He is grieving and her heart is breaking for not being able to comfort him as she always did. This song is almost 20 years old now and came out when I was in my early 20's. It's a song that defiantly hits harder today. Back then, to me it was just a great song by an awesome singer, now it's a powerful emotional song. I can now relate to the lyrics, but not just towards a specific loss or relationship with someone, but towards my memories, my moments, and my mind. The older we get, the more the memories hurt, not just the sad and/or bad ones, like losing a loved ones, as I have lost both my parents over the last twelve years, but the good ones also, like having a wonderful childhood, first getting marriage, your children's births and them being young, these memories of life, moments of time, will never be as great as it once was, as certain moments that will never be experienced again like they were when we lived them. My memories, both happy and sad, are slowly killing me as I can't let go and depend on them so much.

You guys are under the same misinterpretation as many other people, so I'll try to clear up the message. The song is actually about the death of a loved one, and how all of the memories you had with them are now haunting and seem like a curse. Being inescapable and painful, and it feeling as though they took a part of you with them. And while their memory lives on within you, you still feel alone. Sometimes even feeling hatred for the person in the mind's pitiful attempt to allow you to accept the death and move on without them. It's a very tragic thing to experience, and unfortunately I know the feeling far too well. It has nothing to do with a relationship turned sour.

It’s works. Was never my interpretation, but it works just as well as mine.
The one thing that doesn't make sense is when she sings, "your presence still lingers here." It makes it sound like he's the one who passed away.
Also, you’ll notice that no one ever looks at her or sees her.
