f you have a Pelican case, just replace the last digit of the model with a “1”. For example, the 1750 Case uses 1751 Foam: Pelican 1751 Original 3 PC Replacement Foam Set for Pelican Case 1750 (use our web-site search)
This was really helpful. I just bought my first pelican case for a favorite rifle of mine. Thank you so much for posting this! By the way, sweet trophy room!
i wish i could say this without sounding like a jerk but this is one of the best videos I have seen! I am glad I have seen this video. This hunter should be proud! He was thoughtful and precise. it shows he has years of experience. I am going to use this for photography.
Thank you. Great tutorial on cutting the foam and layout. I have a single and double case and have been procrastinating on cutting them, not wanting to screw it up. TY!
Great question, and the answer is YES, but not in a case with such firm cut out structure like in the Storm or Pelican cases. In other cases, or in the case of using a soft case for your gun like the OPMOD double gun case, or the new OPMOD Waterproof MRS (Modular Sporting Rifle) case that I'll be using in Alaska next week instead of the middle piece of foam, yes. The foam cut out for a gun is so secure, that it really does not matter how the gun is positioned. Thanks for watching & the question!
Love the electric knife trick. Wouldn’t you want your scope facing up towards the case handle so the rifle takes the weight when some idiot plops it on the ground instead of your scope? Just my ocd thinking.
My brain exploded when he suggested saving your scraps so you could use them as a base for another gun setup. Seriously, I'm now sitting here drooling on myself. This will work very well for my Rifle Dynamics AKM and my future GA precision build. BRAVO!
This was excellent. Looks like the electric knife is the way to go for cutting foam. Thanks for posting! Saved me a BUNCH of headache, time, and crappy looking cases.
haha i was looking for the best way to cut acoustic foam. that is such an ingenious idea to use the turkey cutter. i would have never thought. good video btw. Thanks
@APhelps91 Hi there! We linked to the Pelican Storm 3300 (the one Steve uses in the video) and more storm cases in different sizes and colors in the description box. We tried to post it here for your convenience, but sadly UA-cam wouldn't allow it. Hope this helps!
What a fantastic tutorial. It was exactly what I was looking for. I would have NEVER thought about using an electric carving knife, but it makes perfect sense. So does the serial number up. Why not cut down on the time spent with TSA. Steve is a fantastic Instructor. Slow and concise. Keep him teaching on UA-cam Optics Planet. Thanks for all the great information Steve.
Great tutorial! I'm not a hunter but just bought my first pelican for my camera gear but had no idea how to cut the foam, I was about to use a razor blade. Glad I saw this tutorial first! Great idea about the electrical carving knife!
@justice2576 It's a pretty easy knife to handle. If it's your first time we would recommend practicing on something so you get a feel for the knife before going away at the foam. Thanks for watching!
My case lid closes without having to put a hand on it to latch it closed. But my scope turret does leave a little imprint on the top foam is that okay? As long as there is no serious pressure on it?
Awesome vid been wanting to do this for an electronics case but didn't know how to cut the foam other than with a stanly knife. Great tip with the electric carving knife
scope should be by the carry handle. if its upside down like in the video the optics are taking the the weight of the rifle plus any time its set down or dropped.
But then it goes back to what this guy was saying keeping all the weight by the wheels, by rotating it like you're saying will put more weight by the handle
Hi 62T, If you travel, and especially if you fly, you need to have your firearms in a non-active state (for a lack of a better term, sorry, it's Monday morning haha). For boltguns, this is done by keeping the bolt separate. Overall it is just a safety precaution. Thanks for the comment!
If you turn the two rifles so that the grips are facing each other, with the barrels pointing in opposite directions, you should be able to accomplish that - I hope that makes sense.
Informative video. I had a choice of either a Pelican or SKB case. I chose SKB bc it's stronger, lighter, better wheels, rubber handles, better latches and has a $1500 coverage warranty if an airline damages your equipment. Still made in the USA!

A jigsaw blade is meant to be used with a hard surface, I think a jigsaw would mangle the foam. Have you seen the type of craft knife that you can extend the blade slightly and snap off pre-scored sections as it wears? Take a new one, and extend the blade to full length. If you’re feeling up for a project, ar15.com has instructions for building your own hot wire cutter:
OK, Good video, if you can always guarantee that every baggage handler is going to roll that thing on it's wheels. Not going to happen. Every one of them is going to pick it up by the hand grip, and toss it to the next spot: the cart, the conveyor, and the guy in the cargo hold stowing stuff is going to do the same. I NEVER put a scoped gun inside with the scope to the hinges The wight of the rifle hammering the scope, every time it is dropped. Even when first picked up by the grip, by the owner to place it on the exam place, the weight of the rifle comes down on that expensive scope (remember the advice to pay more for your scope than your rifle?) That weight on the bell end (Objective end) will torque it at the narrow part. Great. No wonder the Professional Hunter insists on sighing shots on arrival. I put the scope toward the hand grip of the case. and I wedge some of the material I took out, into hard points to keep the scope from banging on the foam above it, no matter how hard the case is thrown. Never had a scope come out of zero, when we do sighting shots at the hunt.
A long bladed knife can work (the sharper the better, and heep it straight up and down), but it won't come out as nice. Craft stores sell hot wire cutters.
Um why would TSA ever check your serial number? I fly with guns all the time and have never seen them do that. I am genuinely curious about this. Now when you fly to another country like South Africa then the SAPS in RSA will check your serial numbers as will US Customs but TSA??? No.
Doesn't the manufacturer recommend that all parts have at least 1 inch spacing between everything? I notice, you don't want things too close to the edge, how close is too close?
+Jonathon Weeks Hi Jonathon, thanks for your question. I can't say for sure here, as this is a very specific question. Send this question to techsales@opticsplanet.com to reach our tech & product experts. Make sure to mention this particular video in your e-mail & we'll surely be able to answer.
Try using chalk instead of a marker to avoid leaving permanent marks on your foam.
f you have a Pelican case, just replace the last digit of the model with a “1”. For example, the 1750 Case uses 1751 Foam:

I agree this guy is efficient and helpful.... Why isn't everyone like this?
Thank you. Great tutorial on cutting the foam and layout. I have a single and double case and have been procrastinating on cutting them, not wanting to screw it up. TY!

Outstanding information well presented. But....enjoy TSA?

Great video. All the videos I've watched show rifles with no slings. Can it be cut out to fit a rifle with the sling on?
@ascetic43 Glad you found this video helpful young grasshopper. Thank you for watching.

Good tips, esp. putting extras under the egg crate foam. Nice job!
@95coolcar No problem, thank you for watching.
I don't own any guns, but have a number of Pelican cases. Excellent video.
Great tutorial! I'm not a hunter but just bought my first pelican for my camera gear but had no idea how to cut the foam, I was about to use a razor blade. Glad I saw this tutorial first! Great idea about the electrical carving knife!

You should glue the top foam to the bottom with spray mount. This will prevent the foam from shifting and adds additional stability.
Thank you for this wonderful tutorial, my good man.
My case lid closes without having to put a hand on it to latch it closed. But my scope turret does leave a little imprint on the top foam is that okay? As long as there is no serious pressure on it?
I bought one of these for my daisy red rider, works great!
Great - tip on the carving knife is really good. Thanks
Awesome vid been wanting to do this for an electronics case but didn't know how to cut the foam other than with a stanly knife. Great tip with the electric carving knife
If you dont own a electrical carving knife, what else can you use that works out nice?
scope should be by the carry handle. if its upside down like in the video the optics are taking the the weight of the rifle plus any time its set down or dropped.
Just rotate the foam...
But then it goes back to what this guy was saying keeping all the weight by the wheels, by rotating it like you're saying will put more weight by the handle
For the electric carving knife, is there a particular cutting blade I need to use to cut the foam?
Question...Why did you remove the bolt and carve out a separate opening for it? Wouldn't it be easier to leave it in the rifle?
Hi 62T,
If you travel, and especially if you fly, you need to have your firearms in a non-active state (for a lack of a better term, sorry, it's Monday morning haha). For boltguns, this is done by keeping the bolt separate.

Thanks for the comment!
I did it! Its not pretty but for a first time try it looks good to me. Thank you for the video!
Thank! Hope you will enjoy it. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask!
I'm undecided between the Pelican 1750 & iM3300, any suggestions? Great video and thx for sharing.
You did a great job on that! Well done!
Hi Jeremiah,
Thanks so much for the comment! It is much appreciated.
Steve uses a regular serrated blade which he says works very well on the foam.
Great, tips, thanks for taking the time to show us how to do it right the FIRST time!
Hey i have a speedmaster 552 and i just got black sharpie on its cherry furniture finish, and tips?
Can the hunting ammunition be put in the case as well? Or is that packed separately?
i did this method and i need to tell you thank you for makeing this vedio for me to see thank you it was sooooo much easier
Excellent presentation! Well prepared and executed.
For sure, an electric knife is a MUST on foam. Agreed! Nice job.
Thanks for your comment and watching! Glad we could help and if there is anything else we can do please feel free to continue commenting.
this is one the best videos I've seen

@paraguitarmedic That's great, we're happy you found it helpful for your next set up!

It's cheap on Amazon amzn.to/1o2tsTr
thats pretty cool ima try this u make it look easy
Pelican Cases are the best cases you can buy! Milatary tested. Hunter/Marksman Approved!
Well, I don't have an electric carving knife. But I do have a jigsaw. Do you think that would work in a pinch?
Thanks for sharing your video, oh i like the photo of the Goshawk.
You can use a water soluble caulk marker so you don’t have to flip nor keep perfectly perpendicular.
would you recomend this for a pellet rifle
Great vid
Very well done. You've got style.
Fantastic video! Very professional and very straight forward. Thank you sir!
Great Vid.
Now it's time to find the right one on Ebay.
Thanks
Could you use an electric jigsaw instead of the electric knife?
Great vid very informative I'm about to do mine now.
Glad you enjoyed it.
OpticsPlanet sir which sights are best for automatic rifles like a holographic site , reflex ,or something different

what's that fixed blade knife?
Excellent video! Thank you for all those tips.
Just how delicate are your scopes?
Scope should be toward the handle, not the hinges.
where can I find black or gray foam for case?
Great job, thank you. I have 3 cases for some revolvers and was wondering the best way to make my cuts neatly
Greetings!

One more question is your Foam Polyethylene? Regular? Or Firm?
I've never had anyone check the serial number on any of my firearms and I've been flying with firearms since the late 80's.
Great video. It really helped!
Great job on this video. Thanks!
Great job on the video. Now I know I won't butcher my Pelican case. Thank you

I have always used a piece of wire coat hanger in my soldering iron. Works great.
Hi ! What is the duct tape for ?
Every man needs duct tape !
Should use the electric foam cutters much more precise but other then that nice vid
Nice guy, nice rifle, nice case, nice video!
Great video! Thank you!!!
Excellent video... Thank you...
I think you will be happier with the Pelican case - it may cost more, but it should last you a lifetime. Een goede dag verder!
It's just a cool thing to have with 1001 uses including repairing the airplane that takes you deep into nowhere for the hunt

Jonathon Weeks I have one and I keep it about 1 1/2 inch away from the side just to be extra careful. But you coul probably get away with 1 inch
@lab2137 We'll be sure to let Steve know!
but i need to keep two rifles in the same case
TSA does not check your serial number
@blackbrd99 Thanks! We're happy to be of help.
@kjwarbrothers Good to hear we helped save you some time
