One of the most impressive things about this track is the way it gives the impression of more than three voices playing simultaneously. I really like "gladiatorial" sounding bits as well.
Even today, how many fighting games exist can you chop people's head off like this and watch the body fall down. It just never gets freaking old. Wouldn't mind a HD remastering of this game.
Mortal Kombat is a huge fan of it. But I'd say this really needs a deep redo too, regardless, Influenced Prince of Persia and kickstarted the fighting game.
I'm 40 years old and i'm still here in 2023, listening to this legendary Commodore 64 game soundtrack 🎵🎶 😼🤘🕹️. I had BARBARIAN for my Commodore 64 as a tape version in a compilation called WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS. I believe, i still have this game for my Amiga 500. Retrospective greetings from Vantaa, Finland 🇫🇮 😺👍🕹️.
In the world of gaming OSTs - it'd be too easy to start listing off the most widely appreciated ones. Mario/Zleda/Halo - all with good reason. But if I think of a single system's "discography" - with all it's composers - and most of all, the ability to still provoke an emotional response after all these years? I always start here - with the SID Forever a classic - RIP Richard Joseph
Mongol General: Conan! What is best in life? Conan: To cut the head of your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the awesome tune of Barbarian in the C64 Mongol General: That is good! That is good.
This music, along with the music for the first level of The Last Ninja, are probably the two greatest examples of what the c64 sound chip was capable of. If only more games these days could get such atmospheric tracks on a limited budget and technical limitations.
I loved to play this game on the side that gives the background where you have to save the princess I only managed to do it once, I'm surprised no one's tried to remake the game original soundtrack and all
As an old user of the Amstrad CPC, it's always frustrating to notice that C64 most of the time had better versions! There is a part in this music that didn't even exist on CPC...
This game was sold with a poster of gorgeous page 3 girl Maria Whittaker in a skimpy bikini. I have to wonder, thinking back, how many parents bought 'little Timmy' this game thinking it was all innocent fun, without realising how their kids actually wanted the poster more than the game itself ;)
Always open with the head chop on the second guy (green shirt above), 100% success rate. I could toy with the last black shirt guy but f@&% me I never got close to the wizard.
is there sounds in this track in parts where it sounds like its skipping a bit or is it just me ? its good quality , it just sounds like its skipping in some parts

exactly. it sounds orchestral. not just using arpeggio but cleverly swapping patterns in and out.
2 intruments per channel + 1 samples
Soon 46 and I loved this game as teen.
soon 48 still loving the game
A true classic that will never fail to please and chill. Thank you, Richard Joseph!
This tune is still fantastic after all these years
...and it is still today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
39 and I'm here.
Hey, me too!
33 ur welcome
And now you're 41... need a hand, crossing the street already?
41 ;-)
Dammit Chris! You beat me to it 😡

Yeah, its freaking awesome.
Mortal Kombat is a huge fan of it. But I'd say this really needs a deep redo too, regardless, Influenced Prince of Persia and kickstarted the fighting game.
This is just SO massive... This can never be forgotten...
49 in 24 still here for Barbarian.
Still giving me the chills when I hear it after so many years!! THANKSSS!!!
Mortal Kombat has a lot of props to give to this game.
Outta fuckin nowhere today at work this game's music started playing in my head and wouldn't stop
I love this track, been loving it since I was 7. Seriously it's super awesome and great for all of it's 6½ minutes.
2:15 immediate goosebumps :D
Yes! I'm ready to chop the head of anything! :-D
Yes but it sounded different and then remembered that I used to play this with C64 using different SID chip than this recording
Immediately felt the urge to walk backwards, spamming the button!
I so loved this soundtrack, one of the best on c64 if not the best. Damn, it looks like it was yesterday but it's really not XD
defender of the crown, even a masterpiece by richard 🙂

This 8 bits view and this sound bring me over the clouds and remind me my happiest era of my life which is impossible to taste again.
One of the rare examples, where 144p Quality is actually BETTER.
That would just make it muffled and flat sounding
Composer: Richard Joseph & Basil Poledouris (uncredited...)
This is music to my ears.
Mongol General: Conan! What is best in life?
Conan: To cut the head of your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the awesome tune of Barbarian in the C64
Mongol General: That is good! That is good.
5:30!
That fade, shimmering warble!
I play Elden Ring nowadays and this would suit perfectly some boss fights
Incredible music.
chopping of those heads and then see goblin pick them up was probably most biggest awe of my life
Masterpiece.
A super complex piece of music by any standard....

I agree, but I must also point out the SECOND level in Last Ninja, which is also a masterpiece.
@@Erik-vp5bmI agree with you. I think I would also add in Last Ninja 2 central park, Driller, Monty on the run and Auf Wiedersen Monty to the mix
A 3 octav masterpiece.
one of my favorite games ever!!! thanks for the upload, music always ruled!
amazing conversion of the conan the barbarian soundtrack
Yeah!
I'm glad I'm not the only one to have noticed that! :)
Heads off... So good so far... 👍
I've never beaten the wizard at the end, because nothing prepares you to his pattern of attack.
Awesome and cool, this, rambo theme and delta in-game music are my faves from the good old c64 days.Still have all my old comps, the memories! :)
I loved to play this game on the side that gives the background where you have to save the princess I only managed to do it once, I'm surprised no one's tried to remake the game original soundtrack and all
Richard Joseph I wish I wasn't born too late, you were the man & will always be ❤
A shame that no one yet has attempted to do this theme with a live orchestra.
mitrooper there's something close done by Asterion - Barbarian (Anvil of Death)
Right now, the top suggestion I get from youtube is an orchestral version of a medley including this :)
Oh, the the times, they have changed.
A couple of years late, but I found this one: ua-cam.com/video/7XpERLDlM1A/v-deo.html from 2017. Good stuff
It, like the game, is essentially ripped off from the Arnold Schwarzenegger Conan movies.
They have!

Thanks for posting this, brings back the memories.
2 people got headchopped in Lvl 1!
soon 52 and I love this game
coudl listen to an endless loop of this one and the last ninja, so epic
Who the fuck disliked that? I loved this game. And the fact that you could do a fatality aka decapitation while playing and not in the end!! :D
02:15 it really kicks in :D I will chop heads and get the girl >:@
Exactly!
R.I.P richard joseph.
one of the best Sid tunes ever......
Marco Sfogli done a great cover of this song on his second album.
I just listened, it is amazing! thanks!

@@LarsTragel-zh7ei Yeah that richness of color was something else.
Nostalgic and Brutal.
just a great musician with a great home synthesizer
They could have achieved this
real masterpiece!
Szerettem ezt a játékot.. C64.. King
Considering this, Monty on the Run, and The Last Ninja 2 , the commodore 64 had some jams.
The ultimate c64 theme
5:22 sounded very different depending of the SID chip you got.
This game was sold with a poster of gorgeous page 3 girl Maria Whittaker in a skimpy bikini. I have to wonder, thinking back, how many parents bought 'little Timmy' this game thinking it was all innocent fun, without realising how their kids actually wanted the poster more than the game itself ;)
quality
childhood.
great theme tune
Damn game music has no right being this good
Oh yeah I remember...
2:13 is VEEEERY "similar" to the Conan movie soundtrack
Immortal Tune
Rad theme
Wow, this is lit :O

Its 2am and i had to learn the notes at 3:48 on bass.
This music is pretty spiffy considering how primitive computers were then.
Back when I was a kid playing this, my thoughts playing this game were Conan.
There's beheading in this game! Quick, someone create the ESRB!
I listened a lot.. ;)
head clipping .. the best!
Heard that kids nowadays play some game called Mortal Combat 11, or something. Anybody know how many floppies I'd need to make a copy?
Bad ass game
is there sounds in this track in parts where it sounds like its skipping a bit or is it just me ?
its good quality , it just sounds like its skipping in some parts
0:12 Headbang !
yesss :D
No prob! :)
2:20
Your dad bought you this game for the hot Valkyrie on the cover.
I miss a sidplayer with mixer settings...
3:49 💀

@vlefteris Crom approves this Barbarian Theme! ροφλ!
