Thank you so much! Every other video i could find used the custom white balances and i could not figure out how to change the kelvin numbers ..everything i did just changed the position on the colour grid . It worked changing it under the C temp/filter setting!
This video was mad helpful! Shoutout to you for this brother. Quick question, do you ever notice that the white balance is off on us ppl with darker skin tones? I have the a7iv and notice my white balance is super orange when setting it using a custom card. Makes me look super orange.
Hi thanks for watching. I haven't run into that issue before. However if it's something that happens regularly. Then maybe you'll want to dial in the white balance manually by choosing the Kelvin and color shift yourself.
I'm not even kidding, my recording setup that I'm building... is just like this! And I even bought the same exact white balance card brand.. WHAAAATTT!!!
Thanks for the vid. Should I set the white balance when shooting in slog? Also I noticed in your recent video you mentioned using auto at a wedding because the clouds were changing - so should you only use the custom white balance when inside/in a controlled lighting environment?
Hi thanks for watching. Yes, definitely if you're in a controlled environment you want to set your white balance. And even in the run and gun situations, you want to set it as much as possible. Only when things are moving really fast will I use auto. So like the instance you mentioned, clouds were changing, and I was moving inside and outside. So I didn't want to miss something because I had to stop to set white balance. But getting as much right in camera makes color grading so much easier. Especially if you're using 8-bit codecs (A7iii, a6400, ZV e 10, etc).
hi, your color grading is really good. i dk what I am doing wrong here. plz is there any way you can help me a color grade? it would be very appreciable.
Hey thanks for the compliment on the look. Color grading definitely takes a while to learn. But once you do it enough you start to find your style. What are you shooting, and what are you using to edit?
@@CreativeTechLab i have sony a7iii and premire pro. Its been year of i am shooting and editting. Never getting the looks or best quality. Is there any way i can can maybe send u a clip and u can tell me what i am doing wrong here
Hi! Does it matter where the camera is relative to the grey card? I assume the grey card should be where the subject is, what about the camera? Or does it not matter as long as the grey card is in the circle region when custom setting? Used the grey card in our last shoot, and footage came out too warm. Thanks for the insight!
Ok, however, what about when I'm using flashes? That custom white balance will not trigger my flashes, and the preset its not accurate because every time I'm using different modifiers. The preset is set for a specific flash without any modifier.
That's a great question. However I don't do flash photography so I'm not an expert. But I'd imagine that your flash has a Kelvin white balance output. So I would set the camera to that white balance. And then if you're shooting in RAW even if there's minor adjustments to be made it should be a easy fix. Video files are not as forgiving. Hope that helps.
The process should be the same once you have the custom buttons set. The custom button is just a shortcut to get to the same menu option. Are you asking how to set white balance to a custom button?
I was looking for this comment. I know exactly what you mean. You're in your memory recall mode for video, and now you want to just use a white balance card. Here's the kicker: it's impossible. Yes, you heard that right. It's impossible to use a white balance card when you're on a memory recalled mode. I'm not joking. Sony is that dumb. You will have to go to the "movie" general mode and set up an entire whole new video custom 1, set your custom white balance using the card, and then save that to be a new custom 1. What an absolutely asinine approach by Sony.
So I can only see the “set” button in custom when im in movie mode. I dont see it if im on one of the memory presets 1 and 2. Thats pretty inconvenient right? Or am i doing something wrong
Yeah I'm not sure why sony does that. You have to be in movie mode/manual in order to set a custom white balance. However in my experience if you're setting a custom white balance you're in a more controlled environment where you have time to do this. So you can set the custom preset and save up to 3 and then swtich between as you need to.
@@CreativeTechLab Thanks man, I actually used the white balance "set" tool last night for a shoot. Switched to movie mode and ran the "set" button to see what the white balance was than just took the info it gave me and did it manually in my memory mode 1 since that's what I usually use for everything. Memory mode 1 I have setup for 24p and memory mode 2 I have set at either 60p or 120p.
I’m not exactly sure what you’re asking. But once you set your white balance you can save it to a custom preset that you can always go back to. Hope that helps
When I was shooting an outdoor scene I was at like F20 on my Sony A7siii and although my white balance was set to custom while shooting the camera kept adjusting while I was recording. Any solutions to this ?
Not sure what that issue is. I’ve never encountered that before. The only thing I can think of is maybe the clouds were or other light were changing. And that would affect the white balance
If I could give a suggestion. As an avid UA-cam watcher, you might want to talk a little faster to not lose your audience attention. I felt it was a little too slow and almost made me want to click out of the video. But thank you for the informative video
Thanks for trying. I gave up watching at 51 seconds because you had not said one relevant word. I'd strongly suggest you revise and cut out the irrelevant stuff like the overly long intro and the music. Not downvoting but not upvoting. Concise is great. Verbose wastes my time. Like you I'm a brown person so don't take this as a white guy dumping on nonwhites.
Finally! A video that explains how to set on the a 7iii! lol thank you so much!

Great video, been looking for a video to explain how to do it Sony for a long time, glad I found this
Glad to hear it! I have another video coming out on white balance in the upcoming weeks. So stay tuned
How do you know which card to use for setting your white balance?
Technically for a digital camera u could use either. But a true grey or true white is the preference
great stuff, thanks
My pleasure!

Hi thanks for watching. You want the grey card to be where the subject is going to be so that the camera can read the lighting from that spot.

Sony A7iii

@@CreativeTechLab It doesn't. My Canon EOS 5 Mark 3, just like every Canon can do custom white balance from a pic. I wish Sony had the same
Check some other UA-cam videos. If it really can’t do what you need then there’s plenty of capable Cannon cameras out there. Switch back to Cannon
Anyone know how to set custom WB but when you're dialed in to your custom dials (e.g. C1)?

Yeah. I find when shooting stills it doesn't matter as much because the raw files can always bring the color back to where you need it.
