    Is there a way where I can just use one HDMI cable from my video card to the Elgato HD60 X and then just the USB cable into a USB 3.0 port on my computer? So the USB cable carries the signal into OBS Studio so I don't have to use passthrough?

    • @KevinMuldoon
      @KevinMuldoon  Рік тому +2

      You only need to use passthrough through when connected to games consoles, or a second PC, and you want to see what is being recorded.

    My full review of the Elgato HD60 X came nearly two years after I bought it, but I've finally published it at ua-cam.com/video/thX4V_hhO1c/v-deo.htmlsi=peVHmqo1hXqzeM2l

      There's two things that you need to consider with game capture devices. The passthrough frame rate and resolution and the recording frame rate and resolution.
      As per help.elgato.com/hc/en-us/articles/5293216945805-Elgato-Game-Capture-HD60-X-Technical-Specifications and help.elgato.com/hc/en-us/articles/5293283235469-Elgato-Game-Capture-HD60-X-Supported-Resolutions , the HD X allows you to record at 2160p30, 1440p60, 1080p60 HDR, 1080p30, 1080i, 720p60, 576p, 480p (it can do more than that but that is the official list).
      You can passthrough 1440p and 1080p at 120fps. So you'd have no issues playing at that frame rate.
      Be aware that the 4K X is the newer capture device and is better suited to the PS5 and Xbox Series X.
      There's full reviews of the HD X, 4K X and 4K Pro, on my channel 👍

      The game capture card is designed to capture what is being passed through HDMI. You ideally want to connect a mic to the computer that is recording.
      The HD60 X supports recording game chat via the 3.5mm audio port too (using an accessory that can be purchased separately).

    • @KevinMuldoon
      @KevinMuldoon  4 місяці тому +1

      The official sales page has recommended requirements for using the capture card.
      The capture card itself doesn't need much to work and could work with even basic laptops.
      The real factor will be what you are recording, what bit rate, resolution and frame rate you are recording at. That will influence your laptop purchase more. 👍

    • @KevinMuldoon
      @KevinMuldoon  7 місяців тому

      Hey Jordan.
      You ideally want an 6 or 8 core computer, or higher. It all comes down to what you're recording.
      Even a cheap laptop can handle OBS recording at low resolutions. Going from 720p to 1080p recording requires more CPU and GPU power. Going to 1440 or 4K requires more power. Increasing frame rate and bit rates (quality) all require more power.
      It's not something I actively monitor myself as my desktop PC handles OBS with ease. With my old laptop, I do need to reduce my resolution and quality.

      @KevinMuldoon  5 місяців тому +1

      The original USB cable should work fine.
      I'd try recording from another source, such as a video games console or other camera. That will help you rule out the capture card being the issue.
      If the capture card is recording footage correctly, it's probably your camera settings.

    • @KevinMuldoon

    Can i use elgato for live straming in low end pc

    • @KevinMuldoon
      @KevinMuldoon  11 місяців тому +1

      Hi SeeganPaul.
      I guess it depends on what you classify as a low end pc.
      As far as using elgato capture cards, you can use them with very basic computers. However, it's the recording software and recording format that will determine how powerful a PC you need.
      For example, if you have an extremely low end PC, you could still use OBS or Elgato's recording software to record or stream at 480p or possibly even 720p. If you want to move from 24/25/30 FPS to 60 FPS, you'll need more resources. If you want to move up to 1080p, you'll need more resources. And again if you move up to 1440p or 4K.
      When you encode using an application like OBS, you can the GPU to handle a lot of the encoding. The CPU still does a lot of work though.

      I did tests in the past, but need to do more OBS tests to determine whether there are any issues.

    • @KevinMuldoon
      @KevinMuldoon  Рік тому +1

      One thing to add.
      If you do a 1440/60 test again, open up task manager and check CPU, memory and GPU usage.
      Dropped frames could suggest that you're bottlenecking somewhere (it's usually the CPU).
      My main PC can easily stream most resolutions, whilst my laptop would probably top out at 720p as it has a ULV CPU .

      In my last trip there, they downgraded 3 out of the 4 items so I sold them on eBay instead. Every item was in absolute mint condition with all original packaging and plastic bags etc. They told me something had to be like new, not used. I queried how that is possible when something is used.
      Similar issue when buying. Spent over a grand on a camera and the sensor was exposed and dirty (which can cost £50 to £150 to get cleaned professionally). They said it was still a grade. Then the next camera arrived with cables and other items missing...they still said it was A.

      There's so many factors to consider when choosing a laptop such as budget, display, performance, noise, ports etc.
      It also depends on your recording setup. I connect multiple Elgato capture devices so I use a desktop PC.
      A key thing to understand is bandwidth. Video capture devices tend to use a lot of bandwidth, which can create problems when connecting other cameras and devices.
      If you're only connecting the Elgato and a webcam, a good octocore windows laptop with many USB ports would be good.
