Robs Rapid EV Charger Reviews, Wilcannia NSW
wild vid great to see you make the trip!
I do wish people who advocate for solar power (I'm a big fan and EV owner) would STOP calling it free! It's not. Just because you can afford to install 10kW or so on your roof, and then forget that it cost you about $1k per kW (plus battery if you have one), does not mean that everyone can, and many won't forget the expense. It doesn't do the movement any good
simple payback calculation. in our case, was 5.5 yrs. based on electricity and fuel prices now 7 years ago and commuting 100Km a day as i was. We have had the system for 7 years. so well past the 100% return on investment period. in that time the cost of fuel and home energy has gone up significantly. making the savings even better. not only that, it is an investment in your home that improves cashflow, and the fact we never have a blackout, and i have energy freedom, is priceless. if you look at it this way, obviously the solar panels and infrastructure has a cost, but the energy the system it generates, is free, we dont pay for the sunlight. If you use gas, or fossil fuels, you still have to pay for that infrastructure when the home is built. build a new home, you are paying for that gas connection, you are paying for the upkeep of coal power plants in your bills, and the same for petrol. add in the costs of the raw fuel stock as well, and exposure to the price variability involved with that, you will never have a payback period.
@@SydneyEV My comment still valid. It's not free, it costs, there's a capital cost many people can't afford, or would find hard, and a potential maintenance cost (I was a solar installer for 10 years)
Well done , nothing better than someone who has been there don't that , I wonder if your new place will get the same treatment.
for sure. the new place will be a new build, and we have already started collecting info and quotes for both on grid and complete off grid systems. as of now, it waiting for settlement before we can go further
You did well with OVO. We have over 5kw of Solar inverters (10kw) so they cancelled our plan (NSW). Apparently that’s a thing 😂. I wonder what the State of Health is on your batteries? Ours is 7 years old and it’s degraded by 6%
we have bene looking into off grid and new solar systems for our new build when it gets started, and the export limit seems to be dictated by the energy local provider, as some quote we have have told us we cant have more than 5kw inverters (this also includes in the batteries) which is an issue as we are looking at 30 to 40Kw systems! the provider in our sold home in the video, is Endeavour, and they seem fine with 10Kw inverters we already have as well as the inverters in the powerwalls. As for the battery state of health, i haven't looked into that yet. i know one is only 12 months old as its DC/DC converter failed internally and Tesla replaced it under warranty.
Road user tax on 2 EVs. There go some savings
You think that will only apply to EV? Even with that, still fuel will free. And I make it myself. Proper energy freedom
@@SydneyEV And now check out the rapid devaluation of the Tesla brand... may be worth selling it on.
no point in selling it on, we already paid for it, (6 yrs ag) so why punish ourselves because the company CEO looses his crapola. not buying new makes an impact. even so, elon wasn't a factor in our decision to buy, I'm not going to let him be an influence in what we buy next either. all i will say, is the competition is coming if not already surpassing in many areas, when it comes time to buy new, we will weight up what suits us best regardless of who runs the company. just as everyone else does with every other company they buy from.
@ because it will never be worth more than it s now
'Free energy and fuel' - With the notable exception that the install would have incurred an upfront cost of over AU$40000. Why not just tell the truth? 'Energy and fuel which has all been pre-paid.'!
And here the best part. It has a payback period. When you return on investment hits 100%. Which in our case happened 2 years ago. If burning petrol or gas. There will never be a payback period.
What a rude thing to say! Surely you would have heard he has had the system for 7 years so it has paid itself off and is now operating for free!
@@chrisbridgland7212 Seven years is insufficient to pay off a AU$40,000 install cost unless this guy is using electricity like its going out of fashion! The key to net zero is careful and minimal use of resource, not virtue signalling about how much energy you are able to waste in the space of 7 years, with two electric cars! Disgraceful profligacy, no wonder there's a climate crisis.
@@chrisbridgland7212 yep, love how so many commentors just assume they know exactly how much you paid for it as well.
oh you salty about having to buy fossil fuels constantly? no wonder there's a climate crisis.
I've gone totally off grid 6 months ago, meter removed and all, I am hopeing going EV in the next 12 months, I am running 11kw x 3 phase, 24kw of panels and 84kwh of lifepo4 batteries, it has been running great
Wow. That’s sounds like what we will be doing soon. Depending on cost to connect to grid 150 mtrs away we will be entirely off grid. Needing to power EVs as well as a lot of other electric equipment. Who did your install?
@@SydneyEV Self install, built my own lifepo4 battery banks @ about $3,500 per 16kwh, and just recently installed a aircon in the battery room for 24/7 temp control, I had the grid with solar for 14 years, it was becoming not worth it due to avaiabilty charges and poor FIT. I an only west of the Blue Mountians
very cool but 3500 for 16kwh is a bargain! we have been buying up Samsung rack mounted batteries, have 48Kwh now to use in our new build. by the looks of it we most likely will go off grid, and our new place is near Mt Bindo.
Great educational video. Aspirational for us. Leaking 1890's Queenslander that could be used for wind tunnel testing. Someday though. Hope the move goes effortlessly.
yep, sadly homes in OZ aren't built for efficiency, even new today, while better, still a long way to go. we need to build new, but will include upgraded insulation, and double glazing as a minimum, but its crazy expensive here. if you have heaps of free power, from solar, then the efficiency thing isnt so bad, we used to use the excess to create a thermal battery, just turn on all air cons to really cold/warm. then at sunset, turn them off. house will warm/cool over night. and in most cases would be ok all night. unless it was really cold or hot
@@SydneyEV Everything is crazy expensive in Australia hey! Have a 6kW PV system and using Home Assistant to use excess energy to charge our EV. Works out at about $0.04/kWh to charge accounting for the incredibly low FIT. Using about 30kWh/day during summer with computers and airconditioning running 24/7. So still have a substantial power bill. Can't justify home battery at the moment as we can't install more PVs as our house footprint is too small for any more to be fitted. Again thanks for showing us your home energy setup - or should I say the new owners' energy setup. Keep cranking them out and we'll keep watching!
@@garylovesbeer thanks for watching, i wont be making much content on this old house now, as its no longer our (except electric lawn care stuff as a last vid) but i plan on documenting the new build and setup in the near future.
We stopped using gas about 6 months ago when the last bottle ran out. Still getting around to the heat pump / induction cooker work but part of the house has an old resistive water system so using that for now. A portable $50 induction cooker from kmart works perfectly in the interim! Adding another 13kw solar soon and hopefully bidirectional charging later this year as we have 2 EVs so one will be at home most of the time.
nice, also with some EVs capable of V2L, will help a lot. We used the little single induction cookers for a few months while rebuilding our kitchen, they work surprisingly well and were surprised at what we could cook up on them. highly recommended.
Is the weather station in your garage above the power points an IoT device collecting temperature/humidity data? ua-cam.com/video/YkO4zKlC0Rg/v-deo.html
sadly no, just a cheap decorative thermometer i was given as a gift. in our new place, that will be a IOT device to monitor everything.
I’ve gone full electric and loving it! Thanks for spreading the message.
Thanks for going all electric yourself, better for everyone! and make life so much easier. its a life hack!
someone else in NSW has already taken the number plate F L 1 6 H T ?
not sure, i think the 9 looks better instead of the 6. my old flying school boos had ALT12D.
20 years ago was it house & land selling for about $295,000 in that area, or $295,000 was for the land alone (approx 400m2)? a newish house & land for $295,000 seems quite cheap even back then[?]
yep, Sydney real estate has gone stupid. new blocks far smaller nearby are selling for near $1m
Just curious, did you sell your house at higher than market rate for all the hardware you can't take with you? Also did the buyer appear to be interested in managing their own energy efficiency, or did they just want you to set it so they can forget it? Would sure be a waste of a fully-equipped fully Electric home if the new owners come in, drives 2xDiesel Pickups (I refuse to call them utes), rips out the batteries and panels and reconnects gas to new gas cooktops and hot water... Yes many people have more money than sense.
not sure, haven't met the buyers, but they wanted the Powerwalls to stay, and paid more in negotiations for them, they were not part of the sale contract, and a negotiable item. to get them to come up the the price we wanted, we had to include the wall charger as well. so I am assuming they will already have, or are going to buy an EV soon if they wanted the wall charger. We like automating everything, so its mostly set and forget. the secret is, the oven and cooktop were factory seconds, so were about 60% off new price for small un noticeable damage. the Heat pump we picked up from an auction of a closing down business, and the system was un used still on pallet, just sat in back of the workshop covered in dust, rust stains and grease for a few years and never installed. it cost $400. +500 for our local plumber to install it.
Love my solar, love my PW2, had gas and removed it, full electric kitchen, full battery lawn care been driving and EV since 2019.
nice, i forgot to mention in the vid about all our electric lawn care stuff, lucky we dont have much lawn!
Of course all this wasn't cheap. Imagine the gov would give you an interest free credit which you pay off with what you save.
not exactly sure, i think there are rebates available from batteries in some states, when we installed our system there were no rebates or incentives, so we paid full price, we calculated payback was over 5.5 years based on prices for electricity 7 yrs ago. fortunately, as we had no rebates of incentives, we could remove the powerwalls and take them with us. if they were installed under a rebate program, they would have to stay and be an inclusion on the home contract of sale.
I recently got an induction cooktop (last gas appliance) and I agree it’s so much better than gas. I love it
yep, we love it, its one of those things where once you go induction, you never go back
How do I convince the wife who has used gas all her life......?
Gas is cheaper...
@Humanity101-zp4sqno. It’s not. Do you get gas for free?
@Humanity101-zp4sq $1 a day just for the supply charge isn’t cheaper. And then usage is very expensive. And gas is just going to keep going up a lot
Did you remove the gas meter or go full abolishment? In NSW it can be $1000 for full abolishment
no, we considered that, but also decided that if we were to sell (we did) then its still there for the new owner if they want to use it. the gas plumber just sealed off all the gas pipes from the hot water booster, and external BBQ outlet, the gas line was removed from the kitchen when we got the new circuit done for the induction and over. i think the gas lines are still there, just capped off.
I love the rego number on the Tesla. Stay away from the Bermuda Triangle! 😱
thanks, had the licence plate for a few decades now. it suite my career, and also the car with its performance
I have a 2021 Model 3 which I purchased with FSD when I bought it in late 2020. Elon has stated that he hopes FSD will work on HW3 but it it doesn't they will upgrade the hardware (required by Australian Consumer law as you rightly point out). Last year I transferred the FSD to a new M3 Highland when Tesla had a special offer allowing that (my daughter now has the old car). I'm a ChargeHQ user (but not Amber). I'll be very interested to see how this develops. Regardless it's great to see ChargeHQ survive (will the developers become Amber employees??). I did give Amber a shot a couple of years ago but it didn't quite work for my situation back then. Would be great if Amber+ChargeHQ could, for example, pay you to charge your car when energy costs are negative on sunny days! Currently I have ChargeQ set to charge the car from excess solar but only after our house batteries are full, which works great (especially after
yep, our consumer laws are quite good, also good for Tesla to allow for FSD transfers to new cars, essentially a licence, i think they should do that for all countries that dont have FSD yet. once FSD becomes released in Oz, or wherever, then revert back to the FSD is attached to the car. WE tried Amber a while ago as well, for about 18 months, it was Ok, but we have found OVO works better for our situation. but will be cool to see where Amber can go with ChargeHQ, especially as you mentioned, allowing charging when prices ar negative, or allow you to set a price point to start charging. so can save your solar for export for more profit. so many opportunities.
These lifespan statistics are BS because there are certain engines of certain manufacturers sometimes even year model which were crap or extremely long lasting. It also depends a lot on the owner and driving environment. In Germany for example the winters can be bad, they salt the road and they can drive very fast on certain stretches of the Autobahns. Generally they have high reving small capacity engines because they used to get taxed on engine capacity. Result is cars rarely last over 200.000km and are rusted through after 15 years., some are dead much earlier. We have none of this here in Australia and cars can get 20 years plus and a big Diesel can do 500.000km easily. In EVs we have the Leaf, which claps out on its bad thermal design after 100.000km and on the other side Tesla S and X with 4-600.000km and still going strong. (mine and one in Coffs I know of). To early FSD adopters I can say one thing only: What did you think would happen ??? Smart cars are not so smart anymore: Big battery and average range means bad efficiency. Love the words Companies use the law to protect their profits. You forgot to mention that they bribe politicians to put those laws in for them.
the data was taken from over 27 Million MOT tests in the UK. so im sure the data would capture the outliers you suggested. Being a UK study, it probably wont have much data on high speed, or extreme winter motoring. Also dont forget the MiEV, mine is 15 yrs old, battery has fared MUCH better than a similar age Nissan LEAF, Nissan obviously had issues with thermal management and chemistry, probably more a chemistry thing as the new LEAF has no thermal management either, but seems to have avoided the same degradation issues.
My ford top of line 2012 model $58.000 when new now insurance value $9000 trad in value $2000 car yard $ 10.000 so my new BYD sealion6 is much better value today than the ford back then
The ban is on new cars so people can still buy used petrol cars. And most people buy a used car that’s at least 3 years old so that means ppl can still get a recent petrol car for a while. I do think prices will drop on used petrol cars but it would take some time after 2030. 2030 is a long way away anyway. I think EVs will be a lot more popular then. I think there should be enough supply so that prices won’t go up. If anything prices may go down with the amount of competition amongst car companies
agree, even though 2030 seems a long way away, its very close, only 5 yrs, less than 2 lease cycles away now. as most leases are 3 yrs, the second hand boom might last that long at least. but once the flood of ex lease EVs hit the market, and no petrol or diesel can replace them, the collapse in second hand market will happen
Germany EV sales drop 39% in December France by 20% I think youre backing the wrong horse Net Zero is dead
What's that got to do with Net Zero? good cherries?
God bless you 🙏🦘🚗 God bless Elon Musk 🙏🛸 God bless President Trump 🙏😭
Exciting news about the house! I too have been really despondent lately, so much FUD, the looming federal election, the past US election, in particular Musk making me not want to have anything to do with Tesla or anyone who spruiks the brand. But I just know I love driving my EV and living in my solar powered house.
same here, i still love our Tesla, its still fit for purpose, but Elon, arrgghh... dont care for him at all (we sold our TSLA shares recently its obvious he's not doing much with Tesla and wish he would move on from it to do whatever he wants. but im not going to let his politics influence my experiences and fun driving EVs and renewable adventures
Im happy to have an EV. If the government wants us to have one Im prepared to trade by Subaru XV in a one for one once the government installs the charger for me and provides a flat price EV charging tarriff.
@@darrenyorston EV charging: You just get your electrician to install a 32A outlet and buy a $500 portable charger with a wall bracket. Then you find an EV retailer offering timed cheap EV charging. Why waiting for the gov to do your homework?
@@moestrei I was being facetious. My meaning was that if the government feels our transition to EV is so critical then they should subsidise the purchase of EVs and the cost of electricity substantially.
some interesting points. you dont really needed a dedicated home charger, jsut a 10 amp power outlet will cover 99% of use cases, (remember you only charge what you drive that day) and there are now EV only plans that allow $0.00 power rate for EV charging at home, and in most cases you can schedule your charging for off peak times so you pay the cheapest rates. if you can or have solar, that reduces even more.
they do have some incentives, like FBT exemptions for EVS on a lease, and you can control your electricity rates somewhat. get them to zero with some investment in home batteries and solar, which you can get rebates for. but otherwise, total cost of ownership you will make significant savings, also, its not always about the $$ otherwise everyone would be drivng Kia Picantos. but the best thing is EVs are just far more responsive, smoother and fun to drive with far lower centre of gravity.
EV BS EV ownership of na EV is simply an I.Q. Test! If you bought one, You failed! You would have to be stupid! SH prices, they can't give the rubbish away! This guys is a pure EV fanboy!

Plug in and drop out! That’s me. lol
Inland NSW resident here. Live off-grid for over 20 years on an ever evolving system. My experienes: 1) New solar panels are amazing in price, peak and more importantly low light efficiency and acceptance angle. There is almost no point in getting older 2nd hand panels. 2) You want panels in the East, North and a lot of them in the West, particularly when you have aircon. 3) If you are happy to 'Live a solar life' meaning to adjust your activities to the available sunshine you can get away with a tiny battery, 7kWh LFP in my case. 4) The charge rate of an EV on Type2 can be changed dynamically. This means you can charge directly off solar with a very small buffer battery. In my case I have 12kWp panels (rescued from the tip) and an 8kW inverter (=32A single phase) and a home made Type 2 adapter which adjusts or even stops charging in modifying the PWM Control Pilot signal controlled by the voltage of the buffer battery (To my knowledge such a controller is not commercially available). 5) Here in Australia the power companies will always take the piss out of consumers, the only way to deal with that is to go off-grid.
awesome, we work from home so thinking a grid connection as last resort backup might be good, but most places we are looking at are single phase, so might need a transformer upgrade and some distance of cable installed for 3 phase, we are happy with not exporting anything, export is so low now its not worth it anyway. for the price of the system we have at home now (sold, 9.6Kw with 2 powerwalls 27Kwh) we can now get a 30Kw system and 3 powerwalls! we also have 48kwh of Samsung batteries we plan to use as workshop power, home backup. at this stage it looks like a complete off grid system might be the better option as connection costs alone are more than double urban prices. still dong a lot or research and collecting quotes at the moment, but cant really move ahead until we buy a place.
@SydneyEV The grid is an expensive backup. Chances are there is a black out when you need it or you get a surge from a lightning strike into an overhead power line even far away zapping your gear. You don't need 3 phase, Single phase 32A gives 7.4kW which easily charges an EV.
by the way if did not get close to $920k i be surprised
in cooling off period at the moment, but we are happy, we obviously would be happier with a bit more. but market cooling a bit, interest rates not coming down for a while, it is what it is.

so if planning to do home automation, are you going to have a home server for different things like video content, do you have a desired area to live yet?
suggest a look few old servers to make those home automations work with your power and appliances
yep we already have a large powerful home server and running a lot of automation on home assistant. (its also running my uni work and experiments and a lab for sally to use for work) but with the new place we will start from the beginning and show how we are doing it, and what we will try to automate. but we have narrowed down a location to around Oberon and the Oberon Plateau, close to family close to services and close enough to Sydney to be easy day trip.
Rob is back!
yep! lots more cool stuff to come now!
Excellent - now I know where to go for all my Wang news!
wait, i should start an only fans! Wang news only! maybe not
@@SydneyEV 🤔
I wonder if anyone has started an only fans, that is actually just for fans of a car type?
What else is happening? Crazy amount of new brands and models and a vicious price war. At the same time some new chargers in cities and along the east coast but inland we are stagnant with a single old 50kW Tritium (even in regional centers like Armidale) or going backwards to zero as the NRMA is not repairing vandalized chargers (Walget, Brewarrina, Bourke and Gunnedah is out for months too). People tell me uuh its the long distances but then we only have a handful of highways to electrify. It sucks.
Agree. The situation in Armidale is particularly dire, especially for a seemingly progressive education city. Tesla's Superchargers have been "coming soon" for that it seems like years
not good to hear about the norther mid NSW NRMA chargers not working. not a good sign. i was really hoping a change of government would see more outback and rural Ev charger installs.
I wonder if there is a Barnaby influence in Armidale? though i doubt it. im surprised more NEw England Highway sites haven't been added.
@SydneyEV I know someone living in Armidale and the council is just terrible. Barnaby the wind and solar slayer won't help either.
Sounds like Bathurst region, very strong anti renewables pushes there, and lots of NO WIND FARMS signs etc. but talking to ppl there, it seems the usual small very noisy minority who just dont shut up.
WangWang....another brand where i think it will be LongGone when a warranty claim comes along.
im not so sure, they are BYD. a sub brand of BYD. so i think they will be one of the long term players, most of the strange Chinese brands are subs of larger companies like Geely etc. i really hope they rebrand though if they sell in Australia, and just keep it BYD U9 or something.
Great film, loved it. Thank you!!!!!
so glad you enjoyed it. thank you for watching.
I don't know why people think it's ugly compared to most of the crap I have seen in the last 30years. Real men don't really care what their truck looks like just if it serves it's purpose.
I did everything like you did in the video, hooray, everything worked out, but only for 3 days, and it burned out again, what could be the reason for this?
Hello from my other channel! iMiEV's rock! WTF happened Mitsubishi?
no idea, they had such a good head start! and even after all this time, the batteries have had no issues, a little degradation but nothing as bad as the early LEAF had.
Thank you very much from france, just followed all your steps and found that a blue capacitor exactly where you showed it has popped up. no small card on my car directly 2 blue capacitors ( peugeot ion from 2011). now just have to buy spare part solder capacitor, change fuse and cross fingers !
Great video. Looks like an amazing drive. Do you just have the basic autopilot or the the enhanced one?
we have advanced autopilot with FSD features, so best you can get in Australia without full FSD, so get the traffic light recognition, navigate on AP, smart (sort of awake) summon. unfortunately, until FSD actually gets released in OZ, i cant recommend paying the extra for it at the moment.
Utes are a bit like a Swiss Army knife. They can do a lot of things but nothing really well let alone safe. And like a heavy pocket knive they tend to pull your pants down. 99.9% you drive unloaded on a formed road carrying all that feel good gear with you for nothing. Australia's obsession with (large) utes is bonkers.....there was a time when the Toyota Corolla was the most sold vehicle in Oz....Ex Hilux 4x4 Dual cab Diesel owner here...now with EV (towing 1.85t max) and trailer.
a lot has to do with tax incentives, ABN holder can write off their costs in less time than normal cars, and also, their advertising appealing the to great aussie outdoors manly men men works well. dont need to actually go bush every weekend, just as long as you have the side awning.
well, waymo has logged millions of miles of autonomous driving on public roads, and Tesla has ZERO. but keep dreaming that dear leader will actually deliver on his promises for once... NEXT YEAR! or something....
Im sure we wont see it next year, but the Autopilot system has been collecting driving data for almost a decade so that has to be worth something. im sure they are not just ignoring it all, and will start if a cybercab hits the road. time will tell.
People do not realise how hard it is to get a viable solution going. A prototype is not even 1% of the effort required.
especially when 99% of the prototypes we see never come to market.
Apple pulled out of this pipe dream. How do you drive a car that has no steering wheel into your garage? Your garage is not mapped into the gps map last time I checked.
Foxconn, which is an apple supplier are still pressing ahead with their EV. which i think is odd if apple pulled the plug.
Echo chamber ... Any rational mind should know by now that Musk says a lot of things but rarely delivers on any of them. Musk promised that there will be a million robotaxis on the US roads by 2019 and buying one at 33k would bring a profit of 200k. Five years later and he comes up with a quickly put together "prototype", come one guys, you can figure this out. Those yearly revolutionary announcements that never see the light of day serve a purpose, just one, and you should know what it is.
well yes, all events like this are to build hype, its not a unique tesla thing, but yes, his timelines are very flexible.
Waymo use lidar 😂
seems to be a good mix of options, some using LIDAR, others going with Camera vision (including some big name Chinese manufacturers)
Over promise, under deliver
Well the bus is dumb af. Sure it looks pretty, but who wants to ride inside a coffin? There's a good reason buses have windows - it's to with us having eyes. Aaand...how does one inspect the tyres each morning or change a flat? Waymo has human remote control bunnies for those situations where the AI panics or is otherwise out if its depth. The cybercab is marginally interesting but it'll be decades before legislation would allow such a thing on the roads for real in 'Straya.....and I doubt it'll be Tesla. And even when it is allowed, you need to convince people to trust it. That's gonna be a hard sell for the mainstream.
tyres have remote monitoring, been in use for some time now on heaps of cars, but yes, daily inspections are needed if used by public as public transport, maybe panes removable with quick release fasteners? who knows, But from what i saw, the van did have large windows. I saw another comment about ground clearance, but there are already busses with suspension that adjusts and lower to the road level when passengers are getting on and off. If they make it ll work, great, if Not, hope someone will eventually.
