One of the, if not the, best videos on creating foam inlays. I was planning to CNC mill some inlays but that takes a lot of preparation and gives a bit mess so I'll give this I always used a small Olfa knife but using a scalpel works much better and accurate. I will try this on the non-branded foam I have but I most likely will be ordering some larger sheets for a cabinet I am making. Somehow local shops in the Netherlands only sell sheets in 400x600 mm size.
Great video - love that you don't skip any steps, no matter how obvious it would be for some people! Are there any plans for Pelican case inserts or Really Useful Box inserts (I'm sure there are a whole lot of crafters out there)?
Just did my first ever cut of Shadow Foam. Had trouble getting the scalpel blade to klick in place, had to use strong pliers and almost ruined the blade before cutting anything. But the cutting itself was easier than i thought, and i'm quite proudof the result😊
Thank you for this video and your products. I just spent 2 hours trying to cut a place for a battery in a foam insert I bought from the manufacturer. It looks horrid. So I am going to get this and hopefully help my hubby have well organized tools. ❤
I still think a good idea would be on your website to have a section where people can upload a picture or pictures of the layout or layouts they want, they pick the size and color of the foam they want and send it to you and you then cut it all out for them and ship it out. I know most people can and will do it themselves, but there could be some people who do not want to cut it out or can not cut it out due to a medical reason or what-ever. There would be an extra charge for this service of course but at least the people who would use this service will know that there foam will be cut correctly by someone who knows how to do it. I don't know, I just think it would be a cool idea for some people. I love the product and can not wait to order some!
Good summary video of the different techniques for cutting the tool shapes into the foam. Can you advise what the easiest way to cut down the depth of a packout insert? I have two 50mm inserts in on case and would like to thin out the bottom insert about 5mm to allow the top insert to sit lower. Tried peeling back, but didn't come out to well!
@@ShadowFoam Thanks for replying. I have the standard cutting kit not the pro, I will have a look for that type of knife next time I am at a DIY store and see how I get on.
An idea? Could shadow foam be used to pack out a tstak2 to hold,d Warhammer armies or paints? All you’d need for the paints is a circular sharp cutter, possibly for the figures too?
SO! I always wondered why you dont get jagged, lumpy bottom surfaces. You build up the foam in layers and use glue that is only tacky so when you pull at the foam cutout it separates at the nearest layer seam. very clever. Next question is how long will the layers hold together before they start to let go? I know....find an adhesive that will remain tacky for 6 Months. after that is will be set and strong. This way you have time to build, inventory, ship and the end user has time to cut, all before it sets. I have worked in an industry that used many different adhesives and those glue chemists are brilliant so I'm sure you can find the glue you need.
Would love to see you do a Trumpet. I am shopping for new foam for my trumpet case. I am in the USA too. What will it cost to get your stuff and pull this off? Case is 26” X14” X 5.75” (6” would work)… live in Chicago. Would be willing to collaborate to produce a video for you guys too.
Just order my first piece of foam. Any tips if part of an item with various depths is hidden by another part of the item so only have access to a partial edge. Many thanks
Apologies I have an item where the additional depth protrudes below the main shape so it can't be traced around with the item in place. Any tips to locate where to cut with any accuracy.
I’m a little OCD, haha - what happens if you lose a tool or want to replace it, do you suggest keeping the ripped out bits ? ( and do they glue back in easy, and can be cut again )… I’d hate to see empty spots everywhere. Haha
brilliant! Im about to make hand tool cut-outs for our electric lab at work! One question? i need to replicate the same cut-outs for about 6 drawers! We have 6 benches each with 4 drawers, & each bench has the identicle tool kit spread out between the 4 drawers. What method would you use, for say a tool lay-out stencil for consistancy? Wer'e going to try it with A3 sheets of paper that have been laminated! Hopefullyits going to look awesome! 👍
That is the most awesome tool holder in the background but how do you stop the tools falling out? Surely gavity would overcome them being cut into the shadow foam?

What was your Shadow Foam project?
@@ShadowFoam Just a simple Makita Makpac layout for a jigsaw and a few accessories - nothing too fancy but good to begin with.

let me know how you get on with it! I agree, manufacturer foam is awful!
@@ShadowFoam Thank you for having Ryobi inserts. Will the yellow clash with the lime green too much?
I've learned to measure once and cut twice from this lol! Great video and I can't wait to try this out for some of my own projects. 👍
Looking forward to seeing those Jess! Let me know how you get on!
why am i watching this? i don't even have tools.
Have you bought tools just to try this?
One can dream eh? :)
This means you have to go out and buy some tools 🎉
@@jesperbolopetersen630
The fewer tools you have the more tools you have left to buy 🎉
We need a video on the hot foam finisher, only thing I’ve used it for so far is as a heat gun for heat shrink tubing 😂

It’s a cool idea but I think the product is so easy to use, that extra cost could be saved to buy more tools! 👍
Hey, do you have a good way to label each tool in the foam? Like if you got 10 sockets you'd want to know which size socket is where.
Totally awesome. Can’t wait to order some for my garage
What project do you have in mind?
Is shipping costs to the USA NY expensive

Just ordered mine, you make it look easy 😮
It gets easy when you’ve done it as many times as I have 👍

Hi Jack, our foam is heat bound, not glue bound which makes it easier to tear but also set and strong.

How about glow in the dark foam.
I would buy it in a heartbeat!

The cut out bits can be glued back in and reused! We sell glue on our website and in our cutting packs for this very reason

You could also router out the inserts
You could indeed!
How do I order custom sheets of foam
Any experience with putting spanners on edge in a deeper drawer to get more in a drawer??
we have done it from time to time, but we'll do a dedicated video in the future!
I would like to try it. Do you do samples? I am in Sydney Australia.
No problem, order a sample at: www.shadowfoam.com/product/sample/
Just bought the foam and is ok to use either side of the foam for cutting. ??
Absolutely John go ahead! 👍
May sound odd, but do you do small cutting gloves as I only have small hands (size 7)or us it just a standard size ?
Just a standard size I’m afraid

Do you have templates for DJI drones
No templates I'm afraid, but we did do a Drone backpack build here: ua-cam.com/video/DcRkwm2dBKc/v-deo.html

Yes indeed, all products available on www.shadowfoam.com
This stuff is killing my fingernails. Is there a different method to get the peel started please?
Pliers or tweezers! Stay tuned for a top tips video to help with this! 👍
Seen it thanks! I did resort to pliers and it worked quite well. I’ve bought the smoothing bits so that’s my next challenge! 👍
Who sells you products in the US?
That is the most awesome tool holder in the background but how do you stop the tools falling out? Surely gavity would overcome them being cut into the shadow foam?
The foam is dense so they stay in there solid. Built it over a year ago and had no issues 👍
Is the foam paint thinners resistant please.
My Son is a car painter, be nice to put his guns away.
Should be as the foam isn’t painted, it’s dyed in creation
Should have packaged your items in foam
Leave this project for the Martha Stewart wives who like messing with your tools
