THIS is what I have been looking around for so long! Thank you for your efforts Luke. You've made what I thought was so complex, so much easier to understand. Awesome work and Thanks again.
@@BecomeABassist None of what you're doing makes sense. You're not pointing to anyone's work for context. Even the dullards at Guitar Center are better at your rubbish than you. Why? People pay for their rubbish and walk out saying nothing, same as watching this BS.
You just got me over the hump. Been trying to play for 8 months now. watching every lesson on UA-cam and getting a little frustrated. this just got me into the fun mode. Thank you for this. I mean it Thank you.
This lesson is exactly what I started with in the late 60s. It immediately had me playing Bluesbreakers, Fleetwood Mac, Ten Years After and many more covers in a band. Well done.
This is extremely helpful to me. Although the kind of bass I play is an acoustic, these really boost up my sound when I play. My friend who’s a country guitarist, really likes my blues bass playing. And we’re both considering combining our sound together with a cajon as our percussion. Endless thanks for this lesson, man.
I've been playing the bass for over 30 years and this series is the most practical, sensible and useful set of lessons I've discovered in ANY format! High praise indeed...For the beginner and intermediate player this is the QUICKEST way to become a: well, er...a BASSIST!(as long as you stick with it consistently). Whilst not designed for the rock star, it's still a great refresher and an inspiration for the experienced player. Put it this way-"there's a smorgasbord of epicurean delights" just waiting for the low frequency aficinado to DISCOVER(or re-discover if that is your want)... Greetings from a Washington State, USA; dyed in the wool hair farming purveyor of dinosaur ROCK!
I can’t believe it I have played guitar for a long time and wanted to play bass, but it seemed very complex until I came across this. Now all of a sudden it’s there it all becomes clear. Like another comment “I’ve waited for this for years” the best and easiest practical explanation I’ve come across. Brilliant thank you!
I first found Scott's bass lessons when I started bass but he is obsessed with jazz and furiously fast solo playing. Totally lost me within a few lessons. Luke is much more rounded as a teacher and not stuck in one genre. Easy to understand and no paid membership required to learn bass. Excellent.
Thanks for the kind words Alex - I really appreciate it. I do actually have some premium paid content, although everything on the UA-cam channel and on becomeabassist.com will always be free. Thanks for watching!
I have been playing these for a long time, and even used them in live shows. what I struggled with teaching myself with books but YOU made it so simple. Thank you so much.
Kind of embarrassed to admit, after all these years I never messed around much with the blues, more into classical thrash metal. Always thought of the blues as kind of a one-trick pony. But man, what a pony. It's actually really fun and after all the time spent executing the vicious moves and stamina that metal demands, it's also easier. Next jam when the time is right I'm gonna pull out a few blues lines and see what happens. Really good presentation here, Luke. You opened mine eyes....
Glad to see someone on youtube explaining lessons at a level that everyone can understand. You are an excellent teacher and did an awesome job of explaining all of this. Thank you.
I bought a book of transcriptions of Donald ‘Duck’ Dunn’s playing. The number of variations he puts into Sweet Home Chicago [which follows a 12 bar shuffle pattern] from the Blues Brothers is amazing! You can probably say that for all his playing in the Blues Brothers actually. Well worth a listen.
"Yeah? Yeah?" This is gold for starting bass players. I'm a guitarist of 25yrs, recently picked up a bass to play around with mainly so I can lay down backing tracks for my home guitar recordings. This is a great starting point to embellish upon, thanks.
I have attempted to play the bass for several years and never continue to actually play but once with a small band. I am trying once again and the blues is what I love and I appreciate you for simply sharing and explaining things. My challenge is I have small hands and arthritis pain keeps me from playing too long. My pinky finger can’t even reach the E string with enough strength and I find I lift my fingers away too often. Suggestions? So far- lighter gauge strings, small scale fretboard etc. Right now I have at least made fifteen minutes a day a first goal. As I get my callouses built up I am remembering scales and practicing them.
Hello Luke, I just want to echo Reverend Rodinal's comment. I play on my church's worship team and have been stuck for a long time. Looking forward to making some serious progress. Thank you!
This is literally the perfect video for someone falling in love with blues. It couldnt have been more straight forward, informative, and consistent. Thank you so much!
Outstanding lesson. Great introduction to blues bass playing. I played blues electric bass almost exclusively for over 10 years including hosting blues jams and I used these patterns in various modifications more times than I can imagine. I wish I had this when I was starting. Back when I got my start it was through a lot of listening to records to pick these up.
Bonsoir je suis un bassiste amateur français et je joue en duo avec mon épouse à la guitare, ton cours est très clair et intéressant, j'en ai profité pour réviser mes lignes de basse blues. Merci, je viens de m'abonner à ta chaine.
Ive been playing for 30 years but I always return to keep my foundation rock solid Thanks Luke...more blues bass please,as their are endless variations....cheers
Ey! Finde beides geil.
Luke.... you have provided a good foundation for the blues. It's all useable stuff. Anyone learning to play bass needs to grab what they can from as many sources as possible. This is just one of them. Pay no attention whatsoever to all these idiots and know-it-alls who are criticizing what you are doing.

Great beginner lesson ! The last two exercises witch patten's (notes) are derived from the major scale should be the emphasis from the beginning so the beginner realizes that with standard blues the bass guitar is usually playing a major (scale) while the guitar and other instruments are usually playing in a minor scale and to know the difference!! The major scale and the modes of major are key for a beginning bass player! Just an opinion from a real(old school) bassist.................
Amateur pianist, this was a useful thing to note. Was kind of puzzled how to eg. play a background shuffle over a minor pentatonic since the 5-6 interval is short in the minor scale.
WOW I am into the third section and this just makes sense- you broke this down so well it makes sense musically!! And the real world examples are a great addition.

Blues in general sounds better with a measured tempo on the bass/rhythm and simple, melodic phrases on the leads.
