Thank you for this video! I really struggle with intrusive thoughts about pressing the power button while driving highway speeds, so knowing what will happen is very helpful for calming myself.
made me laugh
The people in this car did not know how to turn off the engine and they're all dead now so you should know this

Grateful for all the positive feedback this video has gotten! Glad it could be of help! I'm curious to know where you guys found the video initially as it had a big spike in views recently. Merry Christmas !
AutoVlog It's on my recommended page, aka the first thing that pops up when I open the YT app
Just showed up in my recommended vids list on the right.
Good job, BTW, and Merry Christmas to you too!
Just to give you a piece of information, the push start button feature was invented by German companies (Mercedes first then VW and BMW), I'm not bashing Ford or anything but they didn't "think" of the safety feature they just copied the whole Push button concept from the German cars whom engineers already though of the safety feature a decade ago.
let my add something else to your database ;), in my VW if the "fly by wire" accelerator got stuck at full throttle all you need to do is brake, the car will detect that you're acceleration and braking for more than 1 sec and it will ignore the the accelerator and you'll brake normal to a stop, they though of this because it way better and more safe to stop the car while it still running because you will still have brake and steering assist.
abd bach Push button start is very old tech Mercedes didn't invent it, nor did VW or BMW. Any time there is a current to anything (in this case, ignition) a switch or button can be used. Aircraft have been using this technology since planes used gasoline engines. The car companies you stated just took it under their wing as a cost saving/marketing trick.
It was on my recommended page as well. Enjoy the spike in views. This was an interesting video.
The push button start feature is just one more thing that can go wrong... BUT, the dealer can fix it ... for about 800 to 1,500 dollars.
Key ignitions also go wrong so whats your point ?
IF you have one and when it goes out ( It will ).. then you'll know my point. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Robert Brunner ... but at the same time it's replacing something that could have a problem I have owned many vehicles that I've had to replace the ignition on before and after chipped keys
Mine went bad in my Mazda Tribute, "START" doesn't work. Very common problem.
I solved that with a $5 button, $1 in wire, and $5 in scotchloks. And I paid too much. :D
I don't know how expensive repairs are to cars with push to start. But I do know defeating an ignition cylinder costs pennies to do and dollars to usable.
Your estimate is way off. The price is $5,000.
I appreciate your time to actually test to see the results when the start button is press intentionally or accidentally. This will come handy in the future. I like your video.
I don't have a Ford but recently got my first keyless start and this was a huge concern. Thank you for putting my mind at ease.

The keyless start is an invention I could've gone without. I've got a Honda Odyssey and the button is about 4-6 inches from the AC button and the stereo power button. I would've preferred it placed where the key ignition has always been, on the side of the steering column so that I don't accidentally hit it out of habit I built up over 25 years with previous cars.
or if they placed a protection like Lamborghini or if they do like Ford
This was the first video I watched on this channel in 2017. After looking at your channel, I subscribed, and now I wait eagerly for uploads. You have amazing content and keep going with what you are doing with your vehicles. Well done, Mike!

I had an old Oldsmobile Starfire that I had to push to start too. It was a real pain in the back if I needed to go
somewhere and I was by myself. It wasn't too bad if I parked it on a hill though. LOL
I remember I had a car that the transmission wouldn't go in reverse. I had to make sure if I pulled into a parking space (like a mall) that it had a slight incline so I could slowly coast back out of the spot. Other than that I would have to push. I remember using that car for the prom. The incline wasn't steep enough. My date (later to become my first wife) steered while I pushed it out the parking spot.

As a first time new owner of a car with push button start I never even gave this a thought. Your point about the override in an emergency is invaluable thanks for doing this...!
Right we all know how to turn it on on but how in the hell do ya turn the damn thing off 👍👍
I agree, no one should even be allowed to get their driver's license without knowing how to turn their engine off while driving in case of emergency in the throttle sticks. There's millions and millions and millions of people who don't even know how to do this, there's a famous example of a family in a Toyota who all unnecessarily died because the format stuck on the gas pedal and they didn't know what to do so they called 911 from the car. Imagine if they were required by law to know how to turn the engine off they would all be alive
i was actually thinking about that...my prayers have been answered! :)
At 3:40, if your throttle becomes stuck, NEVER turn the car off. You lose steering by doing that. Don’t use the e brake either, you’ll just lose all control and flip over. The best thing to do in that situation is jam it into neutral. That way you still have steering control, and you can gradually slow down and pump the break to help.
Prestøn Bøurgeøis I was thinking about that when he said it. But this is an issue that I’ve never had to deal with.
It depends on the situation. Where he was in the video you could do almost anything and even turning off the car. If you are in a busy city traffic situation or very winding road and throttle sticks, you may have serious problems no matter what you do because the car is going to coast for some time before completely stopping. I agree with you, it is nice to know what gets shut off on the car when you do press and hold the start button. Just as long as you don't panic and don't do anything.
I was told if you turn on the left blinker, yet turn right, your car explodes. Can you test that out?

ramivalencia I assumed that too, but when you hear stories about cars shutting off by themselves, you need to know for sure.
nice!!! i always wonder about this now i can sit safe in my car!!! can you do one where you drive than put on reverse??? thanks!!
On some newer vehicles, it requires either a long press (like 2 seconds) or repeated presses (like 2 or 3 presses very quickly) to turn off the car while it's moving above a certain speed (like 5-10 mph or something). At least that is how it is in my 2020 Camry.
You made my day.!

This could've taken 20 seconds.
Hey everyone, what happens when you push the start button on a car while driving?
Nothing.
Thanks for watching.
Pickr Head If you want a quick answer just Google it
I watched the whole thing in hopes of seeing the engine come flying out of the hood in a shower of sparks & flame as well as seeing the driver catapulted into a nearby treetop. But the actual result was a huge disappointment - a ripoff IOW. A "quick answer" isn't what I was after.
He's not doing this video JUST to answer the question. He's doing it to have a comprehensive video that includes discussion on the topic, full demonstration, and relevant explanations. That takes more than 20 seconds. If you want to watch a shitty low quality answer-only video, go watch an Expertvillage or Howcast video.
He’s doing this to make himself a name on UA-cam. All this information is readily available in your owners manual. Anyone that buys a new car and looks to UA-cam to learn how that new car operates is pretty sorry.
My heart was pounding in anticipation... 17 million views I thought there's gotta be an outta control spin or something.

THanks mate. Good review and tells people to think about what they are doing with the dash and proximity to the engine off button.
Actual metal keys are better imo
How so? The turns a switch and has an RF transponder just like the push button start ignition does. The physical key is a little less complicated when it comes to unlocking and locking of the doors but as far as ignition in modern cars there's really not much difference. My wife is slowly getting used to the keyless ignition system on her new car - she hated it at first but being able to keep the "key" in her purse has been a benefit a few times already. One thing is for sure it's a lot easier to grind the teeth on the the fly wheel with a physical key ignition system - if that's your thing ;-)
Scott Warmbier Thank you for your input although I still stand firm. I don't like Keyless Entry or Push Button Start.
Dustin Hart - I get ya - many people think that the system is simpler (key and remote fob) but that's not the case in modern cars. In cars 5-10 years old with "newfangled" keyless systems I'd entirely agree those were unnecessarily complicated and could either be bypassed or weren't reliable - they're much better even a couple years ago. Can they be "hacked" yep - it takes some doing and it would be much easier to tow the car to steal it. If the concern is a physical key for a lock in case the battery goes dead or the fob stops working then most manufacturers include a physical key inside the fob to open the door and the fob can be placed in to a socket to start the car even if the battery on the fob is completely dead. I know I won't convince you - not really trying to - just some food for thought.
Scott Warmbier All I have to say is I've had my old reliable key. I never had any problems with it. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. No need for the key fobs.
People had horse and buggies that worked just fine for transportation too...should we have not moved on to the automobile?
To save you some time: nothing happens.

This actually took a over a 5 minute video?
Brain Storm he has to let us know about his extremely pointless anecdote
Because he has to tell average morons like you to be careful. He is not only teaching you something valuable; he is also talking about precautions and safety that idiots like you should know before you go in the road and do something stupid, you damn ass.
attorney1100 i just wanted to know what would happen if we pushed the button while driving, exactly like the title said, is this an issue? Could have been a 1 minute video instead of 5 minutes. All those safety stuff is not necessary because I'm pretty sure everyone here is just curious on what would happen, and not actually want to try this, so calling someone a moron is kind of pointless here
HeihachiChaolan oh wow maybe you should make this video, you moron.
attorney1100 Stop calling everyone morons and idiots. You don't know what other people do and I'm pretty sure most people have enough common sense not to do this.
don't mess with your phone when on highway
I've thought about this possibility incident but haven't thought of trying this in my own car. Thanks.

Thank you for posting this video! This is info that every push-button start car owner should know!
In much the same way you shut-down a misbehaving computer - press and hold the "power button" and force a hard shutdown - so too, you can shut off a misbehaving automobile.
Too bad the driver of the Lexus sedan (in August of 2009) didn't know this...
As he and his family were traveling north-bound on Hwy.125 (in San Diego county, California), the throttle [apparently] stuck on the Lexus, and he ended up crashing off the end the highway. They traveled for a few miles as the car gained speed (120 mph at the time of the crash), and he was unable to regain control. Had he had the presence of mind (and knowledge) to press and hold the "start" button, the car would have likely shutdown, and he (and his family) would be alive today. During the 911 call, he was asked if he could turn off the car, but he never responded, and apparently the 911 operator did not know to tell him to press & hold the start button. He ended up crashing off the end of Highway 125, where it intersects a surface street, and he and all of the occupants were killed. This was the major incident (one of several that followed) that prompted Toyota's throttle-pedal recall.
Your car is a computer. If it ain't behaving, press and hold the power button!
thanks for useful information. really appreciate
You're welcome !

Actually it was a really great video about the keyless go! Awesome video! Thanks!

Thank you. I always wondered about this also but were afraid to try.
Interesting stuff! I'm glad I came across this channel
That push button start is moronic change solely for the sake of change.
Still driving an old car i presume. Try it. You wont want it any other way.
I have, with rental cars and hated it. Also, Just wait until the $2 battery goes dead or you leave the thing in your pants in the washing machine,, you'll wish you have a steel key that lasts the life of the car.
Robin Sattahip Steel keys dont last the life of the car. They wear and lose their functionality. the same goes for the tumblers. thats why many old cars can be opened with just about any key or flat object that fits.
I have extra batteries. My key fob has an actual key hidden inside of it. Most cars have a port you can put the fob in so the battery isnt relevant, and im not a child, i always check my pockets before throwing them in the washer.
You hated not having to take the key out of your pocket? Im struggling to believe you. We have 6 cars at the moment, and only one takes an actual key and its currently for sale. What car guys gives a shit about the key? Im focused on power, traction, and car audio.
Robin Sattahip I love it. easy, quick....the doors unlock when I grab the handle....
all too convenient.
Things need to change for us to advance. Ask anyone if they want carburetors, distributors, manual locks or roll up windows back. Adapt and embrace change, its what keeps making things better.
BUT WHAT ABOUT THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION OF ALL!!! Is it possible to restart the vehicle at highway speeds without stopping and putting transmission in park?
Put it in neutral :)
AutoVlog Ok cool. That's what I was hoping you'd say. Thx
Yup, park/neutral switch to ignition is what would cease a start. So either park or neutral :)
Did you actually check/confirm that it will respond like a normal key if you need to restart engine while moving? I.E Move transmission to neutral, restart engine, move transmission back into drive. Just wondering because you didn't mention starting the vehicle in neutral in the video. I know a lot of these cars with electronic start, and electronic transmissions give you the warning 'vehicle must be in park' if you try to start the engine with it out of park. I was just curious if it would actually even start in neutral (like a normal car would), or if these electronics limit you to only starting in park
just use manual
I've always thought about this but I never actually tried it, glad I got confirmation im good to do it now
That question had also been going through my mind sometime back ,now I know thanks 👍
no one will try this at "home" :)
TechTom LOLL
TechTom yeah you try this outside
Xx_Theboss4life_xX 4ever yeah - that may be a good idea :)
I tried this at home and wrecked my table and recliner trying to get up to normal speed
TechTom i did and wrecked
If you're ever in a situation where the throttle gets stuck, just put the transmission in NEUTRAL. What's so hard about that? Once you get the car under control and stopped, then shut off the engine. Don't try to just turn off the engine while the car is still moving because you'll lose hydraulics and will have no power brakes. Also, if you have a regular ignition switch with a key, you might turn it too far and lock the steering wheel...then you'll REALLY be screwed.
If your accelerator is stuck and you put it in N, you'll be out an engine! I see it now 7rpm/8rpm/9rpm BOOM 💥 That'll be $2500 plus labor please. You can still drive with the engine off. It's hard to navigate through cones without PS but you can easily maneuver to the curb without PS. A lot of people don't know that you can turn it back one click and not lock the steering, or that you can turn it back to start without starting the engine, and that scares me. That one little area could mean the difference between life and death.
I was driving around inside my living room when I got notified about this video, thanks for the disclaimer.

LMAOOOOO
I have played around with that same function in my 2015 and my 2018 Ford Escapes. Yes, both of these DID shut down when holding the button in for 3-5 seconds at higher speeds. I know one problem with the Ford vehicles, not sure about all other vehicles, but the power steering ONLY works when the car is running AND the key is in the normal "RUN" mode. The steering will NOT function during Remote start function. It is an electric steering module and it VERY difficult to turn when the steering motor is not running. I didn't check that when the key was shut down while driving. Great video to share with everyone!
very informative....never thought about this earlier...thanks

i always wondered what would happen if you toss the "fob key" out of the window while driving
Paul Walters nothing would happen if you toss out the key fob while moving! but if you stop the vehicle and push stop then try to restart, it won't start!
Mentu Hotep ahhh, makes sense
Paul Walters it would just tell you the key was gone
The car would continue to drive until you stopped and put it in park. And you would not be able to lock it or get it to drive again.
I know because I've tried what you mentioned
If you toss the key out the window, it must mean you hate your car /life or both.

wth.
I've always checked or changed my own fluids in every car I've owned.
I've always wanted to know, glad I found this.
didn't know about the holding of the button - hopefully, I will never need it but good to know! Great Video.
Shouldnt be playing with your phone while driving anyway
***** Welcome, son.
Never thought about this but I'm glad you did. Thanks.
