I Got Scammed | RARE 300 Movie Pack PlayStation 3

  • This is a bit of a different video for me. I hope it's not too off from what viewers expect. Kinda just me relating my bad experience with an ebay purchase. An unboxing/lamenting video showing how it was a scam.
    While researching the CECHM03 model for another video I came across this 300 Movie Pack PlayStation 3 listing on eBay. It said it was an M03. I wanted to show the variant, but there was too little information about it online. Few pictures, none that show the top of the box where the model number is listed. This listing was the only place I could find that mentioned what model might be inside. So I bought it and got burned.
    After arriving I realized this movie pack was originally supposed to contain an L03 model, not an M03. The seller put an ordinary boxed 80GB M03 inside the slip of the 300 movie pack and avoided taking of pictures with the angles that would have given away the deception. Then sold it as "RARE" to get a better deal with the imposter.
    While the description was for an M03 console and that's what I got. It was not "Complete in original box" as described. For one, to be "complete" it would need all of the items listed in the contents on the box and it was missing several items. While you could see what was included in the pictures, so that could be considered my fault for not checking, it shouldn't be listed as Complete when it isn't.
    Second, there were no pictures of the M03's Box. All the angles show the 300 slip, which I think was meant to make the buyer think it was the box. The M03's box is inside that slip and there were no pictures of that. That's deceptive on it's own, but the M03's box also shows the serial number of the original console that was inside. And it doesn't match the SN on the console within. This critical angle was missing from the listing to prevent me from seeing they didn't match. That means it's neither complete or original. It's just a copy of 300 and a Boxed M03 slipped inside the movie pack's sleeve.
    In the end I did get my money back, so it turned out ok. But it was a gross feeling being taken advantage of like this. Scammers suck!

      @@ripfelix3020 It was 100% NOT your fault. That guy clearly went ahead and cobbled a "rare" package from what components they could find. If you advertise an authentic rare bundle/pack, goes without saying that you should advertise the actual components. Although... some people just don't understand the value of these and they think: I got a PS3 with the same parameters as on the box, I got the movie, I got a box, so what is wrong with that? So, they may think they are right in their own mind, but actually for a serious collector this looks like (and is) a scam. If this was the case, when you informed them, the right thing for them to do was to get the items back and sell them separately as they should have done.

    When you open a case with a seller eBay blocks the amount of money that you paid on the seller eBay account, if the case ends with a win by the seller eBay unlocks the money, if the buyer wins and eBay decides to fully refund the buyer, eBay takes the amount of blocked money from the seller bank account and transfers it to yours. The only one that is losing money here is the seller, and now that eBay gave you a full refund you don't actually need to return the item.
    Sorry for my bad English, hope this helps understand how eBay returns work from the point of view of the seller.

    I remember thinking I pulled one over on Best Buy when I held them to their advertisement and got a retail “Unrated” copy of Talladega Nights with my 60GB model in December 2006 because they kept advertising it even when the promo version (theatrical cut) was no longer included… not that either are “rare” and the movie was a turd. I recall being unable to navigate the BD menus due to overscan on my Sony KV-30XBR910 CRT HDTV… so they were already designing HD menus like CRT overscan wasn’t a thing. I ended up getting a KDL-52XBR2 LCD HDTV for 5k (more than 2x the XBR910 since large LCDs were crazy back then) and it was one of the worst purchases I ever made. Meanwhile, my XBR910 still gets compliments to this day.

    13:24 If this all happened within a month or less the seller probably never got his money.
    Ebay shows the money in the seller's account as soon as the transaction is complete, but doesn't clear it for a while. If there's a problem with the order the buyer gets charged back before being able to withdraw the money.
    That's why you should always pay using ebay and avoid sellers who ask for bank transfers, paypal, etc. (usually in exchange for a discount). If your transaction is processed by ebay you're usually covered.

      I'm confused. The few times I've sold an item (usually a pricey video game title) in the past couple years I've been allowed to transfer my funds to my bank basically immediately after the shipping/tracking has updated to being scanned by the post office. Then it takes a day or so for the funds to reach my account. Like right now, I sold a game that shipped to a forwarding service and is now en route to Brazil. I had my money in my bank account before it even reached the forwarding service office in New Jersey or wherever that was. Shipped Priority Mail.

      I live in the EU (Italy) and whenever I sell something I get my money (minus ebay's cut) only the following month.
      The first work day of the following month to be precise, ebay sends me a notification with the balance for the month (though I very rarely sell more than one thing, usually used tech parts I upgraded or stuff I fix as a hobby) and a bank transfer.
      IIRC they changed the system a few years back, like 2020 or 2021. Before this change it used to work like you said.

      This is why I ignored him after he asked for bank details. If there was a transaction outside ebay, then ebay cant do anything about it and I'd have to deal with the police. So that's the point I called CS and asked for advice. If any part of that were legit, CS could have explained it. But instead they refunded me and told me to report the seller for violating ebay policy asking for that info.
      What get's me is another commenter said that sellers can't buy an international label and ebay doesnt give them a way to buy one. So he needed to ask me to buy one and then give them info to reimburse me. But if that were true, shouldn't ebay CS have explain that to me and then advised me on safe ways to do so? Like paypal or something? See IDK, never dealt with this situation before.

      @@ripfelix3020 there's definitely an option to buy a return label regardless, he could have even sent you a prepaid label outside of ebay rather than ask for your bank details or even reimburse you through paypal. was most likely trying to delay the whole process so you would either not return or he would be able to close the return in his favour (maybe due to late return or something). ebay/paypal usually sides with the buyer anyway for future ref (assuming you have a legitimate reason for return i.e discrepancies between listing/actual item)

Fortunately buying things off eBay is far less risky if things are clearly not as described and you have enough common sense to not go "off the record" with anything. I'm more anxious when selling stuff since even false claims by buyers are generally biased against the seller. Like my PayPal was shutdown for a week because someone opened a case for not receiving an item that was local pick up only and PayPal kept asking for tracking number.. 🙃

    Absolutely abhorrent behavior! Similar happened to me just last month. Had to pick out a replacement PSU for my E01 after it had failed. First one I got didn't provide enough pictures, and apparently came from a water damaged unit. Was even a different model of power supply than the one listed. (I ordered APS-226, but they sent me ZSSR539IA.) Fortunately, the seller had a modicum of decency left, and issued me a refund without too much friction, though he did drag his feet a bit, waited until I reminded him, and I ended up sourcing a new PSU from elsewhere.

    i’ve had this happen many times with shady sellers, once ebay issues you a refund it’s yours, you don’t need return it, as a seller on ebay as well if a seller doesn’t initiate the return themselves by going through ebay’s process and either make the buyer pay for shipping or sending a label themselves and outright refuses or try’s some even more shady tactics like this one did ebay will simply chargeback the sellers paypal account and you’ll get a refund, most likely since they also violated ebay’s terms they’ll be removed completely from the platform,
    good score, don’t feel bad for this dink of a seller, i’ve seen so many others try to pull this same scam tactic of blaming the buyer for everything and it never works in their favour

    • @trevor245

      You are wrong about the return process. If an item is not as described and the buyer opens a return (the seller can never start a return for obvious reasons). The seller is responsible for return shipping. However if the item was sold internationally they obviously are unable to buy a return shipping label. Therefore what ebay tells the seller to do is to provide the buyer with the funds for return shipping instead. So either via PayPal, bank transfer or other means. This is perfectly normal and part of the return process. It's not a scam attempt...

    It's possible that the M version was legitimately in the the L sleeved box as the M was a UK only SKU released on the same date as the L. Both were released in the UK market.
    I have seen this mismatch happen before on sleeved "special editions", errors like this aren't unknown.
    With these sleeved versions, the sleeves are normally added in the country of sale on whatever machines are available at the time. Not at the production factory.
    Probably at the time of printing the L version was expected, but then the UK got it's exclusive M version.
    But saying that, the serial number on the console would match the main box, so that certainly wasn't the original console for that box even if the outer sleeve and box were originally sold together.

    The beautiful thing about this is the eBay seller would have been charged back immediately. If they didn't have the funds available to cover it then eBay will lock their account and sell the debt to a collections agency. I've actually been scammed as a seller via abuse from this system funnily enough. It was for a small amount at least so I just let it go - cost of doing business so to speak. Anyways, now you just need to find an L model to complete the package, hah.

      I think he thought he had crafted a listing that would make it my fault. His response to my 1st message felt like he was ready for it. Blamed me and he took it immediately to ebay CS as if getting out in front of it would cause me to immediatly lose the case when I opened it. Was kinda overreactionary TBH. That sort of behavior signaled to me that they knew what they were doing from the start. It wasnt a simple mistake in listing. I was expecting a reasonable response with some kind of explanation that made sense. Like, "I'm not very familiar with these consoles and made a mistake in the listing description." If he'd just said that there'd be no problem. I'd have probably paid to send it back. But that's not how it went down.
      And that's why I think it was actually a scam and not just a mistake. The wording and missing picture angles, behavior...etc. It all takes it beyond a mistake IMO.

  • @trevor245
    @trevor245 8 місяців тому +1

    Isn't it possible that this is how they sold these bundles when they had stock of the sleeve left over? Sure the serial of the console doesn't match but for all we know the box is actually original to the sleeve. Honestly I am on the seller's side here. It's listed as the correct model and you got what was pictured. I understand potential irritation that it isn't matching but it's not like you couldn't just sell the model you got and look for the correct one to put the sleeve around. I do find some issue with the response of the seller but you cannot expect sellers to know about all these details of console collecting IMO. They probably looked at the console to test it. Scanned the barcode to list it and just copied the model from the closest similar listing. If it was listed as being the model linked to that bundle I would agree with being agree but it's legitimately listed as being that model. Even than you can return the item but instead you just didn't.
    Also returns being accepted doesn't mean the seller pays for return shipping. If you accept returns on ebay what you are accepting is buyer's remorse returns for which the seller can specify whether the buyer or they themselves pay for return shipping. If an item isn't as described the seller always has to accept and pay for a return. Regardless of if they do not accepte returns on the listing.
    The seller is also correct in asking for payment information. You need to ask for payment information in order to provide funds return shipping. Ebay does not provide facilities to do this in a different method. They could have done it via paypal but if it's done via bank account you need all the information. The seller didn't want to doxx you and they already had your address to ship the item to you, if the shipping was international they especially cannot do anything considering that as a seller you can't exactly buy a shipping label from a different country......
    IMO you essentially scammed the seller out of the console via use of eBay's rather biased buyer protection service but that's just my opinion. Of course the seller didn't help with the way the responded but that doesn't really change the situation past the request for payment information to issue a return shipping label. Kind of ridiculous to have this happen and to than proceed to make a video on the seller calling them a scammer for what is essentially a bit of a sloppy listing, semantics and a not so proper response.

    • @ripfelix3020
      @ripfelix3020  8 місяців тому +1

      If that's the case then why didnt ebay CS explain that to me, reassure me that the seller needs me to provide them with payment info? It just felt wrong all the way around. Basically from my perspective it looks like a scam and neither ebay or seller did anything to reassure me that it wasnt and this is the process. They could have diffused the situation and been professional. Or said if you dont feel comfortable providing bank account details (I dont!) then we can issue you funds via paypal (which I'd feel safer doing. Tho I'd have still asked ebay if this was legit the way it works). Then the hair on the back of my neck wouldnt be standing on end.
      The last straw was asking for personal information. Every time you start a conversation with a seller ebay warns you not to exchange that info. I think the better question is, How would I know this wasnt a scam?
      Seller and ebay need to be better about communication to avoid scaring buyers into opening a case. TBH that what the sellers defensive comments felt like he was trying to do. I did what I thought the responsable thing to do was, call ebay CS and ask them what to do. And despite what you've said, they refunded me and told me to report the seller. I also haven't heard from the seller or ebay again.
      So IDK. I totally get seller frustrstions with ebay taking the side of customers and have heard horror stories, which is why I'm aprehensive about selling consoles on ebay. But sellers need to bend over backwards to reassure customers and have a better demeanor than this guy. I do not expect sellers to be experts about what they sell. But if you're selling a collectors item it is their responsability to list it correctly. And if the buyer is unhappy with the purchase because it wasnt (this wasnt original or complete as described. It was just a boxed console with a movie inside) then accept the return and adjust the listing to be correct on the next attempt.

    • @trevor245
      @trevor245 8 місяців тому

      @@ripfelix3020 but that's the thing. It wasn't just a console with a movie inside. It was exactly as listed. The model was correct to the listing, the sleeve and box are original and so are all the inserts. It's all original just potentially not the original pairing. That's why I said it's semantics. Kinda like how if you have a sealed game that's damaged it's not technically in new condition, but it's still sealed so it would be listed as brand new. Depending on the buyer this can be an issue. Opening a return case isn't the issue, the issue is this exact situation.
      You say you have heard horror stories and for the seller this qualifies as one, following procedures, a case being closed in their favor, only to be reopened and closed in favor of the buyer within a day of the return being reopened without being able to influence much of anything. I am not saying the seller is respectable considering the way they replied to you but labeling them as a scammer for this seems crazy to me. The TOS should indeed be better communicated. Issue is is that this TOS isn't strictly upheld in cases like this and it's handled on a case by case basis. Plus most ebay employees you talk to also do not know what the exact regulations are, case and point; the person who closed the return in favour of you. Technically that's fully outside of the tos since the seller has an allotted time to get a return shipping label and even after that time they are supposed to get 2 more weeks to respond. This stuff becomes quite muddy when you are communicating via two different ebay sites (for example ebay co uk and ebay com). It's just a system that heavily favours the buyer. Every buyer is different and it's unreasonable to expect sellers to be as knowledgeable on a specific part of collecting as you are in most cases. The easiest way to resolve is is just asking for more pictures.

    • @ripfelix3020
      @ripfelix3020  8 місяців тому

      I can see your side here, but there's a difference between semantics and sophistry. Using intentionally misleading, but technically true language, if you define "original" to mean "doesn't contain a fake/ aftermarket product" and "complete" to mean "everything pictured," is the difference. One is a misunderstanding the other is deception. But to the average reasonable person this was neither complete or original. For it to be complete it should have everythin listed in the contesnts on the box And for it to be original serial numbers need to match.
      An accurate description is Boxed M03. Why not just say that? Perhaps becuse Complete in original box, wrapped in a sleeve from an uncommon bundle would yield a higher price? I think the missing picture angles signal, if not proove that intent.
      I dont think this is a simple misunderstanding in terms. I think it was crafted for deception.

    • @trevor245
      @trevor245 8 місяців тому +1

      @@ripfelix3020 I don't know how familiar you are with buying stuff like this online. I am very familiar with it and I sell on ebay as well, which I assume was evident from my previous comments. I 100% disagree with the statement that the listing shows an intent to deceive. Not only is it clearly stated that this is indeed the model you received, it is also very VERY likely that they didn't even know the sleeve didn't match the console. Most collector's don't even know about model differences besides the gb versions.
      As for the completeness, that is something which I also find somewhat unreasonable. A game that has the box, manual and cartridge/disc is considered and usually sold as being complete even if it is missing an insert for example. This is why I call upon familiarity with this type of thing because none of this is written down. You can argue any wording or pictures to fit your narrative if need be, but being familiar with this helps with having expectations which are reasonable.
      The fact that the model was even listed is what's surprising in the first place. But as I said, what likely happened is that they got the console, scanned the barcode and got that model which they used in the title.
      Also there is a general misconception here which is that the bundle is worth money in the first place. It is not. I collect console variants and box variants and I know the general market for stuff like this. I do not know this exact bundle but usually with sleeve variants like this they tend to be very rare but not at all desirable. Similar to many of the movie bundles for psp for example (the geisha psp bundle being a prime example of one that's super rare but doesn't really sell for much more than a normal psp). This bundle would most likely not sell for much more than a normal boxed PS3 of the same model as there is simply nearly 0 demand for the sleeve variant. I do not know whether there is a difference between the console that sold and the console that it's supposed to come with in terms of desirability, but that doesn't matter because what was advertised is what you received.
      So with that I would argue that it's simply just a combination of a seller that handles a lot of inventory not carefully listing the item, combined with your IMO somewhat unrealistic expectations. Seeing the listing the seller was honest about the console it came with and what was included, and there was no real incentive to lie about the console matching the sleeve in terms of malicious intentions because there is hardly anything to be gained. Solution? Ask for more pictures next time. Problem solved lol.
      I do want to reiterate that the seller's response was less than favorable. I do not think this deserves them losing the console and the money, but they could have handled it better for sure.

    • @Sasahara-Lafiel
      @Sasahara-Lafiel 8 місяців тому

      @@trevor245 There also no way to know when the console was combined, but looks likely that the seller didn't notice the L and M discrepancy. You can pick up boxed Ls for £30-£50 at boot fairs ect. What hurt the seller was their bad response. But this is why I wouldn't sell this sort of device outside of the UK because of the costly returns process if they buyer has a problem, whoever's fault it is.
