Oh the woes of living in a small town...no IKEA! We wanted to build a DIY storage bed (also called a platform bed), but all we could find on the internet were videos of people using IKEA furniture to build beds. IKEA tried our lives when they said that shipping was gonna be $200+ so we got a lil' innovative and checked out Walmart.com! Walmart offers free 2 day shipping on large orders, so we were able to save lots of coins okay?!

One question, do you think this would be possible to do it with the shelf model that had 3 X 4 instead of the 2X4 you used? Like, even higher?

If you take out one shelf of the cube organizer, you could get underneath and hang fairylights or something, and maybe throw a couple pillows underneath and make a chill spot

Upon unboxing, I was immediately upset at how the rails were very noticeably bent. But I kept going, all tools needed to assemble were included ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxqtX4Dxs6aecAZEuz6GY5-d81YecKCshn and I had it set up in about 30 minutes. Honestly I love this thing, make sure to read the measurements and measure your space so you know if it'll work for you. I bought this to put inside my closet, underneath where I hang my clothes and it is absolutely perfect! It is VERY sturdy and all drawers glide easily and mine are stuffed, and they are still flush when closed.

It seems like there's wasted storage space underneath. I'd like to figure out a way to use 2 pcs of plywood with maybe a piano hinge so it can be lifted up (long term storage like xmas decorations, dead bodies lol). I like the concept.
Thank you! Yessssss I love the idea of the piano hinge to be able to lift up the bed to get to the middle! There is lots of wasted space on the other side sense our room isn't big enough for the bed to come off the far wall. Definitely wish we should have thought of that hinge though. Right now we just keep bulky things like blankets under there lol

I actually did this and I have to say I love it so much. I have an extremely small room and this bed is my only furniture in my room it takes up most of my room and I don’t have it against a wall so I can use all the cubes and that bed is like a dresser for me as well. Also the 4 cube one by my feet is not connected so I use the middle under part as storage space.

I really want to make this but I would replace the cubes at the foot of the bed with just a cupboard with no backing so I could use the storage space underneath
Otaku Taco that would make for super easy access! For now we only put blankets under there so we can pull and push them through the Cubes. Love your idea!
Gonna try this for my 5 year old ..minus the shelf at the foot of the bed so she’ll have a fort area to put her beanbag and reading light ..quiet relaxing place for her to chill.

The need for ventilation makes no sense. Why would they make vinyl zippered mattress covers if that were true?
My daughter and I who is 32 yrs old, who pays half of all bills, just moved into an old trailer built in 1976 and her room is so....small. She has a big old closet but no shelves, for organization, but this idea would be a start in organizing her room. The closet will need to wait for my next idea. Thanks for ur post it helped me out.
Yes! I think this is a great way to start. Plus, three things at once. New bed, saving space, and creating more space.
If you move the one 4 cube to the top of the bed and make a makeshift door out of some plywood or something - paint it white to match. Then you have under bed storage for shoes, and extra comforters & pillows. :)

hahaha, it was totally safe! We slept on it for a little over 2 years with no issues. We took it down and got a lower bed frame once we got tired of climbing, then we moved anyway.

Gurl the cheap target brand is not sturdy whatsoever I recommend just going the more quality route and getting the more expensive one
a cool idea if you are like me and want to build this bed is to add a cupboard instead of the 4 cube at the end and cut out the back for a secret room. Just an idea!

I think it's a cool Idea to repurpose some old bookshelves, if you already have them but it doesn't make sense to buy new ones just to waste all the storage space underneath & against the wall.

I think you could add slats to the back of the organizer so the inserts or cubes do not fall through.

Had this exact idea.. But instead of wasting money for the 2 along the wall, will mount a rail on the wall..and will also be able to use the space underneath for various activities!

Out of all the DIY platform beds videos that i watched, I really enjoyed your Ikea/Walmart hack. I'm leaning towards using yours, but using sheet of plywood as my support instead. Thanks again!
I like the idea. But unless you store things in the other 12 cubes that are against the wall, like things you know you aren’t using.. otherwise that’s a waste of 12 storage cubes! Or if you had the space to have the bed in the center of a wall instead of against it.
But personally, for ME that size storage cube is too high. I would probably use a 3 cube instead of a 4 & 6.
Other than that, I love the concept. 👍🏼 When I came across this video it gave me the idea to consider this for my daughters. Who i just converted them from a full size futon bunk bed to 2 twin beds. Currently they’re still sleeping on their mattress on the floor until I can find them beds! This idea would even work to corner their beds together!

Cool DIY if I were to do this, I would've had the other storage slots facing towards the wall instead of inward just in case I decided to change the position of the bed. And I would use a sheet of plywood. TFS!

Maybe if you had left the gap, and not filled it with that one 4 cube, you would be able to access all of those water cubby holes that are against the wall and have storage underneath. I love it though. Gonna do a twin for my Grandkids nursery.

Thank you! It's super sturdy! We also wrestle a lot lol and we haven't had any problems! Another commenter suggested we reinforce the middle with cross beams for support though , so that may be something to think about if you are going to try this!

Just a couple suggestions...a sheet of 3/4” plywood instead if 2x4 would be sturdy enough for a foundation. And they make flat metal strapping to connect the pieces that aren’t in the corners. You did a great job. And love that it didn’t have to be from ikea as many do not have one near them.

we did measure. we put the tape to get a FEEL for how the bed would fit in the room. I'm a visual person.
