Personally, I kinda like the regeneration from Seven to Eight. Think about it, the Seventh Doctor spend his existence as this grand Chessmaster, manipulating his friends and enemies like pawns on a cosmic chessboard. And then he gets taken out in a random act of violence. You gotta love the irony.
The concept of his death is not the problem, the issue is the execution is out of character. They Serously expect us to belive he wouldn't so much as check the scanners? A better way to do this would be if he was killed once he got a significant distance away from the tardis. Or alternatively start in the middle of an adventure and have him randomly encounter the thugs after having been on earth for a while and being unable to get out of the situation. The same concept and the same irony would be present, but this way it would be much more in line with his character.
I thought 12's speech was pretty generic and corny tbh, especially the "children can see my name in the stars" stuff. I think Moffat wanted to get all the whimsy out of his system before it was too late.
@@FortoFight I'm not saying it was the most original Doctor's speech ever. But for me, this line is a very useful guideline for my daily dealings with people. Just imagine let's say the internet with everyone actually trying to be nice, not failing to be kind... Call my corny, but I think I'd like that quite a lot.
@@joepegel Not that we often saw 12 laughing very hard, or running very fast (didn't Clara say something about penguins one day? Or was that in a behind the scenes? ... Still great words!
One other thing about regeneration 9-10: the writers had to show new viewers, people who weren’t born during the Classic era, this unique capacity of the classic character. So they had to explain the concept, then show it with contemporary technology. It was well carried out.
I think what also makes Davison's great is how after all the companions show up as visions to compel him to regenerate, a vision of Anthony Ainley's Master shows up telling him to die. You could almost argue it's The Master taunting him that gets him to regenerate. Not allowing himself to die to spite The Master.
my favourite regeneration is 12 to 13 and that's mainly because 12's last words were "laugh hard, run fast, be kind" and how much 13 seems to embody those words, she wants to be happy and wants to have friends and have fun. the doctor came a long way from being the soldier whose willing to do anything to stop the war. plus it helps that Peter Capaldi is an amazing actor and watching his regeneration scene makes me tear up every time.
Harry Willmore He blew himself up, and if she tried to help him with the time remaining it would’ve killed everyone else in the room with him. That’s understandable. Her wanting the big spiders to get tortured underneath their own weight for hours or days to death is WAY worse.
@@UltimateKyuubiFox honestly the whole thing with the spiders was weird i tried to think about it and maybe she wanted to let the spiders die naturally rather than killing them (?) idk
I think Tennant’s tantrum is a look into the doctors arrogance and a window into 10s darker side. He appears the most human and compassionate version of the Dr but he has this arrogance and self importance bubbling under the surface. This side of him came out rarely in his era such as in The Waters of Mars but I think it’s an interesting dissection of the character
9th Doctor's- Lasts like 5 minutes 10th Doctor's- Lasts about 20 minutes 11th Doctor's- Lasts like 15 minutes 12th Doctor's- Stretched out through 2 different episodes, one of which is a full hour long
I love the light in your eyes and your big smile on the top 3 entries. It's passion and love like that, that really makes me love this show and Fandom.
I like 11 into 12. The little speech he makes. About us all changing and change being good but not forgetting all the people you used to be. It resonates with me becasue i have been through a lot over the last few years in my life and i am a very different person to who i was say 6 years ago. So that speech speaks to me on a personal level.
Hi, maybe its a little off topic, but I would like to thank you for your videos, currently I'm living alone far away from home and it's not a very good time to me now, I heve recrntly lose someone very precuious to me and for the mayority of the day I can cope by being arond people at work, but when I'm alone at home I can be very challenging to do anything, listenig a familiar voice has become a comfort to me, so I wanted to thank you for being that conforting voice.
There is one regeneration that activly brings me to tears. Bye bye Matt Smith such a great goodbye such a loving tribute to Eleven's time as the Doctor a brilliant farewell to Amelia. I'll happily admit Im writing this before the Video ends and I hope that its #1 but its my Favourite
@@pious83 As well as cashing in on ER, I think the reason why there are actual doctors in the TV movie is so they could basically go, "these may be doctors, but he is _the_ Doctor. The definite article, you might say."
As much as I didn't much like Colin Baker or McCoy, I feel bad that neither of them got proper sendoffs since they didn't know they were finished at the time of their last story.
I thought Tennant's regeneration felt very vain. The time when his time came to an end, it felt correct. I did not feel sadness, it felt the Doctor was going to right his sins. Maybe the 10th Doctor is getting transformed into the Master. Time Lord Victorious. Infinite potential. Corrupting timeline. In a Christmas special, he said something along the lines that if he could choose whom to save he'll be a monster. Now, it's the abyss staring back and he realized he must end this regeneration or he'll turn into something worse.
@@caleb7551 Or, or, he is clearly traumatized at having to cope with the fact that after all this incarnation has been through by this point, he knows that very soon his time is coming to an end, and some new man will just go off happy like it never happened.
I really like Smith's speech. I feel like Moffat, for all his faults, wrote incredible Doctor speeches in his day. But I like how it wasn't like Tennant's regen nor was Capaldi's. I really prefer the way Moffat did the regenerations.
My top 13 Regeneration sequences are: 1. Peter Capaldi to Jodie Whittaker (This one broke me the most!) 2. Matt Smith to Peter Capaldi 3. William Hartnell to Patrick Troughton 4. Tom Baker to Peter Davison 5. Peter Davison to Colin Baker 6. Christopher Eccleston to David Tennant 7. Jon Pertwee to Tom Baker 8. Paul McGann to John Hurt 9. Patrick Troughton to Jon Pertwee 10. David Tennant to Matt Smith 11. John Hurt to Christopher Eccleston 12. Sylvester McCoy to Paul McGann 13. "Colin Baker" to Sylvester McCoy
You have to listen to Big Finish "The last adventure" its five hours 6th vs Valeyard and they did a propper regeneration for Colin Baker. Hearing that still tears me up. The 6th Docter is soooo well done in the Audios and in last adventure, he got a regeneration right on spot. Also watch the fanmade video on yt "6th Doctor regeneration last adventur" its so well done. For Capaldi, the part with "Children can hear your name" Capaldi was asked on Comic Con by a lil boy whats the Doctors name was. Capaldi beein great with fans, told him that exact speech. He wanted to keep it in the regeneration. lovly Easter-Egg btw every modern Doctor-Regeneration has a line that wasnt in the script, but said by the actors, what they wanna say. McGann "physician heal yourself" Ecclstones (you were fantastic) "and so was I" Tennant "I dont want to go" Smith "I will always remember, when the Doctor was me" Capadi "Children can hear your name....."
Pretty sure "I don't want to go" was scripted, there's behind the scenes of Tennant delivering the line in different emotional states, and I can't see Russell letting Ten's final line be "You're going to have a great year."
@@Deathlygunn you are right...well maybe it was bad from my side...of corse its in the script, but the actors had the freedom to put some words of their own into the regeneration. Tannent was the one who wanted to leave the show but the "I dont want to go" was fitting to the "I could have done so much more" after he rescued Wilf.
@@Deathlygunn Yes. It was. That Confidential was one of the only few available for purchase on Amazon (I think it still is) after they started purging UA-cam of all the Confidentials and I've watched it dozens of times. The lines between show and reality got pretty blurred in there, but "I don't want to go" was scripted. I don't think David ever ad-libbed in Doctor Who.
@Thomas Nieswandt While the actor may have some freedom in what and how they say it when delivering the line, they still don't get the final say on if it makes it to the episode. That largely comes down to the director and editor and they will use the one they want. Personally, I liked his last line, it fitted the journey his incarnation had been through and I agree that it fits the line you mention. It's worth bearing in mind too that while Tennant had decided to leave, he has said that he had doubts over it, after he'd decided to go.
I honestly have Capaldi's regeneration into Jodi as my number one, because i've always taken it as, because he's an old man, he sees the future in children and he sees them being kind and living up to his namesake, it reinvigorates him to do the same.
The 'I Don't Want to Go' moment did have a plus side - The callback to it used to devastating effect in 'An Adventure in Space and Time'. Now THAT moment induces tears every time.
I can understand, but as someone who was getting a bit bored of the 'throw arms back and shoot out sparkly energy' to see Matt suddenly change into Capaldi was quite refreshing. And we did see his big show beforehand, it would have been awful to sit through him destroying Dalek ships *and* a long regeneration.
Come on man. It acts as rtd and david tennant's goodbye not necessarily the doctor's, so to say that the only good part of it is a reference back to it is pretty disrespectful if anything.
The size of the 10/11 regeneration was huge because at the time 10 was massively loved and no one wanted him to go, the 10th doctor was a huge deal, so they wanted him to go out with a bang, with such a glorious feeling that it captured how fans felt, it also signifies the change of the show, it wasn't a regeneration of the Doctor, it was a regeneration of the whole show
You ranked Ten to Eleven low... If I ever meet you, I'm going to kiss you lol you nailed every one of my issues with the scene and with Ten in general. He was an immature man-child who couldn't grapple with reality. Eleven was a man-child, but he had a level of maturity to him that Ten didn't. And Nine was immature, but he handled his regeneration with class and bravery. Ten was a baby about it all the way up to his Very. Last. Moment. People will disagree, I'm sure, but I'm totally with you on the placement.
I can see why you don't like Tennant's, but it's personally my favourite. His rant, I think can be explained by the fact he was only ten for 6 years. I do like him seeing his companions as well.
Great list, even though we have some key differences (I quite like 4 into 5 for example). 6 into 7 was horrible and I felt so bad for Colin. I'm glad he's still a part of the fandom and is involved with the show but that was handled terribly. I HATED that hissy fit by 10. It was extremely annoying and it seriously lowered my opinion of that incarnation. The whole; 'I don't want to go!' was so whiny I was glad he was gone. He could've handled that so much better. 10 could be brilliant indeed and I first finally watched all of new Who I saw why people liked him so much as he was great early on but at the end there he became so irritating it was a relief when he left. I still enjoy 10's time overall despite the ending of his tenure. I loved how much better 11 handled it than 10 did and it's my favorite modern regen scene. And like you, I felt Time of the Doctor was not particularity good, but that end scene was done so well; touching without self-indulgence or melodrama, that's how it should be done. 3 into 4 was very touching. Sarah Jane Smith is still my number one companion and seeing that quiet moment was wonderful. While not a regen scene, it reminds me a lot of the end of The Green Death when Jo left. No over the top theatrics, just a quiet, tender moment that let's the viewer feel the emotion of the situation without clobbering us over the head with. I did like 9 into 10. The fantastic thing was pretty cool and he really didn't overdo it which was great. 5 into 6 was solid and I loved it too. Peri's confusion and Colin's remarks in Androzani were great fun.
Matt Smith was MY doctor. I loved him in every episode. A love almost all of his era episodes wise. And i love his regeneration speech but i HATE his actual regeneration its so quick just BANG. And i think everyone whos favourite doctor is Smiths its just a smack in the face. Not as long as tennants but like a good show of his regeneration energy and then Capaldi. Hell 3 seconds would be better than Smith throwing his head back. Cut. Then capaldi throws his head forwards. Such a dissapointment IMO
Talking about when the 11th Doctor sees a young Amelia Pond when he regenerates, shows that is how the 11th Doctor always saw Amy. In his eyes she was always the little girl that waited. When you look back at their time together, for me, it fits how he treated her. Which, I love.
Honestly, I prefer short and simple. "I don't wanna go." "A tear, Sarah Jane?" Are all much more meaningful to me than overblown pretentious speeches that go on way too long. I liked Capaldi's Doctor, and he did knock the speech out of the park, but I still didn't like it. To each their own. You don't know who the Sisterhood of Karn is??? You haven't got to 'The Brain of Morbius' in your classic series watch, then? I actually pretty much agree with your ranking of the regenerations. I would've put the Third Doctor's second, because his and the Fifth Doctor's are the only ones that I cried at but, again, to each their own.
06:16 "Something feels right about having at least one unspectacular, innocuous regeneration on the books" You mean 3: His exhaustion at the end of his first regeneration, his bumping his head on the console and him getting shot.
7s death is interesting because he was the master manipulator. He always planned ahead and yet didn't bother to check the scanner and just walked out into the gunfire. I think its fitting that his doctor would die from something simple and very human
I haven't heard 6's audio regeneration but apart from that I'll give it a go- 13. Six (at least his TV version) 12. Seven (as a huge McCoy fan and defender of the TV movie I HATE the way he goes) 11. War (not much here TBH) 10. Twelve (just a longer, duller repeat of Eleven's speech that is trying way to hard to make a general audience care about this Doctor the way they did the last two) 9. One (only high because of the impact) 8. Two (amazing story, but others are better) 7. Ten (overblown yes, but the emotion is still there) 6. Three (understated and underrated) 5. Eight (chills every time he names his BF companions) 4. Four (probably the best final line of any Doctor and beautiful music) 3. Nine (simple and wonderful) 2. Eleven (mixed story yes, but a perfect speech and music choice. Although he is my favourite so I'm a bit bias) 1. Five (iconic and genius)
I always felt each Doctor's regeneration speech was also meta: a message from the actor, or actor + showrunner, to the audience. I could go deeper into each one, but the two that stand out, to me, (IMO): 11th has one 4th wall breaking moment as he recites his last line: looking sideways into the camera he says "I will always remember when the Doctor was me". But the one that is meta at 3 different levels (who could have written it but Moffat) is 12th's: 1) It's Capaldi letting go of his childhood dream ("Doctor, I let you go") 2) A message from Moffat to the fandom addressing the "tense" (to put it mildly, I'm not touching that topic) relationship as both Doctor Who and Sherlock's showrunner: "Never be cruel, never be cowardly (...) Remember hate is always foolish and love is always wise (...) always try to be nice but never fail to be kind. Laugh hard. Run fast. Be kind" 3) Finally, it works as the passing of the torch to the new team. The part about children: it's just a reminder that the show was conceived as an educational show for kids. Kinda like George Lucas' reminding the fandom that Star Wars was made for 12-year-olds. It just sounds like a last-minute add, weirdly placed at the last minute, from a reshoot or something (a shame, because otherwise, I think it would have been a perfect speech). This is just my reading, don't hate me, I already have my comment hate quota filled by the SW fandom.
I had no problem with Ten to Eleven's whole "I don't want to go" thing but I'd still rank in fairly low. The goodbye tour was a bit too long but I can ignore that because of Wilf being in it. My issue with it is that it's the first of the copycat regens. It's essentially the same as Nine to Ten, when all previously seen regens had been different and it's been the same since then.
I didn’t like it for many reasons but the whole “I don’t wanna go” line is just poor, no doctor wants to go but they get on with it, Russel wrote it badly as the scene in the cafe badly explains regeneration and makes it out to be when the doctor regenerates he isn’t the same person, which is bull crap. Not to mention the awful scene where he’s like “I could do so much more” like what a selfish prick, and the last line sums up his doctor perfectly for me, unlikeable and selfish. All my opinion btw
@@EmpireEmployeeRick but he isn't the same person. And think about it, 1-7 regenerations happened to a barely conscious Doctor. 9's happened when he was trying to comfort Rose. He's clearly emotional but tries to make all these rapid fire jokes to lighten the mood. Then there's 10. Completely alone. Saw it coming. Radiation poisoning probably didn't help. The Oods too.
@Harry Willmore It means they used exactly the same regen fx and almost exactly the same pose as the last one. In the classic series each one was different in some notable way, even with the similarities. Since Ecclescake, they've all basically been exactly the same. Does that make sense?
Mine from best to worst: 1: 9th Doctor - 10th Doctor 2: 4th Doctor - 5th Doctor 3: 10th Doctor - 11th Doctor 4: 5th Doctor - 6th Doctor 5: 3rd Doctor - 4th Doctor 6: 1st Doctor - 2nd Doctor 7: 12th Doctor - 13th Doctor 8: 6th Doctor - 7th Doctor 9: 2nd Doctor - 3rd Doctor 10: 11th Doctor - 12th Doctor 11: 7th Doctor - 8th Doctor 12: War Doctor - 9th Doctor 13: 8th Doctor - War Doctor
well done my good man you got 1st place absolutely correct - The 5th Doctor into the 6th "is this death ?" "change my dear and it seems not a moment too soon" I love Caves of Andrazani and has such an epic ending ( :
I think this is one of the best ranked videos by you I've seen because your number one was so unexpected. I know you're not partial to either Doctor involved, yet it's your top pick because you thought it was the best. That's...kind of awesome.
4:10 I understand what you mean. I think 10 to 11 had a big emotional weight for some at the time because for a lot of viewers (including my then teenage self) David Tennant was THE Doctor. A lot of kids watching had never known another person in the role. Seeing him go was sad. Looking back on it, yeah its not that great, but at the time it was rather emotional.
Tenth will always be my doctor, but I won’t argue with you about your placement of his regeneration. I’ve always been bugged about the “I don’t want to go” bit. I don’t have a problem with the trip down memory lane, it wasn’t just Tennant that was leaving, it was also the showrunner and production staff so I don’t begrudge them giving themselves a pat on the back for a job well done. I don’t know for certain but there are parts of Capaldi’s speech that sound like he might have ad-libbed them, anyway he moves me every time. And Matt Smith looking directly at the camera...priceless. And I so wish we would get more of Paul McGann. He was so good in that short.
I know you a.) probably haven't seen it and b.) don't really count Big Finish, but The Sixth Doctor - The Last Adventure shows what led up to that regeneration and there's actually a decent reason why the regeneration went that way.
I think my favorite overall might be Nine's regeneration into Ten. It's relatively short and sweet, and I love how he tries to bring some humor into the situation despite being sad. Him sacrificing himself to save the person who opened up his hearts after the horror of the Time War also just felt appropriate to me. I have to admit I'm not huge on Eleven or Twelve's regenerations. Their speeches were nice, but I honestly don't care for big speeches ahead of regenerations. To me, it feels kind of awkward and inauthentic. Even more so than Ten's, which I will agree was self-indulgent --- but that simple, "I don't want to go," worked for me and very quickly summed up so much about what made Ten such a tragic version of the character. Thirteen's regeneration was beautifully done as well, imo. I haven't seen ALL the Classic regenerations yet, but of the ones I've seen, I definitely like Pertwee to Baker best. There was a certain poignance to it, but it wasn't overblown. The Second Doctor's regeneration also gets me, if for no other reason than that it's so traumatic and is forced on him.
I didn’t quite hate Ten’s regeneration in and of itself. It was self indulgent but it was at least somewhat justified. What I hate about it is the precedent it set for future regenerations. The idea that regeneration is like death and the next version is just someone else with your memories. The Tardis exploding because the doctor regenerated inside it. The protracted exploration of it. All of that was somewhat justified with Ten specifically but it carried over to all future regenerations in situations where it was not justified at all. Ten exploded cause he was releasing lethal amounts of nuclear radiation. What was Eleven’s excuse? Twelve? Eleven’s regeneration destroyed a Dalek mothership. How does that make sense. If every time lord was a thirteen use suicide bomber capable of taking out that big a target how did they ever lose the war? And all of that starts with Ten’s regeneration. I don’t hate it for what it is but for what it did.
With Eleven it could be because he was given a new cycle and there was excess energy. Twelve's is dumb though because being electrocuted by a Cyberman should not do THAT to the TARDIS.
I think that regeneration is destructive when it's being hold for too long, 10th and 12th both took a very long time before regenerating. For 11th it might be because there was excess energy with his new cycle, like Ben W said.
Miraculous Juju One held his regeneration from the midway point of Tenth Planet to the last few seconds of the final episode. That was three or four episode he was holding it. Not to mention there is a room in the Tardis specifically for difficult regenerations for exactly this reason. If as you say holding a regen makes it more destructive 10 and 12 should have known that and sought out the clean room instead of wandering around the engine room talking to themselves till they blew it up. More important though we should not have to be making up head canon for why the regenerations suddenly started getting super destructive and self indulgent. The answer is simple, it makes it easier for the new guy to redesign the Tardis and the old guy gets to spend several scenes going on about how grandiose and important the doctor that he created was.
Fun fact - who you’re seeing in the 6 to 7 regeneration is just Sylvester McCoy in a wig! And wouldn’t be the last Doctor to regenerate in a wig either.
I really think Capaldi's regeneration fits better into "the doctor falls" then 'twice upon a time", and knowing that Moffat only did it because Chibnall didn't intended to have a Christmas special makes me kind of bummed that it didn't happened the way it was intended in the S10 finale. I do like twice upon a time but the final moments of the doctor falls with Bill putting the doctor in the TARDIS, and that pose with the red velvet of the coat like a puddle of blood, but more important the reason is kind of like Davidson but a little more bittersweet and a summation of the "where I stand is were I fall" speech.
Best is Night of the Doctor, completes a years long off screen character arc, canonises Big Finish and is performed by one of the best actors to ever touch the role of the Doctor.
Even the bottom spot has an intresting apect. I do enjoy the vortex swirl over the face; I find it intriguing. It looks like it itself is bigger on the inside, like you can stick your entire arm into it.
Honestly, my appreciation for the 8th Doctor´s regeneration has grown even more over the years. Sesskasays´ Doctor Who December may have helped with that a little bit, too. It might actually be my 2nd favourite now.
Matt Smith's speech hurt me on Christmas 2013, I left Primary School Starting a new era in my life, like a new Doctor...Paul Mcgann's speech hurts more for me then before now, it's BIG FINISH!!! Moffat made it Canon for him!!! And knowing some of the context...Some people died for him!!! Peter Davidson's one is the opposite of Mcgann's when you think about it...Mcgann tries to save someone's else life and he *FAILED*...while Davidson's case *SUCCESSED!!!* P.S I Watch Tennant's when it aired: Didn't Know what to Think! And a few months ago with the story: It Still didn't connect to me!
i totally agree with ur choice re tennant tho also purely on the cause of his regeneration, i fucking love capaldi's, the fact that the whole theme of s10 leading up to it was "without hope, without witness, without reward" and that that was exactly what he died for just worked so well for me. i just wish they'd not delayed with TUOAT and had him regenerate at the end of TDF, or idk added another episode to s10, made WEAT the series finale with a cliffhanger and then TDF the xmas special
Tennant never got his happy ending, with no companion to see him leave and him not wanting to "go" and the epic regeneration that nearly blew up the tardis will forever be my favourite and iconic
My list: 15. 6th-7th Doctor 14. 14th-15th Doctor 13. 7th-8th Doctor 12. War-9th Doctor 11. 4th-5th Doctor 10. 2nd-3rd Doctor 9. 3rd-4th Doctor 8. 1st-2nd Doctor 7. 11th-12th Doctor 6. 9th-10th Doctor 5. 12th-13th Doctor 4. 8th-War Doctor 3. 13th-14th Doctor 2. 5th-6th Doctor 1. 10th-11th Doctor
Big Finish fixed 6th's regeneration! I totally understand not including it here, but for anyone who is unaware of its existence/ is hesitant to buy it (which, again, is totally understandable, considering the high price of big finish products...), please consider giving it a try...? It's a pretty self-contained box set with some good stuff in it. (I myself am currently catching up on big finish audios and 6 is my current favorite -idiot- incarnation of the Doctor so... disclaimer?)
The 10 to 11 is my favorite regeneration. I literally went from sobbing brokenly to laughing hysterically in SECONDS. For me it’s the epitome of what a regeneration is.
I love David Tennats doctor (shock) but I like you dont like his regeneration. It doesnt fit his happy go lucky character, or even his angrier side. It's just lame and not in character. I usually skip it. Thats not how I want to remember him. P.s When you were talking about 11 to 12 I got goosebumps all over my legs :) I just love it, even though like you I dont care that much about the episode, but when Amy runs along the railing, raggedy man, and "I will always remember when the doctor was me"... Cant watch without crying. :)
i just watched a regeneration ranking video where David to Matt was to them the best one and to come to this video and see it so low was so jarring lmaooo. i appreciate your honestly of your opinion though. really nice to see Matt's regeneration so high up tho
Scrolling through my subscriptions I misread the Thumbnail title as "DOCTOR WHO REGENERATIONS NAKED" Which would be a VERY different video. And much shorter, I can only think of 4.5 of them who've been naked on the show. (3, 8, 10 and 11... and 9 was shirtless that one time)
Totally agree on the Tennant one. "I don't want to go" annoyed me at the time. I like the suddenness of Smith into Capaldi but your number one is probably still the best.
Ooh, your brave putting tens regeneration so low, but I 100% agree! The fifth doctors regeneration is even better when you consider that he doesn't really know Peri very well yet, they only met in the previous story and they didn't spend all of that story together, so he sacrifices himself, without hesitation, for someone that he doesn't know all that well. It's my favourite regeneration of all time.
Ah, yes, thanks Ben. Very good point. I have bought and have listened to all the fifth doctor and peri stories, i do enjoy them and some of them are classics but unfortunately I don't count them as cannon in my head as I prefer the regeneration the way it was rather than the doctor sacrificing himself for a very good and dear friend. But that's my selective head cannon. Sorry.
@@allanjohnstone5258 Fair enough, it actually adds to the tragedy for me. 5 doesn't make friends easily he argued with Adric and Teagen all the time. He finally found people he connected with in Peri and Erimen and loses all that when he regenerates and his personality changes. It also seems to carry on a running trend of 5 losing people right when he starts to connect with them e.g. he got along with Adric better after their spat in Earthshock, Turlough departed right he stopped trying to kill him.
@@Ben-vf5gk that's very true, I had never thought of it like that. Thanks Ben! I do love Erimem's departure in the bride of peladon, where Peri asks if the doctor misses her and he replys "I miss them all" it always makes me tear up.
Whenever I watch Tennant regenerate I always feel bad for Will. He has to stand there watching 10 have a whole breakdown and poor Will is standing there probably feeling guilty as hell and like its fault the doctor has to die/change (depending on how that doctor or the audience likes to view regeneration). I get why 10 reacts like that but it niggles at me that he put Will in a shitty position stuck there watching and feeling guilty. I love Wilf too much for that 🥺
When you said Controversial and said David Tennant I thought you were going for Tennant into Tennant. Obviously putting it on a list would be controversial in itself.
10. Nine into Ten 9. Fourth into Fifth 8. War into the (start) of Nine - DOTD 7. Ten into Eleven 6. Third into Fourth 5. Extended Second into Third (Devious) 4. First into Second 3. Eighth into War 2. Sixth into Seventh 1. Ten’s Incomplete regeneration (The Stolen Earth/Journey’s End)
My mouth dropped when I realised what made the top spot. But, you know what, - and I feel pretty much the same as you about Davison - I completely agree.
It's actually not getting shot that kills Seven, but the doctors trying to save him as he desperately tries to get them to stop as their methods will actually kill him. It's a quite creepy way for such a chessmaster Doctor who was always in control to go out.
I was shocked at first 5->6 was number one at first because I always forget how good it was. I only ever remember the jarring "You're expecting someone else?" bit.
That wasn’t quite what I expected. Not sure why but I think I expected you to rank every regeneration in the show, such as Melody into River and Derek Jacobi into John Simm.
I think Ten saying "I don't want to go" was less about him changing and more about the fact that he was leaving all those people behind and would never see them again. We even see the Eleventh Doctor feel guilt over Rose, Martha, and Donna. The Tenth Doctor was a people's person, and a romantic, and he didn't want to stop being that. But I think his future was in safe hands.
A very well thought through list! I actually find I agree on the 10th-11th. Although his behaviour fits the 10ths increasingly avaricious attitude, I've always felt "I don't want to go!" unfairly poisoned the well for the 11th. "Hey Matt, you're the incarnation the Doctor resented becoming, yay!" The victory lap scenes had already been a great indulgence, the TARDIS smashing antics just felt like a step way too far. I hate to be wearing the pedantic hat here but in the McGann movie the 7th Doctor isn't killed by the bullets. Even in the story it states the gunshot wounds he sustained were not life threatening. It's Grace who kills him when she gets lost in his alien cardiovascular system (and whatever drugs they pumped him with). To her and everyone around her it looks like a case of gross malpractice. The Doctor's "death" serves to drive her narrative rather than his own. I'm not much of a fan of the telemovie and I wouldn't change the position of the regen, but the Doctor has long been very cagey about receiving any human medical treatment and that illustrated exactly why! Regarding the 4th to 5th, the Watcher was a revisit of what we witnessed with Cho Je merging with K'anpo Rinpoche in Planet of the Spiders. It does seem to suggest the Timelords do have this strange ability to mentally project their future self in some circumstances. I also quite like the mystery surrounding it. I would actually really love for the new series to revisit this idea as it would be fascinating to have the future Doctor's incarnation play a spooky roll in a current Doctor's last story. It'd give a whole new spin to the now very samey routine of handovers. Guess I'm not surprised at the top spot! It really is the bar against which all other regenerations are measured!
I think the 'children can hear your name' part in the 12th Doctor's speech reflects upon the deep impact the show has on kids. Capaldi himself was a 5 year old when he saw the show for the first time, and he has often said that as a child the show fired his imagination in a way that nothing else did. I don't think that part of the speech is meant to be taken literally- like children can literally hear his name- but rather in a metaphorical way, that the show has a special significance and appeal for children and they understand its meaning in a unique way that adults don't. That's why he says that children can hear his 'name' , but nobody else.
I dont really mind the difference in the regenerations. To me even though they are the same doctor, each one is his own person. So while one dies accidentally, another dies of old age, one dies heroically, one dies non-descript, another is forced by Time Lords etc etc. If each one died the same way going out with a bang saving the universe and making tremendous sacrifices it would become too self indulgent in my opinion. Its part of the charm of the show to me
My favourite regeneration was 4th to 5th, mainly because the music sets the mood perfectly. I must admit, I'm getting a bit tired of the New Who thing of "loads of orange light, then blow up the Tardis".
4th to 5th and 5th to 6th were the best... 4th to 5th was summed up by Tom's last words perfectly "It's the end, but the moment has been prepared for". While 5th to 6th was a really good idea which ended in a truly explosive and psychedelic regeneration reminiscent of the adverse effects of drugs... I heard somewhere that the production team were inspired by the Beatles' "A Day in the Life" from Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, considering the regeneration built up to this climax like the aleatoric orchestra heard in the song.
I think my favorite is possibly David Tennant to Matt Smith or Peter Davison to Colin Baker. It's deeply dramatic and emotional, then when he regenerates, it's a bit of a punchline. That also exists with Matt Smith to Peter Capaldi, and I really like how Matt Smith is emotional, but accepting of change. However, the transformation itself is underplayed. I really like Christopher Eccleston to David Tennant as well. It keeps it simple. In keeping it simple, the original is pretty good in doing that. I guess my ranking? Good question. Let's see: 1. David Tennant to Matt Smith 2. Peter Davison to Colin Baker 3. Christopher Eccleston to David Tennant 4. William Hartnell to Patrick Troughton (The Original) 5. John Hurt to Christopher Eccleston (One that is definitely exciting and anticipated) 6. Matt Smith to Peter Capaldi 7. Colin Baker to Sylvester McCoy (Not as bad as fans make it out to be, I like the reveal of an already regenerating face is cool) 8. Peter Capaldi to Jodie Whitaker 9. Paul McGann to John Hurt 10. Sylvester McCoy to Paul McGann (Really cool effects, but not so fond of the Frankenstein aspect; in the context of the movie itself, I thought it worked well, but not so much on it's own) 11. John Pertwee to Tom Baker (A regeneration of major importance, but it falls under the meh category for me) 12. Patrick Troughton to Jon Pertwee (Although it worked well in switching from black and white to color, in regards to the regeneration itself, I want to see the second half of the regeneration; there are some nice fan edits where they show Jon Pertwee falling out of the TARDIS, but in the show, there's stuff other than the credits in between those two moments) 13. Tom Baker to Peter Davison (Don't like the watcher having been there)
I feel like it was just a case of trying to out do the Tennent to Smith regeneration... “10 blew up the Tardis? Well let’s half 11 blow up the Daleks with regeneration energy, have him de age then snap into the next doctor”
I remember watching a video like this years ago where the reviewer apologetically put 10 quite far down on the list and then chose 5 as his top pick. I thought that it was a rather weird ranking, but I guess those opinions are more popular than I thought.
My favorite is 12's but I also understand why people don't like the whole long speech. I like 12 the best and I love what he says tho. My second is the 9th doctor's and then I would say 11's. I feel like the best overall is probably 9's. Simple but really full of both hope and heartbreak
My biggest issue with 10's regeneration has always been that over-extended farewell tour. It was just so boring to watch, and by the time he was actually in the TARDIS I just wanted the regeneration to get on already, and I didn't feel anything from his last line. Tennant was a really great Doctor, but those final moments with him fell flat. It's probably one of my least favorite regenerations ever. I do find the contrast with 12's kind of funny, because we had an entire extra episode with 12 after the moment he was actually "killed," yet that's one of my favorite regenerations; forgoing isolation of the regeneration scene itself, 12's worked for me so much more because of the episode around it creating a bittersweet story about death and acceptance. Both the 1st and 12th Doctors, and even Bill, knew as well as the audience that this would be the last adventure for both incarnations. Instead of spending their final moments entirely on running around the globe and self-indulging, they grew separately as a character in a positive way and saved someone before finally retiring to their respective regenerations. I also love that 12, in his final speech, left optimistic words to his next incarnation, which is so much more appealing than 10's insistence on regeneration feeling like death and rejecting his next body.
If anyone cares: 1: Vale Decum 2: Seismically confused Clara 3: "A tear, Sarah Jane?" 4: "You know what? So was I!" 5: Tom Baker's smile 6: Patrick Troughton's face 7: "Will it Hurt?" 8: Pear hate 9: Welcome to America, Mr Mcoy. 10: Colin Baker has the worst character introduction in the history of the multiverse 11: Absent Colin 12: War - 9 13: 6 - 7
I would have thought there would still be two sets of parameters to consider: The process of regeneration AND the new Doctor's first moments. I've seen twice where the latter completely killed the former and bumped it down... unless one runs a separate "Doctor's first moments ranked" video.
11 to 12 should have been 11th. It supposed to be a big thing, first of the new set of regenerations from the Time Lords and Matt Smith head back and then just snap Capaldi is there. It was like there was no regeneration at all, really bad almost as bad as War Doctor to 9th with the missing finish.
Oh shoot you're right
Looking at it like that I actually really like it. That's neat.
I think before his regeneration 12 has the wisest words for anyone, anytime: Always try to be nice, never fail to be kind.
"Laugh hard.
Run fast.

@@bacul165 Bill said he ran like a penguin with his ass on fire.
I know! She feels exactly like the person 12 wanted to be, and I love that.
She blows up a teenage human rights activist. The pears are next. THE PEARS ARE NEXT!
Well Jodi doctor isn’t good bro I could see where there were going
I think Tennant’s tantrum is a look into the doctors arrogance and a window into 10s darker side. He appears the most human and compassionate version of the Dr but he has this arrogance and self importance bubbling under the surface. This side of him came out rarely in his era such as in The Waters of Mars but I think it’s an interesting dissection of the character

New who really like to drag out its regenerations don't they (apart from the War and 9th Doctors).
And play up the melodrama, something that they didn't do so much in Classic Who.
I understand but there is lore and reason behind long regenerations.
9th Doctor's- Lasts like 5 minutes
10th Doctor's- Lasts about 20 minutes
11th Doctor's- Lasts like 15 minutes

YES!!!! Finally someone appreciates the 5th to 6th regeneration
The most heartbreaking death was Seven's, literally.
There was also something poetic to the end of 7. Not just in his death being so ordinary, but it was a human doctor that killed him.
@@pious83 As well as cashing in on ER, I think the reason why there are actual doctors in the TV movie is so they could basically go, "these may be doctors, but he is _the_ Doctor. The definite article, you might say."

@KVAcedo27 I don't have much of a problem with that stuff, but lines like "some new man goes sauntering away. and I'm dead" make him seem super vain.
@@caleb7551 Or, or, he is clearly traumatized at having to cope with the fact that after all this incarnation has been through by this point, he knows that very soon his time is coming to an end, and some new man will just go off happy like it never happened.

Colin Bakers big finish regen was great I think . It is as part of the timeline as anything I think . It was part of the whole body of work .
16:00 thank you. I hate how people make fun of it as a "sneeze" regeneration. Nothing wrong with a bit of subtlety.
I don't hate it either...
I think it matches his doctor and loved it to
Ehh, i still don't like it. But oh well.
I don’t think he sneezed
I really like Smith's speech. I feel like Moffat, for all his faults, wrote incredible Doctor speeches in his day. But I like how it wasn't like Tennant's regen nor was Capaldi's. I really prefer the way Moffat did the regenerations.
My top 13 Regeneration sequences are:
1. Peter Capaldi to Jodie Whittaker (This one broke me the most!)
2. Matt Smith to Peter Capaldi
3. William Hartnell to Patrick Troughton
4. Tom Baker to Peter Davison
5. Peter Davison to Colin Baker
6. Christopher Eccleston to David Tennant
7. Jon Pertwee to Tom Baker
8. Paul McGann to John Hurt
9. Patrick Troughton to Jon Pertwee
10. David Tennant to Matt Smith
11. John Hurt to Christopher Eccleston
12. Sylvester McCoy to Paul McGann
For Capaldi, the part with "Children can hear your name"
Capaldi was asked on Comic Con by a lil boy whats the Doctors name was. Capaldi beein great with fans, told him that exact speech.
He wanted to keep it in the regeneration. lovly Easter-Egg
btw every modern Doctor-Regeneration has a line that wasnt in the script, but said by the actors, what they wanna say.
McGann "physician heal yourself"
Ecclstones (you were fantastic) "and so was I"
Tennant "I dont want to go"
Smith "I will always remember, when the Doctor was me"
Capadi "Children can hear your name....."
Quoting a doctor aren't you Mcgann!!!
I honestly have Capaldi's regeneration into Jodi as my number one, because i've always taken it as, because he's an old man, he sees the future in children and he sees them being kind and living up to his namesake, it reinvigorates him to do the same.
The Savior Of Universes Willingly Dying To Save One Person And Not Hesitating To Do It
The 'I Don't Want to Go' moment did have a plus side - The callback to it used to devastating effect in 'An Adventure in Space and Time'.
Lol I was just thinking this morning, "I wonder if they've done a regeneration ranking list yet?" and here it is! Can't wait to watch later!
DON'T BE SORRY! haha :) "I don't wanna go" was over the top and you don't have to be ashamed to say it.

Big Finish gave the Sixth Doctor a far more dignified and heroic exit.
7s death is interesting because he was the master manipulator. He always planned ahead and yet didn't bother to check the scanner and just walked out into the gunfire. I think its fitting that his doctor would die from something simple and very human
I haven't heard 6's audio regeneration but apart from that I'll give it a go-
13. Six (at least his TV version)
12. Seven (as a huge McCoy fan and defender of the TV movie I HATE the way he goes)
11. War (not much here TBH)
10. Twelve (just a longer, duller repeat of Eleven's speech that is trying way to hard to make a general audience care about this Doctor the way they did the last two)
9. One (only high because of the impact)
8. Two (amazing story, but others are better)
7. Ten (overblown yes, but the emotion is still there)
6. Three (understated and underrated)
5. Eight (chills every time he names his BF companions)
4. Four (probably the best final line of any Doctor and beautiful music)
3. Nine (simple and wonderful)
2. Eleven (mixed story yes, but a perfect speech and music choice. Although he is my favourite so I'm a bit bias)
1. Five (iconic and genius)
Don’t worry, I hate “I don’t want to go” as well. “WOW, WHAT A GREAT LAST LINE (Can you sense the sarcasm?)”

I think that 6-7 b.f might be my favorite regeneration. A lot of emotion in that one. If you haven't, please go and get The Last Adventure.

Whoo finally found this channel again. I used to watch ur stuff when you were at 5k subs. Congratulations on 40k m8
Ten's regeneration broke me. He didn't want to go and I didn't want him to go either. 😥😭😭😭

@@lwaves how us it a copycat regen? What does that mean?
@Harry Willmore It means they used exactly the same regen fx and almost exactly the same pose as the last one. In the classic series each one was different in some notable way, even with the similarities. Since Ecclescake, they've all basically been exactly the same. Does that make sense?

well done my good man you got 1st place absolutely correct - The 5th Doctor into the 6th
"is this death ?"
"change my dear and it seems not a moment too soon"
I love Caves of Andrazani and has such an epic ending ( :
I think this is one of the best ranked videos by you I've seen because your number one was so unexpected. I know you're not partial to either Doctor involved, yet it's your top pick because you thought it was the best. That's...kind of awesome.
But wait what about all the regenerations in curse of the fatal death (this is obviously a joke)
I thought you were going to say ‘Well, here we go again’ at the start
He addresses that in the vid
@@WiloPolis03 not those specific details.
Thanks for the vid COG 😊
Peter Davidson's one is the opposite of Mcgann's when you think about it...Mcgann tries to save someone's else life and he *FAILED*...while Davidson's case *SUCCESSED!!!*
P.S I Watch Tennant's when it aired: Didn't Know what to Think! And a few months ago with the story: It Still didn't connect to me!
i totally agree with ur choice re tennant tho
also purely on the cause of his regeneration, i fucking love capaldi's, the fact that the whole theme of s10 leading up to it was "without hope, without witness, without reward" and that that was exactly what he died for just worked so well for me. i just wish they'd not delayed with TUOAT and had him regenerate at the end of TDF, or idk added another episode to s10, made WEAT the series finale with a cliffhanger and then TDF the xmas special
Tennant never got his happy ending, with no companion to see him leave and him not wanting to "go" and the epic regeneration that nearly blew up the tardis will forever be my favourite and iconic
My list:

14. 14th-15th Doctor
13. 7th-8th Doctor
12. War-9th Doctor
11. 4th-5th Doctor
10. 2nd-3rd Doctor
9. 3rd-4th Doctor
8. 1st-2nd Doctor
7. 11th-12th Doctor
6. 9th-10th Doctor
5. 12th-13th Doctor
4. 8th-War Doctor
3. 13th-14th Doctor
2. 5th-6th Doctor
1. 10th-11th Doctor
Tennant*
i just watched a regeneration ranking video where David to Matt was to them the best one and to come to this video and see it so low was so jarring lmaooo. i appreciate your honestly of your opinion though. really nice to see Matt's regeneration so high up tho
You got absolutely the best frame from the War Doctor regeneration. Thank you.
The Doctor: (*Watching Seven get shot) And that's why I always check the monitor before leaving the TARDIS.
Scrolling through my subscriptions I misread the Thumbnail title as "DOCTOR WHO REGENERATIONS NAKED"
Which would be a VERY different video. And much shorter, I can only think of 4.5 of them who've been naked on the show. (3, 8, 10 and 11... and 9 was shirtless that one time)
in this case, I agree with your list! very wonderfully done. :)
Well thanks to audio he spent more time with Peri, so he knew her quite well by the time of Androzani.
@@allanjohnstone5258 Godammit, I still need to get to that story- don't worry you didn't spoil it but I need to listen to it.
10. Nine into Ten
9. Fourth into Fifth
8. War into the (start) of Nine - DOTD
7. Ten into Eleven
6. Third into Fourth
5. Extended Second into Third (Devious)
4. First into Second
3. Eighth into War
2. Sixth into Seventh
The most cunning, chessmaster incarnation of the Doctor getting gunned down like an idiot as soon as he steps out of the TARDIS? Yes please
What about 10 - 10, and The 2nd Doctor didn't actually regenerate into the 3rd Doctor at the end of War Games.
Let's see:
1. David Tennant to Matt Smith
2. Peter Davison to Colin Baker
3. Christopher Eccleston to David Tennant
4. William Hartnell to Patrick Troughton (The Original)
5. John Hurt to Christopher Eccleston (One that is definitely exciting and anticipated)
6. Matt Smith to Peter Capaldi
7. Colin Baker to Sylvester McCoy (Not as bad as fans make it out to be, I like the reveal of an already regenerating face is cool)
8. Peter Capaldi to Jodie Whitaker
9. Paul McGann to John Hurt
10. Sylvester McCoy to Paul McGann (Really cool effects, but not so fond of the Frankenstein aspect; in the context of the movie itself, I thought it worked well, but not so much on it's own)
11. John Pertwee to Tom Baker (A regeneration of major importance, but it falls under the meh category for me)
12. Patrick Troughton to Jon Pertwee (Although it worked well in switching from black and white to color, in regards to the regeneration itself, I want to see the second half of the regeneration; there are some nice fan edits where they show Jon Pertwee falling out of the TARDIS, but in the show, there's stuff other than the credits in between those two moments)
13. Tom Baker to Peter Davison (Don't like the watcher having been there)
11's regeneration is still the most emotional for me, although 12 is my favorite.
Always remember all the people you used to be, the best quote in all of television
If anyone cares:
1: Vale Decum
2: Seismically confused Clara
3: "A tear, Sarah Jane?"
4: "You know what? So was I!"
5: Tom Baker's smile
6: Patrick Troughton's face
7: "Will it Hurt?"
8: Pear hate
9: Welcome to America, Mr Mcoy.
10: Colin Baker has the worst character introduction in the history of the multiverse
11: Absent Colin
12: War - 9
13: 6 - 7
Aren't your 11th and 13th positions the same?
@@NitroIndigo oh thanks
I would have thought there would still be two sets of parameters to consider: The process of regeneration AND the new Doctor's first moments. I've seen twice where the latter completely killed the former and bumped it down... unless one runs a separate "Doctor's first moments ranked" video.
My fav is 11s regeneration
11 to 12 should have been 11th. It supposed to be a big thing, first of the new set of regenerations from the Time Lords and Matt Smith head back and then just snap Capaldi is there. It was like there was no regeneration at all, really bad almost as bad as War Doctor to 9th with the missing finish.
I get teared every time when watching the 10th and 11th doctors regenerations
