    Exciting news about the house! I too have been really despondent lately, so much FUD, the looming federal election, the past US election, in particular Musk making me not want to have anything to do with Tesla or anyone who spruiks the brand.
    But I just know I love driving my EV and living in my solar powered house.

      same here, i still love our Tesla, its still fit for purpose, but Elon, arrgghh... dont care for him at all (we sold our TSLA shares recently its obvious he's not doing much with Tesla and wish he would move on from it to do whatever he wants. but im not going to let his politics influence my experiences and fun driving EVs and renewable adventures

    Inland NSW resident here. Live off-grid for over 20 years on an ever evolving system. My experienes: 1) New solar panels are amazing in price, peak and more importantly low light efficiency and acceptance angle. There is almost no point in getting older 2nd hand panels. 2) You want panels in the East, North and a lot of them in the West, particularly when you have aircon. 3) If you are happy to 'Live a solar life' meaning to adjust your activities to the available sunshine you can get away with a tiny battery, 7kWh LFP in my case. 4) The charge rate of an EV on Type2 can be changed dynamically. This means you can charge directly off solar with a very small buffer battery. In my case I have 12kWp panels (rescued from the tip) and an 8kW inverter (=32A single phase) and a home made Type 2 adapter which adjusts or even stops charging in modifying the PWM Control Pilot signal controlled by the voltage of the buffer battery (To my knowledge such a controller is not commercially available). 5) Here in Australia the power companies will always take the piss out of consumers, the only way to deal with that is to go off-grid.

      awesome, we work from home so thinking a grid connection as last resort backup might be good, but most places we are looking at are single phase, so might need a transformer upgrade and some distance of cable installed for 3 phase, we are happy with not exporting anything, export is so low now its not worth it anyway. for the price of the system we have at home now (sold, 9.6Kw with 2 powerwalls 27Kwh) we can now get a 30Kw system and 3 powerwalls! we also have 48kwh of Samsung batteries we plan to use as workshop power, home backup. at this stage it looks like a complete off grid system might be the better option as connection costs alone are more than double urban prices. still dong a lot or research and collecting quotes at the moment, but cant really move ahead until we buy a place.

      @SydneyEV The grid is an expensive backup. Chances are there is a black out when you need it or you get a surge from a lightning strike into an overhead power line even far away zapping your gear. You don't need 3 phase, Single phase 32A gives 7.4kW which easily charges an EV.

    so if planning to do home automation, are you going to have a home server for different things like video content, do you have a desired area to live yet?

    • @RayJohnson1980
      @RayJohnson1980 19 днів тому

      suggest a look few old servers to make those home automations work with your power and appliances

    • @SydneyEV
      @SydneyEV  19 днів тому

      yep we already have a large powerful home server and running a lot of automation on home assistant. (its also running my uni work and experiments and a lab for sally to use for work) but with the new place we will start from the beginning and show how we are doing it, and what we will try to automate. but we have narrowed down a location to around Oberon and the Oberon Plateau, close to family close to services and close enough to Sydney to be easy day trip.

    The ban is on new cars so people can still buy used petrol cars. And most people buy a used car that’s at least 3 years old so that means ppl can still get a recent petrol car for a while. I do think prices will drop on used petrol cars but it would take some time after 2030.
    2030 is a long way away anyway. I think EVs will be a lot more popular then. I think there should be enough supply so that prices won’t go up. If anything prices may go down with the amount of competition amongst car companies

    • @SydneyEV
      @SydneyEV  14 днів тому +1

      agree, even though 2030 seems a long way away, its very close, only 5 yrs, less than 2 lease cycles away now. as most leases are 3 yrs, the second hand boom might last that long at least. but once the flood of ex lease EVs hit the market, and no petrol or diesel can replace them, the collapse in second hand market will happen

    Im happy to have an EV. If the government wants us to have one Im prepared to trade by Subaru XV in a one for one once the government installs the charger for me and provides a flat price EV charging tarriff.

      @@darrenyorston EV charging: You just get your electrician to install a 32A outlet and buy a $500 portable charger with a wall bracket. Then you find an EV retailer offering timed cheap EV charging. Why waiting for the gov to do your homework?

    • @darrenyorston
      @darrenyorston 18 днів тому

      @@moestrei I was being facetious. My meaning was that if the government feels our transition to EV is so critical then they should subsidise the purchase of EVs and the cost of electricity substantially.

    • @SydneyEV
      @SydneyEV  18 днів тому

      some interesting points. you dont really needed a dedicated home charger, jsut a 10 amp power outlet will cover 99% of use cases, (remember you only charge what you drive that day) and there are now EV only plans that allow $0.00 power rate for EV charging at home, and in most cases you can schedule your charging for off peak times so you pay the cheapest rates. if you can or have solar, that reduces even more.

    • @SydneyEV
      @SydneyEV  18 днів тому

      they do have some incentives, like FBT exemptions for EVS on a lease, and you can control your electricity rates somewhat. get them to zero with some investment in home batteries and solar, which you can get rebates for.
      but otherwise, total cost of ownership you will make significant savings, also, its not always about the $$ otherwise everyone would be drivng Kia Picantos. but the best thing is EVs are just far more responsive, smoother and fun to drive with far lower centre of gravity.

      in cooling off period at the moment, but we are happy, we obviously would be happier with a bit more. but market cooling a bit, interest rates not coming down for a while, it is what it is.
