You dont need the Odagoron for the quest. Lynian Researcher randomly spawns at expeditions you can check in the map before entering whose npc will appear on map.
When you talked to the researcher, you can follow doodles on the area until the cat appears on the map for you to track it. when you find the cat, it will run away but not completely. just drop a raw meat on the spot you see it before running away and hide nearby. it will get the meat then you can talk to in to get the plunderblade
Just a heads up. You do NOT have to kill the Odogaron.
You only have to talk to the Researcher, if he's there, and wait or wander arround the map until the Odogaron brings the Legiana Corpse. The researcher actually even says so (kinda).
Then just talk to him again, follow the trail, place the meat, wait, approach, Done!
Also it seems that you can complete these quests without needing the researcher.
Personally I don't know if that goes for all these type of Quests or just a few. The only one I did where the researcher wasn't present was the quest in the Ancient Forest.

Researches isnt there for me + its as if odogaron doesnt spawn in expedition for me...
The researcher doesnt always spawn. Just try it again another time.
And no, it can be Low Tier Missions too.
As a note, it also doesn't need to be a Legiana corpse. It's anything that the Plunderer can scavenge.

If you have veteran friends to play with then it makes learning the game 10× easier. The tutorials are useless in my opinion because we came here to play not read.
Master Of Recipe Yeah but unfortunately if you're a veteran you miss things like this because you just skip through the tutorials.
Plus most vets won't use the base camp. It used to be good for the bed so you can heal up but with no chance to fail at creating potions etc and the speed at which you can run around and grab herbs and honey as you go you never run out of potions so only unprepared or new hunters will likely ever enter the tent to find the stash.
Hey you don't have to worry about the researcher as long as you find the cat your ok. I didn't even find the researcher & still got the blade

This game has so much content and depth that it feels overwhelming at first. You really have to sink your teeth into it and then you realize how fucking amazing it is.
Fun Fact: You can use Plunderblade on Slain bodies of big monster.
Let's say you just killed Nergigante, and you have 60 seconds til you go back to camp or Astera. If you Plunderblade is available you can stand in the body and activate it. The Palico will Say he Use the Plunderblade Successfully.

lol i got the plunderblade accidentally xD i was on an expedition looking for val hazak's trail then the cat popped up... i chased him and gave him raw meat then i got the tool... i didnt even meet the lynian researcher yet...

cordney ellis i just went on a high rank expedition at rotten vale... while i was looking for an elder dragon trail i found the cat at odogaron's nest.. which was the place shown in the video.. maybe the cat didnt trigger for you because you were on a low rank expedition? try doing it on a high rank expedition...
KickButtJC when youre on the map choosing your expedition location... press R2(i think) then it should set your expedition on high rank... there should be a tab on the upper left corner on the screen saying if its low or high rank expedition

dirtyzombiedude my first encounter with him was in the arena for the event since I’m waiting for my friends to catch up to me, (currently at the Legiona quest). I just farmed that event and have his armor set already

Alright guys, leaving this comment in hopes that it helps anyone who is having trouble like I was. Firstly, as a response to some of the tips in the comments here, I have NOT done any of the other Palico equipment quests. This was my first one. I did NOT do anything with the clan in the Ancient Forest first either. Also, I was on a low level map at the time but people in the comments here have reported being able to do it in a high level instance as well. Anyways, it sounds like a lot of people are confused by the exact steps especially since some seem to accidentally stumble into the cat because of their miraculous timing, unaware of the triggers that have already happened to allow for their chance encounter so I'm going to try to break down exactly how I got this.
Go on an expedition to the Vale, but before departing, check to see if the researcher you need to talk to is listed before you depart (if not, then go to the vale, return, and try again until he IS there as the green dot as shown in the video). In the video he walks up AND sees the cat AND talks to the guy at the same time. This was NOT my experience. The researcher was there but NO cat cutscene. I had to talk to the old man, and then upon talking to him AGAIN after being confused, he asked me to wait with him on his stake-out (basically this guy is waiting for the Odogaron to return to that room with the corpse of a Legiana in its mouth or another piece of food). Hide next to him (as in no weapons out, and click the hide button (X on PS4) and wait for the Odogaron (I waited for about 4-5 minutes) to drop off the food and then leave the room. He shouldn't spot you if you're hiding next to the researcher. After the Odogaron left, only then did the cat come running out and give me the cutscene. The rest of the quest played out exactly as shown from that point onward in the video. I was able to follow the cat to the little cave, scare him off up into the rocks, plant the food on the floor, hide, and then his buddies came and I got the cutscene in which they presented me the Plunder Blade. Hope this can clear up all the confusion that I'm seeing here in the comments. Good hunting!

Now if only i had this for Nergigante... did his optional quest 20 times to get enough stuff for his longsword and 3 armor peices
People saying you don’t need the researcher are wrong. They had to have talked to him previously and forgot. You have to talk to him to be able to place meat. A corpse of any kind has to be in the area. There are 4 spots the odogoron drops it. You don’t need to kill it.
You do not actually have to kill the Odogaron. Simply leave the area the Lynian Researcher is in then come back and the Legiana body and the cat should spawn. From there, just chase the cat then feed him.

I stumbled across this video trying to learn how to get monster gems easier as soon as I finished this I went on an expedition to the vale and fought the odogaron. It ran to area 6 after I cut off its tail and found the body of the wyvern and dragged it back to its den. After that the cat appeared I followed him and got the weapon. Thanks, this will make grinding for a legiana gem easier
Yeah when I started the quest I just waited with the Lynarian researcher until I literally saw the Odogaron come through a hole with a Legania in his mouth (Yikes!). Then...He just left...No joke, he walks off without even attacking me (Though if he is aggressive, a ghille mantle could come in handy to avoid conflict). Then after waiting a little bit one of the Grims came out and bam! I was on my merry way to making some new friends.
If you're reading this before the video, I recommend you bring raw meat before doing any of this. There won't be a penalty if you don't but it just makes it faster so that you don't have to back track or get some.

Just finished Quest w/o the Old Man nor killing Oroganti or w/e his name nor needing to see any corpse.
I entered Map w/o any Quest from Camp 11. Saw Oroganti walk past w/ Meat in his mouth. Ran over to room 13 but nothing there. No man. No corpse. Left to check cat area 15. Nothing. Came back to 13 cuz Green marker on Map. Saw cat. Cat ran away to 15. Warped to 11 camp for Raw Meat. Came back to 15 to feed the cats.

TheRealFlowzz - figured I'd share since I was surprised I could accomplish such w/o the Old Man nor anything else. I just checked both Areas & it worked np.
The researcher spawn if u get the Vagorwasp flash bug and coral horn for your cat so it's related to your progress with the cat tools and make sure to carry raw meet to drop it inside the nearby cave and that's about it

Just go to odogarons rest spot area 13, lynian researcher should be spawned in there as well. Simply just wait. I waited 5 min. Odogaron pops in with a legiana corpse. Remain still, cat comes in... he runs away.. follow your scoutflies to where he ran to. You discover him and he runs away again. Lay down some raw meat. Hide behind some cover, they come out and thank you for the raw meat and they give you plunder blade easy.
Don’t kill the odoragon, leave it alone and instead equip the camouflage mantle and follow it, the odoragon will walk towards the legiana corpse and drag it back to its nest which is where the cat spawns, the thing you need to make sure of is to agro or kill all other monsters as they would compete with the odoragon for the food. If you’re lucky then the Odoragon is left alone to drag the legiana home. The Odoragon seems to leave the meat alone if you’re not there to see it drag the legiana though.

You don't need to talk to the elder you can start them whenever u want in a expedition you just gota find the grimalkyne of the map your in and do what they tell you or do something specific (example the rotten vale you need to put a raw meat in a certain area where a grimalkyne runs away from you and you just hide and wait abit till he comes down with his friends and then you can speak to them without spooking them)
Aslo you don't need to kill odogaron for it to spawn they're already there just go to said area and put the meat down and hide.
Quick question. The PlunderBlade in a sense is like the Banditcloak as they both increase the chance of rare drops to fall off. However if you wore the Banditcloak and your Palico has the PlunderBlade can they stack on how many items the monster will drop or is it capped at a certain amount?
Add the bandit mantel. You have a nice little farm.

I got it that way (took me 2 mins):
Expedition to the valley and go to the cave. I think its 13. Then I went though the vines at the end of the cave on the right. I made a circle around the cave and letf though the vines on the other side. Then the legiana and the cat spawned. Thats it. Then just follow the instructions in the video.
For the cat to appear, you need the odogaron to carry the dead legiana to the room.

Just talk to the researcher and he'll tell you that the monster will drag the corpse back. Just wait there and it'll show up with the corpse and you'll find the cat
I actually discover all of this when I was a noob and I went back to base to get meat, and the cat never leaves. 😂

I don't think its random that the cat shows up after odogaron drops the legiana corpse, I've done it on 5 different game files so far (did it for friends since I was familiar with the quest) and it has always shown up instantly as the odogaron leaves after dropping the corpse.

you can actually see that cat at top of the forest.Ride some birds or whatever you call it at area 5 at the first region and when your at the top now, explore the area.I seen that cat but I never know how to get it, it will just run away from you
That's a different palico that gives you a different quest for a different palico gadget. You have to follow him after he runs away.

Btw you don’t have to kill the monster if the cat isn’t there. Just leave the area for like 2 minutes come back he’ll be there.

First of all, the palico man only spawns if you do expedition. Secondly, you DO NOT have to kill or capture Odo.
After talking to the man, the quest begins, his last line of dialogue says everything, be patient.
I took this video's advice at first and captured Odo, but nothing happened. When he respawned, I hid in some bones and waited for him to do his rounds, about 3 minutes later he came back with a Legiana corpse.
All you have to do is stay hidden (the entire time, and from my experience so far, Odo is usually docile until provoked). After about a minute the cat will show up, (your pali will inform you when he does so just wait for him to start talking).
The rest is simple, this video just makes the first part seem a lot more confusing than it is. Had me running around in circles trying to get him to spawn, literally all you have to do is wait it out.
There is a moss pig right next to the grimalkyne area.

Dude, you just have to check the world map first, it gives you a heads up on what researcher is in the map at any time, you jsut have to go in and out of expeditions until his name pops up

Im using the dual blades atm and im a solo player, is there a better weapon choice for me or should i keep with the dual blades since im about 3/4 done with the campaign

Got this first try hunting the red dog. Sorry can't remember monster names. If you sit in the corner with the researcher though. The red dog comes by every 5-10 minutes. Wait for one to drop a corpse and bingo. Lol found this out playing phone games doing dailies for Galaxy of heroes.
Plunderblade doesn't knock off items palico holds those until the end. Its the upgrade Plundrang that knocks of monster parts to the ground.

If you’ve gotten to the point where you have to put raw meat down but leave the quest, does the entire event reset?
I got it without talking to the researcher or fighting the odogaron i never triggered that scene where it goes up to the corpse either
I have been using it since I got it and even against some of the new monsters that I can't kill yet in high rank doing hit and run tactics with it just to get some drops off of it still works and has enabled me to craft so of the new monsters armor/weapons without kill them just because of the drops from it. Is it efficient doing this by all means no but is it a way to find out some of their drops yes. It is also very useful during a turf war just letting your palico go in and rip pieces off and you run around looting it all while the 2 monsters duke it out.
If you look at the expeditions it will tell you wether or not that guy will be on the map.

You don’t really explain how and where to find the Lynian researcher. It’s key to know where to find him to get the plunder blade.
tested myself it is not random, once you talk to him fast travel to a camp and walk back leggiana and the cat will be there follow drop the meat and back off and boom plunderblade all yours to use

showed my brother how to get it and since he got carapace from nergigante he was able to make the rarity 8 weapon within 3 fights
ok what if your rotten vale map starts with the researcher but not with an odogaron? do you restart or wait the possibly hours it will take for odo to spawn in
Farming common materials is not a problem. The real headache is always gem. Fuking gems....

Unless the Plundering Blade has a chance to drop Plates and Gems I probably wouldn’t bother using this. In general you’ll have more crafting materials than you’ll need just from farming plates and gems.
Silly question but is this high rank only? Or is it obtainable at a certain point of the story line? Just curious as to when i should start the hunt for this bad mamajama!!! Thanks ^_^
