Ken Norton and Gerry Cooney talking trash about Cobb the whole time is kinda funny. Norton was KOd by Shavers in 1 Round.. And Holmes KOd Cooney.. but couldn't Cobb. And Cobb was laying a beating on Shavers at the end.
Tex Cobb was no joke Granted Holmes beat the sh*t out of him but Holmes was a beast starting his career 48-0
Horrible ring surface. Both fighters sliding all over.Shavers clearly wasn't in shape.
36-years of age is old for a fighter; especially a heavyweight. And a fighter like Shavers generally looks to be poorly conditioned bcuz they put every fiber of their being into almost every punch they throw. This was on the undercard of of Hearns vs. Cuevas; same day, different site of: Cervantes vs. Pryor.
Shavers would've beat Cobb, even three years earlier. Yeah, the ring was slick. I kept thinking of that Paul Simon song, 'ya know the nearer your destination, the more you're slip slidin' away'... oh well, Earnie did have some good moments in that bout.
I hate to disrespect "Tex" Cobb in any way, but I don't think Shavers was punching with his previous power....not that he wasn't giving 100% effort.
Tex was always underated . He has an amazing record of 16-0 and I think he was never knocked down yet . He had great power with both hands and all who fought him say that . He also has a head that can take more than most hits . Just my 2 cents worth. cheers and merry xmas
funny...the commentators never mention the beating earnie took in the first round
perfectly stated
I saw Randy Tex Cobb fight at Atlantic City in late 1979 and he had a devastating punch. Wish he had gone further because he really hit hard.
Cobb had no punch but he compensated with a chin of iron.
Earlier in his boxing career, Earnie Shavers was a formidable heaviest puncher. However, in some of his matches including this one against Randall, he was overly fatigued than anything else. It seemed that later rounds were at his disadvantage.
