Thanks to NordVPN for sponsoring this video where I converted my Fuji X-T3 to Infrared for black and white landscape photography. In this video I take the camera out in to my local town to see if I can make a boring location interesting. The resulting images are different to anything I have photographed before, especially the last few. I'd love to know your thoughts on infrared photography, so let me know in the comments below.

What I liked the most about the video is how even seasoned pros still get worried that people are looking at them weird when they are taking pictures, it's very comforting.
I'm really glad that you've found something to keep your motivation throughout summer. I obviously love your usual content, but I really enjoy your summer series' as it forces you to try something else and push yourself out of your comfort zone and I think has birthed some of your most interesting videos!
Thanks a lot. So far, I'm enjoying the change. I very much see this camera as an addition to my usual kit 👍
@@ThomasHeatonPhoto Just a heads up, that scammer you told about is now replying around here...
@ indeed, same here. I have reported him to UA-cam.
Another great infra red video. Loved the graveyard, bench and final image. Great to see your enthusiasm in the summer months that gives the rest of us inspiration. Great work and thanks again. Looking forward to seeing seascapes when they happen.
Well said Conor, totally agree with your points! 👏😀👍
Yeah, I'm also looking forward to shooting the sea. On a blue sky day, with a good subject, it should look interesting with black water and sky.
As someone who practices street photography, the third shot easily takes the cake for me. But other than that, I choose the fourth shot as my favorite of the bunch. As what I presumed from IR photography being dramatically contrasty, that bright lone tree against the dark glass wall looks fantastic.
Shooting mainly architecture I know that feeling well trying to get an image with security close by. Loved the image you captured at the industrial park using the glass to make the tree stand out. The IR conversion looks a good decision so far Thomas and hopefully you will do some seascape with it to see what you can conjure up
Haha, man, I wasn't comfortable at all with all of the cars and security knocking around. I much prefer being in the middle of nowhere.
@@ThomasHeatonPhoto Remember Nick Carver’s advice, wear a hi-viz!
@@ThomasHeatonPhoto Majestic mountains? Fortunately I had the good sense to be born near the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
@@ThomasHeatonPhoto I once had the police called on my because I was by a railroad track, late at night, waiting for a train to go by under the lights from an adjacent store parking lot. A homeowner thought I looked suspicious so the police came out, ensured that I wasn't up to anything devious, that I didn't have any warrants out for my arrest and let me go back to what I was doing.
@@ThomasHeatonPhoto Why can't you talk to the camera with people around? Is there a law?
Wiow. Ir photo would safe my day, too many times I think. There's always days where you can't get a shot, then this is it. perfect.
I really love this kind of content. The photographs are of course supurb but it's the getting about locally (and on your bike) that really works for me. Showing that even local, an industrial estate or a country path is easily accessible to a photographer. Sure we can all visit Glen Coe or travel abroad, but we can also step outside our front doors and find beauty to take pictures of.
Hey Thomas, the last photo was absolutely breathtaking!!! Especially the foreground with those beautiful broad leafed plants. The looming clouds right behind the tree and upward almost look like a water colour artwork and start looking like they are the actual leaves of the tree. Not to contradict you but your boring town is actually very beautiful... love from India...
I love to see you on your bike after a while, my love for biking has grown recently mainly because I can explore some unexplored areas with my camera much faster than walking. it is a great way to scout for new compositions. Nice to see you enjoying your IR modification, it is so genuine that it shows on your face. Beautiful images as always Love the last one with the foliage and a lone tree
Glad you are still enjoying playing with your converted camera, some nice images glad you trying urban as well as rural areas.
I did exactly the same thing last weekend...lol...infra red is my new obsession....took a day off work tomorrow as the weather looks good ....love hunting out random churches in Essex as they always have great mature trees and stuff..great for wellbeing and no early starts!
Very fun, with interesting images. I remember another video when you were surprised at some of the images you got in the middle of summer in the middle of the day. Looks like you've found two good ways to deal with the summer doldrums. Strong work. Cheers!
Awesome video and I really appreciate all the work that went into it! So many different kinds of shots!
I had my old Nikon D5000 converted to an Infrared 850 nm camera a few years back and the shots I've taken with it are some of my best work. I would whole heartedly recommend anyone with an old camera (and about £280) to convert a camera that is rarely if ever used. I can still use all my lenses and get instant results.
Loving these videos regarding the infrared photography, not only is the subject great but your clear enthusiasm really sells it. Thanks
Thank you Thomas. Believe it or not because of you I expect my converted camera tomorrow. I can't wait to take the first IR pictures.
Glad your finally getting into infrared photography. I got into it 12 years ago while on a workshop. Everyday after the morning shoot most of the workshop people would go to get something to eat, edit and stuff until the late afternoon. However some had infrared converted cameras and just switched to them to keep on shooting. It made sense to me. Pay all that money to travel to a great place for photography you might as well use all the day. Harsh light is great with infrared.
Wow, talk about making you see the world differently! I am so glad you are diving into infrared, it is something I have been interested in for a while. Great shots!
So beautiful Thomas. That last photo was really spectacular. Thank you for sharing
Amazing images and great video Thomas
Watching this really gets my creative juices flowing. Excellent video, Thomas.
Always enjoy your videos Thomas, thoroughly enjoyed the livestream with Vahagan. Keep up your good work!
Great shots! Enjoyed.
"No place is boring, if you've had a good nights sleep and a pocket full of unexposed film" Robert Adams.
I respect this channel its a great resource for photographers. Landscape photography can be whatever you want it and spectacular eden like views are indeed important but the attitude that our own "backyard" isn't as worthy is what holds many photographers from becoming great photographers. IR or any other trick or gimmick is a great way to energise our view of where we live but our eyes and imaginations can do far more.
Excellent vid which not only describes the content, but also the self-conciousness of making the images in the first place. I can relate to this and at 61 years of age (and with limited mobility) I'm reluctant to take photographs where I'm watched by people who wonder why I'm taking pictures of a lamp post (however 'artistic' it seems to me). Thanks for posting. :)
I completely relate to your hesitation to record videos in front of other people. Honestly, I don't think I could relax enough to even record myself talking with no one around. Good work, Thomas. I appreciate the authenticity that you bring to your channel.
I can't do it with even nobody around. Nobody ever cares what I have to say. I'd feel like an idiot pretending otherwise.
Thomas I’ve been following you for a few years now. Your photos are awesome and your presentations on UA-cam are always the very best. You have convinced me to try infrared photography. So just the other week I sent one of my Fujifilm X-Pro2’s in to Kolari Vision to have it converted. I’m waiting anxiously for it to arrive. I can’t wait to try it out. Thanks for all that you do and for sharing all of your photos and travels with all of us.
fun seeing this different type of video Thomas! thought this was really interesting. awesome photos as always, have always admired you and your photography knowledge/skills!! :) have learned so much from you
fascinating 📷 transformations. well cool. and funny. enjoyed your livestream thingy yesterday.
Loving this IR vibe. I bought an IR filter about a year ago and rarely used it. A camera conversions the only way to do it. Thanks once again for the inspiration.
You can't buy an IR filter to go on the end of your lens. The whole point it to remove the existing IR filter from your sensor and replace it with one that allows IR through
@@chrisogrady28 You can indeed buy an IR filter. The one i purchased is from Urth. Granted, they do not give anywhere near the same effect as converting your camera which i was very much aware of before Tom posted this video. Tom gave me the impetus to convert a spare camera i had lying around unused. I repeat from my comment above, a camera conversions the only way to do it. Hope this helps Chris.
@@chrisogrady28 you can create some infrared images from unconverted cameras. However it requires long shutter times, so doesn't work well in situations with movement
@@chrisogrady28 The Hoya R72 filter which is the same filter wavelength that Tom had his camera converted too, can be used on a unconverted camera, although it will be a long exposure of which depends on how sensitive your camera, despite the IR blocking filter [ some are weaker than others ] is. It could be anything from 6-40 seconds in bright sunlight so you need a tripod, try pointing your tv remote at the camera in live view in the dark and it will be able to see it, although you won't as IR is invisible to the naked eye. Some camera lenses have a white dot on them, older ones have a red line on them. This is the IR focusing setting on the lens. The filter is like having a 25 stop ND filter on the lens.
@@chrisogrady28I bought an IR filter and it works but controlling focus and long exposures are a drawback.
Sent my old Oly EM5 off for a 720 nm conversion. Lost in the mail with the PO claiming it was received by a very oddly named person who did not exist at the conversion shop in Melbourne I sent it to. Fortunately they found it by looking at their surviailnence video for the exact delivery time. So I will soon be exploring my little suburb of Perth doing exactly what you did in this video. I’m an old B&W film photographer who interested enough to try infrared film, but found it difficult to pre visualise and so too time consuming and expensive to get control of. So this video was extremely helpful. Thanks. I’m subscribing.
Loved this one Tom, great to see you shooting every day subjects
The last photograph turned out exciting. So glad you figured out a way to enjoy the summer months with photography. I remember last few years and about this time of year you’d be getting depressed and completely disliking almost anything you would shoot. Good for you and keep it up!
I almost choked on my food when you said the mean streets of Whitley bay. Tom you seem much cheerier in your vlogs lately. I think the infrared is exactly what you needed
Agreed. I’ve come back to your channel now that you are cheery.
What do I like most about this video Thomas? No tripod, no backpack, not filters, no accessories, no exotic locations ... just your camera; handheld. A wonderful video! Thanks!!!
Excellent once more. Keep it coming Thomas.
Awesome video. Keep up the great work
IR is sadly under appreciated,so glad you found it,with the right lighting, clouds, foliage and subject the results are mind blowing.Portraits, with the same parameters and subject is amazing.
I took a photo of my wife in sunglasses. It was unreal. The glass were completely transparent on the photo.
@@ThomasHeatonPhoto sooo much to discover, try a fast flowing stream with mini rapids, long exposure, maybe 1 second or as needed.
Thank you for replying.
You’re like a kid with a new toy! Amazing photos and glad to see your excitement back.
I've been watching your channel for a while and I must say, these are some of your best images EVER!
Wow... love the drama that is conveyed in the high contrast. Agree that many of us will have to tailor our locations to our diminshing means. Another great video, thanks.
greate photographs! and nice to see you shooting local, thats somehow fresh and authentic!
Excellent video Thomas! Very interesting shots definitely must food for taught there. I taught the shot of the two ladies on the bench was class!
Had to laugh at some of the comps, and then how great the images turned out! Great video, and images Tom!!
Super inspiring to see how a dreadful summer is coming to life with this IR photography. Great images all of them.
These are amazing and beautiful. Thank you for sharing these.
Great shots and hilarious commentary LOL!
Great video (as always)... really pleased to see the IR conversion with Protech worked out so well :D
Very nice images Thomas, particularly liked the lone tree with the office glass behind and the two ladies on the bench with the crow was great 👌
Love the new experiment you doing with your content, hope you do a lot more like these. BTW the photos are actually awesome like what...
Always wanted to try this, even back in the days of film, but never did, great results and worth the effort for sure, thanks for sharing.
Loving the IR stuff, and its great to see Yr enthusiasm
Love the renewed energy the IR photography has given you. Was a very fun video.
I love the idea of IR photography. Your shot of the tree on the industrial estate is superb and I also liked the second pylon shot. I'm so pleased I found your channel.
I always like your work. Proper job my friend!
Another great video Thomas! such a cool video with a up and go vibe, you really are good at what you do. I was thinking during this video about converting my X1D or buying another M50 and converting that, Hmm ideas :)
So nice to see you excited about your photography as I know you struggle at times.
Tom, you keep building my excitement for IR. Going to get an XT-2 converted soon. Thanks for such great ideas. Cheers!
What stops me from producing more videos is the fact that I too get stressed out when filming in public. I hear it gets easier but because it hasn't for me I feel like I'm not "cut out for UA-cam". This video doesn't just have fantastic IR images, it proves to me that even successful UA-camrs experience the same thing. If Thomas can do it I can do it. I'm feeling very motivated now.
I imagine I can speak for many of your subscribers, it's a good thing you filled that gap of summer middays with this new fancy, as it provides us with great entertainment.
So dramatic and creative! Thank you for sharing this.
This is really interesting, love the images
Like a 'Very happy child in a sweetshop' comes to mind..... Trees and caravans though?! at least now I shan't be afraid of which print I bring along to 'Laskill country house' in September 😉
Love your video this has made me interested again in IR photography
Wow , I've always been a little dubious about infrared photography, but this video has inspired me , thanks Thomas, superb images
Really thought you were going to say - Sponsored by.........Greggs! When I saw the coffee cup, would have have been so impressed lol
Weird but amazing and relatable video!!!
Please keep up the good work
whole lot of nice images and seeing things in a new way
Infrared photography in Kansas / Oklahoma- Open Fields, Big Skies and Tornado’s … oh my!
Lov the tree in front of the building shot, nice one Thomas.
You’ve inspired me to revisit my home town with my IR converted camera
Man, the image with the tree in front of the building was great - perfectly composed and the IR really made it come alive.
so great seeing you happy and enthusiastic again..
Loving this IR stuff, great content for summer months
£260 well spent Tom , great way to fill the gap in your photography , those images have so much mood and mystery .
Very cool! Love to see the lighthouse in infrared.
New subscriber here, I am glad that I did after seeing you on Vahagraphy. Great job!!!
I've mentioned before that I cut my photography teeth down in Whitley Bay, after being unable to get a decent shot of the lighthouse on my phone. I was working on a contract down there, living Monday to Friday in a B&B on Espanlade, and spending the evenings pounding the seafront with the camera. As a beginner at the time none of my shots were any good. So it's always interesting when you stick close to home. But now, you've gone and grabbed shots of the office where I worked (Cobalt Business Park, not quite local to Whitley Bay), and the path where I walked at lunchtime - it never occurred to me back then to take pictures of either of these.
So it's brilliant to see these locations unexpectedly leap out of my computer screen. Thank you for sharing them.
Please do a video with color infrared profiles! It looks so unique and interesting
Thomas you have definitely inspired me to convert one of my Fuji cameras that never gets used. Great video. Thanks.
Cheers Tom, bought a filter and took my first infrared b&w shots yesterday. Looks like boring blue skies are a thing of the past. Andy
Love this, and who knew the cobalt could look so good!
Love the infra red images they look amazing. When you said you had a new sponsor for this video, the way you were waving your cup around, I thought you were going to say Greggs!🤣 Think of all those free pies!
Beautiful work my brother.
Hope this video does well cause that means you will do this more! Think it's great you going out doing this as it inspired me to go out and do the same
You have totally inspired me to get my xt1 converted. I have been thinking about it for ages. So now I am doing it.
Thanks
Well done as always Thomas!! Always inspiring, entertaining and full of quality images and ideas. Hmm, wonder if I should convert my A7RIII to infrared later this year when I hope to get the new Fujifilm X-H2 (I think that’s the model number). And your town might be boring to you, but it looks very cool to this Yankee. Would love to explore that coastline! Be happy🙋♀️👍
Amazing images!
Fantastic. Great shots. I want to have a go.
Great live stream with Alexey Sayle the other day! ;)
I think North Americans unfamiliar with the British self-effacing manner and not taking themselves too seriously can't imagine anyone with any level of success simultaneously remaining so level-headed and unassuming (as they repeated I don't know how many times...). I'm sure the point has been made many times before, but it's the mix of captivating narratives, well-crafted docu-style videos, fantastic landscape photography, all presented by a friendly northerner, that does it for me :)
As for this video, I was never a fan of infrared photography, at least in colour which is what I'd mostly seen examples of - I just couldn't see the appeal. But in b&w, the otherworldliness really comes through, with a level of abstractness which I think colour IR lacks, resulting in a "realistic-looking image with weirdly skewed colours".
I should also add that one of my niches I seem to have carved out for msyelf is that blend of natural and industrial - organic and synthetic - that I really love. It most often ends up being modern brutalist architecture with trees out in front ;)
Thank you Thomas for providing ideas and inspiration. So I have a Nikon D810 converted to full-spectrum for deep space astrophotography. Summer gives us clear skies but, the sun sets too late and rises too early. I'll now bring my D810 with me on bright summer day hikes to do IR photography.
Actually said 'oh wow' out loud at that shot of the ladies and the crow. Just stunning!
Very dramatic images. Would love to see you continue this series. Nicely done.
Now I'm all jealous. I've wanted an IR converted camera for a while, but just can't justify it. One of the things I love about photography is that it gives one the opportunity to "see" the world differently.
Try shooting bubbles in your driveway in the middle of the night because the season's ending and that's the only time you can get the temperatures you need to freeze them and tell me about people looking at you strangely. lol.
It's fascinating that the pylons are black. Hmmm... Maybe I should drag out my IR filters and try it again.
Just don't mess with the Whitley Bay and Cullercoats Massive Mr H.
Know know it it's gonna get messy down at the Feathers Caravan Holiday Park hood.
Love the shots this week. Keep up the good work. Neil
I recently took my GFX, Pentax67 and a XE2 that was converted to full-spectrum on a trip to India - and I ended up shooting the XE2 with an infrared filter the most! its so refreshing to see things in a different light.
Such a beautiful location to live. I've neglected my bike so far this summer. Have to get back on it soon! Have a great week.
Absolutely stunning.
I now have an urge to play 'Tunnel of Love'. 👍
Liked several photos but the tops in my estimation was the last photo (the “no B-Roll footage” photo). Great shot! Thanks as always.
looks as though IR opens up a whole new world. Thank you Thomas.
Super cool again!! Give us more :-D already looking for my own IR camera
