes that air on ITV3 but I wish that ITV would reshow old classic Emmerdale Episodes on ITV3 from 1972 till 1989 then continue to reshow old Classic Emmerdale episode's from 1990 all the way up to 2022 that would be brilliant. Thanks so much forever and ever ITV for reshowing old classic Emmerdale Episodes.
My favourite was always the sunset one of the early 80's. Still think the northern soaps emmerdale and corrie are 10 times better written than eastenders is nowadays. (Loved 'Enders in the 80's).

I love how it just gets phatter and phatter each time round. At the beginning it's like a sad clarinet giving birth to an even sadder clarinet and by the end it's a fuckin roof raiser. BIG UP 1999!
This is a perfect example of a gorgeous theme tune that should never have been messed with. Whatever producer thought they needed the horrid computerised travesty from 1993 was mad.
Not a regular Emmerdale viewer but I agree with you - from 1993 onwards the theme was awful. Sounded simple and tinny, and it lost the warm nostalgic sound of the original theme.
Some reason the 1972 opening is so familiar to me! Had a massive Deja Vu when I watched it and it was way before my time as I was born in 1993 and I don't even watch Emmerdale! It also gives me shivers and makes me feel funny.... maybe a past life possibly?
Ellie Bryan I was born in 1980 and watched it throughout the 80’s-90’s with my mum but I was familiar with the ‘72 opening too. Also I’ve never heard another person say this, and I’m so glad it’s not me but I get the weird shivers from this kind of stuff too. The Thames tv indent, and various openings from old shows. It baffles me and I’ve never understood why it happens. Very strange phenomenon!
My mother watched soap operas when I was inside her womb. I think I have heard the theme many times because even tho I haven't seen a single episode of Emmerdale I get this really relaxing and nostalgic feeling out of this theme. Amazing
Thank you! Now I can finally prove it to my mother that Emmerdale's theme was very different from the current one once upon a time. (Yet I remember only the 1999 and 2005 themes as the "originals", while my mother, who's watched the show sporadically since its inception, can't remember shite about the themes since before the current one.) P.S. Emmerdale is big in Sweden.
Over the hills Over there’s a bright side of life Over the hills You can jump, run and fly a kite Over the hills You and yours can watch the sun rise Open’s the gate Do make your haste Play and sing forever Over the hills There’s a peace beyond all the pale Darling, won’t you come and live in Yes, won’t you come live in Please, won’t you come live in Emmerdale?
The original theme tune they used which ran from 1972-93 was by far the best. It just flows better and is easier on the ear. When they changed it to a different arrangement in 1993 it went downhill. The 1975 pictures are the ones I first remember. I always used to look out for the little glimpse of the tractor.
I like the 70's and 80's version best and when the show was about farm life more and still had a rustic feel to it. And people spoke with more broad Accent. Lots of aye's and aye up's.
Artishealing65, as a Yorkshireman, from Barnsley, myself, you are right, my all-time favourite character, in Emmerdale was Seth Armstrong, and he had a broad Yorkshire, too. He was from Barnsley, too. He was played by the late Barnsley-born, and bred actor, Stan Richards. Emmerdale was about farming, in the 1980s, and in the 1990s, and 2000s, there are too many deaths, some were murdered, and some were accidental. I love watching the classic episodes, on ITV3.
I don't normally watch soaps, can't stand them. But I really love the 1993 and 1998 Emmerdale theme song. Because I think the melody and harmony of the piano fit nicely together and it's the only one I remember as a child.
The original theme will always be the best. The oboe is just simply beautiful and makes me emotional. This is when Emmerdale was a lot more wholesome and worth watching, unlike the current drivel and endless bed hopping etc
Oh man... I never really watched the show, but my grandma watched every episode, whenever a new one aired. I remember many times when I visited her, at 6pm she always dropped everything she was doing and sat down to watch it. Many times I sat there aswell not really understanding what the show was about, but I didn't need to. This beautiful theme will always remind me of her.
I loved the 1999 Version. I live in Canada and we don't get the Show anymore : - (. The "Extras" for this Opening Sequence were great and The Little Girl is all Grown up now. The US don't hold a Candle to The UK for Soaps now. Many Americans have discovered this Show, Coronation St., and EastEnders.
I've just started watching this show from the very beginning. Was lured to it by the haunting theme music and rolling English country side. I want to watch it from the 1972 start to its present day cast of characters. It will be interesting to see how this show developes and why its been so long running.

Jack and Marian never worked out long term even though he did temporarily move to Italy with her.
