I'm Brazilian. Here we have a lot of youtubers teaching how to play, but your videos are the best. Your tutorials are clear, objective and joyful to watch.
Well, I actually fell asleep yesterday. Not your fault. I twisted my back getting stuff ready for the move, and had taken a muscle relaxer, and it made me tired and I had to sleep. So I finished the video today. This is AMAZING!!!! I can tell that you are a big fan , you could barely contain your excitement. I put this on my wish list. I think my wife would like it too. She likes action step games like this, and it is not dependent on knowledge of the movies, so she would really enjoy it. Video gets five stars as usual, and the game gets two thumbs way up!! (By the way fortunately, my back is much better today).
It always makes me sad when I get a new game and you haven't done a how to play on it yet. You really are the best in the business. Thanks for the hard work you do!
I think Rodney makes the best rules explanations videos out there! Very clear, concise&thorough, great editing and, importantly, error-free! I will watch Rado's runthroughs or the Dice Tower or the Shut up and sit down reviews (and many others) to get some insights into strategies, hear critical comments or just laugh BUT Watch it Played its my first go to choice when I actually want to learn the game. After Rodney's explanations, the others are easier to follow and enjoy, because you already understand how to play the game! Thank you Rodney, keep them coming!!
Love the Tabletop Showcase idea. The Godfather wasn't on my radar but watching the two videos so far, I think it looks like a lot of fun! Thanks for all your work!
I have to admit, this wasn't too high on my list, but there were several really clever mechanisms that gave me visions of how things would play out with my groups. Now I'm really excited. This Tabletop Showcase has been outstanding so far. Thanks and keep up the great work!
Got the game for my birthday! Great game, and also AWESOME introduction video. At first had some problems/questions about the rules, but now everything is clear and is a SUPER board game to play with your friends. Keep the good job!
Hi! We played a lot of this game and I still have one question. its about this: boardgamegeek.com/thread/1828086/complete-job-card-not-task As written the rules says: page 17 (Showdown example).: "...they take 5$ card into their hand are ABLE to use the Front ability" I understand that in a 3 person game it would be logical if there would be your turf (controlled by me) and two opponent thugs on it and you would like to use card "Take the Cannoli": gun down one enemy Thug, it would be better just to take the Money and not use the ability. However if that is possible in a lot of other JOB cards can be played that way - it loses the purpose in my opinion. Thank you for patience and answering all the questions.
CAR KRALJ Happy to help with this. The official answer is: - If you perform a job, you must take the rewards and perform the actions if able. - You may complete any job if you have the resources it may demand. If you are unable to claim the rewards or perform the ability, then you simply don’t - but that doesn't prevent you from playing the job.
After seeing this video a few years ago I finally got my hands on a copy of this game and so excited to play it!! Almost impossible to find in the UK so had to get it imported from the states. Keep up the great work Rodney and the team
Great video Rodney. Loving Tabletop Showcase so far! Looking forward to the rest of the videos. The way this game plays is right up my alley. One of my favorites is Sons of Anarchy: Men of Mayhem and the mechanics seem to have some similarities and I love the organized crime theme. I have a feeling I'll have an easier time getting this one to the table, since The Godfather is pretty much universally loved and SoA doesn't seem to be a popular IP among gamers. Really looking forward to playing this one! Thanks for the video and the contest!
I can't wait for the next showcase now... Watch it played and the Secret Cabal pod cast, have really done justice to this game, I am looking forward to the rest of the weeks events. and great job again Rodney for you great tutorial on how to play.
Hi Rodney, we did our first game earlier and this scenario came up: Player A controls the Upper East Side Turf. Player B uses his thug to do the Pawnbroker action. So both Players A and B get the horse token and 1 dollar reward. I get it that the player who used the thug chooses which one does the action first - so technically IF the player wants to, he can choose that Player B goes first, THEN Player A goes next. So the first player horse token actually goes to Player A (even though Player B used the action space).
Hey Carl, as you say, the active player decides the order in which the players resolve the action, so they can choose Player A to go first or Player B.
I got a chance to play this at origins and it was great. It's a total Lords of Waterdeep killer... lots more player interaction, and the theme is more immersive with the components. Glad this video is up, as the CMON demo crew nerfed or over simplified the rules during the demo. I absolutely loved this game... can't wait until it hits retail and is added to my game group!
Wow. Great through explanation and review. I should've clicked on this link long ago. Watched a confusing one before I played the demo. It was fun, but I had like tons of question that the manual didn't clarify, yet - all my questions have been answered by this excellent review. Thanks!
Playing this tomorrow! Such an underrated game - thankful for your video- perfect for a review! ☺️ also! Rodney!! I finally got your promo for my Dead of Winter game!!! It’s gonna be rad. 👏🏻
Yah making ALL the figures out of cheap soft plastic was a bad idea. Why invest thousands into making a good game and then cheapen that game by having the figures made of grade D plastic. Metal. Thats the way to go.
Well, this is DEFINITELY on my radar now. The overview really helped learn about it. I'm eagerly awaiting the contest draw! (I figure my odds must be better than Lotto Max)
Rodney, I know have watched (or listened) to all the Tabletop Showcase entries for The Godfather Corleone's Empire. Everyone did their job excellently. I have already (before Tabletop Showcase) ordered my copy of the game from my local game retailer. Tabletop Showcase only made me want the game sooner (I cannot wait until I get it). I think you should continue with Tabletop Showcase. Like you said in your teaser for Tabletop Showcase, it should only be for the best games, not every game that hits the market. So I agree with you, only 1 to 2 Tabletop Showcases a year would be sufficient. Now that Tabletop Showcase is over, will you do a complete game play with Pep with this game, or do you think that only 2 players might not be enough to show this game in its true form? Again, thank you and everyone else involved in Tabletop Showcase and keep up the good work.
Glad you enjoyed the series Graham! Board Game Replay did show some highlights from their 2 player game, so it's certainly one we could do on the channel as well. We'll just have to see what the schedule allows :)
That's not a sticker :) Portal games puts our logo on the box as a reminder that we have a video for that particular game. I don't 'think' it was intentional cross promotion from Matt, but if it was, a kind thanks to him!
That game looked complicated at first glance, but I feel like I understand it much better now, thanks to you. So feel free to have me win a copy so I can play it. :)
Loving the showcase so far! I think this was a great idea to allow the best media creators in the hobby talk about a game without all of them making the same video. I look forward to see what's next. Also, I may have missed this, but how many showcases does the group plan on doing each month?
So glad you're enjoying these Brock! We only plan to do, at most, 2 a year. These are intended to be special events (and we all how pretty full schedules already :) ).
even though I jokingly call this Godfather's blood rage, which it is, because it is by Eric Lang, I do think it is slightly more fun than blood rage and is a good adaptation of those mechanics. I think this is the best Godfather game on the Market.
Hey, just began playing this game yesterday! Had a few questions that could be answered to help me. 1: There are multiple Police Chief cards divided by the acts in terms of Allies, but only one figure. What happens if two different players get the Police Chief(for example, Act 1 version can move a person, while Act 2 can kill one person)? Same for Union Boss or Mayor, does one person lose the one they had? Just curious. 2.The game says to place the first job from the lowest section. Is that Wall Street? And is there any specific way we need to place the job tiles(clockwise, etc;)? 3. How many tiles are considered adjacent in terms of shaking down the backs of businesses?
Hey there, I'm always happy to try to help with rules questions, but if the answer is provided in the video, than I have to direct you there. You'll find an index in the description to help you find the section you might be looking for.
Thanks for yet another amazing video. I honestly love the your channel! It's amazing work you're doing here. You've taught me so many games. Any tips for a beginner Board Game UA-cam? :) haha
Hi Rodney! This is my first time commenting on your videos, and I just want to say, these videos are super helpful! I almost pick games to buy based on if it has a watch it played or not! Question: During the turf war phase, if blue has a thug, and yellow has a thug in the area, but blue also has a alley in that area, does that mean the blue gets the influence token? Super excited about this game! I've been on the fence of whether to buy this game or not, but the second I saw that you're doing a tabletop showcase, I pre-ordered it immediately!
Glad you're enjoying the videos - and thanks for taking the time to comment :) Great question - one of the things we mention in the video, is that after an ally figure is played and resolved, it becomes neutral. It still exerts influence, but not for any player - just for itself. So in the example you describe, there would be a 3 way tie between yellow, blue and the neutral piece.
maybe it is just me, but I can't see that you have done a How To Play video about the game "Betrayal at House on the Hill", it would be nice if you could explain how the game works.
One quick way to check what we're featured is to check here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watch_It_Played As for other games, I avoid pre-announcing the games I'm going to cover in case my schedule changes (I don't like to disappoint).
Great stuff as usual :) Was planning on buying this before and when you announced the Tabletop Showcase I wasn't surprised that this game was your pick but so glad it was. I really wanted to know more about it before I bought it and this with the combined effort of the other contributors ( especially @BoardGameReplay ) sealed the deal. :) Questions: what's up with playing the blood money cards upside down ? My non-existing OCD kicked in every time it happened :) And how do I use the Rodney "Mountie" with this game or is he to nice for this and will his horse be okay ? ;) Keep up the good work
clarification please: during the bribe phase, is a player restricted to at most one money card? You said "each player opens their suitcase and moves any amount of money found there into the lid." slightly confusing when the later examples only had at most one card.
Thanks for the video, it was very helpful. I have a few questions: 1) When you have control of a turf, and another player shakes down the front of a business in that turf, are you required to perform the action associated with the front of that business, or can you choose not to? For example, you might not want to exchange 2 or 3 of the cards in your hand for money. 2) If I shake down the front of a business in a turf that I control, do I collect that ability twice (once for the thing that I placed, and again for having control), or only once? 3) One of the Police Chief All cards allows you to move the Police Chief to a territory and kill all of the enemy figures in that turf. If the Police Chief is already on the board, am I required to move it to a different turf, and then kill enemies, or can I kill enemies in the turf that the Police Chief is already positioned in? Thanks for your help!
1) You can choose not to. 2) You do not get the benefit twice from shaking down a business in a district you control. 3) You can "move" it to the same location. Hope that helps!
19:59 So you take back the allies _after_ the bribery phase in ACT I, so you technically have ACT I allies when advancing to _ACT II?_ Or how am I supposed to understand?
That is correct. You will have your Act 1 allies in Act 3 (and 3), assuming you don't choose to discard them (remember, they count against your hand limit at the end of a round).
Dear Rodney, Will you be doing a lets play of this game before it has been released? Or only after? I would love to see some gameplay as there is only one from Joel.
I can't say for sure, it will depend on my schedule (I don't like to pre-announce, as things can change, and I don't want to disappoint). Board Game Replay also did an examination of the game with highlights from 4 different player counts, which you might find helpful: tabletopshowcase.com/
Watch It Played Yeah I saw those. I was disappointed as they werent actual gameplays but more of a discussion on how the different player count felt. Would love to see an actual act by act Lets Play.
another question: are this season's WIP backers that het automatically entered into the contests this season also automatically entered into this one, or do we need to enter our info manually for this contest?
Good question! I felt for this one, since it's a collaborative project with other channels, that I should remove my 'auto' entries. So for this one you'd need to enter manually. I will make a note about this in the next New and Updates video.
At about the 22:01 mark, give or take a second, you state in the act IV tribute phase that IF you discard $$, that money can be put into your suitcase. I do NOT see this nuance in the rule book. As I read the rules, they maintain that ANY cards discarded during ANY of the tribute phases go back to their respective piles. I see no reference to the exception you spoke of in Act IV. Clarification?
Hey Daniel, I think there's a little confusion there. I'm saying you discard down to 2 cards, and if those cards (the 2 you have left, not the ones you discarded), are money, you can put that into your suitcase. For example, if I have 5 cards in my hand and discard 3, then if either or both of the 2 remaining in my hand are money, they can be suitcased.
If I complete a job that allows me to suitcase money, am I able to suitcase the money that I collect from completing that job on the same turn, or do I need to wait until my next turn?
So what's the balance between worker-placement and area-control? Which part is the more important part, or are they fairly evenly balanced? This actually looks really good... just slightly cutthroat but I think we would definitely enjoy it!
when i played it, it was very well balanced. the chance you take trying to own a territory for multi resource farming of things you might not need, vs. chasing placement for the things you do need are pretty cool. its a good tension. you definitely have to have a plan a,b and c... especially in a multiplayer game. plus when a car bomb or a drive by hits and your guys are killed... man it hurts. you want a family member out there for more resources... but that makes them a bigger target for assassination... so do you go the thug route... its a good tension.
Love it, i just bought it. Good explication. Just one doubt when a thug Shake down a business the other player who have the control collect the same benefict or collect the back oí the business?
Hello Rodney. Thank you for the video. Help please, have a number of questions. 1.In the video 10.30 min said, when placing the figures of thugs on an empty slot in a particular location, a player may not apply the effects listed in the lower part of the location. The question is whether in this case to apply these effects to the player who controls the area? 2.Can I pull the same "trick" with Union bosses? 3. THE EXECUTION OF ORDERS.After a reset the required set of illegal goods the player gets the money and can not apply the effect of the card?
+Mаксим Мелочников I’ve sent the first two questions to CMON just to double check. I’m not sure what you’re asking in question 3. It’s tricky because I’m travelling right now, so I don’t have the game or components in front of me.
+Mаксим Мелочников Just heard back. If you place a Thug, even if you don’t use the benefit, you are still considered to be “shaking down the business”, so the controlling playing at that location may choose the gain the benefit (even if you didn’t). Works the same with the Union Boss.
Still a bit confused on adding business's during first phase. Does a business get added in only one turf on each turn starting with the lowest number, skipping over occupied ones in higher player number games. So on act two in a five player game you'd add a business to Queens? Vice versa in a two player game you'd add it to Brooklyn instead?! Doesn't seem explained well in book...
+Matafer Rats, I'm not in front of the game right now to confirm you example, but it sounds like you have it right. Basically, it's like this. Depending on the number of players, you'll start the game with a certain number of business in play. Businesses are always added to the lowest numbered turfs first and go in ascending order. Each round, including the first one, there is a phase to add a single new business. That is also added to the lowest valued turf that isn't currently covered with a business. Hope that helps.
Another awesome video! Just a question though, what size are the cards? They look like standard MTG size? And will they fit in the suitcases even when sleeved. Yes, I'm one of those players who feel the need to sleeve cards in a game 😬
The "Can't refuse card" it's my understanding that you could only put discarded money cards in your suitcase since the suitcase action says you can ONLY suitcase money. When you complete a job, you "put" the job card in your suitcase. There is some debate that you can take discarded job cards and suitcase them. Do you know one way or the other Rodney?
Watch It Played Hi Rodney, what happens if a player discarded an illegal good or an ally? And you have chosen that card. Do you get to keep the card in your hand instead of putting it in the suitcase?
Nope. Only applicable if opponent discarded job/money, because the action would be to suitcase, and those are the only type of cards that you can suitcase.
There are 4 Acts (or rounds) in the game. In each act you follow all the steps as outlined by the spaces that the police car moves through. You'll find this illustrated here: ua-cam.com/video/mVz43Sb4NwM/v-deo.html&t=322
Just to be clear, you mean - if you have your token on top of a stack in a turf - do you still get the bonus when a union shakes down a turf there? Yes.
Watch It Played Hi Rodney! Sorry for asking this late question.. Can you help reconfirm your answer above please? You mean that a player, who plays a “Shakedown” job card on a business under his/her controlled turf, will gain the front bonus 2 times?..
Sorry for my bad english...I try to explane another time my question. If i put a tooken marker for example on wall street after first act,and another Player in the second act put a thug over "find i job",i can choose to not take me too the card"find a job"?
Yes, but it would be worth nothing at the end of the game. If they discard a job, you could suitcase that, which might help you win majority in a job set.
Kickstarters should hire you to do How to Play's in their campaign. Good stuff as usual.
CMON literally did just that for Zombicide: Green Horde. Their day 1 launch involved a Rodney Smith tutorial!
Many already did.
Thanks for the kind words!
One of my favorite games! Streamlined, smart, strategic, and suspenseful! Thanks for the clear instructions, Rodney!
Still one of my favorites too Dane!
Awesome work, Rodney!! Your videos make it so easy to start playing right away. You are truly appreciated.

And funny enough, watching this movie currently with my son :)
I am disappointed with the 1st Player Marker. I propose changing it with a real live cat to place on our lap.
I heard that was the plan, but due to legal and ethical issues involving the shipping of live animals in a game box, the idea was scrapped.
You make a good point.
I would throw you both off the Hudson River for disagreeing with me!

Really great video. Bur am I the only one that sees a lot of parallels to Blood Rage?
I'm sure you're not! I imagine some parallels will be drawn.
That game looked complicated at first glance, but I feel like I understand it much better now, thanks to you. So feel free to have me win a copy so I can play it. :)
Ha! I'll wish you the best of luck, how's that?
Wow Wonderful explanation... I think I'm gonna love this game...
Thanks Javier, glad you came by to check it out!
Simple, easy, love it
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video.
Great video! Very clear rules explanation as usual, thanks! )
Thanks Artur, glad you liked it!
Thank you for ur explanation!!You are my hero!!!!!
So glad this was helpful :)
Thanks Rodney! 🙂
You're welcome!
Awesome video. Do the suitcases fit sleeved cards?
Yep!
I like the game , i think i will buy it if my friends are down to play it :)
Did you end up getting to try it out?
Yaaaaaaaay!!!!! Hi Rodney!!!! Keep up the awesome work!!! (Maybe Massive Darkness when it's released someday?)
Hey John -thanks for the kind words (we'll see about Massive Darkness).
John Smith I second this! Massive Darkness looks awesome!
This looks excellent. Thank you for the video!
Thank you for checking it out!
even though I jokingly call this Godfather's blood rage, which it is, because it is by Eric Lang, I do think it is slightly more fun than blood rage and is a good adaptation of those mechanics. I think this is the best Godfather game on the Market.
matthlowder Yeah, it looks more fun. Not having "action points" and having to fight by dealing cards make this way better, in my opinion.
Still a favorite game of mine!
Great introduction to the game. 👍
Thank you! I'm glad the video was helpful!
This game seems really fun, thanks for sharing :)
Thank YOU for checking it out!
Loving this feature so far!
These minis look like they'd be awesome to paint. Will def. need a primer coat though to negate the black plastic
Glad you're enjoying Showcase so far Ben!
I seen Sam from the dice tower uses a black primer for some reason. I think the primer is still necessary no matter the color but idk I'm a noob.
Just seen that at the store! Thanks for this video! I think I'll get it! :)
+ZoidbergForPresident I hope you have a great time playing!
Thanks for the contest!
All the best!
Thanks for yet another amazing video. I honestly love the your channel! It's amazing work you're doing here. You've taught me so many games. Any tips for a beginner Board Game UA-cam? :) haha
Thanks for the kind words! As for tips, you might find this helpful: ua-cam.com/video/mUj6ay_YsAY/v-deo.html
Great video, as always! So helpful.
Thank you Paul - I hope you have a great time playing!
Glad you're enjoying the videos - and thanks for taking the time to comment :)
Great question - one of the things we mention in the video, is that after an ally figure is played and resolved, it becomes neutral.
One quick way to check what we're featured is to check here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watch_It_Played
As for other games, I avoid pre-announcing the games I'm going to cover in case my schedule changes (I don't like to disappoint).
Great stuff as usual :)
Was planning on buying this before and when you announced the Tabletop Showcase I wasn't surprised that this game was your pick but so glad it was. I really wanted to know more about it before I bought it and this with the combined effort of the other contributors ( especially @BoardGameReplay ) sealed the deal. :)
Questions: what's up with playing the blood money cards upside down ? My non-existing OCD kicked in every time it happened :)
And how do I use the Rodney "Mountie" with this game or is he to nice for this and will his horse be okay ? ;)
Keep up the good work
I look forward to seeing your Mountie variant :) Glad you enjoyed the videos from this series!
clarification please: during the bribe phase, is a player restricted to at most one money card? You said "each player opens their suitcase and moves any amount of money found there into the lid." slightly confusing when the later examples only had at most one card.
Yep, you can use any amount of money during the bid, including more than 1 money card.
Watch It Played Thanks!
Thanks for making this video!
You're very welcome, glad you liked it!
OH MY GOD I ALREADY PREORDERED IT !!!!! AHHHHHHH!
Hey Rodney, can you review Risk: Game of Thrones Collectors Edition, please?
Thanks for the interest - I talk a bit about that here: ua-cam.com/video/EdtDuvIUa6A/v-deo.html&t=342
Hoping to pick this up! It's on Amazon for $29!
I hope you have a great time playing!
@@WatchItPlayed wow! Didn't expect you to reply to a 3 year old video. Thanks for responding ☺️
Dear Rodney,
Will you be doing a lets play of this game before it has been released? Or only after? I would love to see some gameplay as there is only one from Joel.
I can't say for sure, it will depend on my schedule (I don't like to pre-announce, as things can change, and I don't want to disappoint). Board Game Replay also did an examination of the game with highlights from 4 different player counts, which you might find helpful: tabletopshowcase.com/
Watch It Played Yeah I saw those. I was disappointed as they werent actual gameplays but more of a discussion on how the different player count felt. Would love to see an actual act by act Lets Play.
I may do one if I get a chance - I'd like to!
another question: are this season's WIP backers that het automatically entered into the contests this season also automatically entered into this one, or do we need to enter our info manually for this contest?
Good question! I felt for this one, since it's a collaborative project with other channels, that I should remove my 'auto' entries. So for this one you'd need to enter manually. I will make a note about this in the next New and Updates video.
I'm looking forward to a game...
Excellent!
Thank you!
If I complete a job that allows me to suitcase money, am I able to suitcase the money that I collect from completing that job on the same turn, or do I need to wait until my next turn?
You can collect the money first and then perform the suitcase action.
Hope you got a chance to try it and see!
Love it, i just bought it. Good explication. Just one doubt when a thug Shake down a business the other player who have the control collect the same benefict or collect the back oí the business?
They collect the "same" benefit.
Nice tutorial video and also I'm earning some money to buy the game
I hope your savings go well, and you enjoy the game!
@@WatchItPlayed thank you vey much and I hope you continue making some tutorial videos
Wait, where's the spinny box?
Was this before the spinny box?
This was!
Nice video Rodney! I want to play this game now!! (>"
Thanks for checking it out!
Another awesome video! Just a question though, what size are the cards? They look like standard MTG size? And will they fit in the suitcases even when sleeved. Yes, I'm one of those players who feel the need to sleeve cards in a game 😬
Yes and yes!
If someone discards a job, then you can suitcase that using Can't Refuse.
Watch It Played thanks for the quick reply. I will play this way next game, which is tonight's yay!
This game needs a deluxe 2nd edition so bad! C'mon CMON!
I'd love to see it!
Just started watching this .. is there a 'It was you Fredo !" card ? I am sure that there is a horses head card or meeple
The horse head is the first player marker I showed :)
So in a 3, 4 and 5 player game, the third thug is discarded from the game? Or do you add it to the second or fourth act along with family members?
Discarded from the game.
im always just confused when i watch videos like this ... is the act 1 just preperation?
There are 4 Acts (or rounds) in the game. In each act you follow all the steps as outlined by the spaces that the police car moves through. You'll find this illustrated here: ua-cam.com/video/mVz43Sb4NwM/v-deo.html&t=322
I have a question. Since allies are neutral, do we get benefit from shaking down a turf that we dominate with the union boss?
Just to be clear, you mean - if you have your token on top of a stack in a turf - do you still get the bonus when a union shakes down a turf there? Yes.
Watch It Played Yes. That's what I meant. Thank you!
Do we also get the benefit of owning a turf by using the shakedown job?
Yep!
Watch It Played Hi Rodney! Sorry for asking this late question..
Can you help reconfirm your answer above please? You mean that a player, who plays a “Shakedown” job card on a business under his/her controlled turf, will gain the front bonus 2 times?..
A question...if i have a marker and a player put a thug on my area,is a choice get the benefit?
Hey there, I'd like to help, but I'm having a bit of trouble understanding the question.
Sorry for my bad english...I try to explane another time my question.
If i put a tooken marker for example on wall street after first act,and another Player in the second act put a thug over "find i job",i can choose to not take me too the card"find a job"?
You don’t have to take the bonus action you are owed.
Can an illegal good be suit-cased if someone plays a card that forces everyone to discard a card, and the player chooses the illegal good?
Yes, but it would be worth nothing at the end of the game. If they discard a job, you could suitcase that, which might help you win majority in a job set.
