    Someone who understands it's importance and who can keep their mouth shut long enough to listen - you keep running your mouth about things you know nothing about but you should remember: It is better to be silent and thought to be a fool than open your mouth and prove it.

    I want to thank you for the fly mask tip!!! Hadn't thought of that and it's a really good idea!!! I also really appreciate the saddle info. Some i knew some i didn't, especially the turned stirrups. A lot of what you talked about is info you get due to experience and I thank you for sharing it with us!!

    @WhitetailHurt : I got this from a site and it seems about right: semi- quarter horse bars - 6 1/2 gullet is by far the most common tree. it is for the medium back, decent wither and often mixed blood descent (1/2 arab, Appendix or other mixes) full quarter horse bars- (7" gullet) is often used for blocky low withered quarter horses or horses with broad backs.END I would rather too wide with a good pad then too narrow which pinches and puts pressure.

    I just realized that the saddle I have is a cheap Western saddle. Well then, time to save up money and buy an expensive one :D I mean, a cheap saddle is better than none (For the horse's spine anyway). (Only got experience with "English saddles" so this was very helpful, thank you Rick!)

    THANK YOU! Haha my husband gives me grief that I bought another inexpensive saddle locally after having him drive with me 4 hours away to buy a really nice one. It's because the horse wasn't as broke as I was told and would try to rub the saddle off on the nearest fence, tree, or whatever. I bought the cheaper one so he could find out for himself that it wouldn't work. Now I have a young mustang that is relaxed with just about anything if I let her nibble or paw at it first. I like to let horses experiment with their gear, which means getting chewed and torn sometimes, so having some junky stuff around is useful.

    how the saddle should fit the horse - I would love to see how you think the saddle should fit - on the horse. and reviews on types of saddles - what type is better for trail riding - there are so many types of western saddles. what's your thoughts on the stock saddle? I'm out for buying a saddle. not easy in Denmark, small market.

    I noticed that western blankets are much thicker than the english ones. Im learning more and more that western focus much more on horsemanship and the comfort if both the horse and the rider than english. I think that may be because english is more about pretty and show and western is more about trail rides and cattle. Makes sense that itd be more about comfort. When i started going out more in trail rides i learnt to loosen the reins (i was taught to always keep then tight) and the stirrups to avoid back and leg pain for me and neck pain for the horse.

  • @ThinkLikeAHorse
    @ThinkLikeAHorse  14 років тому

    @Iwishonedayy : It depends, if you pad is thick a thick blanket could make it tighter on the horse, if the blanket is thin then it is mainly for looks, if you pad it thin, then the blanket could give extra padding.

    not from Rick, he's probably busy. But I thought about it more and realized that when I wear a heavy backpack, I prefer a rigid frame. Flexy ones let me move better but tire my muscles, which hurts my back, hips & knees. Also did some more research and someone apparently did some pressure tests on some brand of flex saddle, and the flex put pressure on the horse's back concentrated under the human's sit bones. So IMO a rigid saddle that fits well, with quality wool padding, is probably better.

    Gotta do some more research on saddles for this horse at my barn. He's some kind of Arabian crossed with something else but I want him to be as comfortable as possible. If you have any leads for saddles with higher withers that would be great!

    the biggest thing to avoid when buying pads( and even some saddles) is gel. the concept behind her was a good idea BUT they neglected the fact that when gel is compressed (like between a saddle and horse) it acts like concrete. don't buy gel. Any experience I've had with mohair, I've given horses sores from it after it starts to soak up sweat, neoprene doesn't do that, so a long a you keep it clean and don't keep the saddle sucked tight all the time, neoprene can be the better option.

      Simple Homestead no saddle is created equally, so price typically doesn't determine quality except in some situations.

  • @ThinkLikeAHorse
    @ThinkLikeAHorse  14 років тому +1

    @RodeoHorsey : Never used gel don't know much about them. Sheepskin is normally thicker and you can feel the difference, the maker should tell you if they use real sheepskin or go to a saddle shop and feel them both you tell the difference pretty fast.

      I ride with a real sheep skin covered gel pad under the saddle, between the saddle and the blanket. That’s as well as the usual sheepskin lining on the underside of the saddle, so basically sheepskin on sheepskin. I’ve also got a gel seat saver pad on the saddle and a sheepskin seat saver over that as well. Oh… and a sheepskin covered girth haha

    I'm learning a lot from your videos. I appreciate your doing them. I have 2 questions if you would please speak to.
    I live in Canada and I keep wondering how do you deal with the snakes and your horses? I'm concerned for your boys being bit. Secondly, in extreme cold, frost bite in a couple of minutes, would you consider blanketing your horse?
    Thank you for your time and have a great evening?

  • @slbj3940
    @slbj3940 13 років тому

    @horseawareness- you said you prefer wool girths to neoprene, do you feel the same about the pads with neoprene? My horse is rather round in the back and the pads sometimes slip back a bit. He is a little higher in the withers. I was thinking the neoprene may avoid this from happening. Any thoughts? Thanks for your help and all the info you put out there.

  • @ThinkLikeAHorse

    Thicker, last longer, more natural, breathes better, more padding. You get what you pay for, there is a reason real sheep skin cost more and the other stuff is cheaper.
    RE: 17horseylover17

    Never thought of that for mesh stuff, i used to have loads of the damned stuff!
    People in the horse world make me laugh though, at my old yard people would spend ridiculous amounts on things their horses didnt need or want (£80 every 6 weeks for a horses shoes... horse wasnt ridden for months and just stood in a field at one point, £200 on a rug that the horse would go out and trash within 10 minutes then they'd be crying that the horse trashed the expensive rug...) but won't put their hands in their pocket when it counts. Madness.

    • @mayac218
      @mayac218 6 років тому

      Elizabeth Stolbova it depends on what's available and how it fits horse and rider. A brand new expensive saddle may not fit the horse correctly while the second hand one fits really well. Just gotta keep your eye out and see if what you find has what you're looking for.

    Hi Rick, I been theorizing re: saddles for the horse I don't have yet. I don't think I like treeless saddles, as I don't believe they can distribute a rider's weight properly, but what do you think of flex tree saddles? I can't tell if they're based on REAL research, if the flex gives good weight distribution & helps the horse move more freely, or if it's all a very expensive, stupid fad. I'd wanna use what's better for the horse, whether new or old tech. Any advice? Thx!

    This is the saddle I am buying, I am not going to use the bridle and saddle pad, but my sister bought the brown one and highly suggested I get the black. She uses in the arena but I need it for steep trail rides. What do you think of it?
    I’ve been using my trainers by using a thick pad with a red saddle rug over it (its super wide so I need more padding since my horse is a lot less round and thick than her Thoroughbred cross)and Rip (my horse) rides fine with both. I need a cheaper one since we often ride in weather conditions that are not good for saddles so we try to avoid super expensive saddles.

    That Ain’t no shit❗️! Everybody around here’s answer is, “ just get a thicker blanket and it’ll fit just fine”. Never taking into account the angle of the tree on the back of the horse. Damn thing could be Setting on the bottom edge or - angled out so far that the bottom of the tree is not even on the back of the horse along the sides of the saddle . “ just as long as it fits your ass that’s what you’re looking for”. Un freaking real!!!
    They never check to see if the tree fits flat the entire length of the tree along the saddle edge.
    People should be made to wear👞 shoes that are three sizes too small!
    🤣Hey, long is your foot🦶🏼 fits in it it’ll be OK! ❗️Dumbasses!❗️
