Peru and Machu Picchu can definetly be done on a budget. Peru has very affordable accommodations and food. The sacred valley is beautiful and there are lots of things to see and do. We loved Ollantaytambo! We flew into Lima and bussed to Nasca and from there to Cusco. The buses are easy to navigate, clean, and affordable. If you get to Florida flights are cheap out of Orlando or Miami. Out of all our travels Peru is one of my faves.
Love following you guys for budget advice and love that we are a similar demographic so much more relatable than young youtubers.

I agree. I stayed at a very affordable place in Ollantaytambo directly across from beautiful, free, ruins. Peru can be done cheaply and it’s absolutely beautiful.

For a Tanzanian safari you could fly into Kilimanjaro Airport and opt to stay in low-cost lodging in Arusha and do day trips to Tarangiri National Park and Ngorongoro Crater, both are spectacular for wildlife. My wife and I have used both Duma and Leopard tour companies and they do great day trips.

I’m from the US and felt the same about India…. until I went. So I think you should reconsider India! Even if you don’t go to the Taj Mahal. It’s such a unique and special part of the world.
It’s inexpensive even at luxury hotels and only a 4 hour flight from Thailand or Dubai. To stay for a month I recommend Goa on the Arabian Sea and maybe one 2-3 day side trip to the Golden Triangle sites and cities.

  • @christineflygirl
    @christineflygirl 5 місяців тому +1

Interesting list. Here is some feedback.
    1. The Taj Mahal is jaw-dropping beautiful, I wasn't expecting that, I thought it was probably overrated, it's not, it is like a piece of jewelry in the desert. Definitely worth it.
    2. Bora-Bora, my husband and I renamed it Bora-Boring. If you don't stay in those $500/night huts on the water, there is only one public beach, and frankly, there are better beaches in cheaper places. The island has nothing worth coming for, no hiking trails, no interesting "downtown" area or anything to visit, food is outrageously expensive. You would get bored there for a month! I think Moorea is much more beautiful, and easily accessible from Papeete (ferry). However I am not ruling out FP entirely, because I really loved the feeling of being in the middle of the Pacific, far from everything (and everyone!) and the local people are really friendly. I would do Rangiroa, Taha'a, Raiatea or Huahine, but on a cruise, so a couple days in different islands; however, this is not a budget trip!
    3. Kyoto. Would definitely love to go there, but going there during cherry blossom season is a) very expensive and b) crowded, so I am not sure I would enjoy it.
    4. Banff. I have lived in Canada for 30 years and still haven't been there. I would love to go but again, you have to pay $500 a night to stay there, and tons of tourists in the summer. I wish I had gone during covid, rates were probably cheaper and no tourists apart from us Canadians!

We did an Amazon River Cruise with GADVENTURES which was what started us on considering Machu Pichu, and im so happy we did, not just for Machu Pichu but for everything and everyone around it. Infact, when I'm done my cruising career I will be going back. I won't be going back to visit the mountain of Machu Pichu, but I will be going back for the city/towns near by.
So we stayed in Aquas Calientes in order to access Machu Pichu in short time and with great Ease. Sadly because we thought the little place wouldn't have much for us we only stayed the one night, big mistake, it's an amazing place (not for the entire month though). You mentioned Cusco, that was our transition to Aquas Caliente/Machu Pichu, we stayed a couple days there, but sadly that was not enough either. Then there is Olantaytambo ... very sad we only got a glimpse of this place. The rail system in that region is much like Italy (not as many trains and tracks, but gets you everywhere in a very short period of time)
Sooooo, may I suggest you stay in Cusco as your home base while venturing out on day trips to Olantaytambo, Aquas Caliente/Machu Pichu ... partake in some of the other stuff like the rainbow mountain, sand boarding, all the ancient temple ruins in the various places in that region, etc.
The culture and way of life is so incredibly different, far more different then iv seen in any other place iv traveled. The way Vietnam is so separate and different is the way this part of Peru is so different.

If u plan a GBR trip some day I suggest Cairns as your departure point. My sister is a marine biologist there & I’ve been to the area several times from the states. It’s a good spot to locate for long travel as lots of reef excursions from there, but also can explore tons of other day & overnight trips from there too: Daintree rainforest, inland outback, caves, crocs, beaches etc. Cairns is a good sized town I’d imagine u could def find house sitting there. Lots of good (& bad) reef outfitters, when u go I can get a short list of recs if u need from her.

Interesting list! Just wanted to chime in about Machu Picchu, Peru. You can absolutely spend a month in Lima and then fly to Cusco and spend a month there. There is so so so much to do and see besides Machu Picchu. Peru is very budget friendly, food is delicious and nature is amazing! Also, you’ll love Lima because it’s very beautiful (specifically Miraflores and Barranco neighborhoods) and it has one the best waterfront parks we have seen! Peru is definitely worth spending a few months!

Machu Picchu pairs well with Easter Island...a perfect month there may be an Amazon river cruise, Machu Picchu (try and plan at least 2 days to hopefully beat the weather at least one day - miserable when it rains) and then Easter Island. Great discussion - no right or wrong answers here. Depends on personal taste, travelling experience and stage of life.
Few quick comments: Peru is a hidden gem. Lots of amazing/unique places to see, apart from macchu picchu, for such a small country. Argentina / Patagonia is fantastic! For safari, I would pick East Africa (masai mara in Kenya or sarangeti in Tanzania) over Kruger for a multitude of reasons. As for India- magical place with variety of food, culture, landscape, history that is unmatched. But you have to be ready and seasoned traveller or know someone local to get the best of India. You will hate India or love it - no in between. Full transferncy i grew up there...but speaking from an American perspective. My now wife (who didnt know much about India) and I traveled to India from the US as friends, and became a couple due to the magic of India :). Keep the travel discussions coming. Cheers.

For me (been there twice), fascinating won out. Still, there may be challenges to planning and executing that trip yourselves the first time.

Love following your vlogs. As an Australian may I recommend a vlog from Eat Walk Learn on doing the Great Barrier Reef on a budget. Honestly I don’t think you could do it cheaper and they didn’t have the crowds we endured on the large boat we mistakenly took. Also they have a fabulous one on the Sydney coastal walk which can be down over several days which is free and you will see lots of places Sydney people enjoy and not just Bondi etc. If you can home sit Australia does not have to be $$$

The Spit to Manly walk is one of the best walks in the world. You can use trains to do sections of The Great North Walk too - loops and back to the train. Walking in Sydney around the harbour and coast is superb. Winter (May to October) has great weather normally - 20 degrees and clear skies (but it has been very wet recently).

For barrier reef or similar, consider Port Douglas as it’s a gorgeous easy to get around area with call on demand minibus service to cover peninsula. Long 4 mile flat beach to walk each day with headland and fantastic views. Some free activities there too. Snorkeling is superb off Cape Tribulation with smaller groups and excellent guides. Don’t be afraid of sharks either - seriously, it’s salt water crocodiles that you need to be aware of off the beach and box jellyfish. You cannot swim off the beach in certain seasons. Some fully self contained apartments with pools can be found for very reasonable prices. A shuttle bus picks you up at Cairns airport and delivers you in less than 90 minutes. (We live in the SW of WA and visit during our winter -May to August is a good time).

Been to Iguazu (Ig-wah-SU) Falls - be warned! Check for when local kids are out of school (we were there in July 2019) - the place is PACKED. It's a large complex of trails, there's a bird sanctuary nearby, which was lovely. We saw it from both sides (Brazil and Argentina) - not to be missed. But you will need some ground transportation, and the taxi was fine. We did it all on a budget, but not someplace to stay for an extended time. We trekked around Brazil (Rio, Sao Paulo, and Brasilia) for 3 weeks. The local flights are affordable, and WOW flying into Sao Paulo is eye-popping! Thanks for a fun video!

Two additional thoughts which might be useful from time to time. First, if you're already half way around the world, go the extra 300km to see that expensive place now because it's cheaper than coming back in 2 years when you realize your regret at missing out! Two, for expensive destinations consider repeating a 3-day pattern of skimping for 2 nights (tent or hostel, grocery) then 1 night in a hotel; this has been the sweet spot for this solo traveler, where I get to experience pricier places without too much discomfort. YMMV. Happy travels!

Interesting to hear your thoughts. I actually have machu pichu in my plans, one of the first things I'm hoping to do after we retire (next year??), and before I'm too old to walk it... From what I read about Peru, Lima seems to me like a great city to stay in for a month. maybe we'll do a Spanish course there. I also wanted to comment about your plans to go to Kyoto for the cherry blossom. We went there in 2019, didn't really want to go then because I assumed it would be crowded but had to go during my kids' spring break. I wouldn't have gone there at that time, definitely too crowded, even though I loved Kyoto, I would have preferred to go between the 2 peaks of cherry blossom and the golden week, maybe think about it. WA has marvelous cherry blossoms, so it wasn't worth it for me. 🙂🙂

Years ago my favorite place was Wengen Switzerland in the Alps but it’s an expensive country. August had gorgeous weather.
I am on a transatlantic cruise now and loved Azores. Beautiful sunny day. Only a 4 hour flight from NY and not in Schengen zone even though it’s Portuguese. 2 hour flight from Lisbon.
I’ve seen the Great Wall twice. Interesting but very touristy.
I got altitude sickness at 7000 feet on the rim of the Grand Canyon and had to take a 70 mile ambulance ride to Flagstaff the closest hospital. I should have slept low in Sedona, gone to the rim during the day and then back down to Sedona. I rafted through it when I was 36. A rugged beautiful trip. Good for young people with good agility and excellent health!

We would love to travel through Switzerland and experience the Alps and see Wengen. It is expensive so we will have to wait.
We also did the transatlantic cruise but only got a few hours in a very rainy day in the Azores so didn't get the experience that we had hoped for. Thank you for sharing your story with us, Pamela and welcome to the community!! ❤️

Not sure what you’re budget is but it would be easy to spend months in Peru: Lima, Cusco, Nazsca lines region, Lake Titicaca etc. Then go to Bolivia because that is a country you don’t know should make your list (if you like mountains).
Also, everyone should give India a chance because it is awesome. If you can handle Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia then you can handle India.

Another really good video. I think you are giving short shrift to Amalfi Coast, which has one of the most incredible drives Sorrento to Positano. Southern South America looks like an area of interest. You have already added things to my bucket list in your travels. I have a bucket list with experiences/events as well as locations to visit. I also split out "couples' locations like Hawaii or Greece which I wouldn't do as a solo traveller. You two have a unique lens of the month-long stay which in time I want to adopt. We recently did a trip to Ecuador and Peru. We loved it. We did a land based trip to the Galapagos and the best resource we found when planning was a TripAdvisor post, "Galapagos Islands - Detailed Guide for Land-based Travelers". Though the prices may be slightly outdated, the information was very good. We were surprised by how much we loved Peru! We visited Cusco, Arequipa, and Lima. Machu Picchu was incredible! You can also do Peru Hop which can take you all through southern Peru. We decided to fly between cities and found this fit our style of travel a bit better. One of my favorite blogs when planning South American adventures has been Along Dusty Roads. Happy Travels! I love your channel and have found the information incredibly helpful! Thanks!! :)

Another awesome video. I've been to many of these places and they definitely should be on the list. I would add Bali (and Indonesia in general - very affordable and like southeast Asia, but unique), Georgia (very affordable, unique culture and food and a year visa for Americans), Nepal (especially if you like hiking), and Egypt/Morocco (VERY affordable, but can be challenging - I lived in Egypt for 2 years and it's a special place). I completely understand your reluctance for India. It's intense. After a month, my wife said "never again" but I really liked it. I get why the Tah Mahal is a must see, but the cities in Rajasthan are so much more interesting. Can't wait to see some videos from Cambodia. If you love Vietnam and Thailand, you'll love Cambodia too! If you like San Francisco, you'll like Cape Town. They are basically the same city. I actually think one of the most affordable ways (at least it used to be) to visit Australia might be a cruise from Australia to and around New Zealand via the barrier reef. Spend as much time in Japan as possible. It's an expensive country in general, but also very easy to visit on a budget as well. There's just so much to do and see there. It's one of my favorite countries.

More unsolicited advice🙂. We loved the around the horn cruise. Choose one that includes the Falklands if you can - easy accessible penguin viewing.
We flew from Buenos Aires to Iguaza Falls but there must be a cheaper way.
Also echo what others have said re Peru. You wouldn’t want to spend a month in one place but Lima(Miraflores), Cuzco, Ollaytantambo and Machu Picchu together make an unforgettable and quite affordable month.
Also our travels this winter included Japan from March 8 for four weeks. Tokyo and south. It was unseasonably cool and we still saw lots of cherry blossoms in many places. We also did two THS one week pet sits - they do exist here. And for what it’s worth we liked Nara even better than Kyoto.
Hope you do a safari soon. It’s tops on our bucket list but we haven’t figured out how yet. Will be watching.

Consider the Fall foliage season which lasts longer and is really beautiful too. Kamakura, Kanazawa, Takayama, Naka Sendo, are all great, well preserved towns too.

Big fan of your budget travel videos. You have provided some well advised travel hacks and tips that can be applied for all. I understand your past travels of Italy were mixed and at times underwhelming, but to compare Tropea and the Cinque Terre to not wanting to go to the Amalfi Coast is a miss. As all of Italy has become, the timing of when to visit is the key, like many other very popular sites. The Amalfi Coast and Santorini are two of the most unique and beautiful destinations a traveler can experience.
Hope you’ll find your way back to Italy one day and give this awesome country with such varied landscapes and sites to visit another try. We’ll be going for our 10th time this Fall and still only scratching the surface of this diverse country(history, culture, food, people, landscapes).

Great list, been to 4 of the sites. Highly recommend the Galapagos which you can save a lot of money by doing a land-based trip from one of the two main islands with day trips. As for Machu Picchu, go straight to Cusco, don't waste time in Lima. Easy to spend a month in this area if you like culture and history. And since you mentioned an Amazon trip, you could do what I did and leave from Cusco and take a tour through Manu National Park and then a boat trip down the Madre de Dios river where there are fabulous lodges and it's nearly the same as being in the Amazon basin itself (the river is a tributary to the Amazon). Also highly recommend Kruger; I'm going there in November, it's a huge park with fewer crowds and all the same wildlife as more famous countries to the north. And South Africa could easily keep you entertained for a month especially around Cape Town; one of the most beautiful cities in the world!

Hi B&C re "the google list"...reconsider Peru. We did it in 2010. It could tick off several boxes for you both; You can do an Amazon lodge out of Iquitos. It was hot and sweaty (I love that stuff) but you see birds, cats, bats, and other animals outside of insects. We actually fished for and ate Pirahanna. Also, outside of Cusco and Machupichu; there is a road that does a ring around the area. We hired a driver and got to see alot more of Incan culture and less touristed sites. And for coastal water sight, we spent several days on the northern coast in Mancora. It is a big surf destination. Plus there were areas we didn't get to that I would have liked to see like Lake Titticaca. We did Lima but only for 36 hrs; could have stayed a little longer. It was a great adventure. The only drawback of getting around the country is by flying. We became regulars at a particular restaurant at the Lima airport. The trip (2-1/2 weeks for us but could have been longer) was worth it!

Hay guys, I think you should move Machu Picchu to the right category, it can easily be a budget locaton, even though Machu Picchu can be a costly single location. I would recommend staying a month in the Sacred Valley, you can easily get around to many locations by public transportation, and there is a lot more to see than just Machu Picchu. There are many amazing hikes you can do in the area as well, Huycho Cusco, Tipon, Pisac, and the hike down into the valley from Chinchero is supposed to be very nice as well.

As for places that I have liked.
Brazil (Bahia region). I went around 20 years ago and it was great. Family members and friends have also gone and some quite regularly and recently. A longtime friend from here moved there permanently almost a decade ago. I just saw the friend some weeks ago due to being here on a visit to family and friends.
Ghana. I went to Ghana, solo, back in Dec 2004. Fabulous. I went two years back to back so it was either 2023 and 2004 or 2004 and 2005. But, Dec 2004 was the same year of the Tsunami that hit Thailand and co-workers and my boss were freaked out thinking that I was in Thailand where I usually am that time of the year. When I got back to work, there were a lot of hugs that I was safe.
Morocco (Marrakesh)- I went back in the early 1980s. Great. Other people I know have been more recently and also loved it.
Tunisia (Gammarth and Sousse and a few other areas) Loved it. I was there the year before being in Morocco.
South Australia- suburbs of Adelaide area and surroundings. I enjoyed it. I was also in Melbourne where I stopped a couple days before flying home.
New Zealand-Took two trips back to back in two different years in the mid-late 1990s. Was staying on a sheep farm on South Island with 3,000 sheep. I was also on the North Island. Have been to N.Z. twice. My favorite spot in N.Z. was Hina Hina Cove where two Kiwi friends and I sat for 5 hours trying to spot yellow-eyed penguins and document them. Fabulous. I love penguins and had wanted to see the rare yellow-eyed ones for many years. Also albatrosses in Dunedin area. It's easy to trek around N.Z. as they don't have all of the creepy critters that are found in a lot of other places in the world where I go.
Buenos Aires;: Loved it. Would love to return and also do more of Argentina.
As for the Google list, my list is quite different. But, as for China, I've only been to Hong Kong (Jan/Feb 2017). Once was enough. As for Japan, love it. Was there in summers of 2017/2018/2019 as I like hot weather. I would like to also go during cherry blossom season, but the prices are too inflated. Kyoto and that region and expanded areas are my favorite and I also loved being out in Wazuka to get away from the hustle bustle for half a day. And the food was really good at a small local restaurant. One can get to Wazuka by train and bus from Kyoto although that's not how I got there.
I hope you do get to Scandinavia. Quite interesting. I've been going regularly for four and a half decades, including once to Finland and just going to Europe in general for that long. However, the weather is very temperamental in Scandinavia to say the least. Heavy clothing takes up space when packing. Plus, it is expensive, but doable. There are a lot of young people traveling that region and with little money.
As for India, haven't been and don't have the energy to take it on. I know folks who have taken it on though. But, I do solo travel and am female, so it's a different story from my male friends who have done it solo and also a few others who have done it by tours.
As for Venice, I've been. Went two days in a row, but from Treviso as the train is only around a 35-minute trip. Love the city of Treviso and the region, but don't need to return to Venice. I also think that one either loves it or really doesn't love it. But, I loved Asolo which is known as The Pearl of the region of Treviso. I traveled around the Treviso region on 2-3 trips there.
As for Bora Bora, in a close friend's two cruises, Tahiti was included both times. She also travels solo and mentioned that she felt that it was more for couples than a solo traveler. She's glad she went, but was a bit bored.
Amalfi Coast is beautiful. I went during the summer in the late 1970s, I think it was. But, I don't need to return. And as for the Amazon rain forest, the friend who moved to Brazil has been, but she's fine with the creepy critters. It's not going to happen for me.I'm with Carrie on that one. I deal with enough reptiles/creepy critters in S.E. Asia and don't need to meet up with their extended reptile family members in other parts of the world. Reptiles have been my phobia since a small child and with good reason. LOL!

We spent 3 weeks in Japan. Our plan was to visit a number of cities, but ended staying almost all the time in Kyoto. We loved it so much! Would do the exact same trip again! Prices are cheap(er) right now! There's Zipair with low prices. Haven't used them, they fly from the west coast only...
China is cheap! And there's so so much to see...
Venice: been there a couple times, will still be traveling there in the future. Can be expensive though staying in the city. Mestre is much cheaper.
Still on our bucket list: Northern Lights anywhere (Iceland, two birds one stone); Patagonia (Southern lights there? Don't know...); still tons of places in Europe; Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Redwoods forests...; etc...
Haven't paid much attention to India, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, or anywhere Africa... Some parts of Morocco are amazing. The food too!
Have heard from friends about Iran and Uzbekistan. Hope governments someday just let people be (our and theirs...)
One other thing that we've checked but is not a specific place, is a 'total' eclipse. None of that partial eclipse crap. Totality is it. Had the chance to see our third one in Montreal last month. And starting to plan for the next one (Spain? Iceland? not sure yet where...)

what is amazing to one may be uninspiring to someone else :) I too think Machu Pichu is amazing, in fact.. Peru is an incredible country, I spent a month there many years ago and would love to go back. India is also a very intriguing place and one of my favorites. But to each their own which is what makes travel a uniquely personal experience!

Great video. I enjoyed how you broke down why or why not a place made sense or not to visit. 📺💪🤔
I think India is an incredible place with its rich culture and history. I would love to go visit this one super working dog trainer for 1-3 months. I just have too many issues with food and health safety.😮😢
Side note: As your channel grows and your knowledge of affiliate programs and ambassador programs grow, are there new opportunities that might allow you to slow travel more in more expensive regions/countries? 🤔
Say a month+ in the UK, Denmark, or Paris etc on a $4-5k budget 🤔

    • @RaduRadonys

If you have enough money, you can always get European (or Western) cuisine prepared in high quality conditions in India. But it would kinda defeat the purpose of visiting, especially since those kitchens are in 5 star hotels.

Thank you for the insights, as always!! As our channel grows, it allows us to explore destinations that we otherwise wouldn't have been able to. However, we are committed to the lifestyle and this channel for the long term, so we will always be on a budget. We will plan yearly, more expensive activities (Safari, Paris, Scandinavia, Japan) balanced out with less costly destinations to stay on budget and still see the world. Great question!!

We travel a lot. Within Thailand and mostly Vietnam. Went to Phu Quoc in January, Danang coming jn August, then back to Hanoi. Bali after that.
These places. (Mostly) sound great, but too far away and expensive.
But plenty to see here in SE Asia. Willl try Malaysia again. Went once, wasnt impressed. Maybe Laos.

Another budget travel channel just did Australia for 5 months by using repositioning cruises to get there and return. They house sat most of the places. they did a hop flight to New Zealand to reset their visas. We are currently in New Zealand for a month and heading to Australia for June. Egypt was not on the list and it should be.

    Banff???? Mehhhh
It's in my back yard... In actually going to be driving through it in two days on my way to Southern BC.
I have never understood the attraction. I grew up in BC Kootenays surrounded by mtns. Hiked them many times. Personally....a mntn is a mntn. It's actually more interesting for me to fly over BC from Calgary to Vancouver than it is to drive through. Buuuuut as I'm driving through from Calgary to Nelson in a couple days Its usually a toss up which way I go... The twisty windy Hwys on my younger days is always more fun than actually arriving... It's all about the journey and which ferry I take. Balfour, or Shelter Bay or just the boring Skyway and hwy 22 & 3.
I usually go one way and come back a different way
Personally I think Malaga Spain, old Town should be on the list.... So many side trips avail to Gibraltar, Madrid (great architecture), Ronda(get a room overnight in the old monetary on the cliff) comminito del ray, ferry to Morocco or Cueta. Spent 18 days didn't want to come home. An easy 3 months in the Costa del Sol. The cheap wine the ice cold cheap beer, the olives EVERYWHERE not to mention the tapas.

You always appreciate what you're not used to more than what you are. We drove up the mountains while in Romanis because everyone told us how beautiful it was. We are from the North Cascades! The Cliffs of Mohr in Ireland are amazing as well but again, it would be more impressive if we weren't already from an impressive part of the world. We love places like Malaga, and other beach towns because they're not what we are used to. To many, Banff would be incredible!! It is interesting how an amazing beach town in Spain can be much more affordable than a place like Banff. 🤔
