One of my favourite parts of London - it was the driver of the wagon who didn't drink - he was on the wagon. The wagon had an official name, the Lurch - left in the lurch. Tyburn Road connected Tyburn Execution Ground to Newgate Prison, now Oxford Street, New Oxford Street etc all the way to what is now the Old Bailey. Love London history, great video as always x

That's incorrect the saying comes from To make money from old rope comes from the practice of picking apart old ropes to create oakum (a fibrous material used with hot pitch for caulking seams in old-time sailing vessels). It was a chore performed by women and children in Victorian workhouses or by sailors when their ships were docked.

It is said that the head of Cromwell was retrieved by his daughters, the body was left in a ditch. Both daughters are buried, below ground level in a crypt in St Nicolas Church Chiswick, close to the River Thames. In the late 1880`s the Church was being renovated and an additional coffin was found with no name. The vicar fearing that it held the head of Cromwell, bricked up the entry point and further sealed it, not wanting it to become a visit for tourist or attended by anti Cromwell factions . Its still sealed to this day . This Church is where I was christened, and grew up with this information.

Hi Sinead, the term Hungover was also taken from when the lowest form of accommodation in Victorian England was access to bend over a rope for the night at the price of a penny. Another fantastic tour. Light years ahead of any other. Although Jools is very good too. Different. That tower with the grassy side? I like it a lot better than the giant obnoxious ferris wheel. A lot easier to take down too when the thrill is gone.

Hi Sinead Thanks so much for all your wonderful videos. I am from Australia, and can't wait to be able to travel again. I have some ideas for your walks...the gates of London (Aldgate, Ludgate etc) The locations of now gone stately buildings like the Savoy Palace (under the Savoy Hotel), Devonshire House, Scotland Yard (built on an old palace), Richmond Palce etc, Love your work. Take care.

I absolutely love your walks. I do a lot of walking with my daughter and my sister around London. So now I sound like a history guide after watching your videos. Don't worry they know it's all from your videos as I share them. The marble arch mound, yes I've been up it. They scrapped the fee and you were allowed up, up until September, now you have to pay again, so I've heard. I hate heights. The mound doesn't look so high, well I didn't think so. And whatever people think, it's a part of history, so up I went. It's high. It's really high. I came down in the lift. It's like walking on basic scaffolding. That's what you're doing. You may like the views. I took a couple of photos. When I was brave enough. I didn't like it. It felt too fragile and its those stairs where you can see the ground between the steps. So being so high up and seeing that, turned my stomach.. But do I think you should go up, yes. It's nice to read about history but if you get the chance, take part in that history too.
And thanks for passing on our tidbits to your family! If you know of anyone else who might also enjoy these videos, please share us with them. We would really appreciate that! Thank you.

Hi sinead just wondered if you can show some museums in the near future i know it isn't free for you but i think you will have more subscribers what do you think ?🤷♂️
In the mid to late 19th century America, there were public hangings which drew crowds, and many people showed up by train for the morbid entertainment.
Very interesting and knowledgeable history lesson. I am not Catholic but would like to spend a couple of minutes in the Church at Tyburn to say a prayer for the souls of those executed. Sanjosemike (no longer in CA)

On May 4th 1535 the first 4 catholic martyrs were killed at Tyburn Tree. Today's the anniversary. 1 of them was the superior of the Carthusian monastery in London. Please visit that place (the Charterhouse). Greetings from Argentina! (I considered the idea of becoming a Carthusian monk some years ago btw)
I'd love to do a paranormal investigation at this spot, and would want to hug a ghost of someone who died for an apple. I can't imagine how life was for folks back then.

playing catch up again... Once again another good one. Also could you or someone that might see this explain the street name signs please? Like at timestamp 7:10 it says Bayswater Road W2. What does the W2 indicate?
That area has always for as long as I have known it, been an area of strong hearted people and it’s great for people watching as some interesting characters!
Excellent again Sinead. I was at Marble Arch on Saturday and saw the mound. I don't like it. It takes away from the splendour of the Marble Arch itself, which I feel needs to be seen in isolation for best effect. A real shame.
Glad that you enjoyed the video, Frankie. If you haven't done so already, you can hopefully check out our back catalogue of virtual London tours ua-cam.com/users/FreeToursbyFootLondonvideos. There is more where this came from.
I always love Free tours by foot vids. I would just to like to add, to make it clear as im sure you know that the Tyburn Tree was not an actual tree, but rather a triangular-shaped gallows structure made of iron, used for public executions. The name "Tyburn" is derived from the Old English word "teoburna", which means "boundary stream", as it was originally a small stream that marked the boundary of the ancient parish of Marylebone.
I would not have liked to be the guest of honour at the execution? Scary times! Lol interesting to hear that the hangover may have derived from this. Blessings Luv Ontario Canada stay safe.🐝
We can't wait to show it to you! For now, if you haven't done so already, you can hopefully check out our back catalogue of virtual London tours ua-cam.com/users/FreeToursbyFootLondonvideos. There is more where this came from.
Bodies were buried at various locations (including the nearby Connaught Square) or given to scientists to use as cadavers. It would often depend on how much money the family had.
I work in three museums in Yorkshire all about crime and punishment.we didnt use hanging where i live, they were sent to York, but some of the stories are heartbreaking. A child of 7 transported to Australia for stealing a loaf of bread

After a public hanging the rope was often sold in sections to the people watching, this is where the phrase “money for old rope” comes from.
Interesting. Thanks for adding your knowledge, Joanne.
Would you believe it 👏as they say every day is an education 👍
That's incorrect the saying comes from
To make money from old rope comes from the practice of picking apart old ropes to create oakum (a fibrous material used with hot pitch for caulking seams in old-time sailing vessels). It was a chore performed by women and children in Victorian workhouses or by sailors when their ships were docked.

So glad we are able to bring you some history and entertainment during this strange new time!
I love sinead! Her videos are so interesting she is good at what she does 🥰
Hi Sinead
Thanks so much for all your wonderful videos. I am from Australia, and can't wait to be able to travel again.
I have some ideas for your walks...the gates of London (Aldgate, Ludgate etc)
The locations of now gone stately buildings like the Savoy Palace (under the Savoy Hotel), Devonshire House, Scotland Yard (built on an old palace), Richmond Palce etc,
Love your work. Take care.
Great video!! Really enjoyed it 👏

@@ToursbyFootLondon thank you! Will do 💛
I absolutely love your walks.
Thanks, Michele. I think we will do a Mound video. So far, looks like a go. Thanks for commenting.
And thanks for passing on our tidbits to your family! If you know of anyone else who might also enjoy these videos, please share us with them. We would really appreciate that! Thank you.

Love your tours Sinead, I love history escpecially that around London, you are so informative, your gorgeous Irish lilt all goes to make one very enjoyable armchair tour, Thankyou from a Southerner now living in the North, I’m off to the “ Old Bailey” now if anyone should want me 😜🥰🐾🥰🐾🥰🐾
Enjoy :).
Sinead, you are simply brilliant. Could you do some Victorian ghost walks?
We are mulling some ideas around concerning ghost tours. Thanks for the suggestion.
Love your walking tours. The Marble Arch Mound is simply awful! I lived in London many years ago and before you explained the mound I was completely confused. I understand it is temporary? Thanks!
Hi Janet
It is temporary and apparently courting much controversy amongst Londoners
Thanks for watching
Sinead
Yes, so much controversy, we have no choice but do do a short video climb of it :).
Just found this channel brilliant
Thank you madam
Welcome to the channel, Alan! We are glad you found us :)

7:01 sad to see those old school telephone boxes looking abandoned.

Hi sinead just wondered if you can show some museums in the near future i know it isn't free for you but i think you will have more subscribers
what do you think ?🤷♂️
It's a wonderful idea. The issue is some museums, particularly galleries, won't allow filming. We have a few ideas.
In the mid to late 19th century America, there were public hangings which drew crowds, and many people showed up by train for the morbid entertainment.
The Shining Sinead back, you look so beautiful today as London - UK ...... Good info you mentioned
Very interesting and knowledgeable history lesson. I am not Catholic but would like to spend a couple of minutes in the Church at Tyburn to say a prayer for the souls of those executed.
Sanjosemike (no longer in CA)

Of course make a film of the mound! :) BTW aren't there any boxes to stand on at Speaker's Corner?
Usually on Sunday mornings but it hasn’t been running yet, as far as I know
On May 4th 1535 the first 4 catholic martyrs were killed at Tyburn Tree. Today's the anniversary. 1 of them was the superior of the Carthusian monastery in London. Please visit that place (the Charterhouse). Greetings from Argentina! (I considered the idea of becoming a Carthusian monk some years ago btw)
Thank you Sinead!
I wonder how many of my ancestors got the drop. We have been known to be "rough and dirty at night".
Very Interesting video. I was wondering where the church was.
I'd love to do a paranormal investigation at this spot, and would want to hug a ghost of someone who died for an apple. I can't imagine how life was for folks back then.
A paranormal investigation would be very interesting!
Really interesting thank you 👍

playing catch up again... Once again another good one. Also could you or someone that might see this explain the street name signs please? Like at timestamp 7:10 it says Bayswater Road W2. What does the W2 indicate?
The W stands for Westminster and the number is the area within Westminster.
At 9.32 in your video there’s a 560 to Barnsley National Express I used to drive them
Hope this sparked some good memories then, Grace.
Those hanging sites where ever where in London. Wow and me a londoner and didn't no much about this at all. Thank you . ❤️
That area has always for as long as I have known it, been an area of strong hearted people and it’s great for people watching as some interesting characters!
I'm going to teach my students about the possible origin of the word "hangover". Thank you! 😎
Excellent!
Another fabulous compliment
Thank you again Maria for yet another gratuity
Sinead
Excellent again Sinead. I was at Marble Arch on Saturday and saw the mound. I don't like it. It takes away from the splendour of the Marble Arch itself, which I feel needs to be seen in isolation for best effect. A real shame.
I agree.
£4 to walk up some steps not worth it.
WOW !!! What has happened to my city ? Why is it soooo dirty ? Don’t they clean it anymore ?
Yes please. A tour of the mound
Stay tuned, Annette.
Thanks really enjoyed that 👍

I always love Free tours by foot vids. I would just to like to add, to make it clear as im sure you know that the Tyburn Tree was not an actual tree, but rather a triangular-shaped gallows structure made of iron, used for public executions. The name "Tyburn" is derived from the Old English word "teoburna", which means "boundary stream", as it was originally a small stream that marked the boundary of the ancient parish of Marylebone.
We always love the extra info :)
Something dark from London to watch later 👍🏻
Let us know what you think when you are finished watching.
I would like to see a video on and about, the mound
Noted.
Gr8 tour as usual Sinead but what a horrible thing to watch break a leg .now know where those saying came from
I would not have liked to be the guest of honour at the execution? Scary times! Lol interesting to hear that the hangover may have derived from this. Blessings Luv Ontario Canada stay safe.🐝
Thanks a million
Cant wait to see London.
We can't wait to show it to you! For now, if you haven't done so already, you can hopefully check out our back catalogue of virtual London tours ua-cam.com/users/FreeToursbyFootLondonvideos. There is more where this came from.
What happened to the scaffold? Is it in a museum somewhere? What about any bodies that were there?
Bodies were buried at various locations (including the nearby Connaught Square) or given to scientists to use as cadavers. It would often depend on how much money the family had.
I work in three museums in Yorkshire all about crime and punishment.we didnt use hanging where i live, they were sent to York, but some of the stories are heartbreaking. A child of 7 transported to Australia for stealing a loaf of bread
Heartbreaking
Sinead, why is the Marble Arch Mound such a disappointment to some? I'd love to see it and know for myself, so please make a video of it!
She did last year! :) ua-cam.com/video/LPi6BWcU048/v-deo.html
