- Filmed in the Kruger park by Brent Schnupp, where he managed to watch this amazing interaction between elephants and hyenas and lions and hyenas.
Hyenas will flee when they see one male lion but fight when they see four lionesses reason being they know that male lions will fight to the death for something they believe its theirs, while lionesses will flee to avoid injuries. in this sighting its the hyenas who chose to flee from a kill they had originally stole from the lions but there was relatively little late to interest the lions.

They didn’t run when they saw the elephant that’s probably 5 times bigger than the male lion but when they saw the male lion they ran as fast as they could. That tells you a lot about the 🦁

I love how they just look at the lioness like ya and what are you gonna do. Then as soon as the male lion gets visible. The defensive stance fades to a retreat for our lives.
There is good reason for this. It's not so much that the males are bigger, but that they are much more aggressive. The female will drive the hyena's off and not chase them down. If a male lion catches a hyena… game over. They say a lioness can hold off about 4 or 5 hyenas. But I saw a footage of 2 males take on a clan of over 20. And the clan ran away.

What makes the hyenas so successful is not just their determined tenacity and the ability to intimidate leopards, cheetahs and lionesses,
but also their ability to retreat and take evasive action when necessary. They will take risks but are shrewd enough to stay well clear of the male lions. Here the hyenas are exercising patience while summing up the opposition!
I've said many times b4 and I repeat... Male lions are an epitome of fearlessness and raw power and strength and they are extremely defiant even when the odds are stacked against them.

More likely she is just full (it's their kill apparently) and getting her pregnant is the aim (her aim, she starts and ends any tryst, by the time she calls a halt, he'll be quite happy about it). I've seen a pair mate at 6-minute intervals.

Hyenas instinctively know that lioness will give chase, but in the end won’t kill. However they know if a dominant male lion catches one of them, he will kill it. That’s why even 30+ hyenas won’t fight a single male lion.
I grew up partially in East Africa, and we used to chase hyenas just to see them run. I think they are scared of male lions and people.

@Harzburgitic ~ no I didn't, hyenas back off from many other big animals... but they are very 'chill' animals too...videos online show them feeding from the same carcass as lioness, jackals, other hyenas (of course) vultures, maribou storks, LEOPARDS!! Hyenas are far more willing to share, there are videos of a hyena and a leopard sharing a fresh kill! The leopard, of course keeps up a steady snarl/growl, while eating...the funny hyena just ripping into the meat, eating 3× the amount of food... there is also footage of hyenas and lioness eating a dead hippo, IN the water! But I simply cannot find that footage again 😥 spotted hyenas are very smart animals.... they gage each confrontation, with each animal as is, each day, with caution and respect...
