There is good reason for this. It's not so much that the males are bigger, but that they are much more aggressive. The female will drive the hyena's off and not chase them down. If a male lion catches a hyena… game over. They say a lioness can hold off about 4 or 5 hyenas. But I saw a footage of 2 males take on a clan of over 20. And the clan ran away.
I confess that I did lol. I wanted to see if they really reacted to the male alone. And they did. They were on alert when they saw the female, but when the male came… they ran 🏃♂️ 😒

@Harzburgitic ~ no I didn't, hyenas back off from many other big animals... but they are very 'chill' animals too...videos online show them feeding from the same carcass as lioness, jackals, other hyenas (of course) vultures, maribou storks, LEOPARDS!! Hyenas are far more willing to share, there are videos of a hyena and a leopard sharing a fresh kill! The leopard, of course keeps up a steady snarl/growl, while eating...the funny hyena just ripping into the meat, eating 3× the amount of food... there is also footage of hyenas and lioness eating a dead hippo, IN the water! But I simply cannot find that footage again 😥 spotted hyenas are very smart animals.... they gage each confrontation, with each animal as is, each day, with caution and respect...

There’s nothing here to support what the title says. They hyenas could just be afraid of two lions, or they waited to scatter until the lions got too near. The title is just jumping to the most “interesting” conclusion.
