20 year old and progger as well. i discovered them not too long ago but i always come back to watch this performance. i highly recommend listening to black noise and journey! also nash the slash’s solo stuff is amazing! wolf is a masterpiece
I'm a 66 year old guy from Toronto. I'm just catching up myself. They seem to have gone through some changes. They did stuff like this but they also did standard 70s rock/pop (radio hit songs like "Just Like You"). Nash the Slash was well known in Toronto in the 1980s but I never saw a show. I'm going to check out more of these guys (I owe it to them after more than forty years). Nash the Slash R.I.P..
The program was Night Music, originally hosted by Reiner Schwartz. It appeared Friday nights - I can’t recall the time. It was a terrific program with alternative, progressive and avant garde music. I miss it and my teen years.
I'm 58 years old they were my first concert I saw them open for rush at varsity stadium in toronto I never heard of them before but man they blew my mind I still look up black noise once in a while I love that album oh yeah I saw them in 1979 I was 15 smoked some weed and will never forget it a great memory
Wow. How interesting,, I seen rush 76/77 New Year's eve maple leaf gardens,, smoking Columbia gold . Lol 2112 return tour , Getty lee did the count down into the new year . Overwhelmed.. Cheers from Vietnam
I saw him with Breathless, I saw him with FM, I saw him solo, I saw him more than 100 times. We became friends...I'm heartbroken that my friend is dead. He was light years ahead of his time. Rest in peace Jeff.
These guys changed rock going in to the 80's. Rush and Triumph moved to keyboard oriented music and add SAGA as a huge part of this. Prog rock in Canada was set!
I'm still a working musician (with the exception of the pandemic restrictions shutting down music venues), so being able to play a few instruments, and with most of my friends being musicians, it's made life not only bearable, but enjoyable. Rock on!
Set your Phasors on Stun, good people, Nash the Slash is dead. Please remember the many, many innovations he contributed to the Canadian music scene, and continue on your own journeys of exploration with his unique example to guide you.
A pioneer in electronic music. When your admired by Gary Numan you know you've done something right. I listened to Nash and FM as a kid, I saw Nash in concert at Club Cosmo in Moncton, NB. I feel very privileged to have seem him. He will be missed. RIP Jeff Plewman, RIP Nash The Slash.
Oh the memories... I was in my first year at Carlelton U... In my room, tuned into channel 24 TV Ontario on my 12" black&white one evening and this came on... Was blown away... still am.
Probably the best song ever written and performed. This song was so ahead of its time! I have the original LP signed by the members of the band. True art this song is, much better than the stuff on the radio today.
I still have their LPs in my collection. I though the music and vocals were amazing. The band I was in at that time and most everyone at the time didn't like it at all. I even learned some of their songs. It helped me grow as a musician. 🎸
I remember being a loyal Nightmusic fan during my high school years in the 70s and I remember this specific show. The host was the inimitable Reiner Schwartz. This video brings back great memories.
Never seen a live version of this song before. This performance is awesomeness on a scale you cannot measure. Wish I could have seen this live in person.
FM did a college Tour back around 1980 with SAGA, and they were INCREDIBLE! However, it was apparently more popular closer to the GTA schools, due to the Radio Signal Regionality. Their show came to Grant Hall at Kingston's Queen's University, which is a like a BIG Church; Spectacular Venue!
I can only imagine how mind blowing this was in 1976. Its pretty mind blowing now, but we are much more used to hearing those kind of synth and effected stringed instruments now. Im glad this wasnt lost to time.
I can never listen to this live version of this song without wheeling it back and starting again at least three times. Such a hypnotizing, mesmerizing experience it is.......
Yes I am a huge Kim Mitchell/Max Webster fan, and an FM fan, as I am Canadian, met Kim, Geddy, Nash, etc....my fave Kim Mitchell song...All We Are, you left out Prism, Harlequin, Toronto, Headpins, Tom Cochrane and Red Rider, Saga, The Kings..there are so many awesome Canadian bands we should celebrate them all!
This is a great example of people doing something that they were born to do. Nash the Slash understood music, he played/performed music as if he were the inventor of music. He was so talented that watching his performance instantly puts a smile on my face. Nash had laser focus, for example Nash didn't want guitars on any of his solo recordings so when David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) offered to play/record on Nash's Children of the Night, Nash stuck to his vision and declined the offer. That's ROCK STAR BOSS
Playing 2 keyboards, a bass pedal and singing, I love it. Amazing that people appreciate losers on American Idol but guys with the real talent are virtualy unknown.
OMG! This had to be the single most influencial musical moment of my entire life! Seeing this again after so many years sends shivers down my spine. Ever since seeing this and Black Noise on Nightmusic concert I've been a huge fan of FM and Nash the Slash. Unfortunately, not being from Toronto my opportunities to see them have been limited to just 5 shows over the years. I'd love to see Black Noise as it is the more fascinating piece. Thanks muchly
Nash the Slash -- I saw him in concert at a small club in Buffalo, around 1982. I had heard his music on Canadian radio station CFNY for a few years before that; always loved his solo stuff and songs with FM. Didn't realize he had passed... RIP Nash/Jeff.
This is insane... can you imagine watching this or better yet seeing it live in 1976? Waaaaaaaay ahead of their time. Never heard of them until about 20 minutes ago when this was aired on an internet radio show. Thanks for the upload!
Just a kid when KSHE 95 St. Louis played this song; I was mesmerized and in love. I believe it is one of those songs that opened me up to the geniuses who stepped out of the box to do their genius thing for us. Thank you!!!
This is so Canadian & so amazing! How have I never heard of this show? Well, I guess being born in '72 didn't help. The lead singer is not only singing but playing with both hands & using a foot! How do you even do that? Thanks so much for sharing this rare gem!
I remember watching this performance on the Ontario public TV channel (TVO) late one night. Still love it. At the time, I had a friend who was into playing early synthesizer music.
Back when the band was a duo - Martin Deller hadn't joined on drums. And Nash wasn't wearing the bandages. Saw them at the Chimney (upstairs of the Gasworks) about a year later with Marty and the Neon sign. Thanks for posting this!
There's a bit of a problem with that: The master tapes no longer exist, 'cause a fire broke out on the Passport Records vault. FM's tapes were caught in the fire.
Ever heard of MAX WEBSTER? Kim Mitchell was the frontman, he named the band after a high school shop teacher. They were a good 70's band from Toronto..opened for RUSH alot but never really made endroads in the U.S. Checkout these songs by Max Webster: A million Vacations, High Class in Borrowed Shoes, Diamonds, BATTLESCAR - Battle Scar is with Rush, probably their best song. Kim Mitchell had some good songs in the 80's under his own name.... Lager & Ale, Patio Lanterns,go for a soda.
Love this song. great Canadian song. Just heard it on the local radio station? You can buy this song on Google music streaming service. Or if you are an Apple fan boy, you can buy it on iTunes. Long live Canadian music
I did see them open for Rush....what a great show and they were such a complimentary band to the whole experience. One was just as good as the other! Miss that erra....
Saw them headline in Vancouver at the P.N.E. Gardens back up band Max Webster. That was a great night. Just a few metres from the stage with my childhood pal Ziggy.
great tune from the Canadian scene- this song is a total radio song and one I have loved since i was a child and a radiohead. ahh, the good old days!! thanks for sharing and for the post.
Saw FM in Schaumburg (Chicago Suburb)at a big club called "B'ginnings" in the 70s. I remember how the band said they were blown away by all the fans they had in attendance.
is it just me but when i see Nash without his bandages wearing a top hat and sun glasses, i think gee is that where Slash from Gun n Roses got his look from hell he even stole the name....Slash
Miss You Nash...Thx for the black inked autograph(in running ink) on a bar napkin diagonally, all though I woke up(extreme disapointment though) realizing that i hadn't got it!
WOW! That must have been in the early to mid 70's! The first time I saw Nash was on Nightmusic back in 1977 when he started covering up with bandages. I was an avid fan. Saw them many times in small town bars across the Niagara Region. Usually the bars had no cover charge either!
This is one of Canada's best bands ever..... They should get a star on the walk of fame. Or at least get some recognition for what they did with a lifetime achievement award of some sort. Forget the Juno's they're a real joke.
@Kohntarkosz There is a drummer in the band. Martin Deller was his name but didn't come to the band until 1977. This video is recorded in 1967 (year before FM's debute album 'Black Noise'). On Black Noise (first album) Deller plays drums for this song.
My brother and his band at the time had the honor of opening up for them at a bar in Utica,NY(Four Acres) waaay back when...I got autographs, the song list/sheet,ads,and all sorts of stuff from it...WOUR actually played it live on the air(the first set)and I taped it onto an 8-Track(late 70's,sorry!),which has since busted, but if I can fix it,I'll copy the show.I was under 16 so I couldn't get in to the show, but my other brother went...great show!...They had Ben Mink with them when they played.
@quincee33 I did, in fact I have "Let Go the Line" on my ipod. I found it on iTunes. When I listen to it, it always takes me back to my childhood, growing up in the 80's. I like Kim Mitchell's solo work as well. I think he is still a DJ at Q107 in Toronto.
Oh my Gawd, I thank you much! I've been looking for a clip like this for years! Thank you! You may not have any idea of how much seeing this means to me . . .
I'm so used to the Black Noise version-it's great to hear the original Way under-appreciated group I just found a copy of the Direct to Disc album on Ebay-can't wait!
70 year old Progger here...never heard these guys before right now. HOLY SHIT!!!!
20 year old and progger as well. i discovered them not too long ago but i always come back to watch this performance. i highly recommend listening to black noise and journey! also nash the slash’s solo stuff is amazing! wolf is a masterpiece
`Check out Black Nosie; title track from first album. Beauty.
Nash the Slash R.I.P..
What's the best thing about this? Somebody was smart enough to record this live performance on their VHS. It's saved for posterity.
If memory serves me correctly, this was originally aired on TVO. I bought a CD from Nash at a performance that included this material. Miss you Nash.
I remember seeing it on TVO. It was an interesting obscure late night show. Early synth music.
The program was Night Music, originally hosted by Reiner Schwartz. It appeared Friday nights - I can’t recall the time. It was a terrific program with alternative, progressive and avant garde music. I miss it and my teen years.
Ah yes. Reiner Schwartz. Good memory. Thx.
Saw these guys at the Riverside Hotel in Oakville Ontario 1970's. Always liked them.
I remember the era, but don't remember this band... And I'm from this area east of Toronto
Trenton Ontario
They played at my college in Kitchener in the 80's.
I'm 58 years old they were my first concert I saw them open for rush at varsity stadium in toronto I never heard of them before but man they blew my mind I still look up black noise once in a while I love that album oh yeah I saw them in 1979 I was 15 smoked some weed and will never forget it a great memory

That was my first show too. I was 14.
I loved Triumph and Saga, and sang Limelight in my band in the early '80s. We did YYZ, too. Saga played Centennial College pub night & it was epic!
@@wholeshebang1 I miss that time in my life when music was everything! I play guitar and have for decades, its my only escape left!! Cheers!
I'm still a working musician (with the exception of the pandemic restrictions shutting down music venues), so being able to play a few instruments, and with most of my friends being musicians, it's made life not only bearable, but enjoyable. Rock on!
loved learning their keyboards, insanely talented group of players
@@cryptohalloffame and now we know what Nash The Slash looks like without his bandages on 😂

Saw them open for Rush in 1981. They blew the audience away.
I was there Bro!
i was at that show, moving pictures tour, FM blew rush away! march 23 1981, maple leaf gardens :D
Probably the best song ever written and performed. This song was so ahead of its time! I have the original LP signed by the members of the band. True art this song is, much better than the stuff on the radio today.

Not so much anymore..... Same 500 Classic rock songs plus new 'rock'. Garbage. Same 4 or 5 AC/DC, Zepplin, Aerosmith.......C'mon Man......

One of my all time favorite bands, but such a pain to search with a name like FM
RIP Nash the Slash, you changed my view of music.
The original 2-man lineup, even before the bandages! Thank you!!
Cruised to the edges of my imagination listening to this song ,album ,band ! Thank You Slash and FM !
FM was way ahead of there time.
A rare glimpse of Nash the Slash un-'masked'!
Probably the most underrated musicians/band of all times. Epic anyway.
I can only imagine how mind blowing this was in 1976. Its pretty mind blowing now, but we are much more used to hearing those kind of synth and effected stringed instruments now. Im glad this wasnt lost to time.
Ahhh Tracking on VHS tapes. my how far we've come.
Thanks for posting - this is a piece of classic Canadian music history! Here's to FM - they and Max Webster should have made it - big!!
I can never listen to this live version of this song without wheeling it back and starting again at least three times.
Such a hypnotizing, mesmerizing experience it is.......
This keyboard player is as good as Ray Mazarek

my first concert was rush and fm at the aud in buffalo in 80 black noise surveilence and city of fear were all great albums
Playing 2 keyboards, a bass pedal and singing, I love it. Amazing that people appreciate losers on American Idol but guys with the real talent are virtualy unknown.
Bless you for this comment. It’s heartbreakingly true. What a better society we could’ve been!

These guys would play the bars around Toronto back in the day, they were a favourite of mine.
I love FM but can`t argue with that.
Aww man...I just found out. RIP. I liked this guy.
I had the FM "Black Noise" album in 1979.
43 years later, it is STILL a heavy favorite of mine!
OMG! I remember watching this on TV-Ontario was it? Back in the 70s! Thank you!
It was this show, caught one drunken night, that introduced me to FM.
Me too, though I wasn't drinking, just flipping through the channels. Hooked me, right away.
Q107 Early 80s Played The Crap out of this Awesome Canadian Music.

My friend also sang lead and played 2 keyboards in her Genesis and ELP cover band in the '80s.
I remember watching this back in the 70's. I watched it when it was repeated too. This entire program should be released on DVD. Thanks for posting!
All I can say is thank god for Nash the Slash and the band we know as FM
I remember watching this performance on the Ontario public TV channel (TVO) late one night. Still love it. At the time, I had a friend who was into playing early synthesizer music.

This song is absolutely timeless. Steven Wilson from Porcupine Tree needs to remix in 5.1.
There's a bit of a problem with that: The master tapes no longer exist, 'cause a fire broke out on the Passport Records vault. FM's tapes were caught in the fire.
thank you gaqry numan forsharing Nash with the world

this is such an epic tune. so glad to know and hear about it. Crank this one up folk.
36 years since I heard this. Wow.
I saw them a few times, the last time at the Queensbury Arms in 1980. Great live act. Brings back a lot of memories of fun times.
I saw FM in the 70's in Toronto when I worked for WEA Music!
I still can wrap my mind around this song.
I remember hearing this when it first aired and still prefer this over the album version.
And CFNY, the Spirit of Radio@
Saw FM in Schaumburg (Chicago Suburb)at a big club called "B'ginnings"

Terry Kolthof good point.
You can't deny the rip there.

WOW! That must have been in the early to mid 70's! The first time I saw Nash was on Nightmusic back in 1977 when he started covering up with bandages. I was an avid fan. Saw them many times in small town bars across the Niagara Region. Usually the bars had no cover charge either!
Totally awesome in creative contemplation.........
those glasses are icing on the 70's cake. just discovered this band on XM a few weeks ago. love it.
Thanks again for posting this video -- I keep watching it -- love Slash's solo break. Thanks!!
This is one of Canada's best bands ever..... They should get a star on the walk of fame. Or at least get some recognition for what they did with a lifetime achievement award of some sort. Forget the Juno's they're a real joke.
TVO IN 1976 WAS FREAKIN COOL
Completely agree! Not to mention, this is one of the rare times that Nash the Slash performed without his bandages!
have seen them at least a dozen times in the eighties, they we're a great bar band
Such an awesome song...glad they play it on a few stations that i listen to.
@Kohntarkosz
There is a drummer in the band. Martin Deller was his name but didn't come to the band until 1977. This video is recorded in 1967 (year before FM's debute album 'Black Noise'). On Black Noise (first album) Deller plays drums for this song.
RIP Nash The Slash....sad day....a real pioneer
Amazing job just the two of them
Excellent keyboard playing by Cameron Hawkins!
Keyboards are an ELKA Rhapsody 610 and Moog Minimoog
My brother and his band at the time had the honor of opening up for them at a bar in Utica,NY(Four Acres) waaay back when...I got autographs, the song list/sheet,ads,and all sorts of stuff from it...WOUR actually played it live on the air(the first set)and I taped it onto an 8-Track(late 70's,sorry!),which has since busted, but if I can fix it,I'll copy the show.I was under 16 so I couldn't get in to the show, but my other brother went...great show!...They had Ben Mink with them when they played.
this song triggers energy waves through my body like no other!
RIP Nash.
Great stuff, thanks for posting this video.
Thank you!
You may not have any idea of how much seeing this means to me . . .
I'm so used to the Black Noise version-it's great to hear the original Way under-appreciated group
I just found a copy of the Direct to Disc album on Ebay-can't wait!
Love this tune..
