    Thank you for this. Finally, someone who puts the scales as they are and doesn’t just goes off on tangents about it, and actually breaks it down.

      What do you mean :) ? Can you explain it to me 😊? I just start to learn today bass and the way it’s teach is completely different from pianist. Pianist we learn step by step and in order the scale of C to B instead the bass they start from G and many other scales names that I was not aware. So plz why you say finally someone who puts the scales as they and doesn’t just goes off on tangents about it? I want to understand the bassist players and their perspective 🤔

    After 3 years of playing Bass and being told to learn Pentatonic shapes, scales etc. etc. No one ever explained HOW or WHAT the pentatonic IS. Everyone just shows you shapes but don't explain what the meaning behind the scale is. This video was an AWESOME cheat code. If you look at it as a set of numbers, and plug it into the circle of fifths, you can find the Pentatonic of ANY Key. Thank you so much!

    I love this video because it is really simple to understand, but I just have one question, can I play the notes on the scales in different orders? Or should the notes be played in a certain order

    • @Ernestomartinbass
      @Ernestomartinbass  2 роки тому +4

      Hello, thank you.
      Scales are studied from the note they start in order but you can alter the order as long as you know which note you are on.
      Let's say this is a basic orderly study but in music there has to be some disorder otherwise it's very boring.

    So how do I know when to play a harmonic minor scale or a melodic minor scale. If I'm playing over A-7 to a D7 , do I use A dorian or D mixalydian or can I use C Lydian over the A-7 and B phrygian over the D7?

    • @Ernestomartinbass
      @Ernestomartinbass  2 роки тому +2

      Hello at the moment you are using the cadence of D7 to Am, it should imply the harmonic minor or melodic minor mode. Therefore that D7 can use these scales:
      D7 mixolydian b9 b13 or mixolydian b13.
      So Am would be the harmonic minor or melodic minor scale.
      On the other hand everything you say for the D7, in a major context, works. In this case it would be G major (D7 dominant).
      Harmony has many ways, you can trick the listener with its magic.

    I think I've found out theory just isn't for me. I started bass by seeing a Davie504 slap video and got into playing metal and learning songs I liked. Sure, knowing the stuff is cool, but nothing really seems fulfilling like there isn't a point to it. I've had a teacher, but it just seems I can't find a reason to actually learn it. Everyone gives the reason: to learn the notes are to help with other stuff, but there isn't a point of learning that stuff if you are just learning it to learn it for no other reason. I've always seen people just say practice this, practice that, yadda, yadda, and it never works because it isn't interesting and doesn't feel like I'm working towards anything. I guess what I have found from all of these videos are to just practice this stuff to a metronome and that's it. I found jam tracks to be somewhat useful, but those are boring too, like you are just repeating the same thing you know already.
    Not hating on this video at all, if anything this video was more helpful than most. A lot of the bass community is just filled with "practice scales" and nothing else. This video explained intervals & shapes better than what SBL or any other big channel does.
    Just made this comment for discussion

    What I don't understand is...do you just take the "shape" of the major modes in the Ionian scale and apply them to any note on the fretboard ? Or do you have to play only the notes in the ionian scale in all keys ? I am so confused!

    • @Ernestomartinbass
      @Ernestomartinbass  2 роки тому +1

      Both are valid. You can always play any isolated mode on any random note.
      But modes imply a key, if you are playing Dorian A you will be in the key of G major.
      At the beginning of the video we explained that it is an individual study of each scale and they all start from the G note.
      I hope you understand, thanks for commenting

      Because all of these scales are starting on the g on our E string. These are one octave scales and if you learn what the copy and paste method is on bass scales it will make more sense. I’ll find a good video that explains it and give you the link.
