Still marvel at Jeff as a high schooler drumming on the Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour. My wife and I first saw him at age 19, performing with the duo at a 1973 concert in Fort Wayne, Indiana. One year later in April 1974 we attended our first Steely Dan concert at the U. of Toledo, and who do we see tandem drumming alongside Jim Hodder but a 20 year-old Jeff Porcaro. He would contribute mightily to their brilliant 1975 album "Katy Lied."
A Beautiful tribute. After visiting my own Father's grave on Sept 9, 2012 [He would been 100].. upon getting in my car and turning it on there on the radio was Rosanna..I took a minute to reflect on the time when I myself was playing drums and what an inspiration Jeff Porcaro was to all of us drummers. well the next thing knew I was driving up the hill to Lincoln Terr to pay my respects. RIP MY FRIEND.
I'm literally 12 years old, Jeff is my biggest inspiration, I'm listening to him everyday! I think more people should listen to this beast and his amazing work!
My faithful companion, I've lost my way once again A prisoner of darkness, I let you down my friend A heart left abandoned takes so long to heal its wounds Your touch not forgotten, the end of the dream It comes too soon, in this lonely room Till I leave this world, always know that I will surrender my heart to the sky Oh our love doesn't end here, it lives forever on the wings of time The road that I travel, don't know which way I should turn Till I find the answer, know that the fire within me will always burn Angel of mercy, please, why so much pain? I cry for forgiveness, I'm the destitute man Who still remains, it's so hard to explain Till I leave this world, always know that Sometimes I feel just like crying I can't turn my back, all these years I've been trying A vision of you keeps reappearing to me You can't blame yourself, just reach out your hand and believe We sail in dark waters, Lord give me some peace of mind Temptation before me, ahead lies the tower of truth that I must find To you I will climb Till I leave this cruel world far behind, always know that
our love for jeff p will last forever on the wings of time. he's inspired so many drummers over the decades. any drummer that has been in toto. would get a smile from jeff p in heaven. nobody can replace jeff. they can only come close.
Jeff was the sound of all the great music coming out of the LA music scene in the mid to late 70's, and all of the 80's. I still hear tunes from the 80's, and I say, that sounds just like Jeff, only to check later to find out that is was Jeff. He has a certain feel and groove that can't be put into words, or explained. It's just magic, that was only bestowed upon Jeff. There will never be another, as it's impossible to capture the essence of Mr Jeffery Porcaro.
To say that Jeff was a monster drummer would be a grotesque under-statement. He was truly, truly not only one of a kind with a distinctive sound of his own but Jeff Porcaro is absolutely one of the best drummers in the history of rock 'n roll. Period. Of course, he shines bright on Toto's work but it's his work on a few hundred of albums from the mid 70s until 1992 as a studio musician that forges his legacy firmly. In the late 70s, while full ensconced in the throes of punk rock and many other genres, Porcaro grabbed me with his AOR day job work and I started to simply collect albums where he or Steve Lukather appeared on(and other members of Toto, for that matter but always Porcaro/Lukather). They'd take the most middling major label artist and lift an average sounds out of the depths of the ground and soar to the sky. They were/are/always will be a special session duo for me. Wish someone would make a documentary on these guys - and honor the others like Tris Imboden, Steve Gadd, Waddy Wachtel, Rick Marotta, Chris Spedding, etc. THOSE guys all have stories that should be heard...and documented.
I've never heard any other drummer in the field of popular music playing so genuinely like Jeff used to do. He was literally the heartbeat of Toto. Even on hand drums like dharbouka or dholak, it would take years to follow his beats and shuffles after hearing. And the song...These are the words of a true human. God bless the lyrics writer and the composer! At the beginning of this year, two death cases happened in my circle of near ones: at first, my History teacher from secondary school, has burnt in a bus accident in Verona, then in the next month, my maternal grandmother of whom I had been taking care for 2,5 months, has passed away, and later, in this June, my doggie Zserbó, also passed away right on her 16th birthday. When these cases happened, I shared "The Wings of Time" on Facebook. Since I've been working at the Open-Air Ethnographical Museum (Skansen) of Szentendre, another meaning has been added to this song for me. In this year, the Skansen is 50 years old: on the jubilee function in June, I sang Donovan's "Little Church" from the movie Brother Sun, Sister Moon in the choir of well-singing museum workers. Since then, the story of St. Francis of Assisi's becoming a monk, has been haunting me. The icing on the cake is that His birthday (5th July) is my guru mantra birthday (I mean that's when I got my guru mantra initiation). About St. Francis' order mate being killed by the men of Bishop Guido, I remembered this song. The lyrics would be absolutely suitable for an innocent, modest person mourning a true friend. So many people, animals and forests (NB. I'm a vegetarian since 2015) die because of others' unjustice, greediness and egoism, and nowadays the limit is extremely weak because of misinterpreted freedom...and what are the reactions for death? Sullen faces, rigidly uttered condolence wishes, competition among the relatives in buying a bigger tombwreath than the other, atomised mourning, ignorance towards the significance of our life on the Earth. Humble souls are mostly thought to be geeks to ignore, or weirdos to surround with fake admiration. Sad that this decade's popular music doesn't feed such composers performers and lyrics writers who maintain the fragment of hope with such hymns of humbleness. It's divine mercy that Toto is still together despite the loss of Jeff and his brother Michael, and continue creating such musical gems. To sum up, if we didn't have Toto, we wouldn't even believe that professional pop musicians take time and energy to think about the meaning of this earthly life.
21st anniv of Jeffs passing last week, Aug 5 which is the day before my birthday. Thanks again for this moving tribute to Jeff. What a legend of a drummer and a great human being.
Very well done. Obviously this production was a labor of love. First time I heard Lowdown itwas the drum licks that pulled me in and I've been a fan of Jeff ever since. RIP, buddy, from a fellow musician. Gone too soon......
In America e in Italia. Addio grande Jeff
Jeff Porcaro has touched my life without question. When I read about the circumstances of his death, I broke down into tears. MY GOD this world has missed him in these years. Jeff, thank you so much for allowing me to be a part of your world with your playing. Surviving Porcaro family, you are so lucky to have had Jeff in your family and close to you. We are all very lucky to have had him in presence when we did. Rest in peace Jeff my brother...
I remember the day my girlfriend back then told me that Jeff had died...and for a moment I just stood there stunned and just could not relate to anything she had just told me even after showing me the clip in local community paper where I was living in Norway at the time.. Still think about you every day Jeff.
Only Jeff Porcaro plays like Jeff Porcaro. There is a lot of amazing drummers in this world and may be there is a few with a similar level. But nobody has the "Jeff-Porcaro-feeling". R.I.P., Jeff.
You can get the info on his numbered grave site thru the main gate entrance to Forest Lawn Memorial Hollywood....hes buried at The Lincoln Memorial site. Good luck👍
Gone but never forgotten-Jeff's legion of fans will never let his soul and spirit die-I hear him all around me everytime I listen to anything he played on
Simply one of the most influential drummers of all time, just go and re-listen to the track 'Home of the Brave', and see how Jeff just drives the band relentlessly with an inner fury of intellectual musicality and a fervent passion for the music. A giant amongst tall people. For those about to rock... King Porcaro, we most humbly salute you!
I know your post was 5 years ago but "Home of The Brave" and "These Chains" are incredible songs fueled by Jeff and his passionate and tasty playing. RIP Jeff

Ryder Grimes let’s not forget Fergie Fredericson.
My faithful companion, I've lost my way once again
A prisoner of darkness, I let you down my friend
A heart left abandoned takes so long to heal its wounds
Your touch not forgotten, the end of the dream
It comes too soon, in this lonely room
Till I leave this world, always know that
I will surrender my heart to the sky
Oh our love doesn't end here, it lives forever on the wings of time
The road that I travel, don't know which way I should turn
Till I find the answer, know that the fire within me will always burn
Angel of mercy, please, why so much pain?
I cry for forgiveness, I'm the destitute man
Who still remains, it's so hard to explain
Till I leave this world, always know that
Sometimes I feel just like crying
I can't turn my back, all these years I've been trying
A vision of you keeps reappearing to me
You can't blame yourself, just reach out your hand and believe
We sail in dark waters, Lord give me some peace of mind
Temptation before me, ahead lies the tower of truth that I must find
To you I will climb
Till I leave this cruel world far behind, always know that
