I was in the hospital in 2017 for a month. Which i had become a pin cushion during the day and I couldn’t sleep at night. So I love bluegrass and Americanas. So at I would stream music came across Sara Jarosz. I feel like a stalker cause there is nothing she couldn’t sing with such a charisma that has me wanting to hear and see everything she has done. And Chris Thile I found him and Nickel creek . And now I follow them all. I am so glad that in my lifetime to hear such greatness. There is so much music out there to find and to lift you up. Sara and Chris are apart of that genre. Thank you and keep on playing you are loved.
This is a stunning piece of art! I don't know what Chris did in the solo at the end... nobody has ever breached that level of dissonance and returned! It sends ripples of electricity through my tendrils
If you haven't seen the latter versions of this song live by Gillian and David, you may want to amend your statement! Lol. ua-cam.com/video/wTpE1wUFI8g/v-deo.html
So good! If there was a full Gillian Welch tribute album by Sarah and Chris I would buy it immediately Also, Brittany Haas is such a good musician. That violin solo was amazing
Can we talk about that whole band for a moment? Sarah Jarosz, Chris Thile, Brittany Haas, Critter Eldridge, Mike Elizondo, Rich Dworsky AND Ted Friggin Poor???!!! This is a lineup we should be gushing over 20 years from now. An incredible assemblage of musicians.
My admiration of Gillian Welch traces back to Live From Here. When the show would cover a song I liked I would go back and listen to the original. More times than not - I find myself liking the LFH cover version better. This one is tough - because I like both so much. The Gillian Welch BBC4 concert at St Lukes is one of my favorite videos - and David Rawlings unleashes that blistering guitar solo at the end of Time the Revelator that is one for the ages. On this one - Sarah’s vocal is both tender and powerful at the same time and the full band treatment (from a killer ensemble) adds a lot. I’ve listened to each dozens of times and can’t pick a favorite - love them both
That BBC show is the most magical v of this song. DR's guitar (isnt like a 1935 Epiphone?) pretty much bends time and space. It has the most glorious tone and the whole performance seems more visceral and harmed. It's unbelievable.
I love her voice. This song, along with Chris’s matching voice, was perfect. Something about this just worked, like a sensory overflow moment. This is now my favorite song. I switch between this and Gillian W / David R version from UA-cam’s bbc recording. Both are beautiful.
Damn Chris, man I've listened to this cover 4 times in a row. Just great. Remember playing with you in the quad at Murray state (and you writing some of my music theory homework for me lol) so proud of you. Kentucky boy all the way. Your success is so deserved. For all that read this, Chris is one of the most kind, and genuine, human beings you will ever meet. BTW I still have your brass capo you left in my dorm room. Happy to return it to you.
Chris Thile is absolutely correct, it is never a bad idea to play a Gillian Welch song. Thanks for sharing this latest beautiful voice adding to the chorus of awesome. 🌈💗😎
Excellent, agreed. The violin solo was almost like (but different) Zappa and a horn section doing Stairway to Heaven. Sounds crazy, but great musicians can do the magic. Sarah's vocals were great. This is not a slam, but Chris's harmonies don't compare with the original. Of course Welch and Rawlins had at least a decade to practice together.
I listen to her every day. I've seen her in concert in Houston 3 times and will see her as many times as possible. She is a fantastic player and a beautiful singer. I hope we can soon have concerts again, soon.
you two match so perfectly. When I saw you (NC) at the Wiltern LA some 16 or 18 years ago, I had already been your fan for years; I love you more when i see this than I did when I got a photo with Chris out in Sedona AZ with my punk rock girl friend. Bring this weekly love back. I miss you. And I insisted on staying for the photo.
They don’t match it though. No band, not playing instruments. Rawlings and Welch are Another level. You’ve seen the BBC live version. Nothing ever beats that.
I love that Rich has stayed on. He adds such essential texture to so many pieces. His B3 on a rendition of "Ring Them Bells" that Sarah Jarosz did on the show a while back was just transcendent.
This is such a personal song from Gillian that no one else could come close to doing it justice. They perform well, but Gillian and Dave are the ones who make this so incredibly personal, emotional, and special.... because it IS theirs.
It's not often you'll hear Chris Thile play a song and think "Nope, you'd never have come up with those tonalities yourself". He's playing beautifully, he always plays beautifully, but he sounds like Dave Rawlings playing mandolin. That in itself is a huge compliment, but it just shows, you cannot fully put your own stamp on some of the Welch and Rawlings repertoire without losing the song. Listen to those little chromatic 4 fret run downs, the dissonances - it's Dave.
Darling remember when you come to me I'm the pretender, I'm not what I'm supposed to be. But who could know, if I'm a traitor? Time's the revelator. They caught the Katy, and left me a mule to ride. The fortune lady came along, she walked beside. But every word seemed to date her. Time's the revelator, the revelator. Up in the morning up and on the ride. I drive in to Corning and all the spindles whine. And every day is getting straighter. Time's the revelator, the revelator. Leaving the valley, up and out of sight. I'll go back to Cali where I can sleep out every night. And watch the waves and move the fader. Time's the revelator, the revelator. Queen of fakes and imitators Time's the revelator.
Very good cover indeed, exactly what I would have expected from this group of incredible musicians. However (dare I even say it), the song missed that element of "urgency" that Rawlings brings to this song (and many of their songs). He is literally on top of the tempo as if he is pulling Gillian through the song. Just look how Gillian is standing there all relaxed, just steady as a rock and right next her is Rawlings who looks as if he is going to jump out of his skin. Like he just can't wait to play the note! It is that stark contrast in their deliveries that make their music so incredible. ua-cam.com/video/4gEc5Pq50xo/v-deo.html
Sarah is amazing and carries this but no one does justice to DR guitar work. LIke not even close. LIke a different sport. LIke me, a middle age white dude, trying to play a scalett johansson role.
Hardly. Chris Eldridge has a solo at the ~3:00 mark, Brittany Haas with the violin at ~4:00 both are brilliant. Actually Chris' mandolin is non existent until his amazing concluding solo at around the 6:00 mark. Your comment is the only thing weak here.
It's not "weak." It's different. To make a cover identical-sounding to the original version is pointless. Good songs lend themselves well to re-arrangements, and this is a fine example.
I was in the hospital in 2017 for a month. Which i had become a pin cushion during the day and I couldn’t sleep at night. So I love bluegrass and Americanas. Man, what an arrangement-thoughtful, sensitive, emotionally articulate. Whew!

Yes please.
Brittany actually played with Gillian and Dave on the Dave Rawlings Machine album Nashville Obsolete.
This channel is a infinite source of happiness. Thanks guys for doing this.
Awesome performance. I thought that mandolin might catch on fire at the end.

My very favourite version of Revelator as well! Killer version of The Weight with OCMS as well.

This doesn't surprise me. He radiates a kind, curious, gentle soul. Makes the music even sweeter

An absolutely incredible performance and recording.
Love the violinist interpretation. Genius. 4:08 the magic begins
Jen Morricone 💪Brittany Haas!!!!
@@hankwhitley222 recognized her immediately! Saw her playing fiddle with Dave Rawlings Machine with Gillian. She's phenomenal on this performance!

She has a beautiful voice. Never beats the live bbc version. Rawlings playing is just phenomenal.
This captures the essence of the song beautifully
Awesome interpretation.I've never heard anyone except Gillian and Dave do this song.
You should hear warren haynes and railroad earth

Me either..it is an ambitous song for anyone to take on and they did it a great justice!
Can't wait for the new Jarosz-Thile album coming out in 2019. OK... I made that up.
would be nice
Thank you guys, that was beautiful...

just saying she was ready to go. you were my idols forever. I Love Sarah and You both
And then Thile rips out a soul shredding solo... good god.
Hard to believe anyone could match Gillian and David Rawlings doing this song, but there you go.
They don’t match it though. No band, not playing instruments. Rawlings and Welch are Another level. You’ve seen the BBC live version. Nothing ever beats that.
I loved seeing how Rich Dworsky was there to undergird every note of Chris's solo at the end.
I love that Rich has stayed on. He adds such essential texture to so many pieces. His B3 on a rendition of "Ring Them Bells" that Sarah Jarosz did on the show a while back was just transcendent.

Just loved that, thank you for choosing this! I was just thinking the other day that I would love to hear Sarah sing this one.
These people are just so darned good. They don't fail to please.
Absolutely stunning
Yes stunning
I demand an album or EP version of this!
Chris and Sarah need to make a record together.
As "He's With Her" 😁
I’m with her

I like this version the most 🥰
Is there anything Sarah can't sing beautifully?
These harmonies.
I cannot get over how good of a mandolin player he is. I mean jeez he makes it look so damn easy.
This album is so heavy. It's stripped down, slowed down metal. This version shows that off.
What the freak was that Chris? 🔥🔥🔥
Also, gotta love Sarahs voice, so beautiful ❤️
I'd love to hear these guys play some Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer songs.
Wunderschön - da habt Ihr aber was gezaubert !!

Wow.....just WOW!!
Anyone still doubting that Chris is one of the best musicians alive?
He is a great editor & collaborator. The new format of the show took a little getting used to, but I still listen every chance I get.
What a voice!
Love makes me love the meaning of to love!
Critter for the WIN! ...got that D-28 sounding like Rawlings parlors!!
sweet. love it.
Glad they kept true to the style.
SOOOOO Good!
Stunning!
Where are we going to find this magic now?
I'm still looking. Saturday evening just isn't the same.
I love 'I'm With Her' but I hate how it's taken Aoife and Sarah out of rotation this season. I've missed Sarah dearly.
they have both had babies
It's Aoife and Sara Watkins who had babies.
As much as I like Chris' introduction, when you loop this video it gets repetitive, skip to 0:50. Or press "1" followed by "L".

I guess they can't say "leaving the valley, and fucking out of sight"
Leaving the valley and fucking out of sight
They bombed that song out great job.
Fuckin... out of sight!!!!
4:08 if Dave Rawlings played violin 👍

Simply the shit
Holeeee smokes.
Is this better than the original??
badfishy911 but every song needs that!
This band is SO GOOD.
no
Those are fighting words but it is indeed a brilliant cover.
No.
Everything they touch turns to gold not that this wasn't gold to begin with
All l can say is MAN!!!!

again at 5:52, i enjoyed it up until then. please don't ruin it; it makes no sense that you would be so angry with your lead.
Good job but the original is unbeatable...

But they really have to stop using those hooted mikes, vocals are muffled
Again freak dude stop spazing out on your lead. Totally disrespectful to sarah.

This is not Welch and Rawlings. It's a mandolin driven cover. Weak.
