Cooney was a fine fighter with a remarkable left hook, but he had a glass jaw (as heavyweight contenders go) and never seemed to be able to clear his head and figure out how to stay out of harm's way once he got really clocked. One of the most devastating punches I've ever seen was old-timer George Foreman knocking Cooney into another dimension of space and time with the wickedest uppercut I've ever seen.

    • @thomasgrady9447

Yes. Cooney had been down right before that punch and never saw it coming. Imagine being unprepared for a George Foreman uppercut.

I remember when Cooney v Foreman happened. That final left he knocked Gerry out with was the most casual ko punch ever landed! He strolled up to Cooney like he was meeting him in the park, then ‘bam!’ 💥🥊

Just think what a 1987 Gerry Cooney could have been if he actually liked boxing and would have lived clean, trained hard, and fought legitimate contenders in the 5 years that followed the Holmes fight to this one. Instead, Cooney spent those 5 years in bars drinking, the occasional straw up his nose, rarely doing serious training or improving, and only 3 quick knockouts against tomato cans as his entire fighting resume in the 5 years since the Holmes fight. To hear Gerry talk about his past, his father constantly berated him, called him a loser, and told him he'd always be a failure, and they built him up so much before the Holmes fight, that he must have saw himself as a failure after the fight. What he should have done is been proud that he gave one of the best Heavyweight champs there ever was a heck of a fight as a young contender, and that he still had many ways he could improve while having thunder in his left hook. Alas, we'll never know what could have been, but great fighters need to have it in the inside as much as they do on the outside, and to hear Gerry talk about it looking back on his life, he never really cared about boxing all that much, doing it as much to seek his father's approval than for his own dreams.

Some times, not always. There's another old saying, it's not the size of the Dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight inside the Dog. The most dangerous Heavyweights I ever knew, were 6' and under. That's from personal experience. Funniest moment in boxing history .
Leon being interviewed after beating Ali for the crown.
‘’ I was like a cobra out there. See? I was amazing. He couldn’t touch me. I was wonderous!’’’
      Yep.
ThAts right up there in funny moments in boxing history with Bert coopers interview on live tv. after smokin Bert nearly ko’d Holyfield in his fight with Evander.
Where we find Bert being interviewed after the glorious fight he had with the real deal .
      Interviewer says,
‘’Um bert, it looked like you had Holyfield in trouble in round four.
How come you couldn’t finish him off?
Why you just stop punching ?
      Bert?’’’
      To which bert brilliantly replies,
      ‘’’uh?
      Umm? Uh ? Ummm? Uh? I a? Um? Uh,,, I a? I , I , I ah? I Don’t know!😮’
Truly the most brilliant response I ever heard a fighter or actually anyone ever give while being interviewed on live tv.
Almost as good a statement as when Bert decided to quit in round two in Bert’s glorious fight against George foreman.
Where fight officials asked bert if he wanted to continue after being pummeled by foreman in round one.
To which bert gloriously righteously replied,
“I ain’t goin out there and getting hit by anymore of them punches .
      He’s a big guy. I might get hurt .’’’
      Good call.
      Bert.
      Good call.
      That’s using your noggin logically.
      Exactly.
      Yes.
      Exactly.
      In truth.

He wasn't half the fighter Holyfield was. Spinks also followed through with his elbow quite a bit, disguising it so he could cheat...

Mitch Blood Green was a little better than a journeyman and went the distance with Tyson and even cracked him hard a few times. People make Tyson out to be the GOAT, but I was alive and well and an ex-boxer at the time of Tyson's prime, and while he was great and would topple anyone in the HW division now, I sincerely doubt he'd run right through a prime Ali, Foreman, Louis. Even little Marciano would have a puncher's chance because that Suzie Q punch of Marciano's was right there with Tyson's best punch.

@@speakthetruth5308 It's well known that Cooney spent a LOT more time in bars and coke ridden after parties in the 5 years between the Holmes fight and this one than he did in the gym. He never really cared for the sport, and for all intents and purposes, his blossoming career was over after he lost to Holmes. Only 3 fights against tomato cans from 1982 to 1987 can attest to that, but once he needed money again, he decided to cash in again while he still was marketable. Why you think that reality of a statement is some sort of ruse to make the poster "feel better" is rather weird. Being a top level fighter is as much mental as it is physical, and there are thousands of fighters who had top level ability who for whatever reason no longer had the intestinal fortitude to train, fight, and still be a top level fighter anymore. If you need a shining example of that, simply watch the great Aaron Pryor fight Bobby Joe Young after a few years of partying, or the end of Riddick Bowe's career.

Cooney was a good fighter with incredible knockout power in his lead left hand, because he was a natural lefty fighting in a righty stance. But he was too slow and methodical to defeat the best fighters of his time. His punching power carried him against the three guys on the downside of their careers that he beat to set him up for the fight with Holmes. But once in the ring with a guy like Holmes whose powerful jab was so fast that most fighters didn't see it until it was making contact with their heads, Cooney could not beat Holmes to the punch and it was amazing that Cooney lasted 13 rounds in that fight.
I think that the Holmes fight wrecked Cooney's confidence in himself that he could ever be a champion. He never developed the hand speed he would need to compete at the highest levels as his punching power diminished with age. Which is why he lost to a glorified light heavyweight like Michael Spinks. It just shows how difficult it was to become a heavyweight champion, you needed speed and power to win titles. Even Tyson with his incredible punching power had hand speed that made most heavyweights jealous. Foreman was one of the only heavyweights to defy that rule, and only because he had such exceptional power. But as was seen in Zaire, once the power was exhausted - in that case due to the climate of the fight's location and a poor fight plan by Foreman - he was not a difficult fighter to defeat. Whereas a young Ali, who did not have exceptional punching power, could defeat all his opponents with the most amazing speed any heavyweight ever displayed.
For heavyweights, it doesn't take a lot of power to knock an opponent on his keister. But you have to get the punch(es) to the target, which is why speed is the quintessential quality needed to be a heavyweight champion. You need natural albeit average heavyweight power, but its the speed that you project that power with that determines whether you will be a champion. Holyfield was the paradigm of this reality, average heavyweight power but above average speed that made him a champion. Cooney didn't have speed and never developed it, which is why his career stopped short of winning a title.

He was lucky that Jimmy Young got cut and the fight was stopped. Young had his number and would have thwarted Cooney's fight with Holmes , had Young not been cut badly.
Cooney was done after the Holmes fight. Larry took his heart. He realized he could no longer left hook his way to victory against a real fighter. When he would throw the left hook to the body he left himself wide open 2:48 Spinks and Foreman at 41, exposed his lack of defense once again.

You might have written one of the dumbest things I've ever read on the internet, and that's really saying something. Michael Spinks won a Gold Medal at the 1976 Olympics as part of the legendary '76 US team, he then went pro where he won the WBA Light-Heavyweight title by defeating a very good Eddie Mustafa Muhammad. He would defend his Light Heavyweight title 10 times, including a title unification win against the great Dwight Qawi (formerly Dwight Braxton, the vanquisher of Matthew Saad Muhammad), and is regarded as one of the best Light Heavyweight champions of all time. Then, he moved up to Heavyweight and beat the undefeated 48-0 legendary Larry Holmes who was Heavyweight champ for 7 years and had TWENTY successful title defenses (personally I thought he lost both fights against Holmes but that's besides the point) to become the Heavyweight champion. So with all of these accolades and career accomplishments, you think his last fight, where he cashed in for a huge purse and got KO'd in the first round against a young savage Mike Tyson was his career "highlight"? That's an odd take, even for an idiot.

In a way Cooney would have been better suited to the modern, current era where bigger slower guys fight at a slower pace and 12 not 15 rounds as the 70s and early 80s fights were. Could probably have weighed around 250 or so at a similar size to Vitali Klitschko.

Imagine what Mike Tyson would've done to Cooney, I think 15 second KO

    Shades of Fury vs Usyk??
Obviously, Tyson Fury is MILES better an operator than Cooney! No question!!
But Spinks, just as slippery and quick, if not quicker than Oleksander...
    🤔🥊👑

I liked Michele. Leon was just a trouble making thug. Even after becoming champ he was still getting in trouble. I don't really know about Mickeal.
