Thanks for showing this. My tics also get quieter in quiet environments. It's important for people to know that the volume of our tics can be different. This gives me hope for when I go back to university this year.
having tics in a classroom can be especially difficult when there is a substitute teacher. my teacher is extremely respectful and if im having a really bad tic attack she always helps me through it. one time she was out sick and there was an extremely rude substitute. i cursed her out because cursing is one of my tics along with the middle finger, she did not take that well and started going off on me and the entire class could hear. a student tried to explain my tics to her, but she wouldn't listen and sent me to the office. even the office tried to explain to her that i just had tourettes syndrome and she still wouldnt listen. lets just say she got in quite a bit of trouble after school that day. just a friendly reminder to not let anyone judge you for what you can and cannot control.

I've been diagnosed with tourettes meaning I've had then for more than two years for sure (times fuzzy and I can't remember the exact time tbh) and I have "tic breaks" in a private environment outside of class and use fidget toys. The worse part personally is the people. My teachers are educated but have mistakenly pointed them out and my peers aren't very nice about it. They don't know I have tourettes but openly make fun of it with eachother. School starts soon (August 31st) and I'm quite scared. Seeing others with Tourettes really helps so I'd like to thank you! organise a meeting with staff and parents if you can, then they can be properly educated in a more formal setting and be told the medical facts backing up what support you need 💕 if you're in the UK, tourettes action can offer to come into your school and do a talk for you, educating the staff on Tourettes
@@Zara_Beth That's kinda what we do. My therapist who works very closely with Tourettes said she's going to help throughout the year if needed. A counselor does the talks with the staff, but only my teachers I assume because substitutes never seem to know which can be stressful. I also have a "504 Plan" that has my accommodations. It's a legal document and teachers aren't allowed to break it but of course they have. I've wanted to get an actual Tourettes group or something to go in and explain it for the longest time, but I've always been kinda dismissed. Luckily as I said my therapist is very on my side and ready to help if the school is being stupid lol

She does exactly these tics! shes been called attention seeker among other names and results in melt downs at school. This is great to watch and understand more myself also!

Hi! Someone with tics here! We can’t control when they happen or what happens but we can suppress them! Almost like a sneeze! It will end up happening if u hold it in like a sneeze but it temporarily stops for a while then comes out later! Hope this helps.

I’m going into public school for the first time in my entire life as a sophomore and I’ve had tics for abt 4 years now but they have progressively gotten worse- I’m always super self conscious abt my tics, especially in public bc I get weird stares and comments from ppl, so I’m super nervous abt going to school. I try to tell myself not to suppress tics bc that’s not good to do, but I can’t help it; it’s scary being stared at bc you know you’re doing weird things and you can’t help it
May be a phycologist can help you to learn taking your tics as something normal and smth, that people around you eventually get used to Good luck with your school experience. I'm sure if you'll work on your fears, you'll have a good time at school👍💓

There's a boy in my class, and I remember how confused I was when he started grunting/breathing loudly and sniffing. At first, I thought he was watching something funny and laughing, so I looked over at him and saw that he was just quietly doing his work. The next few days, he did similar things and I was wondering what was going on. Later on, I got to know him pretty well and he mentioned his tics in one of our conversations, and even openly shared to the class that he has tourettes. I'm not at all fazed by the fact that he has that condition, and it doesn't lessen my opinion of him at all. If anything, I think he's a really brave and strong guy for being able to socialize so freely even with his disorder.

i get adhd tics and my friend has Tourettes and i feel bad for her especially since the teachers yell at her and sometimes me aswell for rocking in my chair but shes very nice and we end up just laughing it off and its interesting to see what tics are like in a quite environment and im willing to learn more and educate myself
random question, do you ever pick up on or unconsciously start mimicking her tics? My brother had tourettes growing up (he's mostly grown out of it as an adult) but growing up, I was diagnosed with pretty severe ADHD as a kid, and as an adult I was diagnosed with comorbid Autism, but my brother had a LOT of vocal tics when we were kids and his most common was clearing his throat. I would get yelled at a lot by my parents for "copying" his tics but it was like, once I heard him do it the third time in a row, I involuntarily started clearing my throat too and COULDN'T stop. I tried to explain to my parents that I wasn't doing it for attention but I think it always came across as them perceiving me as copying bad behaviour to receive equal attention from them. I've never met any other sibling pairs who had an ADHD/TS combo in the family and I was just wondering if anyone else had the same problem with "compulsive assimilation" to other ND kids' actions.

I don't have Tourette's but I've had tics since I was 5 (over 10 years). My anxiety makes me suppress my tics whenever I'm in a public place (and they end up being much more severe later). Ty for this video! 😀 It helped me to re-enforce the knowledge that others struggle with tics and that it's not just me. 😊😊
@@cookiequeen5430 So the Google answer was this: "Tics are defined as sudden, rapid, recurrent, nonrhythmic motor movements or vocalization, generally preceded by urge. Tourette's syndrome is defined as the presence of both motor and phonic tics for more than 1 year in patients with onset less than 18 years old." TL;DR - tics are involuntary movements, while Tourette's is a syndrome (and tics are a symptom). I've had bad tics since I was 5 (for example, harshly jerking my head forward, flaring my nose, raising my eyebrows as high as they can go, etc.), but have never been diagnosed with Tourette's. I don't know for sure if I have it or not, but right now I'm going with not. I just say I have really bad tics. Hopefully this helped! 😁If you have any more questions, I can try and answer them for you!
This is very interesting. Most tics are usually a few repetitive things at a time that a person subconsciously gets fixated on, the tics you are showing are completely different things at random, not a consistent repetitive fixation as expressed with most common tics.
I don't think that's true. This is how most tics I've seen (and the ones I have) normally are. You can still see the general pattern and the common tics here, they're just not in a specific pattern /lh

My friend has been recently diagnosed with turrets the tics that she has she finds really funny but has 2 painful ones one is smacking her hand against the table so when we sit together I put my hand between hers and the table so it doesn’t get hurt
When i told my German teacher i had a tic disorder she called my mom to ask what to do if i insulted her in class 😭😭 So i took time to explain to her i don't have coprolalia and it's mostly abrupt movements that harm myself and people near me She didn't really understand but she was okay with it as long as i didn't insult her I can't even imagine how bad it would be with coprolalia
I have coprolalia and I’ve cussed out my teachers before. They are very understanding and help me through it. Its very difficult though, especially in public spaces.
Just like the person who sat next to you started giggling at the end, I would have started a while ago just from the reactions when you hit the wall, or hit the person next to you. You’re wonderful! And you made me smile and laugh.
I am so happy for this. I hate watching it not because of you but because it triggers things but it is educational and helps me to find ways to cope and suppress them. But also they aren’t always super loud they can be different volumes if it is quiet my tics will most likely be quieter a few aren’t quiet though. But I think a lot of people need to watch this to understand how they work or other things.
I find tics fascinating in a way. It’s just the way that people deal with them and the different types of them. Having 2 people in my family (who you remind me of) having tics has made me understand more about them and how to not trigger them to make them worse. This was kind of cool to see 😀

My son had a tic disorder for about 6-7 months as part of his PANDAS flare-up. He was in kindergarten. I remember a few teachers I work with thinking he was faking it . . . at 6! I explained that I was terrified he'd choke because his verbal tics would happen even when he was trying to swallow. He also couldn't pick anything up until he'd done some fluttering with his hands. He developed OCD and also needed to use the bathroom every 20 minutes. It went on all day, every day. Once he got diagnosed with PANDAS and put on antibiotics, all his symptoms completely disappeared within 48 hours. I got a doctor who understood PANDAS and knows to put him on antibiotics the second they start up again, and 9 years later he hasn't had another large episode like that. I really feel for you going through this long-haul. I hope someday they find a cure for Tourette's. Thank you for educating us all with your videos.

The poor classmates, many people struggle tremendously with sudden noises, sensory overload, staying concentrated/being attentive, often either due to being neurodivergent, (C)PTSD or traumatised, anxiety etc, yet it's "ableist" to admit that verbal or otherwise loud tics are disruptive, scary etc.
Her class clearly doesn’t mind, and if you have every watched her videos, you would know they are perfectly fine with having a student with Tourette Syndrome in their class. Also, nobody said its ableist to admit those things, you’re just another person speaking of things you hardly know about in an attempt to “be different.”

I have tics myself and my mother and siblings hate it and ask me to stop. I tell them I can't. I've tried to stop it myself but I naturally can't. And then I went to the doctors for an appointment with them and my mother was saying that I have those tics a out 10 months old at the time and then he said it might be mild stage of torrets syndrome. I'm not yet like diagnosed with it but he made a report of the meeting. Don't judge ANYONE and don't stop them of being themselves!!
Lolol the best part other than fighting the wall, is the tap a friend "got covid now". As difficult as it must be with these issues, it must be nice for those who understand, to be able to make light of some things and try and help a negative experience, be not so negative anymore.

I also have Tourettes Syndrome, I feel you. Luckily mine is controlled by a powerful med, but it's still there. Like I keep rubbing my nose with my right hand - with my pointer finger. I can't stop speaking my mind's thoughts, I sound out ck and guh, case in point, I have similar tics like you. You are not alone, we are in this together!
Tics seem very unusual but unique it also seems they can be aggressive at times with is cool but it can get you in trouble btw you are very beautiful!!

I’m going into public school for the first time in my entire life as a sophomore and I’ve had tics for abt 4 years now but they have progressively gotten worse- I’m always super self conscious abt my tics, especially in public bc I get weird stares and comments from ppl, so I’m super nervous abt going to school. I try to tell myself not to suppress tics bc that’s not good to do, but I can’t help it; it’s scary being stared at bc you know you’re doing weird things and you can’t help it
May be a phycologist can help you to learn taking your tics as something normal and smth, that people around you eventually get used to

I’m going to be getting psychologically evaluated soon to be tested for other things as well, but currently I do not have a doctor- however I have a therapist so I can maybe bring it up to her, but I get the feeling she’ll tell me that other ppl have it worse and I just need to brush it off- but anyways, thank you once again🖤
I literally though I commented this because I'm going into public school as a sophomore aswell as have tics, the only difference is mine are getting slower. but advice, if they ask explain. they shouldn't make fun of you for something you can't control.also you may want to explain to your teachers. :)

I have a lot of vocal tics, and it is really difficult in class, because we do a lot of quiet activities.
There's a boy in my class, and I remember how confused I was when he started grunting/breathing loudly and sniffing. At first, I thought he was watching something funny and laughing, so I looked over at him and saw that he was just quietly doing his work. The next few days, he did similar things and I was wondering what was going on. Later on, I got to know him pretty well and he mentioned his tics in one of our conversations, and even openly shared to the class that he has tourettes.
I'm not at all fazed by the fact that he has that condition, and it doesn't lessen my opinion of him at all. If anything, I think he's a really brave and strong guy for being able to socialize so freely even with his disorder.
Saying someone is brave for “being able” to socialize even though they have a disorder is such a backhanded compliment.

i get adhd tics and my friend has Tourettes and i feel bad for her especially since the teachers yell at her and sometimes me aswell for rocking in my chair but shes very nice and we end up just laughing it off and its interesting to see what tics are like in a quite environment and im willing to learn more and educate myself
random question, do you ever pick up on or unconsciously start mimicking her tics? My brother had tourettes growing up (he's mostly grown out of it as an adult) but growing up, I was diagnosed with pretty severe ADHD as a kid, and as an adult I was diagnosed with comorbid Autism, but my brother had a LOT of vocal tics when we were kids and his most common was clearing his throat. I would get yelled at a lot by my parents for "copying" his tics but it was like, once I heard him do it the third time in a row, I involuntarily started clearing my throat too and COULDN'T stop. I tried to explain to my parents that I wasn't doing it for attention but I think it always came across as them perceiving me as copying bad behaviour to receive equal attention from them. I've never met any other sibling pairs who had an ADHD/TS combo in the family and I was just wondering if anyone else had the same problem with "compulsive assimilation" to other ND kids' actions.

I don't have Tourette's but I've had tics since I was 5 (over 10 years). My anxiety makes me suppress my tics whenever I'm in a public place (and they end up being much more severe later).

Hey, I don't know a lot about tics. What's the difference between having tourettes and "just" having tics?
@@cookiequeen5430 So the Google answer was this: "Tics are defined as sudden, rapid, recurrent, nonrhythmic motor movements or vocalization, generally preceded by urge. Tourette's syndrome is defined as the presence of both motor and phonic tics for more than 1 year in patients with onset less than 18 years old."
TL;DR - tics are involuntary movements, while Tourette's is a syndrome (and tics are a symptom).
I've had bad tics since I was 5 (for example, harshly jerking my head forward, flaring my nose, raising my eyebrows as high as they can go, etc.), but have never been diagnosed with Tourette's. I don't know for sure if I have it or not, but right now I'm going with not. I just say I have really bad tics.

This is very interesting. Most tics are usually a few repetitive things at a time that a person subconsciously gets fixated on, the tics you are showing are completely different things at random, not a consistent repetitive fixation as expressed with most common tics.
I don't think that's true. This is how most tics I've seen (and the ones I have) normally are. You can still see the general pattern and the common tics here, they're just not in a specific pattern /lh

My friend has been recently diagnosed with turrets the tics that she has she finds really funny but has 2 painful ones one is smacking her hand against the table so when we sit together I put my hand between hers and the table so it doesn’t get hurt
When i told my German teacher i had a tic disorder she called my mom to ask what to do if i insulted her in class 😭😭
So i took time to explain to her i don't have coprolalia and it's mostly abrupt movements that harm myself and people near me
She didn't really understand but she was okay with it as long as i didn't insult her

I have coprolalia and I’ve cussed out my teachers before. They are very understanding and help me through it. Its very difficult though, especially in public spaces.
Just like the person who sat next to you started giggling at the end, I would have started a while ago just from the reactions when you hit the wall, or hit the person next to you. You’re wonderful! And you made me smile and laugh.
I am so happy for this. I hate watching it not because of you but because it triggers things but it is educational and helps me to find ways to cope and suppress them. But also they aren’t always super loud they can be different volumes if it is quiet my tics will most likely be quieter a few aren’t quiet though. But I think a lot of people need to watch this to understand how they work or other things.
I find tics fascinating in a way. It’s just the way that people deal with them and the different types of them. Having 2 people in my family (who you remind me of) having tics has made me understand more about them and how to not trigger them to make them worse. This was kind of cool to see 😀

My son had a tic disorder for about 6-7 months as part of his PANDAS flare-up. He was in kindergarten. I remember a few teachers I work with thinking he was faking it . . . at 6! I explained that I was terrified he'd choke because his verbal tics would happen even when he was trying to swallow. He also couldn't pick anything up until he'd done some fluttering with his hands. He developed OCD and also needed to use the bathroom every 20 minutes. It went on all day, every day. Once he got diagnosed with PANDAS and put on antibiotics, all his symptoms completely disappeared within 48 hours. I got a doctor who understood PANDAS and knows to put him on antibiotics the second they start up again, and 9 years later he hasn't had another large episode like that. I really feel for you going through this long-haul. I hope someday they find a cure for Tourette's. Thank you for educating us all with your videos.

The poor classmates, many people struggle tremendously with sudden noises, sensory overload, staying concentrated/being attentive, often either due to being neurodivergent, (C)PTSD or traumatised, anxiety etc, yet it's "ableist" to admit that verbal or otherwise loud tics are disruptive, scary etc.
Her class clearly doesn’t mind, and if you have every watched her videos, you would know they are perfectly fine with having a student with Tourette Syndrome in their class. Also, nobody said its ableist to admit those things, you’re just another person speaking of things you hardly know about in an attempt to “be different.”

mine do too! but i can (i think zara was doing this too) quieten my tics so they arent as loud but then it makes them more frequent but they get worse during quiet rooms because it makes you anxious!!

I was wondering how difficult it is for you to concentrate in class or doing your homework. Does it interfere your concentration when you try to focus on something like listening when someone is explaining something or you trying to focus or trying to do something. I have tics myself and my mother and siblings hate it and ask me to stop. I tell them I can't. I've tried to stop it myself but I naturally can't. And then I went to the doctors for an appointment with them and my mother was saying that I have those tics a out 10 months old at the time and then he said it might be mild stage of torrets syndrome. I'm not yet like diagnosed with it but he made a report of the meeting.
Don't judge ANYONE and don't stop them of being themselves!!

I also have Tourettes Syndrome, I feel you. Luckily mine is controlled by a powerful med, but it's still there. Like I keep rubbing my nose with my right hand - with my pointer finger. I can't stop speaking my mind's thoughts, I sound out ck and guh, case in point, I have similar tics like you. You are not alone, we are in this together!

I’ve never been exposed to Tourettes thats worse than a couple similar face tics. These videos really have helped me learn a lot.
