You felt a real sense of loneliness and solitude when that initial bassline thumps in. Especially coming off of the back of that tranquil piece of loader music which played prior to this level. And then it all kicks in and you realise that back then, the SID sorcerers truly were audio geniuses.
I wish more people would understand the significant impact this had on future computer games. And childhood memories! My all-time favorite game and soundtrack.
its the ringtone of Andrew garfield cellphone in his new film "under the silver lake" i recognized it on the spot from the last ninja. after what ? 30 Years? haha amazing song.
You know you are dealing with geniouses in music when 8-bit music from the 1980's are still giving people goosebumps in 2014. Holy hell, someone needs to breath life to these series again.
Im 46 years old...... I played the cassette C64 of this every second weekend when visiting my dad in 1987. These songs never left my head in all that time. And this is still a killer track
This piece is so unique... 80s-90s... everything was in the right place at the right time. Great machine, great musicians and fresh ideas. Oh, and don't forget limited 3 voice polyphony which revealed surprisingly unlimited soul.
I remember back in school, our teacher in music-class complained about all of these horrible squeaking and squealing sounds kids are confronted with when they are playing video games and Game Boy. He said that kids would lose touch with real music and with art in general. In the next lesson, I brought the Robocop-theme and Last Ninja-theme to school, which I recorded on tape from my C64. I asked him to listen to this track I brought because I wanted to prove that even video games have "real music". He really was impressed and said it would content real poetry. Then we started a discussion about the evolvement of music with the whole class and he stated that he might be wrong. He always was open to new things and was ready to learn a lesson himself.
Interesting how the melody later in the song is played in a drum like pattern to not only compliment the existing drums but too also make up for the lack of channels that the C64 had available for audio. The end result is something that sounds very full especially for the C64.
Same here. I was just a kid when playing in that game, and I was familiar with games that were much simpler(not always easier, but simpler to comprehend). Last ninja had many adventure components, I remember playing first and second game, and I never could beat any first level haha. But music stucked in my head for all eternity
It took me a while to finish it for the first time but after that, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat haha. Played it numerous times, what a gem and a milestone this game was!
Back as a child, I never got past the dragon, not knowing what I was supposed to do. With the internet and looking these things up, its so much easier.
I still find the bit at 1:17 playing through my head at random parts of the day, even after all these years. There were so many good tunes in last ninja 1 & 2
Still remember about the one minute mark, I closed my eyes and wanted to make games, imagined so much, could never have imagined how it is today though, but this did inspire me, and for that, and System3, I'll always be greatful. x
Used to love figuring these tunes out on my guitar back in the late 80's, and still to this day when I play live these melodies sneak into my playing without me even noticing it. When people say "Jeez that was a lovely line you played there...." I always tell them it was because of the Commodore 64, and in particular the Last Ninja series(although Last Ninja 3 was nowhere near as good musically imho). They really were great times for music in computer games, and that is definitely not nostalgia talking, its the tunes, they were brilliant. Hubbard and Tel also did phenomenal work, but the Last Ninja series has to be number one, right?
Yeah, I know, it's criminal. According to Wikipedia though, The Last Ninja was the most successful original game, selling 4 million. Then The Last Ninja 2 came out and sold 5,5 million, when the user base of C64s was 20 million, meaning that over 1 in 4 C64 users bought that game. Respect the ninja! Even the shitty NES port :) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Ninja, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Last_Ninja_2
I played this game so freaking hard, i freaking loved it, i was the youngest in the family, and i became the best at it, defeated samurais like nothing, worst part was jumping over the river in the start, so good.
I did not know that you could just walk past the guards. They are quite fast, so I thought that it was best to just stab them to death, as they rubberbanded onto you when you entered the scene. They do not respawn.
If I understand the description in the German video I found, it seems this guy: Gronkh als Vorlage Is the remixer of the original song we are now having the pleasure of listening to.
@Nindz81 :-) I guess a lot of us did that back then. To me the whole soundtrack is a great example of awesome classic game music. This tune in particular though was always my favorite, if I think of "Last Ninja" this is what first comes to my mind.
Ringtone of the main character from the movie Under Silver Lake, great choice, interesting movie :D
Andrew Garfield
RIP Ben Daglish, just heard. Devastated.
Somehow he lives on in his music!
My childhood in 3 minutes and 55 seconds. Just awesome!
:D You stole my words ... It makes me cry...
Me too, the game was worth firing up just for the loading music as well. :)
Check out this amazing remix. His Rambo II remix is unbelievably good too.

yessss
That opening bell-like synth sound. My god, its been what now 35 years and I still remember this synth sound like it was 1987.
Indeed one of the iconic examples of SID's ring modulation.
This is my favourite track of the entire Last Ninja saga.
Rest in Peace Ben Dalglish.
Ben Dalglish was only 21 years old when he composed this masterpiece! RIP. :(
masterpiece fits
Second favorite. I think Wilderness is slightly better. Awesome music though.
R.I.P., Ben Daglish. Still love this music, it will always bring back great memories.
those for people with dislikes dont deserve the internet!
Also used as the ringtone for the main character in the movie "Under the Silver Lake". Thanks for sharing the audio.
Come here last year because that movie, my favourite A24 movies
Saw that movie yesterday..... man , chills ran down my spine and a huge smile. Rembembered the game playing instantly.
People of culture in this one thread. Noice

36 years ago and I'm still listening to this
I wish more people would understand the significant impact this had on future computer games. And childhood memories! My all-time favorite game and soundtrack.
Rest in peace Ben, thank you for all those great moments and memories! You will be missed.
Apparently that's the track used in Under The Silver Lake as the main character's ringtone !
it is, from 1:55 :)
RIP Ben Daglish.
RIP Ben Daglish - a big name in the gaming industry.
its the ringtone of Andrew garfield cellphone in his new film "under the silver lake" i recognized it on the spot from the last ninja. after what ? 30 Years? haha amazing song.
I did too...dang, brought me right back to this level a very long time ago...hoping on lily pads and whatnot! :D
I Want That ringtone too haha

2017 and counting...
2018..
RIP Mr Daglish :-(
@@Neptun776 2019 :)
2019 and forever. This is my childhood. :)

It's like a children song that you've learned in kindergarden and never ever will forget, right
This piece is so unique... 80s-90s... everything was in the right place at the right time. Great machine, great musicians and fresh ideas. Oh, and don't forget limited 3 voice polyphony which revealed surprisingly unlimited soul.
To me the best song in this game
Been thinking that for the last 31 years mate lol
@@baggierols73 only because no one make it to level 2 LOL
Definitely one of the most iconic, if not the most iconic, C64 tune of all time.
So many great Last Ninja tunes, but this is my favourite. Was stuck on this level for ages as a kid.
I remember back in school, our teacher in music-class complained about all of these horrible squeaking and squealing sounds kids are confronted with when they are playing video games and Game Boy. I played this to my music teacher as well, recorded on tape... He was pleasantly impressed.
Maybe he did not know very well the impressive Game Boy's potential in music.
How we have evolved 😊
And cool teacher
RoboCop was stretch as it was composed as cinematic music. This is premium chip music so you had strong argument.
I can't press like enough times.
This makes me feel at peace. A Buddhist spell in the form of electronic music.
Love your Myth avatar!

Arpeggios galore, because the C64 couldn't play chords
Brings back so much memories. Getting goosebumps when i'm listening to this :)
I never passed the first level of this game, but the music stuck for ever.
+astuinpaskaan I played The Last Ninja only with a trainer und unlimited lives. You can make it easier if you try to evade some battles.

Ben Daglish - well i heard late - but if you are still floating around - you made me and my cousins happy - thanks man :)
R.I.P. Ben Daglish!
I remember coming home from the schoolyard with a copy of this. Totally blew my mind.
I still find the bit at 1:17 playing through my head at random parts of the day, even after all these years. There were so many good tunes in last ninja 1 & 2

Ben Daglish and Anthony Lees = champions ...
Devastated to find out they have both passed away. My childhood is slowly eroding away......
They didn't. They are immortal with those sounds. Like true ninjas... R.I.P.
Love the intro to this track - possibly the best use of ring modulation in C64 music.
My whole childhood is compacted into this track
I loved this game. I finished it. C64 rocks.
Me too, then I got The Last Ninja 2 for Christmas. Good times.
Loved these tunes back in the 80's, and they are still surprisingly pretty good.
i got this as my ringtone its sweet
A true masterpiece of his. RIP...
This tune is awesome, never gets old, when game music was funky!
Under the silver lake
Ben Dalglish was only 21 years old when he composed this masterpiece! RIP. :(
this game was ridiculously hard to play in comparison to todays games
but this theme just gives me the chills........
The best music track in the entire game (IMO)!!!
Totally! Same goes for the second game, the track from the first level, Central Park, is the best in the whole game. Imho!
maybe it's because most people only ever played the first level or 2 so that's all they really got to hear frequently.
*LMAO*
best chip tune ever, rip ben daglish
Love it! That's the old Ben Daglish awesomeness I know.
----- Happy 30th birthday Last Ninja !!! -----
The Last Ninja has been one of my favorites on the C64. I absolutely love this tune!
one of the most underappreciated scores ever.
Just awesome...
SOO wish I could play this game again ...in my 40's once a gamer always a gamer always 13l-15 lol what a great from System3
And still after all these years i remember any single note of "The Wastelands" and "The Palace". Thx for upping
The game itself was far too difficult requiring pixel perfect positioning but with this music you felt like a ninja and that's all that mattered!
Amazingly made with only 3 channels (simultaneous sounds)
Yup Ben Danglish and Anthony Lee did something special here with the SID chip. Ahhh the good ol 6581 :)
@@dash8brj This particular tune is only made by Ben Daglish. They didn't collaborate on any of the tracks. They made about half of the tracks each.

still awsome tune now even when i heard it first back in 1988
aaahhhhh......Childhood
the dissonant harmonies are amazing.
7 random mooks who had been defeated by the ninja found this video.
Press play on tape. Lordy I loved this game :)
Ben Daglish, Martin Galway, Chris Huelsbeck & Rob Hubbard
The Fantastic Four ! Chapeau !
Child memories are coming back.
outstanding
the best soundtrack ever
Hands down best C64 track
1:55 Under the Silver Lake, 2018. ringtone)
RIP
An iconic classic!
Quite simply the best song from any game, ever.
This is an awesome game. Even all these years later it manages to outshine some games of recent times. Cheers for the tunes.
Makes me sad that both composers of this game's soundtrack has passed.
RIP Ben Daglish 😭
legendary
Gets me so fired up!!
Incredible music :}
....und das war der geilste sound....
Hammer!!!
timeless, many thanks
Funny thing is there is people out there that had a C64 and never played this.

Ahhhh the good old C64 days 🤩🤩🤩

as they rubberbanded onto you when you entered the scene.
They do not respawn.
Awesome and classic !
I have no nostalgia for the C64 or this game but this is a fucking banging track
So epic that my goosebumps get goosebumps
timeless music
Genius game and music.
I'm waiting uncharted 3 in ps3 but last ninja and last ninja 2 stays a legend above all now especially the music of last ninja 2 central park.
First ever game I played in the western world. I loved it back then, still do now.
Thanks for uploading this! This music, year about 1987? And I can still remember this amaizing tune!
If I understand the description in the German video I found, it seems this guy:

Best one.
This tune is genius
1:48 whatatttt this is the real song of platypus 2 level 2
She caught on to the Oriental theme at any rate.

I guess a lot of us did that back then.
