  • In this video we discuss how to harvest Solomon's Seal Root...W/O a trowel! Why without a trowel?? Well, Solomon's Seal has a long, delicate root for one, and two is it so shallow that you almost don't need one.
Solomon's Seal is rather common in the Eastern United States and is used medically all over the world. The plant dates back to antiquity and reports have it that King Solomon used it himself!?!?

It's pretty cool how every one of those seals on that root will tell you how many years old the plant is.

It is really cool. It also makes harvesting kind of like a treasure hunt because you never know how many seals you're going to find. Thanks for sharing!!

Please take a look at this youtube video, this guy harvest it even better because he doesn't damage the plant it self so it can grow again .

How can it grow again when the roots are taken or do you leave some in on purpose? I fear people will just dig the whole root out. Maybe it can regrow from seeds that fell prior root digging?

It can grow from it's root and from seeds. These plants will produce berries that contain seeds and each berry has 5 - 10 seeds in my experience. Each plant can produce 15 - 30 berries, so they drop a lot of seeds.
The root will heal itself, albeit a touch slowly, then it will continue it's slow growth process. The plant grows slow naturally so one has to be careful of over harvest and spread out your harvesting to ones from different areas.

I have a ton of Solomon seal growing in my flowerbed. It is much taller and grows in a large cluster though. Would I be able to harvest it the same or is there a different variety between flowerbeds and forest?

There's several species of Solomon's Seal. Some are small like this one, others get large, like Giant Solomon's Seal can get up to 5 - 6 feet. If the soil is loose enough and depending upon the size of the plant, this method could work for harvesting but it would be best just to find the root. The roots can get quite large and long, especially if they have been growing a while. After finding the root, a shovel or a trowel might be better depending upon the size of course. You'll have to determine based on what you see once finding the root. Just remember that Solomon's Seal is a slow growing plant and is native so don't over harvest.
Hope this helps and good luck!

I have a thick patch of these in my yard. There are dozens & dozens of berries (poisonous) which are all black now. If I drop the berries into the dirt where I took roots, do you think they'll grow?
I really want to get some of this root and dry it. I've allowed this patch to increase for several years and now I think it's time. Thanks for the video showing the shallowness and appearance of these roots.

The berries contain the seeds so it should grow, however this plant is very slow growing. It can take 10 or more years for a good sized root. Each "Seal" on the root represents one year of growth, just an FYI!

@@TrilliumWildEdibles Thank you! The stalks of this patch are all at least 3 feet long, bending in graceful arcs down to the ground with the weight of their berries, with about 20+ leaves per stalk, they are mature. My only fear is that digging there will kill them ALL (well taking out the root CERTAINLY will kill that plant - duh).
This year, I allowed about 4 young plants to grow elsewhere in my lawn without mowing them down, I will mulch those with shredded leaves as a back up. I have mowed those in the past and they came back!!
Anyway, the mature patch sprang up many years ago among some hostas. (I don't care if i kill the hostas, haha, I have plenty more of them.) I live in southern Wisconsin and have always known these to be 'rare' desirable wild woodland plants, as opposed to invasive weeds. Now I know WHY.

@@TrilliumWildEdibles What? It takes 10yrs for it grow up enough to get one seal?

You should always leave behind enough of root for it to regrow. If we all gonna start going to harvest it not much will be left. And you always have to harvest in places where it is abandon.

Pro harvesting.. I need to find this plant and try this still. Definitely looks like an awesome plant to harvest. They say King Solomon was the wisest man that ever lived. I wonder if one of the medicinal effects of this plant is wisdom!?

Thanks Daniel, I have ruined so many Solomon Seal plants before I could gather them this way. It is a tasty plant and I need to do a video on using it for food and medicine. It wouldn't surprise me if he was, as Solomon was very wise man that's for sure!! We are still learning about him and his message to humanity.

Yessss, please do another video about Solomon's seal if you get a chance! I would absolutely love that! I am very interested in this plant! I would love to learn from you how you use it as food and medicine! Seems like every time I have some question in my life I find the answer in Solomon's books called Proverbs or Ecclesiastes which are both in the Bible.

This video isn't to show that a trowel is worse, it's just to show that it is possible without one. Some species of Solomon's Seal require a shovel, some require a trowel, and others are easy enough barehanded. Hope this helps distinguish why I did it this way.
