did you know you could use sonys lens cap/body cap for custom white balancing. it actually is the specific grey required for white balancing and that was a deliberate design decision by sony. try it next time ;-)
That's a great tip. When I used to shoot Canon there was an easy button to lock the auto WB but I didn't see anything like that on the FX3. If you have time to share your method setup, that'd be dope. Thank you.
Interesting... always used white for a white balance but now you have convinced me to use a grey card when it comes to the skin tones - definitely looks better! Also one more thing: for the auto you can set the priority in settings to the "white" and then tweak colors (mine are set for B+0.5 and M+0.5).
While I do love setting a Custom white balance, sometimes (as you mentioned) for long clips in areas where I do not control the lighting (mostly run and gun) I prefer using Auto W/B. Imagine events where a couple is sitting under a neutral light and then you pan towards an audience member who is sitting under a completely different light. I found that for long takes the previous Sony auto W/B worked decent (definitely usable) and if I want to do a highlights clip where there is no panning, just a cut between the 2, I can match them much easier because the W/B changed in camera. I had very few shots where I had to keyframe my W/B in post to match it changing (and it wasn't difficult to do, only tiny increments). Now if I were to set a W/B for just the couple, then in post the footage of the audience member would require massive changes in W/B which would definitely show and look bad. And with these being said, I would like to ask about those "extra" auto W/B options that we got with the a7S III that we didn't have in previous models. I believe there are 2 or 3 "shockless" W/B settings and would like to ask you if you have played around with them? what has changed from the previous generation?
Veeery Helpful thanks! For the longest time I was convinced White Balance was done with the white card; people kept sugesting the gray card but I wouldn't know why until now.
This topic drives me crazy. :D I use an A7R III and there is a very strange behaviour. If I shoot RAW images, I can use WB temperatures only, colours are accurate. As soon as I capture either JPG or MP4 (so having the camera interpret the image on its own), the camera starts to shift the tint towards magenta. Coming to Sony, I always heard people complain about green tint but somehow my former A7 II managed this a lot better then 3rd generation bodies (both the regular 7 and 7R series Mk III).
Very helpful! I see you're using the DataColor Gray card, which is $50 and has those white-to-black squares. Is there a benefit of using that instead of using a solid color 18% gray card? I see those for much cheaper, including with the 24 colors on the other side. I don't inherently mind paying a little more to get a much better result, but no one wants to spend more than they need to haha. Sorry if it's a newbie question, I'm very new to all this lol. Thank you again for the video, very much appreciate it.
Thanks for the tutorial! One thing I've noticed. I have a couple Memory Recall Settings saved for the two configurations I will use the most, and strangely It doesn't allow for a custom WB. So I have to leave the Memory Recall setting back to Video, do the custom white balance, take note of the Temperature, go back to the Memory Recall and set the Temp manually there in K... Seem a bit silly, am I missing something here?
office paper contains bleaching components that can give a hue depending on the spectrum of the light source. that is why it is not recommended to use it when adjusting the white balance
I actually have the DT 770’s and they’re lovely (especially for tracking instruments) but I prefer the Sennheiser HD 650 for editing as they’re open back, the sound quality is incredible and being open back I find you can edit for far longer without fatigue 👍🏻
@@HarvVideoAudioStuff Ah nice! Open back headphones will always be best for quality, but it’s hard to get away with if you have a lot of noises in the background or have to work at night or something. The 770’s are definitely more comfortable than the M50’s though!

Great tutorial. But I'm using the A7S. Menus are completely different. When I select a custom WB and choose right, I get the colour matrix thing with A-B and G-M settings. Says 5600k but apart from adjusting the colour grid I don't see any way of making an adjustment to the kelvin value. So it's always on 5600K! Normally I shoot in video mode with manual exposure. Is there something I'm missing?

Thank you for the video. Does the Sony A7SIII have a custom color balance as well? In other words, you hold up a color card and do the same thing you did with the gray card. I just started filmmaking and I know nothing... I can prove it. Thanks
Not as such, but you can hold up a color card and then use certain plugins to calibrate the colours in editing. I’m sure color finale lets you do this but you’d need to check which color card to get as it only works with certain brands 👍🏻
Do I setup my lights on my subject that I’m shooting? then move the lights then take a picture or do I take a picture of the grey card then set everything up after , thanks for the tip means a lot
Hey! You said you were in the youtube comments as much as possible so here goes nothing, can you also customize the kelvin like this? I've tried on my a7siii and I can only choose in the color spectrum but not put my kelvin up or down

Hi Harv, this was very helpful! I shoot outdoor hiking videos where it's mostly landscapes (mountains, forest, etc.) but subjects are also in the scene from time to time. I don't have a lot of time so I've been using auto WB. Would you recommend that I WB in post using.a white shirt, etc. in my editing software (Premiere)? Any advantages / disadvantages to white balancing in post vs. in camera? I'm currently shooting on a Sony A7C
Hi Harv, white ballancing in post is better than not white ballancing at all but it's one thing to ballance off a white or grey evenly exposed card vs picking a white point on your shirt which could be too bright or too dark for a correct white ballance. I white ballance before and even after use the picker on the color chart to slightly correct the wb that the camera has set. There is always a slight difference.
Quick question can I use white paper for white balance and grey card for correct exposure? Or do people use grey card for white balance and correct exposure? I'm confused 🤔

Hi Steve, I’d definitely stick with a fixed WB rather than using auto. Should mean much less tweaking when you edit. As for a temperature, I’d try 5500k first and adjust from there 👍🏻

Thank you for this, very handy. I have a problem when im in my saved settings mode on my Fx3, cant "set" wb in custom, option is available but says memory recall. Anyone know how to get around this?
So the solution is to go to Manual Mode > WB > Custom X > Set and then go in to Memory Recall X WB > Custom X > Dial in your kelvin. Not the way i wanted to do it but seems like the only solution.
For it works only with the white card. With the gray somehow it doesn't work I get an error (a7 III) . Have you noticed difference between a cheap white card and one from x rite color checker?
I just came across this problem on my recent sony camera. I'm honestly dumbstruck by how stupid Sony has been with locking out that function, they might as well have also locked out aperture & shutter adjustments while they were at it
I can tell you used a grey card, your videos have a green/blue tint to it,so I would NOT recommend using a grey card, use a white card,it gives you a less awful colors
There’s actually no tint, what you’re seeing is that almost everything around me is naturally blue/green. My skin tones are accurate (bearing in mind I’m a pasty Brit!), I get that colour is subjective too so you’re probably one of many that doesn’t enjoy the colour in my videos and that’s fine. But awful…well that’s just not a fact is it 😂
Well I'm telling you your videos do have a green/blue and I use to use a grey card and there's a color shift twords cyan color on the white balance graph on the camera,so your saying camera graph is wrong and unacrate🤦♂️ And skin tone may look decent but everything else isn't, and that's why I stopped using a grey card because of the color shift😂
But everything else in the background is blue/green, the curtains, the cushions, the way the room is decorated. I’m not going to change these colours in post because they’re meant to be that way, for me skin tone accuracy trumps all else so I’m always going to prioritise that
It’s ridiculous that Sony doesn’t allow you to do custom white balance in the custom settings ! Or a variable shutter speed almost $4000 camera can’t do those
It’s called custom white balance quick tips, suggesting that it’s more than just a ‘how to set a custom white balance’ video (of which I have also made exactly that video ua-cam.com/video/kff2O8doRG4/v-deo.htmlsi=5zRhAXN7kU-uosgd). Does anyone else get the funky green screen after customising white balance with a grey card?
Yes I do sometimes, usually just trying again sorts it 👍🏻
This happens when the image is overexposed, at least that's how I experienced it
White paper gives you really better white balance
Why the heck can't we use this while in memory recall 😅
First! Hello James! :)
Hi Chris!
It's half good to see you too lol
Thanks you it helped me a lot❤️❤️❤️❤️BIG LIKE LOVE AND SUBSCRIBE
Or a variable shutter speed almost $4000 camera can’t do those
It can do a custom white balance
Dude why is this video so long, just show everyone how to do it
It’s called custom white balance quick tips, suggesting that it’s more than just a ‘how to set a custom white balance’ video (of which I have also made exactly that video ua-cam.com/video/kff2O8doRG4/v-deo.htmlsi=5zRhAXN7kU-uosgd). Honestly you could also just use the timestamps, it’s not difficult man 😂
The best way to get white balance with Sony: don’t shoot with Sony unless you’re using an a7siii.
Thank you for this video all the videos. What about using an ND filter? I’ve been told to greycard set WB with the ND filter on.
Definitely a good idea!
Very Nice BROO, What picture profile die you use🤔
