Ikea Hack ( Platform bed with 12 DRAWERS)

  • Things you will need,
    3 nordli 4 drawers
    Screwdriver
    Optional
    Brad nailer
    Wood glue
I would recommend the brad nailer and glue, it feels a lot more sturdier and the joints on the whole build will last longer. Thanks or watching
If you don't have an Ikea near you amazon has them. More expensive but you don't have to worry about driving and getting them. It will go right to your door.

Would love to hear an update on this, how is it holding and what are the measurements of the frame in the middle thanks a bunch.
Plan on doing this very soon since we live in a apartment will save us so much space.

    • @iamuglypeople

To work out the measurements for the frame just look at the dimensions for the drawer units.
I’m just making these numbers up but let’s say the units are:
      1600mm wide, 600mm deep, 700mm high.
You’d have one unit running right along the end width of the bed so the total width of the bed would be 1600mm.
You’d have the length of a unit behind the end unit, so that would be the depth of the end unit plus the width of the side unit. That would be 600mm + 1600mm, so the total length of the bed would be 2200mm.
With that in mind you just need to work out the empty space between the 2 side units. The end unit is 1600mm wide, the 2 units behind that are 600mm deep so that’s a total of 1200mm. That tells us the width of the frame would have to be 400mm and the length would of course be 1600mm as it’s the same length as the 2 side units. The finished height of the frame would have to be 700mm as it would be the same height as the units.
The only thing you’d have to keep in mind would be the thickness of the timber you use for the slats. If the timber was 20mm thick then you’d build the main body of the frame at 680mm high, then with the slats on top that would bring it to 700mm and flush with the top of the drawer units. Keep in mind the measurements I used are not likely to be the same as the units he used here, but that’s how you could easily work out the side of the frame before buying the drawer units. Just check ikea for the dimensions.

Been reading comment many people asked how it goes after a longer period, saw the drawer incident, but not much about if it's making any noise when you move around?

It lasted us 4 years, and I ended up taking them apart because we finally got a house. So we repurposed the bed for drawers for clothes. Verdict on the bed, it was the best thing I ever did when sharing 1 bedroom with 4. No noises and after 4 years it was still rated for rated R action. All drawers lasted except 2. That’s becAuse I didn’t use all the hardware when building the drawers. Since the nordli dresser is still available, you can buy just replacement drawers. All in all it’s a great build.

In all honesty, it should be able to handle more weight than slated beds. Because each drawer dresser is built on its own and able to support a lot of weight. The nordli bed can withstand 550lb. That’s not the limit meaning it can with stand more. The one I build here is built a lot sturdier. I would assume 600lbs

Hilario Penaloza its still going strong, even with kids after 3 years it’s going well. It can withstand rated R activity! Only had to repair 1 drawer!

Tools&Tech Any plan to release dimensions/instructions for center piece? Lots of folks hoping for this. Even something minimal would be awesome. Thanks for the vid.

Do you bump into the corners much? I have corners like yours and its easy to bump into one going round the bed. It might depend on how much space you have at the bottom of the bed.

@@toolstech9630 That's a great idea and thanks such a quick reply! I don't have kids and never thought of something like that.

No worries. Our bed is still going strong after all this time. Almost 2 years. One drawer did break but that’s because it where our diapers, wipes, and all the essentials to changing a baby. My wife was always hulking open. Causing the rail to fail. But I just went to ikea and bought just the drawer. Already installed and good to go.
The package for the drawer is separate from all the other stuff. So you can actually buy extra drawers for future use.

it's much more expensive to make this than to just by an ikea platform storage bed.

I agree but I also disagree!
I thought about buying the platform bed. But non came with 12 dreamers like I wanted. So you get more space if you go my route. Plus I bought the nordli when they where on sale.

justpassingthroughthistime I am going to configure the kullen drawers and use 2 (6 drawers) and 3(3 drawers) and it’s about half the price just for the drawers and you get 9 more drawers, as they are over 200 for these ones. it’s just going to be a little higher than these drawers.

Victoria Kremer how did that end up working for you? I will be making a platform storage bed this month and like the idea of more drawers 😆

KathrynDeniceNov09 I haven’t gotten the dressers yet because of Christmas but it’s only 380 for the 5 dressers vs the almost 600 for the ones he uses because they aren’t on sale right now

There is no point in doing that, because IKEA has already a NORDLI bed with storage place and it comes cheaper than buying drawers and DIY. Probably 2 years ago there wasn't such a thing and IKEA must have gotten the idea from this video. If so , thumbs up for the maker of this video, otherwise think twice before doing that

Fotis K yes they do make a Nordli platform bed with I think 4-6 drawers? This mod gives you 12 large drawers, I actually drew my conclusion from the Nordli bed. It was already out when I went to buy the drawers. I thought to my self, buying the Nordli bed would be easier. But not enough storage. So in my configuration, fits me best. Also in the future this won’t be a bed, me and my wife will grow out of it and use the drawers for many different things. So multi purpose and future proof. Pros and cons but I understand where you come from. BTW the bed still going strong 💪
