Looking for more information on picture profiles? Check out this awesome video:
Gerald Undone Picture Profile & Dynamic Range Guide: ua-cam.com/video/D2iqEDUe1qg/v-deo.html
Thanks for sharing my stuff, you sexy beast. 😜🙏
@Gerald Undone - Thanks for digging into the deep stuff you beautiful giant 😘
Always interesting, no useless blablabla, : to the point, instructive, clear and easily understandable, I love your content.
@@geraldundone you have the best explanation video but I have rewatched it 10 times over and I feel like for my 11th time I will just need to rewatch with a dictionary (or google) on hand ready to search every term you use. Dunna though yours is great for someone with the technical knowledge I have in terms of camera tech so thank you!
What monitor you recommend for Video editing.?? Thanks!!
I think color correction is always necessary. Color grading however is something you do exclusively for yourself and your tech-nerd friends. The client almost never appreciates the difference between standard or graded footage. So I have given up on grading and spend that time on script development instead.
Your teaching skills are just fantastic👌I watched so many videos trying to figure out what PP are, what they do and the difference between them and was never able to understand it fully until I watched this video. Thank you! 🙂
Thanks so much!
Bro God bless you. You have the heart of a teacher and a true ability to simplify complicated information in a way that's easy to digest. You didn't win a Jimmy John's giveaway, but you still earned a sub.
Maaan.. about 947 previous UA-cam videos have lost me to this subject before this one. They all expertly explain what picture profiles ARE and what they look like (which is.... I mean.. why? I can see what they look like.. thx tho..) but none of them bothered to explain the WHY and certainly not the REASONS to use them. Great video! Simple, but it explained more in a few mins, than the previous ones in hours and hours of digging. Subscribed.
Thanks,
Attila
Your format is so good man. Not only are all the shots really crisp, nicely colored, and have super high quality audio- but the way you have a table of contents style approach to your videos, where you can just simply click on the specific portion that you want is just 👌
I really appreciate that Michael! Thanks for letting me know!
I settled with HLG2 BT2020 gamma Details -7 and Stauration -7. Image does not need much of tweaking/grading at all. Saturation = 0 is also good. Camera A7C. If I need to do any color grading, I export result from Davinci Resolve in Main10 4:2:0 HVEC MP4 file and it looks great!
I WATCHED MANY VIDEOS BUT YOU FINALLY SAVE MY LIFE. sometimes it's best to just keep it simple and shoot "standart". But I will keep working on especially for slog and hlg and gain experience on this subject.
Absolutely the best description I’ve watched on this topic, thank you! Cheers
Glad to hear it!!
Not only the best, I'd say the one we needed. Finally I can decide wgen to use the S-log which might be....never!
I agree!
I agree!
thanks man, really great vid - made everything very clear. All the other videos I've watched are along the lines of "Why you should shoot Log". I'm a time-poor hobbyist, so being told I need to spend hours colour-grading every clip didn't feel like the solution for me. Think after watching this I'll save those PPs for when really needed!
I really appreciate the great efforts you're doing, and thank you so much for the good work !
Thanks for watching!
This is awesome - will use HLG-3, love how you demonstrated it looks after production
This was fantastic, just the explanation I needed!
You are very sincere and i appreciate your honesty. I agree, sometimes we just don't have time on post to color grade and use no picture profile on a controlled ambient is the best shot. Thank you.
one of the best videos on log setting. Bravo. Tricky subject.
Would really like to see that window shot with both standard profile and corrcted/graded slog2 profile. That would really show whether the slog is worth it or not.
Great video, love how you explained the why 🙌😃
Good stuff! Too often people say to use a picture profile because that's what everyone else says to do without explaining why and how it differs from the standard profile.
Thanks so much!
Just what I needed to begin understanding this complicated topic! Thank you
Thanks for the kind words!! I’m glad it was helpful!
This is what I was looking for. 👌

Great stuff, thank you, just what i was looking for.
Best explanation about picture profiles that I’ve seen.
Thank you!!
Dunna, Always super useful. Thanks for the video
Thanks so much!
Great video very helpful!
That was so informative and so easy to understand, thank you!!!!
Well done dude!
Dude, thank you. Great job.
Love the analogy - love coffee - nice work brother!
Very nice explanation my brotha!
Great vid, thanks!
dude this was so helpful. I bought a new camera today, tried to be all fancy and shoot in S Log 3.. annnnnd it's all trash and I need to reshoot all of it! Thanks for explaining this so even dumb dumbs like me understand!
So helpful video, thank you so much!!! 🌷🌷🌷
Perfectly explained! Well done! Thank you very much
Thanks a ton!
Cool information! Thanks for sharing this video. God bless you! 👍🏼😊🔥
Excelente Dunna Thanks a lot
Great info. Thank you!
Very well explained Dunna!!
Thank you!
Great explanation! Helps me decide between the A6300 and A6100. A6300 it is :)
Dunna "Does it" all the time! thx man!
Thanks for watching!
Impossible to be more clear than this. The best video about picture profile
Thank you so much!!
This was an incredible way of teaching the subject. I know very little of this, but your visuals and explanation helped tremendously. I highly recommend you do a more in depth "under the hood" video.
Thanks so much! I’ll definitely consider it!
Brilliant teacher you are man, thanks!
Glad you think so! Thanks a ton!
Big fan bro always i learn many thing from your videos thanks 🙏
Excellent! The BEST (edit) PP explanation I've seen so far. and I mean it.
Thank you!!
Thank you Dunna for this video! I think the HLG3 is the best option.
Nice!
Dunna! Good one.
you have no idea how much you helped me. Thank you!!
You are so welcome!
Best information so far 😉
Im so thankful about the part when you started comparing it with coffee haha it’s my passion and that got me to finally understand all the PP topic! Thanks bud!🙏🏼
I'm glad I could help!
Thanks! But can you go over your detailed settings for each picture profile on the A7 III?
Really helpful video! Thank you so much brother 🙏🙏🙏
Cheers!
Amazing video mate!
Thanks dude!
I've been shooting a bunch of corporate indoor shoots on a flat background in LOG just to practice color grading, and because I got the idea that shooting in the standard profile was just unacceptable for a professional to do, like shooting stills with the camera on Auto. But now that I understand the profiles and do know how to grade, I think I'm gonna stick with the standard profile most of the time. Great video, very informative. Thanks!
I’ve been shooting standard more often lately too! It’s quite handy when you need it!
Hi there. When you say standard, do you mean no Picture Profile? I have just switched to Sony and there are so many Profiles! :)
Great Video!
U MADE IT SO EASY TO UNDERSTAND!
Happy to help!
Thanks for the great video! Now I understand the profiles!! :-)
Great to hear! Thanks for watching?
Very good explained! Thanks a lot🎥🎛🎚🎤
Thanks for watching!
I learn a lot from you Dunna. thanks
Great to hear!!
Well done.
I like to just choose one at random and surprise myself in post :) (this is especially fun for multi-shot videos!)
Hahahaha I love this.
Thank you
I was waiting for this
The wait is OVER!
This will help a lot of people!
Thanks so much!
Love it!
Thanks!
This was very helpful.
That’s great to hear!!
Great video Dunna! I sent a suggestion in your suggestion box! Keep up the good work!
Thanks so much! This was actually the first video inspired by comments in the suggestion box so I’m excited to do more!
@@dunnadidit Looking forward to it!
Thanks! Really needed this video!!
Glad it was helpful!
@@dunnadidit Maybe follow up with your actual camera settings for each profile?
Ie black, saturation etc at this level.
And keep up the good work
All the stock settings. The only thing I change is putting detail to -7
@@dunnadidit Final question. Whats the reason for the -7?
Well 'Detail' in general
Great explanation - I thought I was taking care of things by bracketing at multiple exposures
That coffee analogy though
Haha glad you like that.
okay but now can you explain coffee profiles please
Haha you might need to turn to James Hoffman for that
For me it’s a no brainer to use log, I hate blowing out highlights and it gives it more of a film look after grading.
Boom!
Hi, can I use picture profile settings for video vlogs?! I don’t record in manual since I do vlogs. So I will like to know if I can still use picture profile? Thank you
Yeah you can, you just need to know how you need to expose different picture profiles and set your auto modes accordingly.
1) whats the best setting (ok i know subjective) for post processing?
2) whats the best setting (ok i know subjective) for NON post processing (all contrasty and colory)?
From Neaples, where the coffee is a cult...i loved your analogy...:)...Looking for my best run&gun setting on new sony a 7s3...:) Ciao!
With the 7s3 I’ve been shooting almost all SLOG3 and loving it.
Best thumbnail ever
damn that coffee shots made me hungry for breakfast😂. Nice informative Video man
I love color grading. I have a signature look so I always shoot raw or log video.
Nice
thanks
Oh wow i didnt know there were profiles out there that were better then the internal log profiles. I just assumed the internal log was the all around better option. Thanks for the info time ro go test profiles now 😂
Haha all the profiles I used are internal profiles. But it’s not so much about better or worse... it’s about better or worse FOR THE SITUATION. But I do suggest going and testing them all out to see what you like best!
super helpful video
Thanks for watching!
Great video (as usual). I’ve just been planning to get more familiar with this topic. Also! Have you gotten your hands on the Sony 16-55 f2.8? Curious about your thoughts on it!
Thank you!! I haven’t gotten it yet (except at camera camp for a day). It’s a fantastic lens but I’ve been shooting less and less with my apsc cameras lately so it doesn’t make sense for me to pick one up. In fact I just sold my a6400 and 18-105 to lighten my apsc kit a bit. Got that a7siii coming soon!
The #1 reason I don't use a "log" profile is that I suck at color correcting.
Well there you go! The important thing is that you use what works best for you!
Hey man, nice video and thank you. Currently playing around with the Sony picture profiles and as you said there are a bunch of other things under the hood! I'm using Cine4 and Pro mode but notice there are a ton of other settings, too. Do you tend to leave everything else as is or are there other things you do to obtain a more 'flat' image while filming. Thanks bud
I pretty much leave most things as is. I went through a phase where I played with everything but I’ve dialed that back a lot
@@dunnadidit Thanks for the reply that's awesome to know. I guess we all play around too much in the beginning! Currently filming on a Sony a7ii using Sigma f.14 16mm lense. The camera films maximum 1080p and since the lense is crop sensor once the image is full size it's probably less than 1080. Struggling with slight grainy footage but have done all I can do, low ISO, good lighting etc. I wonder if the 'grain' is really just the relatively low video pixel quality?
Yeah that’s a tough one, sounds like you’re doing all the right stuff. Unfortunately, grain is just part of the package sometimes.
what should i use for car videography?
Jumping the gun perhaps, but looking forward to thoughts on profiles on the A7S III with the new color science.
Good idea! I’ll probably shoot a lot of SLOG3 with the 10bit
Im stealing the coffee analogy tyvm.
Lol 😂
Caffeine junkie FTW!!!! That's me too!!! Awesome video bro!!!!!!
Hahaha 😂 I figured some people would be able to connect with that.
@@dunnadidit Aeropress or pour over with some fresh ground beans is my shit!!! Hahaha
Thank you so much for this info! Do you have a recommended profile for doing a recap video for a concert? I mostly go to edm shows with crazy stage light production.
amaaaaaaaaaaazing
Nice thumbnail.
Edit:
Nice thumbnail too!
Peter McKinnon will love your coffee analogy
Haha I’m glad I got the approval on both thumbnails lol
@@dunnadidit just to be clear. Second one is ever so slightly better than the first one
I actually struggle with both Cine and SLOG profiles. For me HLG2 was most easiest and that I use for my UA-cam stuff.
Thats awesome! I'm glad you played around with it and found what worked best for you!
Very simple and informative! I tried to look through the comments to see if there was an answer to my question but, I have an a6400...I want to use the HLG3 pp...is there anything I need to change(detail, blacks ,etc.) in that profile or just shoot straight HLG3?
You can just leave it as is!
For slog 2 of 3, does the picture profile (like pp1-9) affect the look too, or does it not change when selecting gamma?
Hey Dunna! I was wondering, which picture profile do you use for dark areas (BLACK)? I recently did a video with my camera (FX3) in SLOG3 and noticed keeping it at the base ISO DOES NOT WORK. I am assuming it has to do with the SLOG profile. I typically want a darker look to my videos and am struggling to find the best profile/settings to make this happen. If you have any tips please let me know, thanks!
I basically shoot SLOG3 all the time.
Great video 🔥
Can i ask ?
How to you prevent from not having enough info to stretch in log fotage ?
Thanks for the answer.
Unfortunately its not really up to you. It all depends on the camera and the files. If you have a camera with 10 bit video, its very helpful. But if you're stuck with 8 bit, you need to be careful. Even SLog2 can be tough unless you expose it just right.
Justin, this is such a helpful video. I've been struggling recently because I shoot in Cine 2 and then color grade it. I add the Premiere Pro fix for Mac at the end (it helps in fixing the desaturated colors and tints that Premiere causes when you render using a Mac). But for my last video, the end result that was uploaded to UA-cam looked way too punchier than I wanted it to be. I have no idea why it's doing that. Have you had any issues with Premiere pro exports and how did you fix them? I was thinking if I should start shooting in HLG3 or SLOG 2 rather than my Cine2 profile.
When I was using premiere more I always used their gamma fix lut on export and that seemed to help. Not sure why it wouldn’t be working for you 🤷🏻♂️
That said, I do notice that UA-cam always looks different than QuickTime, which looks different than premiere. So it’s got to be that some different kind of processing is happening at each stage
@@dunnadidit I don't think that it's not working, it's definitely working but rather than being desaturated, it's doing the opposite and getting too contrasty.
@@dunnadidit yeah, you are right. This might be it. I just need to figure out the best mix in color grading so it doesn't look too punchy after export.
Hey Dunna, big fan here, is it possible you do a HLG3 color grading tutorial? I'm torn between HLG3 or SLOG2 in my a6400
Notification squad! Now I'm gonna watch the video...
WOOOOOO!
Which would you recommend for night time on a A7iii
what picture profile to use for RAW photos ?
