Check the fluids, like the clutch, power steering, coolant, and oil. @@tonybanana4016 everything that @ChrispyKing said are all very good points. Things to look for on a DelSol specifically would be rust anywhere on the rear fender Wells, specifically the back corner on the seam that connects to the rear bumper. Also check the rocker panels, those tend to rot out on sols. Learn the different engines. There are 3. Know which engine you're getting. Some people try to sell off a d16 VTEC as if it's the same as a B16. It's not. They're very different. So know which engine is in the car before you buy it. I agree, loose steering on my Sol too but everyone always says that it's big for a small car when they get in lol. The throw on my shift is super short, even shorter than my buddy's old C5 Z06. @@rafaelz1580 I agree, delsol is definitely the right move for the taller people. After this video I took my 6’4 friend to Florida to pick up a rust free delsol and drive back to mass. He fit better in that car than he fits in my C5. Do with that information what you will haha
4:28 "Very Basic" I feel I need to correct you on this. The Del Sol especially your model had a lot of extras compared to the contemporary vehicles that were on the road. Available gear were: Airbag ABS brakes Vtec (far superior than even a decade younger VVT (Toyota) and Vanos (BMW) as it had intake and lift) Power Windows Cruise Control in some Cup holders 4 x speakers (unlike the miata) Not to mention AC and Auto options Overseas had: Traction Control Climate Control Tweeters Map lights Leather Interior Driving lights Electric roof etc. I understand compared to today's standard of touch screen, reverse camera and reverse sensor etc it looks basic but that comparison is not really fair. The real comparison is with cars on the road at the time were some did not even have half of that.
Appreciate the in depth comment. It will be useful for those looking at these two cars and I should have gone more in depth when I mentioned this. Because you're correct, the DelSol, was very ahead of it's time. But when making this video I had the mindset of what consumers are used to this day in age and by those standards it is a dinosaur. I may actually make a follow up video because of this comment so I appreciate that
Definedly the del sol would be my pick, if owned one for 9 years and have been building and renewing it, taking good care of it. Now its repainted and the b16a2 has been rebuild to 195hp. Love my summer ride
I am a original owner of a 1997 Honda Del Sol Si. It is my daily car with 207,000 miles. A very reliable car. When I was looking for a Two seater in the 1990’s I drove both cars. I found the Miata drove harsher than the Del Sol. The trunk also convinced me. The Del Sol is a two person car and luggage. I choose the Si over double overhead cam , because it would work on regular fuel. For me the double vtec did not seem that much faster. I never regretted that decision. The car run and drives great.
You're a lucky man. I would have loved to own this car new. I do think its funny though, i never would have bought one unless I NEEDED a small daily good on gas. They didn't even come to mind when I was searching for stuff. I was looking at every honda except the delsol just because I forgot about it. And now I love it more than ever. Definitely one of the most fun cars I've ever owned

Very nice video ! I think i did a great choice with my 95 Delsol and with the B18C GSR it's even better. Excellent video for someone who's searching for a small car !
Highly recommend getting one, the NAs are my favorite looks wise. But if you can ever pick up a Mazda speed model, I think those were the NBs but I could be mistake. Get a very tuneable turbo engine out of the factory. Really fun cars
Thanks! Yea I absolutely love mine. Josh sadly had to sell his miata recently but one of our other friends bought it so thankfully it stayed in the family!
Definitely del sol. Im a honda guy, but i hate convertibles but i love targa tops. I've really been wanting a del sol si/ vtec or a crx si. Been going back and forth between the two. Also, in my honest opinion the only thing the miata has going for it is the pop ups 😅
I'm with you haha, I'm not much of a convertible guy but I love targas. Probably cause vehicles still retain their shape whereas convertibles give this elongated look that I'm not a fan of. And the pop ups are great but I love rwd so I'd still say the Miata checks that box for me. But hey everyone's different. Both great cars none the less!
I got a del sol SI with the Z6 and I can't help my self taking it to 7600 every time I drive it and with the S20 si trans and having LSD it's a blast with the short gears.
Crazy I found this, I just raced my friend freshly rebuilt NA Miata against my 97 Del sol si but has a d16y7 so no vtec and I ended up putting a car between us. Was pretty happy with the del sol for being very slow
Oh yea I believe it, these 90s Honda engines were something else. The D I pulled out of my swap car also had no vtec and I really was pretty impressed with its performance
I was going to get a NA Miata a few months back, but my parents made me get an 09 Accord because it’s safer 🙄. Still want a Miata, but they’re going up in price and I can’t find a clean Del Sol to save my life
Yeah theyre always climbing. Delsols are tough cause they didn't make many of them. Depending on where you're located always look south of you. Less snow means less rust usually. Even if you have to drive a little
I own a 1991 Miata NA bone stock with the 1.6L engine. I have a friends 1995 Delsol I am test driving today to buy as a second little sports car. I am getting the Delsol for the highway commute which is more fun on the highways... I am keeping the Miata because I plan to play around with doing a 3" lift with 24" A/T's and will be drifting it in the future... possibly with a 2004-2008 Acura TSX engine (K24A2) swap. That or just Turbo it to start and just stay there...
As a delsol owner i would love a mx5... but as a mechanic i dont even need the video to decide 😅😂 Delsol has way more power(The VTI/SIR b16), cooler options like the e-roof and is better in general... better engine, suspension, body.... They both got rust probs, mx5 rots away 10x as fast mx5 has RWD, thats a +1 thats basicly it.. If they made the delsol like the should have done in the first place.... mid engine and rwd like the mr2,it would be one of the best cars ever...🤷🏼♂️
I'll be honest. I think about how I wish the DelSol was rear wheel drive, a lot. And if it was mid engine that would just be the holy Grail. But I'm so grateful they made it the way they did. Because I don't think I'd get a chance to enjoy mine like I do now. If they made it even just rwd it would have surely outshined the Miata and would come with a fat "drift tax" like the miata, 240sx etc. But then again maybe if it was more successful they would still be making it today which would be wicked cool
@@scooch988 Do miata's have drift tax over there?.... Here in EU they are hella cheap, Delsol's are super cheap in Holland and UK... UK is a goldmine for jdm cars, u could literally buy a SIR delsol for under 1000£$ or a miata for like 500/1000 bucks or so. Most sol's are getting parted out, people dont like them and since we got only 1.6 d16 si and b16 SIR, they all get used as swap cars for civic's.
@@DeUnoReverseKaart haha that's so dumb. Why bother taking the good engine out a DelSol when the DelSol is so much cooler than a regular Civic haha. Like just take the b series out of a crv or something. And yea anything rwd in the us has the drift tax unfortunately
@@scooch988 I think they do that because 99% of al civic's(ed,eg,ek etc) are d-serie's with drumbrakes 242mm and crv b20 without vtec.. A delsol is the cheapest option if you want a complete b serie vtec swap here.... They also find the delsol a fake honda 🙄 delsol is kind of a underdog in EU. But i dont care t.b.h, only a couple left including mine and they are only rising in value 🤷🏼♂️
@@DeUnoReverseKaart that's too bad, I feel like the DelSol in reality was a flop, I personally think they should have made it rear wheel drive and mid engined like the MR2. It would have been the legend of it's time. But it still brings a smile to my face every time I drive it and it's definitely a true Honda haha. Glad to see at least you're enjoying yours haha
Even just a d series manual in the del sol is still fun. Never gonna win any drag races, but if you take the time to learn how to drive fwd, you can take corners fast. The weird thing though is you have to corner at just the right angle in the right gear with a fwd or it oversteers for days. But when you get the precision to predict a corner and adjust for it with minimal braking, the del sol will sail through it without looking flashy at all, like you didnt even try
Agreed, I remember seeing a DelSol at an auto cross event before I got mine and he was sideways more than once. And even he wasn't sideways one of the rear tires was off the ground haha. I feel like fwd is more difficult to control than people think when it comes to performance driving
@@scooch988 Very much so. At least with a Rear wheel drive you just spin out , but I meant understeer in my last comment. You get understeer when you come in too fast or too slow. If you don't predict entry and exit of the corner, you'll just plow right into it
Gret video 👍🏼, personaly i am going for the miata because it's cheaper (in my country), i am very small 5.6 so i won't have a problem and the rear wheel drive + snow and an empty parking lot it's all i want but gotta wait 3 more years and then i can get it, great video again 👍🏼.
Either one of these will bring more smiles to your face than you can imagine. But having the ability to slide around is a great reason to go Miata. It's gonna be a long 3 years but it will be well worth the wait. Thanks for the positive comment!
Really cool video ! Honestly i'm still not sure which one to choose 🤔 I was wondering if 124k miles on the Honda crx del sol esi is fine or not ? I mean it's a really high mileage but it's a Japanese car so idk ?🤷♂️😅 I struggle to find some with less miles, so that's why i'm not sure if I should consider it or not
@@vilau3310 honestly every car is different. It all depends on how it was maintained. I bought mine initially with 199,000. But I bought it off a friend of mine who had owned it for a couple years and is a Honda tech. The woman before him that owned it bought it used in 1996 and took very good care of it, she actually brought it to my friends repair shop so he knew the car before he owned it. But even so, there was no telling if I would have a catastrophic issue 3 days into ownership. It’s always possible. Just do your research on any car you’re looking at, look at common problems and when you go look at a car you want, ask about those issues and if they’ve been addressed or look for yourself and see if the one you’re looking at has any of the common issues. And that can be applied to any car. Most likely an older delsol or Miata won’t have a crazy problem, but even the new one I have that I swapped the black car from this videos engine into has some electrical problems. The body is perfect. And it’s got a rebuilt engine, but as you can see, other things can fail. Every used car purchase is a risk. Yeah I think it all comes down to what the end goal is with the car. If you want to slide you have to go Miata. But if that's not overly important to you the sol is more fun in my opinion, plus like I mentioned, it's a little bigger

I always tell people, no matter what the car is, your first mods should be contributing to your end goal for the car. I personally like a car that handles well and is functional. I'll usually go with a catbsck, lowering springs/coils and wheels and tires. The DelSol to me handles great but it definitely could be a little stiffer. So I'll be doing coils in the very near future. And that will be my first performance mod for this car so I'm pretty excited. Hope this helps!
So we actually didn't get the trans top in the states. You have to remove it manually. Now although it's one of the coolest things I've ever seen, I'm glad we didn't get it cause I've heard if it breaks it's very expensive to fix haha

Yea the engines Honda was putting out back then were far superior, but there’s a reason everyone tracks Miata’s, that drivetrain is tough to beat. The Del Sol especially your model had a lot of extras compared to the contemporary vehicles that were on the road.
Available gear were:
Airbag
ABS brakes
Vtec (far superior than even a decade younger VVT (Toyota) and Vanos (BMW) as it had intake and lift)
Power Windows
Cruise Control in some
Cup holders
4 x speakers (unlike the miata)
Not to mention AC and Auto options
Overseas had:
Traction Control
Climate Control
Tweeters
Map lights
Leather Interior
Driving lights
Electric roof etc.
Congrats man! Love to see people not only keeping these things running, but keeping them pure with the proper engines. 195 is perfect for these
Glad I caught this video, lookin at buying a del sol but didn’t know if I was gonna fit in it
Yeah it's a little bigger which is nice. I barely fit in the Miata. But the delsol is more than comfortable
Im going with a Del Sol. Easy pick for me
Can't say I disagree with you, if it only it was rwd haha
I am a original owner of a 1997 Honda Del Sol Si. It is my daily car with 207,000 miles. A very reliable car. When I was looking for a
Two seater in the 1990’s I drove both cars.
I also am an original owner of a 1997 Del Sol Si. It's been my daily driver for 27 years now.

Very nice video ! I think i did a great choice with my 95 Delsol and with the B18C GSR it's even better. Excellent video for someone who's searching for a small car !
Thanks Jason! I think I made the right choice too, except when I'm in the mood to do some sliding😉
I have a 93 Del sol I do want a Miata love little cars
Highly recommend getting one, the NAs are my favorite looks wise. But if you can ever pick up a Mazda speed model, I think those were the NBs but I could be mistake. Get a very tuneable turbo engine out of the factory. Really fun cars
I recently got my 94 Del Sol Si and love to see you guys enjoying yours
Thanks! Yea I absolutely love mine. Josh sadly had to sell his miata recently but one of our other friends bought it so thankfully it stayed in the family!
Own a 93 S and have had it since ‘96; 2nd owner. Love the little car..
Thats so cool you've had it for so long. I hope to have mine forever
Definitely would choose Miata rwd ☝️
Can't say I blame you, nothing better than being able to slide at will!
Nice info on the vtec del sols always wondered how many b16s they had
Thanks! And yea from what I’ve read it was about 70k but it’s been so many years who knows how accurate it is haha
I literally daily a 93 del sol SI and my weekend car is a 1990 NA Miata 😂. Both great cars
I envy you, you have the best of both worlds 😂
Excuse me? I have a s2000 sir
@@abrahamfabela8457 i love s2000s, but itd HAVE to have the hardtop lol
I got a del sol SI with the Z6 and I can't help my self taking it to 7600 every time I drive it and with the S20 si trans and having LSD it's a blast with the short gears.
Agreed, they're not fast but there's something about how these old homda drive thats so addicting. Its like nothing else on the road and I love it
Honestly I would love the del sol so much more than the Miata except the one thing is it’s fwd so you can’t have as much fun as you can in the Miata
Haha sounds like you're facing the same dilemma as me!
@@scooch988 yeah lol i still imagine both of them being pretty fun to drive tho
Thats so sick! Best of both worlds right there. When the miata is done definitely send pics to my Instagram @scooch988. Id love to see it
As a delsol owner i would love a mx5... but as a mechanic i dont even need the video to decide 😅😂
Delsol has way more power(The VTI/SIR b16), cooler options like the e-roof and is better in general... better engine, suspension, body....
They both got rust probs, mx5 rots away 10x as fast
mx5 has RWD, thats a +1
thats basicly it..
If you don't predict entry and exit of the corner, you'll just plow right into it
@@bobwarpath2395 yeah understeer is my least favorite. But I'm no stranger to it hahaha
Had a 94 miata and just picked up a 95 del sol today. I like them, they're fun butttttttt I like my 08 solstice best
Only driven a solstice a very short distance but definitely a lot of fun. It's the only convertible I had trouble seeing out the back of 😂
Gret video 👍🏼, personaly i am going for the miata because it's cheaper (in my country), i am very small 5.6 so i won't have a problem and the rear wheel drive + snow and an empty parking lot it's all i want but gotta wait 3 more years and then i can get it, great video again 👍🏼.
Either one of these will bring more smiles to your face than you can imagine. But having the ability to slide around is a great reason to go Miata. It's gonna be a long 3 years but it will be well worth the wait. Thanks for the positive comment!
Really cool video ! Honestly i'm still not sure which one to choose 🤔
I was wondering if 124k miles on the Honda crx del sol esi is fine or not ? I mean it's a really high mileage but it's a Japanese car so idk ?🤷♂️😅
I struggle to find some with less miles, so that's why i'm not sure if I should consider it or not
@@vilau3310 honestly every car is different. But the only way to find out if you got a good one or not is to take the leap and hope for the best. I know this was long but I hope it helps you in some way 😊
@@scooch988 Wow thank you so much for answering! I love to see people like this on the internet willing to give some of their time to help strangers! I will keep your advices in mind when I will buy my car. 😁👍

Yeah I think it all comes down to what the end goal is with the car. If you want to slide you have to go Miata. But if that's not overly important to you the sol is more fun in my opinion, plus like I mentioned, it's a little bigger
@@scooch988 and also its so rare, kinda invest here hahah

I go back and forth but I do love the miata, just for what it offers. But sometimes I think once the suspension is dialed in and I really get to drive it hard on some back roads I might change my mind
Delsol’s chassis is too flexy. Park 3 quarter angle on a driveway and see if you can take off or put on the roof.
Oh you definitely can’t. But welcome to the life of owning a 90s car with a removable top haha. Do the same with the Miata and you might be able to get it off but good luck getting it to strap back in

Any first good mods I should add to my del sol ?
I always tell people, no matter what the car is, your first mods should be contributing to your end goal for the car. I personally like a car that handles well and is functional. I'll usually go with a catbsck, lowering springs/coils and wheels and tires. The DelSol to me handles great but it definitely could be a little stiffer. So I'll be doing coils in the very near future. And that will be my first performance mod for this car so I'm pretty excited. Hope this helps!
Scooch awesome thanks so much
No mention of the electric trans top on the del sol, it makes it look like a transformer and imo is the best part of the car.
So we actually didn't get the trans top in the states. You have to remove it manually. Now although it's one of the coolest things I've ever seen, I'm glad we didn't get it cause I've heard if it breaks it's very expensive to fix haha
@@scooch988 quite the opposite infact, honda uk wont touch it but there are specialists that repair them. I got mine fixed for £120 and has been working for 5 years since. it does add alot of weight though.
@@lunarshteve oh that's far less expensive than the forums made is sound haha. And yea I'm also very grateful for the weight savings. The car is perfectly balanced how it is without the weight haha
The made the key components like the gears from the trans top from plastic, they did that so the gears would break before the electric engine's would sieze up. The gears itself are cheap to replace and buy👌
@@DeUnoReverseKaart yeah the guy that repaired mine showed me the little packet of plastic cogs from honda, they were cheap it was the labour that took the most of my £120. still alot cheaper than repairing a modern electric roof thats for sure.

And I cant fault you for that. Atill probably the most fun car I've ever owned haha

Had my B16 del sol uk spec for about 6 years now and love driving it, more exclusive than Mx5 and you never tire of hearing engine noise when you hit vtec. The electric rear window is really great feature as its much less windy when thats open, also when you have uk weather, with 'rear window up and heater on full because air comes back towards front of cockpit heater doesn't really do much, rear down and front is warm with heater, just need something to keep neck warm.
