Not to brag, I used this video to put together my first stripped lower with only 1 parts kit and managed to not lose a spring or detent! I had to find it a few times but it wasn’t lost!
Also the Aero Precision video on this one thing says to clip the spring so that 1/4" (or 3-4 twists) stick out of the lower, then put in the screw. It went a lot easier when I did that.
@1stShotTactical I went ahead and bought a complete lower from a local gunsmith friend, but I think I'll build my 2nd AR using your video along the way. Thanks.
this has been really helpful for me, I've never had an AR before and decided to build my own after finding a deal on a full upper assembly. Thanks for putting this series together
Awesome video!! My friend purchased a brand new upper and lower and was telling me that they’re extremely tight. When putting them together. He’s worried about it but I told him not to worry!
Aero says to cut the rear spring before adding the set screw. Made it a bit easier for me. Only had to chase and find the spring once before I cut it 😂. Thanks for the video!
For anyone frustrated with the front takedown pin buy yourself a Clevis pin that is the same diameter. A clevis pin has holes in it that allow you to press in the spring and detent with a small punch or pin and slide. It keeps the detent down while you slide in the takedown pin straight behind the clevis pin. Works great and is super fast
A buddy of mine got me a lower and a kit for my first build. I'm only about half way since the kit is missing a detent & a roll catch. Other then that I'm having fun. I used some clear tape keep the detent pin in place while staying flexible enough to just smoosh it with the bolt thinggie. LoL. Either way it work like a charm for me. Awesome tutorial! It's loads of help. Thanks!
Great video, clear step by step, many thanks! 2 suggestions: I managed to lose BOTH of my takeout detent pins as they went flying off to... wherever. Managed to get replacements pretty quickly and decided not to be stupid again, so got a large box, lined it with a towel, pointed the detent and spring INTO the box as I put it in. Caught the first one before I finally managed to get it in place. Also used the credit card trick one of your other viewers mentioned below. Other suggestion: YT is gonna nab you for "how to assemble a rifle" vids. Strongly suggest you duplicate over on that competitive channel.
My lower is also aero precision. So I really appreciate you mentioning the parts that Aero specifically makes. As they were not in my kit 😂. Great video.
For anyone doing this for the first time, here’s my advice: buy at least one extra Aero parts/“Fix-It” kits. Once that front detent goes flying you aren’t getting it back.
I never did an Aero Precision build but you have made me a fan of their lowers with the threaded bolt catch and rear detent....that was very innovative of them. Had to subscribe too. Great video.
At 9:42, if you have trouble pushing out the rear takedown after install, Aero Precision instructs to cut a few coils off the spring with a cable cutter. Leave it full length if you don't have a 4-40 set screw and this gets captured by the buffer lock plate
So the 4-40 set screw isn’t required? I’m going to use a mil spec parts kit to assemble an aero lower and wanted to make sure I didn’t need that before starting in on it.
@@stuarthiggerson5846 Late comment here, but no it's not required. You can get them for super cheap though. It's just a 4-40 1/8" set screw so anything that size would work. @1stShotTactical That comment should probably be pinned lol
Thank you for the step by step instructions! I put together my first lower, and only lost one spring and one detent in the process. It took me about ten times as long though. 😂
5:34 I use a 1/4" clevis pin. It looks just like a takedown pin but it has holes in it. You feed your spring and detent through the hole, press it in with your Allen wrench and turn it until it's locked. Set the takedown pin flush against the clevis pin and push it through. Super easy.
Patience is key. I lost my first detent. I found a 1/4 drill bit works perfectly, similarly to what he used the screw driver for(the chuck end of the bit not the drill tip). Transferring from the drill bit, that holds down the detent, to the takedown pin was super easy.
I've been using an old pin to slide in from the left with the rounded side to the detent, then just slide the new on in, with the groove to the detent ,from the right. No special tool. Works for the back as well.
I always get the detent in with my finger then hold it down with a credit card card. Slide the pivot pin in over top of it, then pull the credit card out. Works like a charm.
I thought that to be able to use the rear take down detent spring with the little screw, that you have to clip off a little of the spring so it doesn't bottom out? Also maybe blue lock tight on it as well. Just asking before I launch mine across the room...lol
Do yourself a favor on the rear takedown and trim the length of the set screw off of the spring. They give you a milspec length spring and if you don't trim it down it puts to much pressure on the detent. I believe it's about 6 coils
Very nice video - helped a lot with starting my first build - this morning ! Lol. Thumbs up and subbed. Nother tip, I used a spark plug gap tool on detent, similar to the credit card tip below - used the .025 fin to hold the detent down with one hand while pushing the pin through with the other, then just slide out the gap fin (receiver upside down in vise made it a lot easier though)
Could you tell us if that color is a specific build kit, any special name, etc. I can't find it on their site, and customer service didn't recognize the description. Thanks for a great video!
I just watched this video. I’ve finally made up my mind on getting an Aero lower and upper. The 2 seem like super quality parts. Thanks for making this video, I’m gonna keep it in my history to view again when I build my own! Keep the great vids coming!
1/4 x 2” clevis pin - about $2 at Tractor Supply. Get the one that has holes all the way down the pin. Push the clevis pin into the pivot pin hole from the left side of the lower. Align the hole in the end of the clevis pin with the pivot pin spring/detent hole. Drop your spring and detent pin through the clevis pin & into the hole in the lower. Push the detent pin in with a punch/hex key & rotate the clevis pin 90 degrees. This will hold the detent in place. Now you can perform the “switch-a-roo” maneuver as described in the video.
Thanks for the detailed videos. I'm getting ready to build an Aero stripped lower and will be following your video tutorial. Should I be lubricating any of the parts or springs before install? Thanks
I had a different brand lower that had the screw in mag catch. I ran in to a problem that the release would move just enough that it wouldn't catch the bolt. the pin was a hair narrow allowing slight wiggle. does the aero catch compensate for this? will it hold open on plastic mags?

You can install any lower parts kit! Using the aero precision lower parts kit does make it easier to do the bolt release and rear take down pin bc they have threaded pieces👍
Just a PSA, Aero actually recommends cutting the takedown pin's detent spring down a bit because the set screw takes up some of the space inside the channel that would've otherwise been occupied by the spring.

You just have to “smoosh” it in with the rear retainer plate when you install the buffer tube!🙌
It would have been nice to point out which side of each detent needs to drop in, even if both sides are symmetric, like he did for the safety switch, great video tho
My first build was an Aero Ar15 a few years ago.. I don't recall that lower having the Allen screw for the bolt catch like the m4e1 does. Same for the rear takedown. The m4e1 is definitely a better lower.
simple, detailed, to the point. thank you
