    Just a gentle reminder for anyone struggling with this, like I did: presets and profiles are not the same thing. They're two separate entities, so it's important to recognize the difference between them.

    I have troubles to import profiles on lightroom ipad (there is no import profile option). One way is to use lightroom CC desktop, create a preset with the profile and then sync it. But this has an issue and can't sync the color swap from the profile (but the -100 temperature is synced). Current work arround I found was to first set the profile on each IR images on my desktop. Then export those images into a .dng file. Then re import those images. Once they are sync with the cloud you will see those images with the correct profile on the ipad. But sadly the profile only exist on the images and can't be reused on another image imported from the ipad. I hope it helps someone.

    Hi Rob Shea, Thanks for your video about creating a color profile for infrared images! I managed to do everything you explained. But I didn't succeed in embedding my profile in Lightroom. Three questions: 1) where do you save this custom made profiles on a Mac (I work with a Mac mini)? 2) how do you embed a dcp profile in Lightroom? 3) what is the difference between a dcp file and a dcpr file? I hope you can give me some answers! Ariane James

    • @robshea
      @robshea  Рік тому

      1) On the mac, dcp files are placed in this folder: ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/CameraRaw/CameraProfiles/
      2) Once the files are in that folder, restart LR, and you are all set.
      3) Don't worry about dcpr files, you just need dcp files.

    Rob, as you may have noticed already Lightroom 9.3, released today, gives us the ability to do a 'local' hue shift of up to 180 degrees.
    So after a custom camera profile that allows us to set a proper white balance, we can then do a 180 degree hue shift on the whole image, e.g. by drawing a short gradient, including the whole image at 100% slightly outside the image, and then we have something rather similar to a channel swap in appearance :-)

    • @robshea
      @robshea  4 роки тому

      Yes, I'm super excited about this new feature. I also think that it will be great for adding more color variety to images, potentially replacing what I've done in the past in Photoshop with H/S adjustment layers and masks.

      @robshea  4 роки тому

      Interestingly, I've spent the last few days perfecting and testing the profile/LUT/profile method. This hue adjustment update drops and probably negates that need for all of that. I'm both happy and frustrated. 😜

    Hi Rob, great video. I've had a great deal of hassle with lightroom/photoshop curtailing the names of files for *.dcp profiles. I have two IR cameras one EM10 Mark II 560nm and one EM10 Mark III 720nm so I want that indication in the filename. I thought that would be easy but I did not find it easy. It randomly seemed to decide itself what digits woudl be used in the file name- sometimes 15 characters long and sometimes 6. Resolution was to rename the files outside of camera raw folder, delete the previosuly imported files and then paste back in. Anyone had similar problems. MAyve it was just me. Anyway I have learned a great deal.

    I seem to be having the same problems as Charlie below (above). I can't seem to get blue skies separated from colour foliage. I click on the white balance and it is like I hear crickets. I am using a canon 6d mrk ii with a 720 hoya filter. My exposures are not that long varying from 1 to 5 seconds and I get fantastic black and white. I can change the colour but like I said, it all changes. Seems there is only yellow or only cyan or only reds, etc.... My sky changes right along with the foliage. I've done the DNG profile and using camera raw, they show up just fine. I don't have lightroom but there doesn't seem to be a different when it comes to IR. I've done the invert method, colour swapping, levels swapping, etc. Now, I've tried using Luminar 4 pro features and I get some colour difference but nothing like the blue skies and pink (or orange) foliage. I've watched your other video mentioned here and I've done the custom white balance in camera. I've not yet, however, taken a picture using my IR and not used a custom white balance (in camera) in order to start playing entirely in PS (6). You mention that it doesn't matter if I use a custom white balance in camera. I swear I am going in circles.

    • @robshea
      @robshea  4 роки тому +1

      Patricia, here are a couple things to keep in mind. It sounds like you are using an unconverted camera. It will be more challenging to get good colors in IR with an unconverted camera. I've tested the same scene with the same filters on both converted and unconverted cameras and there is a big difference in the colors. The colors on the unconverted camera are muddier and harder to white balance. You can see examples of this in the Neewer filter review video. ua-cam.com/video/shw2rdEkGMY/v-deo.html Also, be aware that a 720nm/R72 filter will only capture a small slice of red, plus near-infrared, resulting in limited colors. The traditional look for 720nm is the blue sky (red light swapped to blue) and white foliage (near-infrared light). In order to get bright oranges or yellows along with the blue, you would need to use a lower-numbered filter, such as a 590nm, which would capture oranges, reds, and near-infrared, on a converted camera. A converted camera with a 720nm filter can get a slight bit of color, but not as much as a lower-numbered filter. If you would like to stick with an unconverted camera, then B&W will produce the best results. If you desire the more colorful look, then a conversion is the way to go.

  • @CharlieGroh
    @CharlieGroh 4 роки тому +2

    Thanks for your attention to detail, Rob! I've been hacking away at IR for 11 years, have three dedicated bodies, the most recent being a Sony A7 I had done in 590nm. While I can generate nice images, alot of the time I'm in PS humping the color thing using Hue/Saturation and layer masks...but my *starting point* seems to be faulty. Can't seem to generate that nice blue sky and have to create it. Done all the channel swapping, your layer invert technique (cool there!) created different profiles...etc etc. I use a starting point in-camera of 2700K...could this be my problem. Is there an in-camera setting that may be fouling the nest, so to speak? Or, as I've heard many times; it doesn't matter if you shoot RAW?!

    • @robshea
      @robshea  4 роки тому +1

      Charlie, I would recommend setting a different white balance before you do a channel swap or invert. 2700k may work at times, but I typically need to custom white balance every image. Check out this video for some examples: ua-cam.com/video/QUFitdP7uoc/v-deo.html

    I created IR profiles for my Canon PowerShots S100 and G16. I then put them with their respective camera groups in Photoshot Elements 19. I used both locations mentioned in the "Where are my profiles blog article. Or...at least, I thought so. But, when I load a RAW file from either camera into PSE and use the dropdown to select the profile, the only profile camera raw lists for me is "Infrared Temp -100." No matter what I do, the camera specific profile isn't made available to me. Any thoughts on what I'm likely doing wrong?

    • @robshea
      @robshea  Місяць тому

      I have less experience with PSE, but here are the issues that you need to validate in order to see a profile in Adobe products.
      - When creating a custom DCP profile in the DNG Profile Editor, ensure that you have selected a base profile from the correct camera model. If you load multiple images in the program from different cameras, then the base profiles from different cameras will be listed.
      - You must be viewing a raw file or DNG file created from the raw. JPG, TIFF, PSD, or DNG files created from these do not support DCP profiles.
      - The camera model of the image being viewed must match the camera model of the profile.
      - The DCP profile needs to be installed in the correct location, as you reference in 590.red/where-profiles
      - The profile will appear in the Profile Browser. It will not appear under Presets. (Probably not your issue here, but included for completeness.)
      - The LR/PS program must be restarted. Newly added profiles are only loaded on program start.

    • @robshea

      Two profiles, with a temperature adjustments of -50 and -100, are all you need for all high-pass filters. This is why the Infrared Profile Pack contains these two profiles for each camera; see the link in the description. The only other filter I used that could benefit from it's own profile is the IR Chrome, which can be perfectly white balanced with a +25 temperature filter.

      You don't need a profile for every filter. In all of the cases I've seen, one or two profiles offer enough variation to cover all filters. One set to a temperature of -100 and one set to -50.

      I have developed a way to swap colors in Lightroom only. You can build your own here: 590.red/xmp

      However, you will need LRC 7.3.

      I've been looking for ways to get a better real-time preview of the effect of profiles, white balance, and color swap on an image in Lightroom. I'm exploring creating a plug-in that would allow for channel swapping right in LR. However, right now it still requires a round trip from Photoshop. @@robshea, Thanks Rob. As you are probably aware, on can, in PS, wrap a channel swap into at LUT, which can then be converted to a LR profile. This allows one to do the swap in LR, still leaves us with the WB problem, as we can only assign one profile to an image..
      Inspired by one of your videos, I tried RawTeraphy today, and that works very well as far as WB and global color adjustments, as you say.

      @@kbqvist I was playing around with the LUT method and noticed that if you create the profile in ACR from a previously demosaiced image (converted from RAW, then converted to Smart Object), then the WB is bad. However, if you make the profile with ACR while open with a RAW image, you can select the custom profile, leave the WB as shot and then create the LUT-based profile. This does work in LR and gives you good WB control in LR. The colors are swapped in the HSL panel, but that's a small price to pay for avoiding a roundtrip to PS. A few more questions I like the IR around 500 to 700 range You said that on a non-converted camera it is not good below 720nm. Second is the make of IR filter as important as other filters like ND As at this stage just trying to see if I can get anything like the shots I have seen so far not much luck Plus I like in the UK and we only get 2 to 3 days of sunshine a year. I am looking at getting the Hoya 720nm

    • @robshea
      @robshea  3 роки тому +1

      Correct, you should not use a filter with a cut-off lower than 720nm on an unconverted camera. When you do so, most of the exposure is visible light and you don't get enough infrared light.
      The specific make of the filter IS important. When shooting with an unconverted camera, it's important to use a high-quality filter, such as Hoya, B+W, Tiffen, LifePixel, Kolari Vision, etc. The Hoya filters are great and I highly recommend the R72. There are many low-cost infrared filters now available on Amazon and eBay. While low-quality filters can work well with a converted camera, low-quality filters will not work well with an unconverted camera.
      Hah, when I first start shooting infrared, it felt like the summer that was eternally overcast, maybe not quite UK overcast, but I can relate. 😄

      No, a JPG converted to DNG will not work.
      Raw files from most cameras contain what are called "dual-illuminant" profiles. These two profiles within the raw, one for tungsten and one for daylight, allow Adobe products to calculate a range of color temperatures. This is why you need a DNG file which is converted directly from a dual-illuminant raw file. A JPG file (or a single-illuminant raw file) doesn't have enough information to generate new profiles, even after being converted to a DNG.

    • @robshea
      @robshea  2 роки тому +1

      Unfortunately, DNG files created from Canon ELPH 180 images are not supported by the Adobe DNG Profile Editor. Most raw files are dual illuminant, meaning they have two internal color profiles which allow editors to calculate a color temperature between them. The DNG files from CHDK (or DNG files created from JPEG files in LR) are single illuminant, which is why they don’t work in the DNG Profile Editor. This prevents us from creating custom DNG Camera Profiles (DCP) to better support the wide range of color temperature required for IR. I’ll done quite a bit of research looking for a solution, but no success.
      For the ELPH 180, I recommend setting a custom white balance in-camera before shooting, to get the WB as close as possible in the JPEG. Then you can tweak further in LR.

      In the Adobe Profile Editor, the default Base Profile displayed for some images is the Embedded profile. You cannot create a new profile with a temperature shift based on the Embedded profile. Switching to the Standard base profile does allow you to make this change.

      @@robshea Thank you for adding the iPhone 13 Pro Max wide camera to the Infrared Profile Pack. I got it to work with my old Adobe Camera Raw 9.1 (CS6) on my desktop.
      Is there any way of importing it to my iPhone without an Adobe Cloud/Adobe Lightroom subscription (i.e. I have only Lightroom Mobile)? I have tried to Air Drop the two profiles to my iPhone (My Files) but I could not get LR Mobile to open/recognise them (the profiles are greyed out).
      Otherwise, I guess I would have to purchase a one month Adobe Lightroom Plan (or the free trial) to do the syncing of the profiles.
      I have just uploaded the iPhone 13 Pro Max telephoto lens.
      Many thanks, Rob.

      @@eddiecyy I've searched for ways to import profiles directly into Lightroom mobile, but haven't found any. It appears that they can only be imported from the desktop version.
      The file you uploaded it a JPG. Can you upload a DNG? Thanks!

      Hi Rob,
      I don’t know why for for some reasons, the raw file (telephoto 77mm) I uploaded to your Dropbox showed as jpg instead. Do you have an email whereby I could send you (you could reply through my email if you don’t want it here).

      Hello, I have sent you an image to be able to create the profile because it was impossible for me to create it myself (the Adobe link does not work).
      Thank you very much and greetings.

      Strangely I was able to create a profile for my Nikon D40 (modified for 470nm Hyper Color, image shot using a 590nm screw on filter) and was able to use it in Lightroom. I don’t know if this is because I’m using an old version of Lightroom (CC 7.0 2017). The profile pop-up is in a different area, in the Camera Calibration module all the way at the bottom. Also I was able to download Adobe DNG Editor using a ftp client, because yes, you can’t download it via their webpage. So it is still available, you just have to go through the back door to get it.

    Hello Rob, thanks for all the information. Please advise here. I tried creating the Profile as well as used the one from your profile pack (Nikon Z 8 Infrared Temp -100.dcp). But unfortunately, anytime I am choosing a neutral color to set the WB, I am always getting 2000 as the lower value. Tried switching between the other profiles back and forth but didn't help. My filter is 590nm and Lightroom version is 13.3.1. Any help is appreciated.

      @@royimagesdotcom This image appears to have been taken with a 590nm filter on an unconverted camera. This filter allows too much visible light to pass and will capture very little IR light. With unconverted cameras, you should use a 720nm filter, which captures only a sliver of visible light and allows more IR light to be captured.
