- In the Bike Vault on the Dirt Shed Show, we normally rank your bike on a 'Nice' to a 'Super Nice' scale. But to make things more interesting we thought we'd switch it up by adding a few more ranks. Neil Donoghue and Blake Samson rank your mountain bikes from 'Super Nice' down to 'Super 💩'. It doesn't matter whether you have an expensive high-end MTB or a budget-friendly one no bike is safe.

I've got a NOS Saracen S-tour frame in the vault. They were made by a specialty builder in the Pacific NW USA- I forget the name though. One of the first monocoque frames, and a good one, built specifically for DS/4X back in the day...
That dirt jump at the end takes it for me. Really nice. Although the smoke Is hilarious 😂 a bit cringy but it's ok, you can tell that's a proud owner. Good video guys!

I ride manitou forks as well the only thing that I don't like is having to explain reversed arch technology to every one NO THE FORK IS NOT BACKWARDS😂

After 20 yrs not riding a mtb, and the last 3 years watching mtb videos on UA-cam, my father in law loaned me his old mtb he picked up in a thrift shop to see if I liked it.
A 2009 gr aggressor.
After a week on it I gave it him back after realising i loved it, got my own bike and away I went.

My first mountain bike was a Raleigh Mustang and I upgraded to a Maverick after that. How old am I 😂
My first MTB was a 2016 GT Avalanche Comp 27.5" hardtail and I replaced the front forks with a 110mm travel Rockshock. Took it everywhere, it's a workhorse. Now, I'm riding Giant Trance 3 full sus 150mm travel front and back and the GT has become my commuter. But loved the hardtail, lots of fun and thrills. I've fallen off on the GT more times than I can remember but it's dicey which makes it so much more fun.

What about my 2014 cannondale trail 4? Maybe a budget bike, but I love riding it, especially after swapping out the forks for a pair of fox float 32s. It’s done everything and survived, gotta love a hardtail…

I ran an older s works m2 powder coated silvervane w 100mm fox float bontrager racelite rims w bontrager stamped king hubs xtr v brake and xt crank and made ss specific w worn chain 32 17 gears and no slop. Ran it for at least 10k miles probably more never had to change it so it is possible. Oh yeah i ran it very aggressive up and downhill. Dont hate because no horizontal dropouts if you take the time you can do it right.

I'm told Headshok were intended for traction and not for jumping/drops. With 80mm max travel I will tend to agree.
Keeping your wheels on the ground is the primary focus of all suspension. The headshock on that Super-V is probably a 60mm model, which was in keeping with other standard forks of that era

I have a set of Mavic road rims with the ceramic coating My rims don't sound like a couple of randy seals. In the wet. It's usually me screaming as the bike make no attempt to slow down from 7 mph and m face is getting closer to the f**ing bus. I assume Martyn is going to run over Neil and Blake on his return. Just not sure if he'll be in his motor or hi wheelchair.

100% disagree on both the super nice bikes. They are both pavement princesses, and it don't matter if we're talking 4x4's or MTBs, pavement princesses are just sad. My 3 month old Fuel EX looks like I ran over it with a bulldozer, and every flaw was born out of a fantastic day on the mountain.

Canondale always made such a big deal about how superior their headshock was compared to everything...then none of their pros rode it
Lol yeah I remember that time when it was forcefully marketed as combining the stiff control of a rigid fork with the comfort of suspension. Sounds like it might have all been guff. I still like the look of those super Vs, and the similar Trek from that time, even though at a glance they look like a shit Y-frame horror-show from Argos!
To be fair, most of the early pro's would lock out, or dummy up their suspensions. The Headshock worked well for what it was; 50-80 mm of fairly soft suspension. Better than the Girvin 'flex-stem', and (arguably) not much different than the first Rockshox forks either.
I don't remember any of the Cannondale team not using headshocks?
Hans Rey did it all on a (mostly) regular bike...
He rode the Andes in the early 2000s on a rim brake hardtail, inferior to what some 16 yo boys ride today. A pro like him can do such stuff even on a simple bike

Suggestion: Don't include "stock" bikes. I think this should be only based on customized bikes.
I think maybe separate the types of bikes - ie dirt jumpers, enduro, trail, hardtail, ebike, tandem, etc etc.
They are all customised to at least some degree

Why are trials bikes lumped in with MTB? A gravel bike would be closure to trail, Enduro, DH and freeriding.
Honestly do people actually ride these super expensive bikes in the real world? Rode my modest hardtail today and after 2 hours it was covered in shit and grinding the gears and brakes. I'd have been crying of it had cost me £10k not £2k with parts that are relatively cheap to replace.
