I scored an old school Hummin Bird wand style finder that attaches to the side of the boat. Used by an elderly couple when they would go canoing. Took very good care of it except they stored the batteries in it and the battery case corroded out. Several weeks of conflicting information, I finally found a fishing repair place and they had a replacement battery case for the specific modle... Loaded it in and crossed my fingers... IT LIVES!!! We use ours mostly for watching the bottom and for weed beds. I love how it shows not only fish, but if you swivvle around, it will tell you how far away you are from them (like watching a clock face). Its old but I still love it.
I’ve always struggled with interpreting fish finder screens, but your breakdown of the different sonar readings makes it so much clearer.💯 Thanks for the great tips, Nat!
This really helped me get my head around what my Garmin Striker was displaying, which is a simplified fish finder connected to my phone via Bluetooth. I have to say it has opened my eyes up on the depth and underwater conditions especially on my local rivers as in I have found fish where I did not expect them to be as well as Salmon shoals later in the season, making me sure it is worth the effort as well as the depths which had me scratching my head in disbelief as I would never have expected such depths.
Yeah you'll float over spots that you've gone past dozens of times and find all kinds of interesting dropoffs, holes, structure, etc. that you never realized were there.
I don't own a fish finder nor do I expect I will however, it is always a pleasure to watch another of Nat's videos and learn a little more. Always look forward to the next video from Nat.
Thanks - I really appreciate that. 🙂 You don't need a fish finder to catch fish. It's just another tool in the toolbox that can provide extra information to find them. I'm an analytical person so I like all the interesting data that it provides. Sometimes it just shows you all of the fish that you can't catch!
@@FishingwithNat Just wanted to ask if we will be getting or could get a "The life of a carp and how to catch it" soon. It sounds kind of stupid as they are trash to most people but where I live in Indiana they are very invasive and as a fisherman I would like to help keep these populations in anyways I can. Once again, love your vids and keep up the good work for new generations 😊
@@naturenut-m8r Yes, I plan to do a Life of the Carp video. The story of carp is very complicated! They are treated like royalty in parts of their native range, and treated like garbage as an invasive fish in other areas. Some people love to fish for them (and eat them), and others turn up their noses at the idea of intentionally fishing for carp and would never consider eating them. But yes, I've been working on developing a Life of the Carp video and will likely finish it this winter.
@@naturenut-m8r Just saw the second part of your comment. I don't encounter black carp around here, although they occasionally show up. Bighead and silver carp are becoming more common along the Mississippi River in WI. Grass carp are rare. Common carp are everywhere. I focused on capturing footage of common carp, but I would like to target bighead and silver carp next year and spend some time filming them above and below water.
Heya Nat!! I got my step dads boss's fishing set and right now it's flounder season in Norway, so I want to know if u could make a video about flounder fishing!! If not it's totally fine
I appreciate the suggestion but I don't have any experience fishing for flounder, nor do I have any place near me to capture any underwater footage of them. I really enjoy making my "Life of a Fish" videos but I like to film each species underwater a lot for the videos and I want to have a lot of experience fishing for that species before making a video about them.
Can u do some more “Life of the [___] and how to catch one”? Some requests for these are Black Crappie Muskie Rainbow Trout Lake Trout Common Carp Rock Bass Striped Bass etc These would be cool to see tbh. Hopefully ur doing alright
I'm planning to do most of these. I was filming many of these species this past summer and fall and ran out of open water when winter came in with a vengeance. I'm hoping to capture some more footage in the spring and put more of these videos together. Thanks for the suggestions.
So, to be even more of a beginner, the radar shows an image from the side/profile below the boat, not from above? That's why the depth is so useful? Is there a version/way to see fish from above, in case more fish are to the left or right? Or is that usually not necessary/helpful?
Yes, the screen shows a view that basically represents looking under your boat from a side view. A view from above is sort of what sidescan shows, almost like you're hovering over your boat and looking far to the left and right of the boat. There's another type of sonar called Humminbird 360 (there are probably other brands with similar technology) that give you an overhead view in all directions from your boat.
I made one on snaps and snap swivels, but not swivels specifically. What are your questions about them? Here's a link to the snaps/snap swivels video: ua-cam.com/video/jnWR7ZtpeWg/v-deo.html
I have not but I looked it up to learn more. Based on the product image, it looks like the "red worms" are "bloodworms", which are a type of midge that is commonly eaten by things like panfish, suckers, carp, sturgeon, and catfish. If the product is truly liquified bloodworms, it probably will stimulate a feeding response in species that normally would feed on bloodworms. I wouldn't expect it to have much effect on species that eat larger prey.
@ , it’s unfortunate that no legit reviews are on there or it’s in a foreign language hahaha. This’ll be a cool idea for fishing video though, various scented lures for fishing, fact or myth type of thing 😅. Again love your videos and can’t wait for more!
One thing I'd add for beginners is, a fish laying right on the bottom may not show on your screen. I don't know why, but this is especially true if the bottom is sloped. If you see a promising drop off, but no marks, it may be worth dropping a lure or bait anyway.
Good point. Some fish finders have a mode where you can zoom in along the bottom to see whether there is separation between the bottom and a mark on the screen. But you're right - fish are very hard to detect if they're right on the bottom, especially if they are next to other cover too.
I was in the middle of several videos and then the ice came on quickly, before I got all of the footage I wanted. So I'm having to pivot to a different topic and might have to wait on the others until spring.
Thank you for being my favorite Chanel for finding actually good info ❤

Great video! After using both types of fish finders do you have favorite one for kayak fishing?
I really like my Helix 7 but it's too big for smaller kayaks. It works well on my PDL120. I still like the Striker for my smaller kayak.
How do you tell what kind of fish is there, like at 4:14 when you say it's Crappies. I'm assuming personal expertise, but how do you know?
In that case, it was because I caught some and put a camera down to check out the school.
Happy thanksgiving
Same to you!
Nice
Thanks

You should test the double San Diego Jam not. I thinks that’s what it’s called when you double the line through the eye and end up with 3 tag ends.
That's a good, solid knot. Only one tag end on it though - maybe you're thinking of a different knot?
