Awesome content. I've struggled for a while to ubderstand how scales are actually used in a chord progression. I salute you sir for your practical approach and for actually taking the time to show us noobs how to use the damn thing after you show it to us. I will be a subscriber forever.
Knowing the basic scales is the key but only only half the battle. It's all about the person's musical wiring and how they perceive what they feel is needed in a song. I've heard people who graduated musical collage who understood the mechanics of music but had a tin ear when it came to feel and what a song needed to deliver and I've played with people that didn't even know the name of their notes on the neck and refereed to their notes and scales as gears and gear shifting but what they had was a natural ear for note arrangement even though they couldn't identify a scale or even name their individual notes on their fret board. I do agree with you that you can do a hell of a lot even knowing just the basics AND as a musician you are a lot better off knowing the scales. It definitely makes life easier in a rehearsal even if you're in a cover band playing rock, blues and country.
I have the exact opposite problem. I've been a professional vocalist for over 35 years and am learning bass now. It's hard for me to match what I've always been able to do by ear with what's on the page and in theory. My bass teacher is very tolerant, telling me, "Do you know how many people would PAY to be able to hear what you hear?" LOL
I fell victim to the 'Bass Bot' approach to scales and gave up about 30 years ago...but now I'm back!!!! I seem to have a memory of part of the bass line of So What by Miles Davis being based on the Mixolydian scale and being very happy with myself when I realised that. If only the internet had been around back then. Great content BTW and Bass Bot costume is 👌
Definitely John! I tried to rein it in to make it clear what notes I was playing for this beginner video, but I would wiggle around a lot more to try to match Stevie Wonder!

Of all the bass lessons on UA-cam, this one helped me break through what was beginning to feel like a brick wall. I can learn songs like many suggest, but that gets me no where when it comes to understanding what I'm really doing. I needed to locate the root notes all over the neck and then proceed with the shapes from there. With guitar, chords are easy to find, piano is beyond easy in that regard. Everything is laid out. With Bass, whole different ball game. I think the reason many bassist look bored is because they never bothered to fully explore the instrument. Thanks!
Many UA-cam videos say that you need to learn the scales and implement them in your playing, but this one is the best one at explaining how. Great video!
I may have an acoustic guitar and still quite rusty at it, I do like watching videos about basses as well when I become better at playing the guitar. I want both guitar and bass (along with cello and double bass)
OMG bro. I have had my bass for a couple years... never played it. During this "break" I have went from bad to decent in a week, because of your channel! Thank you.
Thats such a simple yet profound advice. Listen to the roots, get the root of each progression down. Add flavor to each note later. Been playing bass for about 4 years, and I always struggled to get good basslines down just because I went straight to the "dont just play the root", and I often found myself playing random crap.
Just using a squier bass to teach bass lesson . It's true what they say it's not the brand but it's the guy playing it that make the difference. Always enjoyed your bass lessons Josh . Thank you Josh.
I have to comment again on what a great bass teacher Josh is. Best on UA-cam imho as far as the way he delivers the information to you which makes it a lot easier.
This probably sounds really stupid but I feel like I really needed this video. I spent a really long time procrastinating learning scales higher up the fretboard and found it really difficult to memorize them or know how to use them. I also didn't like to learn riffs because I thought they were too short and I couldn't do much except play in the background of songs. I'm really grateful for this because not only can I play melodies using scales but I know have a foundation for creating my own bass lines. Thank you for making this video and sorry for the long comment
Always tabbed it and never learnt to play. Never got it.. now I do. Thanks for making it so easy to get going. Now I’m learning and enjoying playing. Huge thanks.
"Fun does not compute." 😂 LOL, that's actually my problem. I'm way too darn patient, and can drill things way too long. No, that doesn't help me improve, that means I wait too long to move on. 😟
Hey dude ;thank you; you just opened my eyes with this video, i almost quit my bass playing because I didn’t know how to apply the scales to the songs in the real world
Thank you so much. Retiring at the end of the year (61 years old), going to to learn how to play bass. Wanting to learn something new and I have always enjoyed listening to the bass in songs. With your lessons I think I am on my way. Stay safe.
Thank you Josh for these lessons. I don't have a bass yet, but I already learned so much and I'm super excited to start playing bass. When I have my gear I'm definitely going to follow your Beginner to Badass course! Also, we need a full song of the binary solo xD

After going through so many teachers, websites, books and videos, I have to say yours are by far the most effective... The way you explain and then demonstrate along with practice suggestions makes it so easy to understand scales and theory. I've been playing for a while with little to no idea about the theory behind it, i wasn't a robot but I only played by ear and didn't understand the theoretical aspect of what I was doing. Thank you so much! I'm going to check out your website and hopefully be able to learn more and become a better bass player. Thank you sososososososo much!

You are the best. Over the last few years, I've started and stopped learning a bunch of different instruments because I always get too bored when it comes to practicing the technical stuff. I think you've just re-ignited my excitement and passion for playing music, which has come at a superb time as my city (in Australia) is heading into another 6 weeks of lockdown. Thanks for all the effort you put into your videos and for being so generous with your knowledge!!!

OMG bro. I have had my bass for a couple years... never played it. During this "break" I have went from bad to decent in a week, because of your channel! Thank you.
Nice! Good time to learn. 😊
Dude, you're the best. It's so easy to learn from Your video's. Thank You!
You're welcome!
I agree! they're so helpful!
Thats such a simple yet profound advice. Listen to the roots, get the root of each progression down. Add flavor to each note later. Been playing bass for about 4 years, and I always struggled to get good basslines down just because I went straight to the "dont just play the root", and I often found myself playing random crap.
This video helped me a lot, I was stuck with this robot style.
Glad it helped!
Just using a squier bass to teach bass lesson . It's true what they say it's not the brand but it's the guy playing it that make the difference. Always enjoyed your bass lessons Josh . Thank you Josh.
You're welcome Ahmad!
That bass is so beautiful
I have to comment again on what a great bass teacher Josh is. Best on UA-cam imho as far as the way he delivers the information to you which makes it a lot easier.
Thank you! ❤️
You're such a good teacher bro
Thanks bruh 😎
@@BassBuzz wow, you answer comments too 🤯
Yep! 🐶
One of the best PRACTICAL bass guitar lessons i have come across youtube after a very long time . Keep it up man
This probably sounds really stupid but I feel like I really needed this video.
Glad this video was helpful! Nothing stupid about your comment, tons of people struggle with figuring out how to actually make music with scales.
Always tabbed it and never learnt to play. Never got it.. now I do. Thanks for making it so easy to get going. Now I’m learning and enjoying playing. Huge thanks.
You're welcome!
Great vid like always mate
Thank you!
Finally a video that i can understand with scales, have looked at loads on UA-cam and found total confusion, subscribed
"Fun does not compute." 😂
LOL, that's actually my problem. I'm way too darn patient, and can drill things way too long. No, that doesn't help me improve, that means I wait too long to move on. 😟
I've been playing bass for 25 years and I just realized I needed this video years ago! Superb work on visually explaining the patterns.
Best bass channel on youtube , thank you so much bro. I learned so much from this video
Thanks!
Hey dude ;thank you; you just opened my eyes with this video, i almost quit my bass playing because I didn’t know how to apply the scales to the songs in the real world
I love the Flight of the Conchords reference at the end. :D
I am turning into a bass god in just 17 short minutes of watching and a few short months of playing. Thank you my good sir!
You're welcome! All hail the Bass God. 😇
I love Your videos, saludos desde México
Gracias Cesar!
Thank you so much. Retiring at the end of the year (61 years old), going to to learn how to play bass. Wanting to learn something new and I have always enjoyed listening to the bass in songs. With your lessons I think I am on my way. Stay safe.
Nice, have fun with it David!
Thank you Josh for these lessons. I don't have a bass yet, but I already learned so much and I'm super excited to start playing bass. When I have my gear I'm definitely going to follow your Beginner to Badass course!
Also, we need a full song of the binary solo xD
You can get a cheap starter bass online for $70-$100 new
Look out for BassBot's EP, coming out in binary text file format only in 2020. 🤖🎸
@@dragenthatch3623 true, but I rather spend a bit more to get an awesome bass that I can keep playing for years on. :D I went to my local guitar store and I really loved the sound, feel and look of the Epiphone Thunderbird Vintage Pro ^-^
Hey @boekie98 The binary solo is from the song called "The Humans Are Dead" by Flight of the Conchords. They're awesome and BassBuzz's reference cracked me up! Enjoy!

This video blew my mind. I went over and tried the shapes on ukulele and they worked too!
You're a gifted instructor! So glad I came across your channel. Can you put up some Joy Division (Peter Hook) techniques (Love Will Tear Us Apart, Blue Monday, Ceremony)? Thank you!
I like Peter Hook but I don't have much in-depth knowledge of his playing... but there are a bunch of Hooky nerds on the BassBuzz forum! forum.bassbuzz.com/search?q=peter%20hook
You are the reason I want to buy and start learning bass,Im guitar player :D
Aww thanks, that means a lot to me! Go for it. :)
Gotta shout out to ya brother. I’ve had a bass for years and never really learned how to play minus a few tabs. After watching countless videos that sounded like Chinese to me I found this one. It makes a little sense now. Thanks a lot. Jamming some blackbird.
Thanks Jim!
Time to learn that bass that i got 10 years ago and never touched.
Do it!
DO IT!
...or give it to me :P
Yeah! Do it
JUST DO IT! MAKE YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE!
Glad I could help Esther!
Thank you very much! Your vids help a lot in this shitty corona times :-)
When I first starting hacking on my bass, before your course, I tried to find good combinations of notes from the major scale to make it sound like music...Great tips Josh
That "friendly bass teacher" got me. I admit it. I laughed.
OMG, that sudden 'BASS SOLO!!!' in 'With of Without You' made me ACTUALLY laugh out loud. Great stuff!
Good, cuz it made Bono shed a single tear. 😪
Love how you make lessons entertaining as well as really informative.
If you like cheesy humour folks, stay right to the end for the binary solo 🤘
30 years of playing guitar and some piano, just starting on bass. You are the best teacher on the internet. Period.
Thank you!
"Every Little Thing She Does is Magic"-- Police, D major.
I have just bought a bass and discovered you. You taught me to play bass with walking fingers. Thanks a lot. You rock man, thanks a lot for taking your time and explain all this to us. I’m grateful! Thank you!
I know major, minor, pentatonic, and all modes. I have no idea how do use them beyond walking bass lines.
It's like I have a told box full of tools but don't know how you fix a car with them
Just go on jam tracks and improvise, its legit the only way you'l learn fast. Follow the drums and fill the spaces with some licks on the go
Thank you for being there (even 4 years early) to answer my question on how to fill a gap in my bass-player knowledge.
Note to self: watch this later (hopefully today) when you can get a bass in your hands.
never thought i'd get rickrolled by a bass video but here we are
I came here because I want to learn how to be a teacher because now I had been hired to teach music and your Chanel is really good, you are funny, clear and really smart, you gave me a bunch of ideas so im subscribed now and ill see all your videos, Gracias desde Mexico amigo !!!!
You almost have a talking style like Mr Beast, IT WORKS WELL!!!
Still waiting for my bass to come. For 17 years I’ve been playing drums and now have to get into something fresh during the quarantine :) This lesson was great and fun. I really appreciate Your work!
Why weren't you around when I was starting to play?! :O
I was playing violin before and had always problems with scales. This is a very educative content, thank you.
Unexpected Rick Roll. That hurts 🤣
this lesson clicked with my brain so well and i really think this could help me get out of the rut i’ve been in for a while
The office insert... nicee
I.... DECLARE..... BANKRUPTCYYYYYYYYY!!!!!
I wish I would have found you sooner. Amazing teacher. Been playing 6 years and I finally got a pedal board and am enjoying the bass lines!
Thank you!
Please, make a "how to slap" video
I didn't know any scales before this video, but now I do know one and I'm feeling better, thank you!
