Thank you for the fascinating tour, Sinead. The de la pole family are remembered very much in Yorkshire (Hull) area. (My home city) The family held huge swathes of land - they are still remembered in Hull by street names ie. De La Pole avenue & de la pole hospital . Margaret de la pole was considered to be one of the last elderly stalwarts dating from the wars of the roses whose family line could oppose the Tudor claim for the throne. Henry felt at the time that there was a significant threat from this family and supporters. I think of “A man for all seasons” stunning film about Sir Thomas More when I watched your tour. Fabulous!

@Free Tours by Foot -London. 10:38 Edward Stafford 3rd Duke of Buckingham, is my Grandfather, as well as 3 of the 4 sons of Grandfather King Edward III.
The festival atmosphere also accompanied those condemned to death during the French Revolution. At that time execution was a form of entertainment for the masses as is most violence is today in movies and on television.
Catherine of Aragon was originally married the Henry VII's first son, Arthur, elder brother to Henry VIII. After Arthur's death Henry VIII decided it was only right that she should still be Queen and so took on his brother's widow as his wife... Didn't last long obviously.
Very enjoyable and informative tour Sinead. Just wish to point out that Jane Seymour is buried in St George's Chapel at Windsor with Henry VIII and not at St Peter ad Vincula.
@@ToursbyFootLondon Thank you for the link Sinead. Excellent tour. I was there back in 2002, as I live in Oxfordshire, but I found your tour much more informative. There is a natural feel to your tours and I could listen to you all day. I love history. I shall look up more of your walkabouts. Keep up the great work.
@@Sineadlondontourguide well Sinead I think we all enjoy your work because your commentary is second to none...and as they say up north ur always well turned out....
Home Secretary Jack Straw in 1997 announced that they were repealing the last of the capital punishment laws. And yes because politics is not a speedy business it finally went through as you said Sinead in 1998.
Thanks for this tour. I lived for a while in London and visited the Tower but never saw half of this. I feel especially sad for the Second World War German spy hanged in the Tower. He was only doing his duty, as he saw it, by his country. I think he was the spy mentioned by the hangman Albert Pierrepont, who hanged him, in Pierrepont's autobiography. He was mentioned surprisingly unsympathetically. Pierrepont clearly didn't see it my way. Perhaps enduring a war hardens one's outlook. I also feel sad for Margaret de la Pole. I suspect the story about her running from the executioner is either a gross exaggeration or a totally fabricated tale put about by the Tudors. I've heard it said that at that time being afraid to die was seen as a sign of not daring to face God's judgement and the story put her in a bad light. I think Henry VIII not only took her life but took away her good name after death as well.
Just as a point of interest Sinead - did you know it is still a capital offence (and still on the ancient statute books and has never been repealed) to not eat mint sauce with lamb!!! Apparently, in the middle ages when the very poor would 'rustle' a sheep from the landowner, would butcher it and eat it there wasn't ready access to mint (I know - today it grows in profusion - but not in the middle ages) and so only the rich would eat mint sauce with lamb. If you were caught eating lamb without mint sauce it was assumed you had no right to the sheep and you could be executed for it. Capital punishment for sheep-stealing was relealed in 1832 but the mint sauce clause was forgotten and not repealed. So - always make sure you have mint sauce with your lamb :)
Great account, but it was Margaret Pole, (not Pope), and Jane Seymour is buried in St George's chapel Windsor Castle in a tomb with Henry VIII and Charles I.
I am surprised that King Henry is seen as a romantic figure sometimes but in reality he wears a sadistic monster. I am glad there is a memorial for his victims. I would like to place so flowers 💐for their memories.

Their marriage lasted 23 years, although it had a tragic end I wouldn't say it didn't last long
@@tazmin5020 Good point. I worded that badly.
Very enjoyable and informative tour Sinead. Just wish to point out that Jane Seymour is buried in St George's Chapel at Windsor with Henry VIII and not at St Peter ad Vincula.
Good catch, Marcos! Sinead visited Henry's grave in this video: ua-cam.com/video/wNOMkDT69Ts/v-deo.html :)
Awesome
Great
Thank you Nigel
Delighted you enjoyed it

@@ToursbyFootLondon they are the best can't go on them now. As I'm disabled love watching them on my computer
Wasn't Margaret named Pole? (not Pope)
Thanks, for yet another great tour ❤️❤️❤️
You are correct, Anne!
Home Secretary Jack Straw in 1997 announced that they were repealing the last of the capital punishment laws. And yes because politics is not a speedy business it finally went through as you said Sinead in 1998.
I actually live for your extra bits of info
Amazing knowledge and loyal following
Thank you
Sinead
way too excited about this video… i love the doom and gloom 😂
Did it live up to expectations? We have a few other execution-themed videos.
@@ToursbyFootLondon always does! looking forward to the other videos ☺️
Shana we are doom n gloom girls methinks
Thanks for watching lovely
Sinead
Why is the area around the Roman wall so terribly overgrown?
Tower Hill is such a sad site of deaths, so sad to read all the tablets. 😢
The spy (Josef Jakobs) was shot in the firing range at the tower in 1941
Aren't ALL deaths final?
Good catch. We haven't laughed about that one in some time.
Woo hoo my girls back xxxxx
Delighted to see you too and hear from you Courtney
Thank you as always

Their name was 'POLE', not POPE
I am surprised that King Henry is seen as a romantic figure sometimes but in reality he wears a sadistic monster. I am glad there is a memorial for his victims. I would like to place so flowers 💐for their memories.
Maybe one day you can in person Parminder
Lovely to hear from you
Hope you are well
Sinead
It’s Katherine OF Aragon not Katherine Aragon and the shroud of Turin.
Oh look! An execution, death, doom and gloom tour. That must mean it is Sinaed day!
I have no idea what you are talking about Brian 🤣🤣🤣🤣 💀
