RE: Horsecrazy953 1 hour ago Who cares about sheepskin
I want to thank you for the fly mask tip!!! Hadn't thought of that and it's a really good idea!!! I also really appreciate the saddle info. Some i knew some i didn't, especially the turned stirrups. A lot of what you talked about is info you get due to experience and I thank you for sharing it with us!!
@WhitetailHurt : I got this from a site and it seems about right: semi- quarter horse bars - 6 1/2 gullet is by far the most common tree. it is for the medium back, decent wither and often mixed blood descent (1/2 arab, Appendix or other mixes) full quarter horse bars- (7" gullet) is often used for blocky low withered quarter horses or horses with broad backs.END I would rather too wide with a good pad then too narrow which pinches and puts pressure.
I just realized that the saddle I have is a cheap Western saddle. Well then, time to save up money and buy an expensive one :D I mean, a cheap saddle is better than none (For the horse's spine anyway). (Only got experience with "English saddles" so this was very helpful, thank you Rick!)
THANK YOU! Haha my husband gives me grief that I bought another inexpensive saddle locally after having him drive with me 4 hours away to buy a really nice one. It's because the horse wasn't as broke as I was told and would try to rub the saddle off on the nearest fence, tree, or whatever. I bought the cheaper one so he could find out for himself that it wouldn't work. Now I have a young mustang that is relaxed with just about anything if I let her nibble or paw at it first. I like to let horses experiment with their gear, which means getting chewed and torn sometimes, so having some junky stuff around is useful.
how the saddle should fit the horse - I would love to see how you think the saddle should fit - on the horse. and reviews on types of saddles - what type is better for trail riding - there are so many types of western saddles. what's your thoughts on the stock saddle? I'm out for buying a saddle. not easy in Denmark, small market.
I noticed that western blankets are much thicker than the english ones. Im learning more and more that western focus much more on horsemanship and the comfort if both the horse and the rider than english. I think that may be because english is more about pretty and show and western is more about trail rides and cattle. Makes sense that itd be more about comfort. When i started going out more in trail rides i learnt to loosen the reins (i was taught to always keep then tight) and the stirrups to avoid back and leg pain for me and neck pain for the horse.
@Iwishonedayy : It depends, if you pad is thick a thick blanket could make it tighter on the horse, if the blanket is thin then it is mainly for looks, if you pad it thin, then the blanket could give extra padding.
not from Rick, he's probably busy. But I thought about it more and realized that when I wear a heavy backpack, I prefer a rigid frame. Flexy ones let me move better but tire my muscles, which hurts my back, hips & knees. Also did some more research and someone apparently did some pressure tests on some brand of flex saddle, and the flex put pressure on the horse's back concentrated under the human's sit bones. So IMO a rigid saddle that fits well, with quality wool padding, is probably better.
I love to look in pawn shops for good saddles that are broke in... You can pick up a $1000 saddle for $200 some times... and I dont have to break in the leather
Gotta do some more research on saddles for this horse at my barn. He's some kind of Arabian crossed with something else but I want him to be as comfortable as possible. If you have any leads for saddles with higher withers that would be great!
I know it is not about 'the look' and here comes the BUT lol but your saddle looks really comfy for you both as in life...9/10 you get what you pay for. Buddy...Mr T...Rick...you are THE BEST 💙 💙 💙
the biggest thing to avoid when buying pads( and even some saddles) is gel. the concept behind her was a good idea BUT they neglected the fact that when gel is compressed (like between a saddle and horse) it acts like concrete. don't buy gel. Any experience I've had with mohair, I've given horses sores from it after it starts to soak up sweat, neoprene doesn't do that, so a long a you keep it clean and don't keep the saddle sucked tight all the time, neoprene can be the better option.
@RodeoHorsey : Never used gel don't know much about them. Sheepskin is normally thicker and you can feel the difference, the maker should tell you if they use real sheepskin or go to a saddle shop and feel them both you tell the difference pretty fast.
I ride with a real sheep skin covered gel pad under the saddle, between the saddle and the blanket. That’s as well as the usual sheepskin lining on the underside of the saddle, so basically sheepskin on sheepskin. I’ve also got a gel seat saver pad on the saddle and a sheepskin seat saver over that as well. Oh… and a sheepskin covered girth haha
Hello Rick and the good boys and Smokey. I'm learning a lot from your videos. I appreciate your doing them. I have 2 questions if you would please speak to. I live in Canada and I keep wondering how do you deal with the snakes and your horses? I'm concerned for your boys being bit. Secondly, in extreme cold, frost bite in a couple of minutes, would you consider blanketing your horse? Thank you for your time and have a great evening? Kim
Hannah Steffes it also depends on what you're looking for and what's available. Quality and condition are very important, as well as fit for horse and rider. Both parties need to be happy as well.
@horseawareness- you said you prefer wool girths to neoprene, do you feel the same about the pads with neoprene? My horse is rather round in the back and the pads sometimes slip back a bit. He is a little higher in the withers. I was thinking the neoprene may avoid this from happening. Any thoughts? Thanks for your help and all the info you put out there.
Thicker, last longer, more natural, breathes better, more padding. You get what you pay for, there is a reason real sheep skin cost more and the other stuff is cheaper. RE: 17horseylover17 I'm not be rude just trying to figure things out but what good does real sheepskin do better than fake kind if you had a pad under it?
Never thought of that for mesh stuff, i used to have loads of the damned stuff! People in the horse world make me laugh though, at my old yard people would spend ridiculous amounts on things their horses didnt need or want (£80 every 6 weeks for a horses shoes... horse wasnt ridden for months and just stood in a field at one point, £200 on a rug that the horse would go out and trash within 10 minutes then they'd be crying that the horse trashed the expensive rug...) but won't put their hands in their pocket when it counts. Madness.
what do you think of polo wraps when working horses on the ground.. i use mine when i ung my rescue horse cuz he is really weak an he needs the extra support?? (he was starved an beat.. thats why i got him not that i needed him just i couldnt stand to see it happen to him)
Elizabeth Stolbova it depends on what's available and how it fits horse and rider. A brand new expensive saddle may not fit the horse correctly while the second hand one fits really well. Just gotta keep your eye out and see if what you find has what you're looking for.
Hi Rick, I been theorizing re: saddles for the horse I don't have yet. I don't think I like treeless saddles, as I don't believe they can distribute a rider's weight properly, but what do you think of flex tree saddles? I can't tell if they're based on REAL research, if the flex gives good weight distribution & helps the horse move more freely, or if it's all a very expensive, stupid fad. I'd wanna use what's better for the horse, whether new or old tech. Any advice? Thx!
www.statelinetack.com/item/king-basic-leather-trail-saddle-package/SLT901223/ This is the saddle I am buying, I am not going to use the bridle and saddle pad, but my sister bought the brown one and highly suggested I get the black. She uses in the arena but I need it for steep trail rides. What do you think of it? I’ve been using my trainers by using a thick pad with a red saddle rug over it (its super wide so I need more padding since my horse is a lot less round and thick than her Thoroughbred cross)and Rip (my horse) rides fine with both. I need a cheaper one since we often ride in weather conditions that are not good for saddles so we try to avoid super expensive saddles.
@horseawareness Rick is it hard to get a horse used to dogs around it feet or around at all if you have dogs or cats something like that could you make a video on how to introduce to animals I just dont want my dogs to have to be kicked to learn to stay away I want my dogs in the pasture cause we have allot of wild dogs and animals so it would help it you have the time
That Ain’t no shit❗️! Everybody around here’s answer is, “ just get a thicker blanket and it’ll fit just fine”. Never taking into account the angle of the tree on the back of the horse. Damn thing could be Setting on the bottom edge or - angled out so far that the bottom of the tree is not even on the back of the horse along the sides of the saddle . “ just as long as it fits your ass that’s what you’re looking for”. Un freaking real!!! They never check to see if the tree fits flat the entire length of the tree along the saddle edge. People should be made to wear👞 shoes that are three sizes too small! 🤣Hey, long is your foot🦶🏼 fits in it it’ll be OK! ❗️Dumbasses!❗️
Get a life and move on I can't fix stupid, stop commenting to create your drama. RE: rojaiwla Withers. And that was tried without a pad. Did not need to put the rider on, a cinched it was already too close. I am sure they did not buy a $4K saddle. I am like u and prefer to invest in good tools. There has to b decent options that are more affordable. Any sugg? At least they are light riders that won't do crazy things with him. Men are stupid.
he is not explaining anything bout a saddle the price means nothing you have to match the saddle to your horses withers weather they need quarter horse bars or something narrower
Hey I gotta new joke for you Why are they so many cults in the horse world? Because people just won't stop breeding. (get it? because cults and colts and people breeding hahahaha)

Wow amazing. I had no idea about the differences between saddles. Thank you so much Rick.

Only if it's made well enough not to cause pain!
I've been wondering for months what your saddle was. Now I finally know! It looks very comfortable for the horse.

Wooooh I just got the same saddle pad with the hole and everything during the boxing day. Now I'm proud of myself for choosing a good pad :D

Wow 4 grand for saddle. Your kind of at the bottom and the top what do you think about saddles in between.
Simple Homestead no saddle is created equally, so price typically doesn't determine quality except in some situations.
@RodeoHorsey : Never used gel don't know much about them. Sheepskin is normally thicker and you can feel the difference, the maker should tell you if they use real sheepskin or go to a saddle shop and feel them both you tell the difference pretty fast.
the wool skin never touches the horse , so I don't care either way .

My girl she rides saddleseat and we enjoy using Freedman's saddles and other products.
Truly gives to the meaning you get what ya paid for.
Rick what do you think about the big horn saddles?
Do you have a video on actually fitting a saddle to the horse?
What do u think of a western rawhide saddle, or have u not heard of them before. I dunno they r popular around this area.
One of my saddles has everything your 4 grand saddle has but I got it off facebook market place for $75
Hannah Steffes it also depends on what you're looking for and what's available. Quality and condition are very important, as well as fit for horse and rider. Both parties need to be happy as well.
I'm thinking about buying a Circle Y Walnut Grove saddle with their flex tree. What is your opinion?

I'm not be rude just trying to figure things out but what good does real sheepskin do better than fake kind if you had a pad under it?
I ride English so I was wondering if there was a better option for a cinch I could use instead of the leather one
@zsofiawulf : Not that much experience with them, as long as you got a good pad the spreads out and distributes the weight, I would think it would OK.
Thank you for posting I shared this to everyone my freinds use those crappy double t saddles until they saw this video
Thanks great information
do you have to have a back cinch?
lol i do the same thing (going through peoples trash) thats where i got my western pad.
What are your thoughts on treeless saddles? We have draft horses and tree saddles don't tend to fit the horse right and cause pressure points.
Thnx Rick...what is the diff between full QH bars and Semi QH bars?? Which is better for a broad shouldered horse (16.3 hands)..Thanks again!
Do you have a different saddle for each horse or do you use the same for both?
thank you
what do you think of polo wraps when working horses on the ground.. i use mine when i ung my rescue horse cuz he is really weak an he needs the extra support??
(he was starved an beat.. thats why i got him not that i needed him just i couldnt stand to see it happen to him)
Is it better to but a second hand saddle that is in good condition or a saddle like you have for younger horses??
Elizabeth Stolbova it depends on what's available and how it fits horse and rider. A brand new expensive saddle may not fit the horse correctly while the second hand one fits really well. Just gotta keep your eye out and see if what you find has what you're looking for.

where did you buy your saddle and pad? i found a pad that is 1 inch thick but i cant tell if its real wool
Ok. Thanks!!
Can you pease tell me where you got your stirrups twisted? Please answer, I live in Texas too!
Where did he get those metal stirrups?

Simco used to make great saddles. Looks like they've changed. I hate when that happens.
How do I attach a latigo to the saddle?
I have a vid on that
do you put horse shoes on either buddy or Mr t
+Krish Patel you haven't read Rick's website or watched enough of his video's to be asking that question...

and back strap, i cant find one that connects to the cinch
Can I ride with a blanket on top of a pad
Joel Cavazos Yes, I do, but I don’t recommend it if the saddle isn’t very wide or if it’s real hot.
I ride with a sheep skin covered gel pad under the saddle on top of the blanket. Very comfy but yea probably not ideal for very hot weather
I'm not be rude just trying to figure things out but what good does real sheepskin do better than fake kind if you had a pad under it?
what you can do with the nice one is design it to be a bareback pad
I didn't know you could tape things around a horses injery
who here purchases saddles online?
Sorry I miss spelled
