- Here is how I use multiple compressors when mixing vocals. Here I use the CLA-76 and the CLA-2A by Waves Audio.

I’ve been using compressors for years and this is the first time it’s been explained in such a clear way. Thanks man
the way you wrapped the video making the point about total gr shared between the 2 compressors finally made it click for me! thanks!
The most illuminating explanation about serial compression on the internet. Bravo 🎊
Great explanation! 🙏🏽 I had them in the wrong order and now I understand what I was doing wrong and also WHY it needs to go the other way. very helpful and I feel like I understand the purpose and funcitionality of each and how to use them. much appreciated.
Its been done this way for decades
Thank you for putting this in terms I can understand. I have these two exact compressors and really look forward to tackling this.
Yo this was a fantastic thorough explanation man which made it that much more clear. Thank you.
Great tutorial….jerry, kindly make a video on how to achieve a clean recording in fl studio 🙏🙏🙏
That doesn't need a video. 1. Good equipment. 2. Good acoustic recording environment 3. Proper input gain.
Clear and to the point, thanks!
This is great!
This is great!
ohhh yeaaa great vid!
Great video tutorial keep up the good work
I have always used these two compressors on vocals. Sometimes I swap out the LA2A for a Fairchild. I think this is pretty common in a vocal chain.
Great video
Thank you, I will be experimenting and adding this to my mixes!!
Great overall explanation. I appreciate this video. Are there times you would recommend a vocal rider instead of the 1176?
Great video 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾❤️
Great tips thanks !!
why not gain stage first instead of two compressors? Thanks for the video
Hi, hello
Please can you make a tutorial, how to record and mix a podcast or a voiceover, which plugin to use...?
I am your fan all the way from East Africa, Tanzania.
Yes I will definitely do one.
Yess, you represent me @ManMediaTZ Thanks
Great one
Bravo!
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Why not limiter for peak compression? And later la2a. Limiter is for that propose and I think that work better than cla76. What is the difference on your think?
You could definitely use a limiter to handle peaks. The 1176 is essentially acting as a limiter though in some fashion by using a higher ratio. You also get some of the flavor and characteristics from a compressor if you use it instead of a limiter.
You could use a clipper, limiter, or compressor and achieve the same result. Limiters tend to be more transparent than most compressors. Clippers are super aggressive limiters that intentionally add distortion, for character. Compressors can have as little or as much character as you like, and can be run aggressive or gentle, making them the most versatile and creative option for most engineers. It just depends on what you like, what you think sounds good.
I have compression question in the same vein as this. How would a vocal rider fit along side using fast compression or limiting to smooth out a dynamic track?
great viddd
Is analog obsession fet compressor good? It's 1176 emulation
Use anything you have access to.
@@JesusFromTheHood for real man. They are amazing
@@mixwithjerry okay man sure. Thanks for the video
Yes, its really good👍🏼
thank u sir
Unpopular opinion the wave version of those to me sound better then uad I tend to use the Neold, uad, and wave all depending on the song
You the best
Thanks for the feedback!!
I came here to see people's ways of using this famous combo in vocal treatments, but couldn't help noticing that you're hot 🤘you're the second hottest producer after myself
I am a super noob at this, so here’s a super noob question. If I decide to go this route with double compression then does that eliminate the need to d ess words and manually correct the dynamics of the vocal takes?
No you will definitely need to de-ess. Always try to set the level of the vocal takes correctly where you want them before adding compression.
mad hair!
do i need this if i have the pro-c2 by fabfilter
All these compressor vids use the same soft vocals which makes it difficult to really hear how they would work with a rock style vocalist , not to mention how they apply to the mastering process or even what type of mics are being used . It’s almost futile really .
how come my volume doubles when i put these compressors on yours didnt do that at stock settings
I struggled with that too when I 1st tried these plugins. Try level matching the input and and the volume it's playing back in. Then compress and level match again.
Hey Bro! Great work! UAD have a black friday deal on at the moment selling a producer bundle for 299$ which includes (LA-2A bundle 3in1) and (1176 bundle 3in1) and a bunch of other plugins. Is it a good purchase it seems like a saving but i'm reading people are getting the LA-2A for free. 😅 thanks bro
You are lying.
@@HarvinderSingh-yy8th I got the bundle for around 60 dollars in the end.
@@HarvinderSingh-yy8th😂
It not a bad idea to insert two 1176 compressor's on your hair cut and push
all the ratio buttons in as well at the same time and squash the living shit out
of it...
No need to hate on the mullet.
@@mixwithjerry I'm not, I was suggesting an idea to re-shape it.
What’s the difference with a 12:1 to ratio
Different knee, compresses later and harder, which is best suited for catching peaks if that's the goal.

What do you mean?
What computer and cpu you use?
I built my own using the Ryzen 2700 chip.

@@oompapompaa6543 Ryzen 2700
Hi, I just had a few questions. What situations would a ration of 12:1 be used on the 1176? And do people go even higher than that? Also, i’ve seen methods where the 1176 has a 4:1 ratio and only does 1 to 2 db of gain reduction, while the LA2A does about 3 to 7 db. When would this method be used. I have pretty dynamic, and sometimes harsh, rock type vocals, and i’m looking for a method that suits me best. I’m pretty new to making music, and I’m just trying to gain as much information as possible. Thanks for the video.
There's no list of specific scenarios. There's just math and how it sounds to your ears. A 12:1 ratio is appropriate in any situation where you need 12db of gain reduction for every 1db of input gain that exceeds your set threshold. That's really the only objective truth that could be said about your question (anything else that can be said is subjective). What effect this has varies wildly depending on the source material and where you've set your threshold, attack, and release. Got a really peaky bass guitar that gets lost in the mix when you'd rather have something more consistent sounding, sure, go with a high ratio. But in that scenario, setting a threshold too low might squash the signal too much or setting it too high might not affect the signal as much as you would like. But you might also get to your objective better with a lower ratio and a lower threshold. It all depends on what sound you want. Compression is tough to figure out at first, and sometimes it can take years to hear it. I'm not trying to sound snooty about this. It's just that I've been there and I've learned from my experience that you have to understand the math first to know logically how the settings affect the signal and with enough time, you'll just hear what you need to without thinking about it.
If can only buy one..better none:?
G
I can hear the aggressive, upfront compression on your voice over and it’s exhausting my ears.
It’s tough to please everyone. I always have comments on my channel saying it sounds clean and asking for the voiceover chain. All I can do is make my videos how I like them.
It doesn't sound bad, your chain is certainly good. My ear is just sensitive to compression and sustained loudness. It may not be affecting everyone, so I'm not saying you need to change your process -- just that it could be very obvious to some people. @@mixwithjerry
Yeah I feel you. Ain't no worries. Thank you for the feedback!@@Itsallawesome

why u picked the MONO version of the plugins and not the stereo?
Vocal recording is a mono sound source. Only used one microphone, not two, to record the vocal. Same signal comes out of the left and right speaker.
The 1176 is too agressive in this example
In another video you make fun of my singing when I’m just trying to help people with mixing. To me, it seems that you’re just being overly negative in the comments to stroke your own ego.
I am not a fan of the la2a... It adds this horrible buzzing sound to your vocals.... Sounds like they added some type of saturation to it which sounds horrible. Its better to do something like an r compressor on the warm setting and then add saturation with Decapitator..
Turn the analog feature off at the bottom.
@@mixwithjerry always have it off maybe its my harsh cheap ass at2020 mic...
@@RobRuffMusic Never had a problem using the UAD one.. maybe its static being pushed from the mic or the circuitry or room like you suggested?

Stipulate plug-in if a plugin is the basis of your UA-cam video.
Analog baby, you won’t get that with a plug-in. Disgusting.
You can use any compressors that you’d like, plugin or hardware. I’m just teaching serial compression. Not sure how that is disgusting. Your comment is a pretty rough look on your end.
