    Only problem with tablet: nits. Active Samsung are, depending models, from 450 to max 650 nits. Under 800 nits you don't see anything with light sun. Under 1000 nits you don't see anything with normal sun. Under 1200-1300 nits you don't see anything in bright or direct sun. If you ride only at night or in rain, it's ok otherwise it's a pure waste of money. Find a good second hand phone ip67, 2 years ago, 6.5 inches, you'll have 1300 nits, a good processor, and easy to find phone holder. In usage you can make a hotspot between your regular phone in pocket and the one mounted on bike, no need of second sim. Just add an heavy duty case... My 2 cents

    Hi Johannes, mate, I have to say your video was excellent. I have pretty much done the same set-up for my brand new Triumph Tiger 1200 Rally Pro. I have the same tablet and Brodit holder. I do have a different mount to my bike, I have also the Quad Lock cables attached to the tablet.. AI wold like to say an excellent video, and set up. I also like to say because of your content, was exactly what I was looking for. Thanks once again from Canberra, Australia.

    Nice stuff Johannes and a real eye-opener for a ‘seat of the pants’ rider like me who is used to just reading the trail, going as fast as possible and either making it through the next turn…or crashing! I am going to have to change my mindset significantly if I am to embrace screens as part of my ADV world. On the road I like audio cues for navigation but I doubt that’s ever going to work in the dirt!

    • @JohannesDalen
      @JohannesDalen  Рік тому +1

      Thanks!
      Having an overview over the next few turns is just a bonus, one should definitely practice reading the trail and surface too. What this reminds me of is in rally car racing where you have a designated guy reading the next turns and corners for you.

  • @andrew390
    @andrew390 Рік тому +1

    Many thanks for this excellent video / review of the Samsung tablet & software. To be blunt, Garmin are just not going to have anymore of my hard earned money. As others have said, you buy a Garmin device and get locked into their world! I am trialling the software on my Nokia at present and find it really useful to monitor all the data coming from the ECU via an OBD wifi reader under the seat.

    That's a great setup Johannes. Thanks for sharing it. I have been using a Lenovo M7 tablet running OsmAnd. Its a good size (7 inch) and cheap so that if it got damaged, it wouldn't worry me. The Samsung Active 3 looks like a great device but here in Australia its $600 AUD new and its a bigger 8 inch screen and quite heavy. The only comparable 7 inch tablet to the Active 3 that i can find is the Tripltek. Also great hardware but its $1,000+ AUD. You would think that with the popularity of drones that these tablets would come down in price.

The Carpe is awesome, but just too much money. I bought the Active 3 just like yours and am impressed by the built quality. Already loving it. Nice video! I have the same tablet on my bike for navigation. The only difference is that I ride a BMW K1600GTL and I'm not offroading (duh!). I was sick and tired of the Garmin, which is still a century backwards in that I can't upload a GPX through my phone or tablet to it, in fact forcing me to carry a laptop with me on holiday or pre-plan all the rides I want to do. Now I can use the tablet to do route planning, store the route on Google Drive or whatever and use it on the road. I made a mobile hotspot on my smartphone and use that internet connection. Works perfectly!
    The tip for that DM2 menu/dashboard app is cool, I'm going to try that out.

      Thanks for sharing, I too think a designated GPS unit like a Garmin is becoming so outdated that switching to a tablet is much better. Ride safe Mike!

    I use a garmin Navigator 6 bike satnav which unlike tablets, is deigned to be fully waterproof and take shocks plus spare batteries are available from the factory for them if ever needed. Can't see myself using anything else. Used you can pick them up for under £300 and if you have a bmw you always have the option of the bmw cradle set up for charging and it additionally reads and displays all the bike's critical data like engine temperature, tyre pressures and just about everything you need to flick through bike dash screen menus for but all on one easy to read display. I'd be concerned about reliability with a tab but would also carry paper maps as a backup.

    Other Android tablets to consider are:
    Oukitel RT3
    Pros: Affordable, Android 12.
    Cons: Screen brightness is only 400 nits, no rear strap mount, 5150mAh battery.
    Hugerock T71 (or R71).
    Pros: Well made, 10000mAh battery, screen is 1000 nits brightness, tablet can be mounted via the included strap brackets.
    Cons: More expensive than the Oukitel RT3, screen is only 7 inches.
    If only the Hugerock offered a 8" model that's as cheap as the Oukitel, that would be good. I'm still undecided which one to get, but the brighter screen in daylight may be the way to go.

On the mount bar running a Rade Garage AMP pattern billet clamp which is connected to GJ mount via a home made ABS plastic plate (VESA pattern) to get the offset (correct centering & height) of the tablet. To fit neatly I am running the GJ mount upside down (with the blue slider bar / key lock on the lower left) - this allows the tablet to be in optimum location and still be able to unlock and clip it out of mount.
    Like you running Quadlock 90 degree USB waterproof connector cable - works great. Also have Carpe Iter adventure controller (the original version) for Bluebooth zoom, pan and operation of screen from handlebar. I need to upgrade my USB charge source to QC3.0 fast charger in a format that I can hide inside headlight assembly. If anybody is interested send me a note and I can send some pictures.
    Also run OsmAnd as main application (tailored for Offroad ADV), with Gaia and ExploreOz (Australian) for other references.
    This has been rock solid, water proof and easy to operate system - really happy !

      @@Vytasltu I tried Quadlock adhesive mount on back of tablet (strong adhesive) - it had potential - nice clean minimal solution. However I found on day 1 of a rally I attended it popped at the join of the quadlock socket (on the adhesive mount) and the Quadlock male / plug which was connected to my bike. I think when bike was on a angle / leaning and hitting bumps at force with the tablet weight it rotated off the 0 degree lock key towards 45 degrees and popped off (3 times in the first day). I have heard of one other who is happy and has not have this happen

    I want to add, that you should remember about battery degradation (it is always in charging mode), it will be happen sooner or later. And if you looking for used device - there is huge possibility, that it is not so waterproof as a brand new one (because of drops/repairs, etc.)

      @RustyVanDoor 8 місяців тому +1

      On the TAB3 you can remove the battery and run on power from the bike, you will need a constant power feed with a switch to isolate though.

    Nice set up Johannes. I’m impressed that you fitted that for quite a low price. I tend to crash a bit so the tablet looks a bit big for me and could get damaged in a tip over? Have you had any crashes while using it. Did it survive ok? Thanks

    • @JohannesDalen
      @JohannesDalen  Рік тому +1

      Thanks - Yeah it was around 300€ total which is quite cheap for what you get!
      I didn’t crash or have any tip over on this TET trip using this, but it is actually quite protected by the screen from the tower. If you don’t have a tower on your bike I can imagine the tab being a bit too big. There are smaller tablets that does the exact same thing for more dual sport oriented riders. This tablet is extra robust, being waterproof, dust proof and impact resistant.
      If I crash with it mounted I’ll remember to update you 😁 cheers

    Exactly what I wanted to know so many questions addressed here. My main intention is to have a thermal camera on the front of my bike since I struck a deer on my Yamaha, and just hit one with my car a few weeks ago, and probably will add a rear view camera as well. So I figured a tablet was the best option and why would I do that and not have GPS? I own the thermal camera already and have been looking at tablets in earnest this past week. Thanks from USA...

I'm going to build your setup and found all your points quite logic (especially the charging solution) What Charger did you get, anything waterproof also? Any ideas/advise here! Thanks for the very nice video!!

    Greetings, I suspect it doesn't get as warm around your home as mine in central US. MyTab A8 is not ruggedized but I have it in a waterproof sleeve and it is held by a robust spring-loaded holder. Have you had any temperature issues with it sitting on the tank being subjected to ambient heat, sunlight, etc? My Zumo was designed to shrug off temp extremes, just curious, thanks! I was thinking possibly a perimeter sunlight deflector of some kind. My riding will be on-pavement long distances.

    Hi do you have any recommendation for the phone navigation device you were talking about in this video? I face the same issue that you mentioned, it is indeed extremely hard to control the phone through touch screen while riding.

  • @johnmitchell9705
    @johnmitchell9705 11 місяців тому +2

    The problem I see is the tablet only has about 400 nits of screen brightness which is low for sunlight viewing in my opinion. My phone has 500 and it is hard to see sometimes, the Garmin Zumo XT has 800 which is always viewable. Now one needs to think about cost when considering these options.

    Thanks Johannes, good to see a cheaper alternative to the Carpe Iter. I wonder what your final cost will be once controller, charging and mounting options are included? Also, does the drive mode dashboard cost much? Be interesting to see long term reliability, sturdiness and waterproofness between your set up and Robert's. And Garmin, if you're watching any of this, you're getting seriously left behind.

    • @JohannesDalen

      In total I’d still be paying less than a nee Carpe Iter for a used Active tab, charging, holder and controller.

      Yes there is, but one needs to connect a few different ‘readers’ to the bike. I don’t know all the details, but it’s the same as adding an OBD reader that get’s all the information from the ECU, and shows it in an app. The same way you can get the dashboard app that I showed in this video to show all the information.

    - In Canada, the "Samsung Active Tab 3" is 824,79 CA$, and the "Garmin Montana 700i" is 939.99CA$.To go for a budget setup I recommend instead "Lenovo Tab M8 (4th Gen)(2023)" is only 140CA$. Specs: 8inch, MediaTek A22 (Quad core; A53 @ 2.0GHz), 2GBRAM, 5100 mAh.
    - The Carpe-iter tablet (CI Pad v4 B) is powered by a "Mediatek Helio P60" CPU (8 cores) and not a "Samsung Exynos 9810" CPU (8 cores).

      the Samsung Tab Active 3 should be much cheaper than that. Especially used. bought mine for about 150€, and if you want to spend even less, the Tab Active 2 sometimes is available used for 20-60€ if a batch of them is thrown on the marked by some agency or company.

Update : I have a Samsung Tab my self now and I can not recomend it because it does not work with regular handshoe on and it is overheating in the sun like a regular Android phone. Brightness is also not the best in the direkt sunlight. 👎

    Hi, great video, congrats.
    This and a few more, made me decide to finally buy one of these tablets to nstall on my bike, but in my case a Cruiser / Touring.
    One thing worries me though: have you ever used it, touching the screen around, in the rain, with a wet screen?
    If so, does it work properly as it's suposed to?
    I've been a GPS kinda guy, using the Garmin Zumo and it works in all weather conditions... hence my question.
    Again, my thanks and congratilations for your video.

      Thank you Sem!
      I’ve used the tablet in rain, but I can’t remember how it worked. If it didn’t work, I’m sure I’d remember as that would have been a big negative. However, I’m using the tab with buttons on the bar, and freeze the tab from reacting to touch.
      This tab is made for outdoor rugged use, primarily jobs like working at the dock for instance, so I can’t imagine Samsung didn’t think about it being used in rain. I’m speculating here, but that’s what I think. Hope this was helpful and sorry I couldn’t give you a better answer just yet.

    No truer word spoken! I switched from brand name GPS systems to an Android phone on my bike. Got tired to be locked in by the GPS lot. Never looked back - even use Google Maps offline and it works 100% - phone blue tooth to my headset, so I can get calls, listen to radio, music etc....
