I feel like in an episode like this where they were trapped in close quarters, the old men being the strong and silent type and just having an intimidating presence would've been more effective than that cartoonish kung fu movie stuff.
It’s funny that for how many people consider this a quintessential doctor who series (10th doctor + rose and what not), it’s consistently probably the weakest of the three 10th doctor series
I put L&M in the top spot almost as a protest vote. The Moffat episode is a bit too cold and mechanical to be among his best and I think Impossible Planet falls apart in the second part. Good emotional finale, but the RTD deja vu is kicking in. L&M made me laugh and was unexpected, so top spot for me... but it's fluff pure and simple, just delightfully unexpected fluff.
@@stevenclubb7718 I would agree with you about Love and Monsters if the monster wasn't so awful in concept and execution. Love and Monsters for the first 30 minutes is one of the best of series 2. It also has the worst 15 minutes of series 2. It's hard to like a story where the plane doesn't land, but instead crashes into the goddamn mountain.
There have been worse episodes of Doctor Who, but in the context of series 2 Fear Her is definitely the weakest story with the Doctor overall. The episode is boring, there's bad child acting, and the alien plot doesn't really work. Additionally, the tone's all over the place since it bounces between goofy stuff like the Doctor running with the Olympic torch to the largely unresolved plot point of the girl and her mother being abused by her father. It's not a complete failure, but for me at least it's a very skippable episode of Doctor Who.
I like Rose and the 10th Doctor in that one, they're a great duo in that episode, and I like all the neighbors, but I really don't like all the other stuff
hardfugoo I’m not the first commenter but I’m a person who kinda likes fear her and would say that probably idiots lantern is worse. It has an ok story but it was boring and the villain was straight up annoying. Even though fear hers story is not as well written, the characters are more interesting and the tone is fun and goofy rather than a nothing. I’ll take goofy over boring
Good ranking. I like how you always explain all the choices. You can't rave or rant or act like a bad episode was an attack on you and your world. You, sir, are a professional.
Just re-addressing a point that I saw made in your "Idiots Lantern Review" comments. As a British person, I can appreciate that the way that the father acted, especially in 1950's Britain, didn't seem so much like a caricature. Admittedly, it was probably slightly exaggerated for drama but when are things on TV not. A man would be king in his own home, and societal pressures would make it so he would have to domineering, and to an extent controlling in the sense that everything that he says goes. In 2019, I can understand why it could be perceived as abuse, but back then it was a lot more common. I quite liked Tommy going after him in the end, it showed that he had somewhat forgiven and accepted him for his flaws, and by carrying his suitcase it showed he still respected him, which at the end of the day, was the most important thing for a man in the 1950's. Without the respect of his family (Wife/children), he would've been rejected by society and ridiculed. Tommy understood this, and showed that he did love his father. Donn't know how much of that point is coherent though. But, the episode still isn't very good like,. Just thought it was worth offering up my view on the point your raised.
That's hit the nail on the head. Applying modern standards to historical settings is really a hiding to nothing. While the story itself offers little to no sympathy to Eddie, those characters did - and indeed still do - exist. Eddie isn't abusive per se; he's very much a product of his time. Let's not forget, he fought in WWII, saw things we couldn't possibly imagine. He would have been raised by parents who would have grown up in the Victorian era, and all the strict discipline that entails. On paper, the character works: unfortunately, Jamie Foreman's performance is rather one-note, which is admittedly somewhat distracting. Should Rose have encouraged Tommy to go to him at the end? Possibly not, but she had not long encountered her dead dad in a parallel world, and was seemingly rejected by him, so maybe she wasn't thinking straight.
OragamiPigeon297 I concur. I’ve never agreed with him on his “abuse” point. I get the idea and I’m sure there’s some personal baggage there alluding to his stance on not wanting the son to reconcile but all around this didn’t seem like flat out abuse warranting never speaking to the father again. Yea, he’s awful but I feel like the message here was quite solid. I know forgiveness is a process but I feel like the father was a man who did deserve it and would probably change in the future. The son deserved to be apart of that and to be the bigger man.
I have to agree about the father's behavior. I'm an American, but my father was from St. Helens, England, and when I was growing up during the 1950s and '60s, my father, apart from the shouting, behaved in much the same way. He acted very much as the "King of his Castle," expecting to be obeyed at all times, and had no tolerance for dissent. I remember him sitting in his recliner and raising his voice over the TV to my mother in the kitchen, demanding to know when supper would be ready, then impatiently waiting to be called to the table when dinner was served. That was my dear old dad.
And no doubt you loved him dearly. My father-in-law from my first marriage was much the same, albeit with an air of childish petulence. We didn't always see eye-to-eye - rarely, in fact - but we got on well enough. Eddie Connolly is a charicature, certainly, but one rooted in reality. I get the feeling that when our esteemed host says "cartoon", he actually means "caricature". Not sure on spelling, so I've offered a couple of variables, there.
10: Love and Monsters 9: Fear Her 8: New Earth 7: Tooth and Claw 6: The Idiot’s Lantern 5: Rise of the Cyberman / Age of Steel 4: School Reunion 3: The Girl in the Fireplace 2: Army of Ghosts / Doomsday 1: The Impossible Planet / The Satan Pit
@@anamewithaperson8636 haha, my first is probably my dad telling me about it and putting the first episode of new who on, talking about how passionately he loved it when he was younger.
I love School Reunion. It reminded me how much I love Sarah-Jane Smith with Pertwee and Baker, and I even watched a few of the Sarah-Jane Adventures episodes as a result. Her character is a little different, but the heart seemed to still be there, and that was the key for me. I think Girl in the Fireplace is excellent, along with The Impossible Planet and The Satan Pit are amazing. And I really like the final two parter. I actually think it's my favourite of the RTD finale's. It was bitter-sweet. It had some nice payoff to the family stuff in the series. I actually liked Jackie in it. The one I watch most is School Reunion. I think it has to be my favourite of series 2. For its flaws, it was a love letter to fans of Classic Who, and cemented that this was a genuine continuation of all that had been before.
Nice list! Hear's mine :-) 10. Love and Monsters 9. The Idiot's Lantern 8. Tooth and Claw 7. Fear Her 6. New Earth 5. Rise of the Cybermen/The Age of Steel 4. School Reunion 3. Army of Ghosts/Doomsday 2. The Girl in the Fireplace 1. The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit
This season was my introduction to Doctor Who and I fell in love instantly! I couldn´t wait to see the next episode and I was so hyped that I loved all of them just because it was more Doctor Who. This season is so special to me and because of it I made so many friends online and... yeah, I think it means too much to me as a whole to go back and rate the single episodes.
I feel like the two parters in this series were amazing, the cybermen story included. I feel like those episodes were the highlight of this season, along with School reunion. The rest of the episodes were pretty meh imo.
My list: 10: fear her 9: love and monsters 8: New earth 7: The idiots lantern 6: Tooth and claw 5: Rise of the cyberman/ age of steel 4: School reunion 3: The girl in the fireplace 2: Army of ghosts/ doomsday 1: Impossible planet/ satins pit
Surprising myself completely, I am entirely in agreement with your top 10! I did not expect that! I really like The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit - for all the reasons you mentioned - but I have to blame it for my partner's obsession with Ood jokes. For weeks after we saw that episode, I had to suffer with the Ood jokes. And now, anytime we might catch a re-run of any episode with the Ood in it, i get bombarded with Ood jokes. Ach!
I think the reason for the rollercoaster of quality for Series 2 is RTD was trying to get his bearings working with Tennant. I hope Chibnall will give us something great for Series 12... one year from now.
10. The Idiot's Lantern (0/10) 9. Love and Monsters (2/10) 8. Fear Her (3.5/10) 7. Tooth and Claw (5/10) 6. New Earth (6.5/10) 5. Rise of the Cybermen/Age of Steel (16.5/20) 4. Army Of Ghosts/Doomsday (17/20) 3. The Girl in the Fireplace (8.5/10) 2. School Reunion (9/10) 1. The Impossible Planet/The Satan pit (18.5/20)
I wish Series 11 had high's like The Girl in the Fireplace, The Impossible Planet & The Satan Pit, School Reunion, and Army of Ghosts & Doomsday. I'd say 11's high's belong in the middle of your list with Tooth and Claw.
Clint Waltman agreed, I’ll take a bleh series like 11if there could just be some exciting great episodes, there were like 2 great ones but they didn’t feature the doctor much so I still don’t see her as s real character
Personally I adore Demons of the Punjab, but I agree Series 11’s other highs - Kerblam!, It Takes You Away, Rosa (ish) are still only good, elevated by the low quality surrounding them
@@jackrichardson7020 I'm with you on Demons, mate, it's just... for better or worse, it's not a "fun" watch like the ones in Season 2. This is a bit of a heavy analogy, but - to me - it's good like a movie such as 12 Years A Slave is. It's well-done and tasteful but also sad, a little depressing, and not something I'd casually revisit.
My List 10. Fear Her - D+ 9. The Idiot's Lantern - C 8. Love and Monsters - C+ 7. New Earth - C+ 6. Tooth and Claw - B- 5. Rise of the Cyberman/Age of Steel - B- 4. Army of Ghosts/Doomsday - B+ 3. School Reunion - A- 2. The Girl in the Fireplace - A+ 1. The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit - A+
If you love Anthony Head, there's also 'Doctor Who Confidential' a behind the scenes thing that ran with many of early seasons. He narrates on many (Simon Pegg, too) of those. Later cut, due for budgetary reasons. For me, yeah, Girl in the Fireplace would be top. I just loved the way the clockwork robots were realised.
My ranking of the Series 2 episodes & two-parters (is it just me or were the two-parters this series really strong?): 10. Fear Her 9. The Idiot's Lantern 8. New Earth 7. Tooth and Claw 6. Love and Monsters (I actually like this episode. In fact I think if it wasn't for the jarring effect of this coming off the heels of The Satan Pit tone wise I think it wouldn't be so hated) 5. Rise of the Cybermen & Age of Steel 4. Army of Ghosts & Doomsday (As someone who never was the biggest Cybermen fan, the battle between them and the Daleks is way too onesided. On top of the Cybermen in this story not being the versions in the proper Doctor Who universe fans wanted to see fight the Daleks kind of makes the confrontation awkward in hindsight.) 3. School Reunion 2. The Impossible Planet & The Satan Pit (What stops these episodes from being number one is the small bit at the end where the Doctor says, in his time traveling spaceship, that he didn't have time to save the Ood. I'm sorry but I always hate it whenever the person driving a time machine says "I don't have enough time to do all of this!") 1. The Girl in the Fireplace
I can see why you ranked the episodes the way you did, but I would still put Love and Monsters at the bottom. I agree that Fear Her is the Tsuranga Conundrum of the season, which is why both are second from the bottom for their respective seasons in my rankings (the bottom for season 11 being Arachnids in the UK). Girl in the Fireplace for me is #1 though, because for me it *did* have that emotional punch. Closely followed by the finale, which still has that punch, but isn't quite as tightly written.
My List- 10. Fear Her 9. Love & Monsters 8. The Idiot's Lantern 7. Tooth & Claw 6. New Earth 5. Rise Of The Cybermen/Age Of Steel 4. Girl In The Fireplace 3. School Réunion 2. The Impossible Planet/Satan Pit 1. Army Of Ghosts/Doomsday
Bad: 10. Fear Her (2/10) 9. Love and Monsters (2/10) 8. The Idiot’s Lantern (3.5/10) Average: 7. New Earth (4.5/10) 6. Tooth and Claw (6/10) Good: 5. Rise of the Cybermen/Age of Steel (8/10) 4. School Reunion (8.5/10) Great: 3. Army of Ghosts/Doomsday (9/10) 2. The Girl in the Fireplace (9.5/10) 1. The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit (10/10)
My ranking 11. Fear Her 10. The Idiot’s Lantern 9. New Earth 8. Tooth and Claw 7. The Christmas Invasion 6. Love & Monsters 5. Rise of the Cybermen/The Age of Steel 4. School Reunion 3. Army of Ghosts/Doomsday 2. The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit 1. The Girl In The Fireplace
I think I've come to the conclusion (although I love some of the episodes) that while I like the 10th Doctor and I like Rose. I don't like them together & the way they act together. I much prefer Rose with Nine and Ten with Donna. I hated the way Rose's presence haunted the next series (I liked the way future Doctors, like Eleven in The Snowmen, would have an episode or so to deal with the loss of the companion but then move on.) and then when she kept popping up in Series 4 I got so annoyed that when the previews had her showing up in the last few episodes I actually stopped watching the show til Series 5 came along.
StreetNoise agreed. 9 and Rose felt like best mates but Rose brought out all the worst qualities in 10. I also hate how 10 getting over Rose ruined Martha’s character - she had so much potential
@@jackrichardson7020 I liked Rose with 10 although I agree that he was best with Donna, but I agree so much with how she ruined Martha. I wouldn't even mind if the Doctor took a few moments here and there to mourn past companions, it could be touching and a nice moment, but with the way series 3 started with the Doctor refusing to accept that Martha was a companion and so many things reminding him of Rose and Martha even leaving because she felt like a third wheel to the Doctor and Rose while Rose wasn't even there! It felt like the relationship dynamic between the Doctor and Martha was built around Rose and it was such a disservice to her character. How am I supposed to think of her as a completely separate companion when the show is constantly telling me yeah Martha just did that but how bout that Rose tho? Makes me angry, I feel like I was given a companion I could've really liked and every time I try to enjoy her the show made me take a step back.
@@nicolev.3532 Yeah. I really like the special connection the Doctor forms with his companions in the modern era but it's like Martha was robbed of that. They never should've had her have a crush on him which just made it worse. Even when she did the big speech when she left him at the end of the season I got nothing from Ten...it didn't feel like he cared or even particularly understood. I understand that when the show started it was really like Rose was the main character & her leaving the show was a big deal but they carried it too far & too long. Too bad Martha couldn't have some adventures with a different Doctor later on.
It's like Adric. Adric was good with the Fourth Doctor. But a lot of the issues people have didnt really start until he partnered up with the following iteration
My Ranking: 10. Fear Her 9. The Idiots Lantern 8. New Earth 7. Tooth and Claw 6. Love and Monsters (sue me) 5. School Reunion 4. Rise of the Cyberman/ Age of Steel 3. The Impossible Planet/ The Satan Pit 2. The Girl in the Fireplace 1. Army of Ghosts/ Doomsday
Personally: 10. Fear her 9. Idiots Lantern 8. Love and Monsters 7. New Earth 6. Tooth and Claw 5. School Reunion 4. Rise of the Cybermen/Age of Steel 3. Impossible Planet/Satan Pit 2. Girl in the Fireplace 1. Army of Ghosts/Doomsday
The Girl who Waited is my personal favourite story ever. I'll be really excited to see the review after what you had to say about Tom MacRae's other episode.
Always look forward to your Doctor Who content. Good stuff. I'm thinking of starting a Channel myself but the main issue I have is adhering to copyright laws when sourcing images. What sources do you use when creating your videos? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.
I think I'd have mine; 1. The Girl in the Fireplace 2. School Reunion 3. The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit 4. The Army of Ghosts/Doomsday 5. Tooth and Claw 6. Rise of the Cybermen/The Age of Steel 7. The Idiot's Lantern 8. Fear Her 9. New Earth 10. Love & Monsters
Totally agree with the bottom half, top half is a bit different. 10. Fear Her 9. The Idiots Lantern 8. Love and Monsters 7. New Earth 6. Tooth and Claw 5. Rise of the Cybermen/The Age of Steel 4. Army of Ghosts/Doomsday 3. School Reunion 2. The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit 1. The Girl in the Fireplace

Strangely, I find Love and Monsters one of the most entertaining episodes of the season to re-watch. I thought the interactions between Elton and Jackie were quite touching and gave some needed dimension to her character.
I will not rank the episodes but just give my opinion and how much i like them from 1-10 New Earth: I get where you comming from and I too think it just functional but i did have some fun with the episodes I really like the first part of it(before Cassandra) and yeah 7/10 Tooth and Claw: I had and really bad opinion on this episode in my mind but rewatching it I must admit that it is quite good and a lot of fun 7/10 School Reunion: I Really Like This Episode and the Idea of Sarah Jane never getting over the Doctor is very cheap but understandable K9 returning is quite nice I really love that the Doctor askes Sarah Jane if she wants to come with him again and she realises she doesn´t need him 9/10 The Girl in The Fireplace: I am a Fan of how they try to tell this story and the chemistry between the Doctor and Madame de Pompadour is really good, but i didn´t feel the emotional impact some people see in this and im not really a fan of this monsters but still its an good episode 8/10 Rise of the Cyberman/Age of Steel Average Episode I Like How They Bring the Cyberman Back I Like That Rose Lost Her Father and In The Paralelworld Jackie Dies thats and nice detail and helps in an later episode Mickey gets some action this is good 7/10 The Idiots Lantern It has some good ideas I Like The Villian in the first half. I think its okay for the family too be cartoonish at least it didn´t bothered me 6/10 The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit 10/10 I Love This Episode It is just great Love & Monster I really don´t like this episode i think it´s most of the time to stupid and too silly It´s really uncomfortable too wtch it but it has an intresting idea which is not acted out good 4/10 Fear her I don´t get the hate for this episode i had fun watching it and it may be not the best but The Doctor and Rose work good in here The Moster is okay The psiode is just okay 6/10 Army of Ghosts/Doomsday I really love this episode too I Like how the Daleks and Cyberman are fighting and dissing each other I Have an Emotional Impact in the End It´s just good 10/10
For me personally my favourite episodes from season 2 ranked from worst to best is 1. Girl in the fireplace 2. army of ghosts/doomsday 3. School reunion 4. Rise of the cybermen/the age of steel 5. Christmas invasion 6. New earth 7. The impossible planet/the Satan pit(I still can’t watch this episode without someone else) 8. The idiots lantern 9. Fear her 10. Love and monsters
13. The Idiot's Lantern 12. Love And Mosnters 11. Fear Her 10. Tooth And Claw 9. New Earth 8. Army Of Ghosts 7. School Reunion 6. The Girl In The Fireplace 5. The Impossible Planet 4. Rise Of The Cybermen 3. The Satan Pit 2. Doomsday 1. Age Of Steel
My ranking 1. The Impossible Planet / The Satan Pit 2. Army Of Ghosts / Doomsday 3. Rise Of The Cybermen / The Age Of Steel 4. The Girl In The Fireplace 5. School Reunion 6. Love And Monsters 7. New Earth 8. The Idiot's Lantern 8. Tooth And Claw 9. Fear Her
My ranking would be- 10. Love and monsters - The Abzorbaloff was just to cartoonish for Doctor Who 9. Fear her - Bland 8. The idiot’s lantern - It’s ok, although the Wire is annoying 7. New Earth - I think it’s almost to weird for the tenth Doctor’s first main episode 6. Tooth and claw - I enjoy this one 5. The girl in the fireplace - Pretty great and the Clockwork Droids look great 4. Army of ghosts/Doomsday - Another amazing finale from Russell T Davis 3. School reunion - Wonderful episode 2. Rise of the Cybermen/The age of steel - You could switch this around with the top spot for me 1. The impossible planet/The Satan pit - I love both of these two-parters, they’re just so epic Series 2 probably ranks maybe 4th or 5th spot on my new Who ranking
As a major astronomy geek, The Impossible Planet two-parter just pisses me off. It is *perfectly possible* to maintain a stable orbit around a black hole without being dragged into it in the real world. They aren’t cosmic vacuum cleaners, they’re cosmic *pot holes*-only dangerous if you get too close to the event horizon. Because of that, the whole premise of those episodes becomes ridiculous and cringeworthy to me. But, to each their own; I’m glad you enjoy those episodes, even though I don’t.
The black hole in the story is stated to be so big and massive that it is a cosmic vacuum cleaner - i.e. the event horizon is so expansive that the 'pot hole' is HUGE. I think the concept is that they are beyond the event horizon, But are still mai taini g stable orbit. Maybe something else invalidates the sci-fi but i dont know
I have similar issues holding a degree in that area... and I love that you use the same term I previously used in my planetarium shows to mock sci-fi portrayals of them. "cosmic vacuum cleaners" :D
I have a similar issue but I'm able to brush these things off and enjoy the drama and tension of the story. There's some excellent dialogue between the doctor and Ida too, which is one of the high points for me. Interestingly with regards to scientific knowledge marring enjoyment of an otherwise excellent doctor who story, I remember being slightly annoyed by the "widen the parameters to include all life" of silence in the library. Bacteria are literally everywhere. So if you widened the parameters it wouldn't actually be that surprising if you got such a large number of lifeforms. But again I'm able to brush it off and enjoy the story for what it is (eg. fucking amazing actually). Bad science happens in sci fi all the time. I try not to let it get in the way of enjoying a good story.
I think the thing with idiot's lantern is, that whatever it's flaws, I was too terrified of the wire at the time to really notice. She was really scary to 9 year old me.
The Daleks and Cybermen may have appeared in some of the same stories back during the 1963-69 series, but never shared to much as one frame of film together until Army of Ghosts/Doomsday. For this reason alone this story is not only my favorite series two episode, but in my Top Ten list of all-time greatest Doctor Who stories!! (edited to correct misspellings)

I’d probably go with 10. The idiot’s lantern 9. Fear Her (I don’t hate this episode as much as you did, it had an emotional impact for me but it was very boring) 8. Love and monsters 7. Tooth and Claw (it’s been a while since I saw it but I don’t like DW trying to fool me and I don’t like this whole Victorian thing period unless we’re explicitly dealing with aliens) 6. Rise of the Cybermen/Age of Steel 5. New Earth (I liked it quite a bit more than you did but I can’t in good conscience rate it higher) 4. School Reunion (I did not like dw feeling like Buffy) 3. The Girl in the Fireplace 2. Army of Ghosts/Doomsday 1. The Impossible Planet/Satan’s Pit
I have watched every Doctor first run, even the radio play "The time traveler and the schoolgirl" by Sydney Newman. But to judge any show or cast you must take into account what was available and budget of the time.

The Christmas Invasion 4. Rise of the Cybermen/The Age of Steel 3. The Impossible Planet/The Pit 2. The Girl in the Fireplace 1. Army of Ghosts/Doomsday
This is pretty similar to how I would rank this series, though I flip back and forth between "Fear Her" and "The Idiot's Lantern" as which is worse. As for "Love and Monsters", while I don't really like it, it must be said it that it does not deserve the hate it's gotten. Part of the reason it gets flack from fans I think is because it's a reflection on them and how being obsessed with the Doctor is kinda dorky. There's also the fact that the Doctor/Rose are barely in it, but then again, that's also true for "Blink", and that's a bona fide classic. Of all things, I actually think it's got the most in common with "Rosa" from series 11 in that it's not really an episode of Doctor Who in terms of its approach and formula. Granted, that one had a lot more weight and took its situation more seriously, whereas "Love and Monsters" is clearly going for comedy. I think that's why the ending doesn't really work. It's not the fact that the villain looks ridiculous. Again, comedy, it's supposed to be silly. But it's the fact that his power is actually quite dark and sinister when you think about it. It's the abrupt tone shifts that drag it down more than anything in my opinion. Anyhoo, good list, Satan Pit is still epic as hell and glad to see it top the list!
1) School Reunion- Sarah Jane, K9 and Mr Finch. Enough said. 2) Impossible Planet/ Satan Pit- Really good, don't love it as much as some others but I recognize how great it is. 3) Girl in the Fireplace- Fun, with a real gut punch at the end. 4) Rise of Cybermen/ Age of Steel- Pretty good, just hate the delete catchphrase 5) Army of Ghosts/Doomsday- bit of a mixed bag. 6) Tooth and Claw- Stupid opening aside, Queen Victoria is good and the soundtrack is great. 7) Love and Monsters- I kinda like this one... No idea why. 8) New Earth- ending is nice... 9) Fear her- just dumb and boring. 10) Idiots Lantern- I hate this, I hate this, I hate this.
I have a bigger interest watching this one, I love series 2, it's my favourite series (mainly because it's the first series I watched when it was originally on, I like all episodes It's in my opinion when new who was at Its peak
10) Fear Her 9) Love and Monsters 8) New Earth 7) The Idiots Lantern 6) Tooth and Claw 5) School Reunion 4) Rise of the Cybermen/ Age of Steel 3) Army of Ghosts/ Doomsday 2) Girl in the Fireplace 1) The Impossible/ The Satan Pit I find this series incredibly underrated and love it however I will agree it is very uneven, the bottom 3 are some of the weakest of RTDs era however the top 3 are some of the best imo.
I do tend to forget Fear Her exists, and when I remember, it's associated with some pretty unpleasant images, so that may be why. We're pretty much in sync on Idiot's Lantern - it has its moments, but it's not all that great. I also come down on the side of being against unearned forgiveness, for reasons. I don't dislike Love and Monsters as much as most, but when I think about it, I'm left with a cold and sad impression. Definitely not a happy episode. I'm kind of meh on New Earth, definitely prefer Gridlock when it comes to the cat people. I like Tooth and Claw well enough - particularly Tennant's natural accent and the establishment of Torchwood, but the whole thing with Rose trying to get the Queen to say "we are not amused" rubs me the wrong way. I'm not as on board with Impossible Planet/Satan Pit as you are, but I'm overdue for a rewatch, so it may rise in my ranking. I do get your special connection, given that this was your First Episode, and I'm quite fond of Ida as well. The Girl in the Fireplace has emotional resonance and I quite enjoy the baroque steampunk aesthetic of the clockwork men, but ultimately there're other episodes I like better. I'm totally into the whole parallel world angle of Rise of the Cybermen/Age of Steel. I like Mrs. Moore quite a lot, really enjoy Mickey's first steps in taking a level in badass and Rose/Pete's interactions. I am still miffed at the scene establishing Ricky and Jake as being lovers/partners being cut, but that's a personal nitpick. School Reunion - I agree, Anthony Stuart Head was brilliant, but that's true of him in general. Sarah Jane was My First Companion, so this has a lot of nostalgic emotional resonance with me, and K9's sacrifice breaks my heart. Also, Mickey realizing he's The Tin Dog, setting in motion his future course of action. There're only two things keeping it from being my #1: Sarah Jane's whole "I never found anyone who could measure up" bit, it just isn't in character for her. And this was the beginning of Rose's Miss Jealousy attitude toward the existence of other Companions, which I always found extremely offputting. And that leaves Army of Ghosts/Doomsday as my top episodes. Love Mickey's return, love the Dalek/Cybermen trash talking, extra love Jackie & Pete. It's not a perfect story by any means, but it ticks enough of my emotional boxes that it takes the gold. Still glad he didn't say it. Huh - I thought I wasn't going to be able to rank these, but I guess I did after all.
Worst to best Fear her (worst who story until Moffat era for me) Idiots lantern Love & Monsters (I actually liked this on rewatching it, it’s messy but kinda goofy fun) Tooth & Claw (just never did it for me) New Earth (idk I just like it) Army of ghosts (wasn’t that into the set up until incredible cliffhanger) Rise of the Cybermen (should swap titles with the second part) School reunion (I can see why it’s higher for others but just doesn’t do it for me as much as for others, but still excellent) Age Steel (it’s pretty epic imao, and shit ton of fun) Doomsday (great, but the ending undeniably elevates it) Impossible Planet/Satan pit (holds up so well and is superior to my memory of it the first time round) Girl in the fireplace (this is 100% due to nostalgia, this was my first who episode ever and I fell in love with it immediately, the elegance and ease with which the story flows. I put this one on to remind me that Moffat despite his short comings is an amazing writer.)
I wouldn't have put Fear Her at the bottom, just because it has some of the greatest Doctor and Rose bits in the entire run. They are so tight here! I mean, a lot of the other elements are clumsy as heck but I can't hate it because of how well those two play off of each other. I think my least favorite out of two is Tooth and Claw. Nothing worked for me. Well, except David's accent, but nothing else.

Is it wrong of me to say that I didn’t enjoy Series 2 as much as I enjoyed Series 1? Perhaps it was because I felt 9 should have had this arc. Don’t get me wrong there were some good episodes for 10, particularly the finale, but mostly everything before that I wish Christopher Eccleston stayed. Once 10 lost Rose I thought his journey began. He had burden. He had something clinging to his two hearts that made him the person he becomes in his later two seasons and the specials.
my ranking :) Tooth And Claw The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit The Girl In The Fireplace School Reunion Army Of Ghosts/Doomsday The Idiot's Lantern Rise Of The Cybermen/Age Of Steel New Earth Love And Monsters Fear Her
I found the comparison to season 11 interesting. I stopped watching NuWho after season 2 and didn't return until the next Doctor arrived. I suspect I might have done the same for the current Doctor, but I have enjoyed later Tennent in rewatchs so maybe unlike then, I'll stick around this time and wait for an improvement.
Series 2 is definitely the weakest of the RTD-era. The two-parters are fine, but most of the single episodes fall flat. Here's my ranking 1. Army of Ghosts/Doomsday 2. Rise of the Cybermen/The Age of Steel 3. The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit 4. Love & Monsters (yes, I actually like it!) 5. School Reunion 6. The Girl in the Fireplace 7. Tooth & Claw 8. New Earth 9. The Idiot's Lantern 10. Fear Her
Love & Monsters is at least memorable (for better or worse!) and has its fans, apparently. Fear Her was an emergency script because Stephen Fry was writing an episode but had to pull out.
My ranking 10 love and monsters my most hated episodes 9 fear her 8 the idiots lantern 7 new earth 6 tooth and claw 5 army of ghosts and doomsday 4 the girl in the fireplace 3 rise of the cyberman and age of Steel 2 school reunion 1 the impossible planet and the satan pit
Tennant's weakest season as a whole ... But still had some truly epic high points, and it was the starting point for Tennant's golden run through season's 3 and 4, when things were mostly awesome! This season was all about making sure the change of main actor didn't ruin the momentum of the show, and Tennant's quality made sure of that ... He and Piper had terrific chemistry together, and i'll always wish they had been together a bit longer. Good memories and the start of better things to come ...
Unpopular opinion: The only reason Blink is considered such a classic (besides a really cool (for now) new villain) is because it's a better version of Love and Monsters.
@@CouncilofGeeksBoth are the episodes that they decided to focus on the impact of the Doctor Who universe on ordinary people rather than how the companion and Doctor react to the Doctor Who universe at large. Both tried to make you feel connected to one off characters so that you would feel the impact for close friends and love interests when they inevitably die. Love and Monsters decided to go with people who followed The Doctor like a fandom, while Blink decided to have people follow the Doctor more like a conspiracy theory or a cryptid. Sally ended up being a more compelling character than Elton and the Weeping Angels a more compelling villain than the Abzorbaloff, but the premises are pretty much the same. Because it is a break from formula and acts more as a mini movie set inside the Doctor Who universe rather than a Doctor Who story, Blink often gets cited as a must watch for new watchers. The only thing in even a slight comparison to the type of episode Blink is, is Love and Monsters. When comparing the two episodes, one is easily made a classic in comparison to the other. That's not to say that Blink isn't good, I just think it is overrated in comparison to better episodes throughout the series.
Doctor Who: The only show where a future hospital full of cat nun's and a human trampoline taking over bodies is "Kind of bland".
I may not have said it on the episode but in the episode with elton, the paper the monster is reading has the first mention of mr saxon

I really liked Tooth and Claw but the ninja stuff at the beginning was so bizzare
I feel like in an episode like this where they were trapped in close quarters, the old men being the strong and silent type and just having an intimidating presence would've been more effective than that cartoonish kung fu movie stuff.
@@nicolev.3532 Yeah. And I really like most of the stuff in that episode but that definitely would have worked better
Not just the weakest of the 10th Doctor series, but the weakest of the RTD era in general imo. It has some real moments of brilliance though.
The thing I like most about New Earth is the set up for Gridlock.
Funny how I enjoyed New Earth much more than Gridlock at the time, should rewatch them at some point.
I don't really like either of them to be honest. I prefer Gridlock but I don't particularly enjoy either.
I love gridlock it would probably be on my top ten of all time!
I love Gridlock, it's one of my comfort food episodes. It needs a bit more love than it gets I think
Unpopular opinion: I didn't think Fear Her was that bad? It's definitely not good, but I don't understand all the "it's the worst episode" stuff ...
TsukiKabanoki exactly same, it wasn’t great but it was kind of fun. I don’t understand where all of the hate comes from.
TsukiKabanoki I’m curious to what episode you think is bad then lol
@@andrewbowman4611 Said it much better then I could there. I suppose as a non-British person I must be harder to empathise with the character.

I despise Tooth & Claw, maybe I’m in the minority here, but I think its way worse than New Earth
My personal ranking - it’s quite controversial I think 😂:
10)Love and Monsters
9)Idiots lantern
8)Rise of Cyberman/Age of steel
7)New Earth
6)Fear her
5)Army of Ghosts/Doomsday
4)Impossible Plant/Satan Pit
3)Tooth and Claw
2)School Reunion
1)The Girl in the Fireplace
Strangely, I find Love and Monsters one of the most entertaining episodes of the season to re-watch. I thought the interactions between Elton and Jackie were quite touching and gave some needed dimension to her character.
I will not rank the episodes but just give my opinion and how much i like them from 1-10
New Earth: I get where you comming from and I too think it just functional but i did have some fun with the episodes I really like the first part of it(before Cassandra) and yeah 7/10
Tooth and Claw: I had and really bad opinion on this episode in my mind but rewatching it I must admit that it is quite good and a lot of fun 7/10
School Reunion: I Really Like This Episode and the Idea of Sarah Jane never getting over the Doctor is very cheap but understandable K9 returning is quite nice I really love that the Doctor askes Sarah Jane if she wants to come with him again and she realises she doesn´t need him 9/10
The Girl in The Fireplace: I am a Fan of how they try to tell this story and the chemistry between the Doctor and Madame de Pompadour is really good, but i didn´t feel the emotional impact some people see in this and im not really a fan of this monsters but still its an good episode 8/10
Rise of the Cyberman/Age of Steel Average Episode I Like How They Bring the Cyberman Back I Like That Rose Lost Her Father and In The Paralelworld Jackie Dies thats and nice detail and helps in an later episode Mickey gets some action this is good 7/10
The Idiots Lantern It has some good ideas I Like The Villian in the first half. I think its okay for the family too be cartoonish at least it didn´t bothered me 6/10
The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit 10/10 I Love This Episode It is just great
Love & Monster I really don´t like this episode i think it´s most of the time to stupid and too silly It´s really uncomfortable too wtch it but it has an intresting idea which is not acted out good 4/10
Fear her I don´t get the hate for this episode i had fun watching it and it may be not the best but The Doctor and Rose work good in here The Moster is okay The psiode is just okay 6/10
Army of Ghosts/Doomsday I really love this episode too I Like how the Daleks and Cyberman are fighting and dissing each other I Have an Emotional Impact in the End It´s just good 10/10
For me personally my favourite episodes from season 2 ranked from worst to best is
1. Girl in the fireplace

3. School reunion
4. Rise of the cybermen/the age of steel
5. Christmas invasion

4. The Girl In The Fireplace
5. School Reunion
6. Love And Monsters
7. New Earth
8. The Idiot's Lantern
8. Tooth And Claw
9. Fear Her
My ranking would be-
10. Love and monsters - The Abzorbaloff was just to cartoonish for Doctor Who
9. Fear her - Bland
8. The idiot’s lantern - It’s ok, although the Wire is annoying
7. New Earth - I think it’s almost to weird for the tenth Doctor’s first main episode
6. Tooth and claw - I enjoy this one
5. The girl in the fireplace - Pretty great and the Clockwork Droids look great
4. Army of ghosts/Doomsday - Another amazing finale from Russell T Davis
3. School reunion - Wonderful episode
2. Rise of the Cybermen/The age of steel - You could switch this around with the top spot for me
1. The impossible planet/The Satan pit - I love both of these two-parters, they’re just so epic
Series 2 probably ranks maybe 4th or 5th spot on my new Who ranking
As a major astronomy geek, The Impossible Planet two-parter just pisses me off. It is *perfectly possible* to maintain a stable orbit around a black hole without being dragged into it in the real world. They aren’t cosmic vacuum cleaners, they’re cosmic *pot holes*-only dangerous if you get too close to the event horizon. Because of that, the whole premise of those episodes becomes ridiculous and cringeworthy to me.
But, to each their own; I’m glad you enjoy those episodes, even though I don’t.
You have the burden of knowledge. I am not so encumbered.
"cosmic vacuum cleaners" :D
but I still appreciate the episode for its horror elements.

4. School Reunion (I did not like dw feeling like Buffy)
3. The Girl in the Fireplace
2. Army of Ghosts/Doomsday
1. The Impossible Planet/Satan’s Pit

7. New Earth
6. Tooth and Claw
5. Rise of the Cybermen/Age of Steel
4. Army of Ghosts/Doomsday

Hey! Hey! Hey! Am I detecting sass against the cat-nuns again!? This abuse needs to stop! You better not bring this back up in Gridlock!
P.S. Also, too bad that you couldn't see the good Points of Fear Her. It's not the best, but it's also not the worst.

James Carp I agree with quite a lot of this however - did you really just put the Christmas invasion above School Reunion?? xx
4) Rise of Cybermen/ Age of Steel- Pretty good, just hate the delete catchphrase
5) Army of Ghosts/Doomsday- bit of a mixed bag.
Very similar to your list. I'd probably move Girl in the Fireplace up to second place though.
100% agreed with this list especially the last two, my all time favourite doctor whos
I have a bigger interest watching this one, I love series 2, it's my favourite series (mainly because it's the first series I watched when it was originally on, I like all episodes
It's in my opinion when new who was at Its peak
10) Fear Her
9) Love and Monsters
8) New Earth
7) The Idiots Lantern
6) Tooth and Claw
5) School Reunion
4) Rise of the Cybermen/ Age of Steel
3) Army of Ghosts/ Doomsday
2) Girl in the Fireplace
1) The Impossible/ The Satan Pit
I find this series incredibly underrated and love it however I will agree it is very uneven, the bottom 3 are some of the weakest of RTDs era however the top 3 are some of the best imo.
Worst to best
Fear her (worst who story until Moffat era for me)
Idiots lantern
Love & Monsters (I actually liked this on rewatching it, it’s messy but kinda goofy fun)
Tooth & Claw (just never did it for me)
New Earth (idk I just like it)
Army of ghosts (wasn’t that into the set up until incredible cliffhanger)
Rise of the Cybermen (should swap titles with the second part)
School reunion (I can see why it’s higher for others but just doesn’t do it for me as much as for others, but still excellent)
Age Steel (it’s pretty epic imao, and shit ton of fun)
Doomsday (great, but the ending undeniably elevates it)
Impossible Planet/Satan pit (holds up so well and is superior to my memory of it the first time round)
Girl in the fireplace (this is 100% due to nostalgia, this was my first who episode ever and I fell in love with it immediately, the elegance and ease with which the story flows.
Well, except David's accent, but nothing else.
i'd have gone for
1 the impossible planet/the satan pit
2 school reunion
3 the girl in the fireplace
4 army of ghosts/doomsday
5 the idiot's lantern
6 fear her
7 love and monsters
8 rise of the cybermen/ the age of steel
9 new earth
10 tooth and claw
The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit is the best episode of Doctor Who (old and new)
I do like those episodes but personally I'd say Silence/Forest was better.
@@RichardM-kv4uu Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead is my second favourite episode.
My list wasn’t too dissimilar to yours...

@@No1ShalkaFan It's great
@@Faerie_Kim it's not, it's shit, it should be number 10
@@No1ShalkaFan that's your opinion. I disagree with it.

I actually like fear her because it was the first doctor who episode I saw
I loved idiots lantern and fear her , I think there underrated asf
Did anyone else think he forgot to hit record on the camera and the mic quality was garbage for like 3 seconds before the video kicked in?
Is it wrong of me to say that I didn’t enjoy Series 2 as much as I enjoyed Series 1? Perhaps it was because I felt 9 should have had this arc. Don’t get me wrong there were some good episodes for 10, particularly the finale, but mostly everything before that I wish Christopher Eccleston stayed. Once 10 lost Rose I thought his journey began. He had burden. He had something clinging to his two hearts that made him the person he becomes in his later two seasons and the specials.
my ranking :)

Here's my ranking
1. Army of Ghosts/Doomsday
2. Rise of the Cybermen/The Age of Steel
3. The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit
4. Love & Monsters (yes, I actually like it!)
5. School Reunion

Fifth & Claw/ Sixth & Claw
Twelfth & Claw/ Clawsday
Newth & Claw
Threeth & Claw

Eleventh & Claw
They got love and monsters right in season 3 with blink
Love & Monsters is at least memorable (for better or worse!) and has its fans, apparently. Fear Her was an emergency script because Stephen Fry was writing an episode but had to pull out.

It is weird the difference in opinions as Idiots Lantern is one of my favourite episodes in New Who.
Girl in the fireplace was brilliant right up until the end, it seemed pointless having her die.
Quality video
Unpopular opinion: The only reason Blink is considered such a classic (besides a really cool (for now) new villain) is because it's a better version of Love and Monsters.
Care to elaborate, or is it just because it’s a Doctor-Lite episode?
