Learn how to disassemble, clean, function check, use muzzle discipline, trigger pull/reset, breathing, using safety, keeping finger off the trigger until you're ready to shoot and other disciplines before buying ammo and taking it to the range and zeroing your sights/optic. Then buy more ammo and become accurate with it.
Those other disciplines would be the 4 firearm safety rules.. which should be burnt into brain before even touching a rifle.
Or pistol.
Or shotgun.
Or anything that goes boom.

Start with a basic gun if you’re just starting.
A sling, irons, optic if you can afford it and ammo.
Go get training before buying all the crap.
You find what you actually need after attending a class.
Freedoms_glory This is all important, but nothing beats practice after you have had some good training. Too many buy a gun, spend hundreds or thousands on accessories, hundreds more on training and then don’t buy ammo and practice. I personally suggest that other than getting basic training in firearm operation and safety, buy 1,000 rounds and shoot them before spending a lot more on accessories or training in tactics and such. Get familiar with your firearm and get it thoroughly broken in and then begin the major investments in training and toys.
I'd have to say the priorities for hardware, after learning firearm safety rules are:
1) of course a rifle
2) sling
3) mounted light.
And optics only if the rifle didn't come with irons. But will want to get backup irons eventually.. and learning to shoot a rifle with an optic before irons is a lot like learning to drive a car with an automatic transmission then trying to go back and learn manual. Irons kinda force shooting fundamentals.. plus they always work (unless buy some cheap China crap that breaks off the rifle)

I wasn’t saying “basic” training but a carbine one course.
Any instructor worth their salt can take a beginner and move them into the area of understanding their weapon platform.
It should never be about stopping at just safe handling, but understand and application of a platform regardless if it’s a rifle, pistol or whatever.
Robert F safe handling is an obvious start for any firearm. Or any dangerous equipment for that matter.
Most people already have a rifle and are looking to deck it out in everything they think looks cool.
That’s before they even know if it can function past it’s first 100rds.
If you haven’t bought a gun yet there’s plenty of videos, comments, blogs, Reddit posts ects for those people, they haven’t made their poor decisions yet.
As for someone that already has a carbine and are looking for gear to throw on their AR, get a sling, sights(like you said irons) and attended a carbine one course.
You’ll learn more about what you do and don’t need by attending a handling course rather then buying crap you don’t need and never learning how to use it.

I use a Yanke Hills Machine miny 3 rail front sight mount for up to 3 lights. This is the best in the business.

I'm shocked that Magpul doesn't make a free float handguard. I know they focus on plastic parts but they are the people that made MLOK. I'm sure it would sell well.
Maybe because there are so many Free Float handguards already on the market that are pretty cheap, but the only barrier for some is the required tools to fit one on. Magpul mainly focuses on "easy to put together" parts that require little to no tools.
Safety! Safety! Safety! Always look down the chamber from the rear and check for clear.
Leaning how to properly service your rifle and having the tools necessary to do so on hand is almost as important a skill to learn as it is to learn firearm safety. Knowing how to attach accessories, replace parts, or build an AR15 is something everyone should learn how to do without having to hand the firearm off to a gunsmith.
A supesser is a must to.

Great info here but I have above average knowledge and I still had a difficult tie following at times a little slower and they also would have picked up on the sale pitches
Of course there's a little bit of sales pitch.. it's Magpul.
And Magpul makes no junk.
So as an owner of this platform for 16 years and an operator of this platform for 20 years (my M16A2 service rifle wasn't technically mine lol).. I do not at all mind that a damn good company included a little bit of not at all over the top, nowhere near the top, sales pitch while putting out some great info.
Although I'd sightly disagree with him on hardware priorities. Sling is a given for any rifle. Most rifles come with irons.. if it didn't get some irons.. then get a light mounted. And if it only came with one mag definitely need additional mags... Two at absolute minimum (assuming the standard capacity of 30rds isn't outlawed wherever the reader happens to be, whomever the reader happens to be).
Fancy optics and furniture will do zero good if can't see to defend self or family.
Oh and one more thing about that light.. need to be able to turn it on by holding down a button and off by letting that button go. Pressure pad works great for this. Because yes shining a light does tell the whole neighborhood, not just your attacker, where you're at. So the last thing you want is to leave the light on 100% of the time

im building my first AR, i dont have my upper assembly yet as its still being built, but i already have my lower, sig romeo5, front flip up sight and a bipod ready to throw on it when it arrives. debating on a angled magpul foregrip as well.. if i catch the bug, i plan on building a 308 next so i can dive into the scope world

I'd say get familiar with the platform before adding bipod and other specialized stuff.
There's 4 things you need, other than the rifle itself:
Learn then Eat sleep breathe the firearm safety rules every day. Learn disassembly, cleaning, reassembly. Learn the function of the platform how it works. Do not even think about opening any ammo boxes before you've done ALL of this. And if you somehow already have .223 / 5.56 in mags unload that shit right now and put it away. Then learn the things mentioned.
Now the 3 basics aside from the rifle:
Sighting system (if it came with irons use those. If this rifle has even a remote chance of being used in home defense you will want the option of a larger rear aperture.
Mounted light with momentary on.. pressure pad facilitates momentary on quite wonderfully.
Sling.
And of course after learning firearm safety rules, principles of operation, maintenance, clearing malfunctions... You'll need to operate your rifle at a range. If you live in the city or even sort of City.. do not go in your yard to do this. If you're way out on the country and have a sizeable piece of land or a buddy that has such.. it's possible to set up a range with every safety consideration accounted for. When I lived in Tennessee, I'd go down in the bottom of a gulch in the middle-ish of 10+ acres.. naturally occurring backstop to catch the fired rounds.
Part of operating the rifle at a safe range will be getting sights zeroed. Entirely about implementing firearm safety rules. And should a malfunction happen you'll already know what to do depending on which type of malfunction.

@@Cheeseypoofs85 you may not be new but there is likely a lot that are. I couldn't respond with the assumption that you at least already know the four firearm safety rules, plus there's probably going to be a lot that read all these comments.
At any rate there is good AR specific info there for any first AR, regardless if new to firearms or not.

I doubt you're purchasing an M4 anywhere considering that is the military version with a three round/full auto select fire, if you're talking about a rifle with a barrel less than 16" than you mean an AR pistol or SBR'd AR.
I have a round steel hand guard and can't attach anything to it! I love it like it is. I have a Trijicon red dot and iron sights installed by a Navy Seal. It is dead on at 75 yards!!! Love it!!!
Needs a light mounted and I'd be wondering if the person that claimed to be a seal was actually a seal of they didn't even suggest a mounted light with pressure pad for momentary on

Also educate your self on local and federal laws so that you abide by them. This will save you a headache down the road.

You can build way nicer AR15s than the complete ones at gun shops. And for a cheaper price sometimes.
Depends, oftentimes tools and time make up for that price difference, not to mention actual assembly can be fucked up
Why isnt part 2 training? Cant do much w an upgraded gun if u cant shoot it properly. Especially since u wasted money on upgrades instead of range ammo.
Shaquille Cress totally agree. Me personally, i wouldnt even consider an optic an “upgrade” since it kinda is a must have. Maybe even a trigger too but thats about it. Things like new barrel or receivers or stock and stuff like that is kinda of secondary in my eyes. Training first then upgrades

Why not also mention the handguards that have mlok on them that are longer than the rifle length handguards you provide? Personally I like 15" long handguards to put lights and a bipod further up and closer to the muzzle. And, picatinny rails on the 12 o'clock position makes mounting NV devices, buis, lasers, pressure pads, etc easier

New gun owners need ammo, magazines and training. Im tired of getting flagged at my local range! Please take the time to educate yourself on firearm safety before you hurt someone or yourself! Shoot your gun, get familiar with it then decide to change things.

Firearm safety rules burnt into brain first. Before even having rifle and ammo in the same room OR vehicle.
The order in which we say these things matters a hell of a lot.
& The bare essentials for a defensive rifle include irons, mounted light with momentary on (ideally via pressure pad), and a sling.
And absolutely do train. But there's lots to do before shooting. Learn how the rifle functions. Disassembly cleaning reassembly. How to clear malfunctions (that range safety officer won't be at home to clear a malfunction if things go bump in the night). How to line up iron sights.
If a friend who's new to firearms bought an ar15 I'd even have them do the dime dry fire exercise to learn a good trigger pull.
A lot like a car.. this is not just hop in and away we go. There's things to learn and commit to memory before actually operating the tool.. be it a car or a rifle.

First thing you want o upgrade to or "accessorize" is iron sites (if your rifle didnt come with them; let's say they did. First thing you want is a sling. Second is a flashlight. Then move to your fancy optics, handguard, stock, and grip. Unless you're mounting your flashlight and sling to the handguard then do the handguard AT THE SAME TIME. If you're crunched for money, sling first, flashlight second. A fighting/defense rifle doesnt NEED anything else.

All the add-ons and gadgets for ARs are for the would-be Rambos of the world. A basic AR with iron sights is more than sufficient for protecting one's self at ranges up to 400 meters. That is how far trainees shoot at targets at Army rifle ranges.

Idk about 400 meters.. we shot 50 to 300 meters in 2001 to 2009, US Army, 25 ID (L).
But I did do it with irons on a rifle length platform (M16A2) and I can say irons absolutely are good out to at least 300 for point shoot (not area shoot) accuracy.
And yes I did say 25th Infantry Division (Light), and M16A2. my MOS was wheeled vehicle mechanic but I happened to take marksmanship quite seriously. As well as mortar attacks in Afghanistan. And NBC as well as any training or application of training that had anything to do with combat... basically I picked the wrong damn job.
AFTER learning firearm safety rules, how the ArmaLite platform functions, how to clear the platform, how to disassemble the platform clean it and reassemble it, how to clear different malfunctions...
Then it's time to touch a rifle.
And all that's really needed is iron sights with large rear aperture available, a mounted light with momentary on, and a sling.
Plus of course a magazine (ideally more than one), and brain already having firearm safety rules burnt into it, as well as the rest mentioned before touching a rifle.
Bullshit I carried the m16 a1 for 4 years in the Marine Corps. They qualify with acogs now. There is no way iron sights are better than up to date proper optics. You can beat a red dot for up close . And a good scope or magnifier for longer range.
So this is an ad to give them your money....

Instead of this ending up being a video on the basics of perhaps how to use your first AR-15 it seems more of a sales pitch on everything you guys have to offer people that's sad

Gotta say, videos like this do nothing for your brand - in fact, they detract from it.
As explained in Part 1, this is a video targeted towards new gun owners who bought their first rifle due to the current pandemic. It had to be shot from the company owner's home shop because getting the message out now is more important than holding out for the sake production quality.
Like Part 1, this video is concise and helpful to a new gun owner looking for help, which in turn advances the cause of the 2A community, something no one can say about your useless, asinine comment.
Ras Ro I agree. This video of a magpul employee in a messy back room doesn’t help the professional brand image of magpul.
The guy keeps pushing lights on weapons, which probably has to be the worst idea ever. (He actually says "target i.d.," meaning he advocates pointing your weapon at people you don't recognize.) He also pushes slings, which are only necessary if you're carrying the weapon hundreds of yards. And of course, he pushes owning ten magazines, while troops in actual combat carry only seven. (As a homeowner, you really only need one. Maybe have a second, just in case, but that's it.) It's all Gucci, spend-spend-spend consumerism, spread by someone who knows only how to ring up sales.
