The scene starts with Zoolander lamenting his life with his friends, who you expect to be supporting characters throughout the film, only for them to explode moments after being introduced and in the dumbest way possible.
I never really thought of it in that regard. But MacGruber did something similar when MacGruber travelled around in a montage to gather his crew of trusted associates, only for them all to blow up in a van immediately.

Omg I just realized the blond guy is the excellent actor from the miniseries Generation Kill. He played a Marine who was absolutely believable as I was a Marine myself. I just read though he had served in Sweden's military. This all boggle my mind though wow, what an actor.

I shook his hand and said “Dude, you ‘killed’ in Zoolander”. I mentioned that while I was playing aboard a cruise ship, the only movie on the crew TV, for four months, was ‘Zoolander’. We never got tired of watching it…
What shocks me is that Derek was just smart enough to know that lighting a cigarette while soaked in gasoline was a bad idea.
