      Of all the artists I've listened to over the past forty years, these two have turned out some of the most spellbinding tunes. And they've done it more than a few times. So hauntingly beautiful, it’s like thousands of years of human collective consciousness went into this song because the perfect dissonances create such an emotional reaction that the words are superfluous, ultimately. One hears the chords and immediately understands that the song is about suffering and not wanting to anymore, ever again.

    • @brucekreitzberg7876
      @brucekreitzberg7876 Рік тому +2

      That was nicely written. Lyrically, I think some of the words harken to both great moments and some of their worst, like being called a fake or an imitator just because she chose to play music she was not raised around. I suspect that was painful for her for a while, but she has continued doing what she loves and cares for and millions have enjoyed it. I think she's the bee's knees and David Rawlings is too.

    Possibly their best UA-cam performance - the venue and the closeness and attentiveness of the audience seems to have had a remarkable impact on the intensity of this amazing song's performance. Dave's solo is a mind blower and Gillian's singing and zen-like rhythm playing is absolutely breathtaking.

    • @kerthgersen3163
      @kerthgersen3163 7 років тому +5

      "Zen-like". Nice. It shows that perfection is better attained by simplicity than complexity, not to mention the 'beefy' Gibson sound completing the sonic spectrum with David's Epiphone.

      I agree. I have seen these guys live 4-5 times and watched dozens of their videos on UA-cam and I think this BBC 4 production is them at their best as a duo. They seem to have taken it seriously, the lighting is great and of course - it's BBC - the recording and the sound are perfect. Their performance of Jacob Meyer at this show is intense and almost breathtaking.

    These two are amazing to watch live - they start to really get into what they’re doing about midway through their concerts and that’s when they magic is made. Each performance feels unique - they add little twists and flourishes to the melodies.

    I think I've watched every uploaded video of this arrangement and this one is the best. Rawlins is perfect throughout, stunning at the finale and Welch is at her very best all the way through.What a duo! What a piece! What a treat it must be to have seen this live. Blessed are all of you have been there to absorb it!!!!

    Dave's solo in this performance is full of amazing improvised bits, like the looping thing on 2:12, or an arpeggio on 3:59. My favorite version of the tune...

    The tone he gets out of that prewar arch top is unreal. Super performance. Harmony, songwriting, everything. All I keep looking at is that guitar.

    Rawlings is a master at using dissonance. Studying at the Berklee School of Music is a good reason for his brilliance. Listen to his guitar lines. Nobody plays like he. Positively original style. Hard to be original. But the dissonance is incredible.

    • @koho
      @koho 6 років тому +7

      His dissonance gets a lot of comments, but more amazing to me is the consistently inventive melodic lines. I think his is even better displayed on, say, Scarlet Town and Tennessee.

      I've invented a new term. I call it "aharmonic" (long A). It's different than true dissonance, and it describes what David does perfectly.

    Darling, remember
    When you come to me
    I'm the pretender
    And not what I'm supposed to be
    But who could know if I'm a traitor
    Time's the revelator
    They caught the katy
    And left me a mule to ride
    The fortune lady
    Came along, she walked beside
    But every word seemed to date her
    Time's the revelator
    The revelator
    Up in the morning
    Up and on the ride
    I drive into Corning
    And all the spindles whine
    And every day is getting straighter
    Time's the revelator
    The revelator
    Leaving the valley
    And fucking out of sight
    I'll go back to Cali
    Where I can sleep out every night
    And watch the waves and move the fader
    Time's the revelator
    The revelator
    Queen of the fakes and imitators
    Time's the revelator
